Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   Dr. Adrian Hyzler, the Chief Medical Officer of Healix International, joins RIMScast once again to provide an update on COVID-19 developments as of winter 2021.   COVID-19 remains a critical focus at RIMScast. Between the new surges, strains, and the rollout of vaccines, there is so much that risk professionals need to know to keep their businesses operational in addition to keeping their employees safe and informed.   In this update, Dr. Hyzler speaks about the UK lockdown due to the 27% rise in COVID-19 cases, the difficulties countries are facing in vaccine distribution, the new COVID-19 variants, and what businesses should avoid and embrace in the midst of the pandemic.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS’s Global Membership. [:27] About today’s episode. [:37] Current RIMS features, offerings, news, and events. [1:57] More about today’s episode with Dr. Adrian Hyzler. [2:19] Justin welcomes Dr. Hyzler back to RIMScast! [2:39] Currently, the UK is in the middle of a lockdown due to a major incident (a 27% rise in COVID-19 cases between December 30th and January 6th.) What has this experience been for Dr. Hyzler during this? [4:09] How confident is Dr. Hyzler that we will be able to combat the new variant of COVID-19? [5:54] The UK has introduced mandatory coronavirus testing for all international arrivals and extended a southern Africa travel ban to curb a new Covid-19 variant. Does Dr. Hyzler see this as being an effective ban? [11:01] Does Dr. Hyzler feel that people got a little too confident over the spring and summer of 2020 as the numbers plateaued for a little bit? And ultimately, that’s why we saw this resurgence in numbers (and still continue to see it now in January of 2021?) [12:37] Dr. Hyzler discusses some of the difficulties countries are facing in vaccine distribution. [14:51] Dr. Hyzler knows many people that have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine. He shares what their experience was like and how the vaccine works. [17:48] Why is it possible that someone is still able to get infected with COVID-19 after receiving the vaccination? [19:32] How employers and risk professionals can use the publicly available COVID-19 information to protect their employees and prevent onsite spread. [23:15] Does Dr. Hyzler feel that world leaders, celebrities, and politicians filming themselves getting the vaccine is an effective way to promote it? And does he think that business leaders may take a cue from that? [25:13] Strategically, is there anything that Dr. Hyzler feels that businesses should avoid or embrace in the midst of the pandemic? [30:50] Justin thanks Dr. Adrian Hyzler for joining RIMScast once again and shares some of the links to check out in this episode’s show notes!   Mentioned in this Episode: RIMS Risk Forum 2020 India — Register for On-Demand Content! Being in tuned with your body is crucial to longevity happiness and fulfillment. But how do we gain that happiness? How do gain that happiness and sustain it for the rest of your life? You accomplish this by focusing on how you FEEL over how you LOOK! Even if looking a certain way will make you “feel” better, in most cases it won’t only because of the mindset you have before you took your first step towards an improvement. There should be a hand full of questions you should write down and answer yourself on paper: 1) why do I want this?, 2) How do I feel right now, and how will I feel when I accomplish my goal, and 3) What specifically is it that I want to accomplish and will it bring value to my life & others?    The amazing guest speaker in today’s episode is a returning guest speaker, Nikki Montesanti, and has some extreme value to bring in this episode. She is a professional on dialing in how you feel over how you look. Even if it comes down to being “happy” with your body, you still need to dive into how you feel over how you look. Nicole recently had a boob job, due to dropping to 6%BF in the passed and then going into a bad relationship with food and herself, and in this very moment her body isn’t doing what she wants it todo. This is something millions of people can relate to, and in this episode you will hear just how vulnerable Nicole is willing to get just to share her experiences to inspire you to focus on you, for you, and only you, no matter what anyone else says!   Head over to my IG (@Matthew_Fitness_Trainer) and comment on the guest speaker post with some value you grabbed, a favorite emoji, or something you enjoy from the podcast. Paul Cummings had a stroke three years ago and lost his speech, the ability to understand others, the ability to read and write and difficulty moving his muscles. Doctors told him he would never be able to write or speak again. Paul advocated getting a coach for whatever we are trying to accomplish. Kristina, his first speaking coach, was his speech therapist She gave him a book of 40,000 words, to which he devoted 14 hours a day tracing and copying. He didn't know what the letters were, how they sounded, or what the words meant. Now, he knows 30,000 of those words and teaches others  with similar conditions to read and speak again. Prior to his stroke, Paul was a world renowned speaker on the topic of positive mindset. Although his speech was shut down by the stroke and he was unable to share his wisdom with others, he followed his own advice throughout his recovery. It only took him 6 weeks to learn how to write again. When a person’s brain has known how to do something in the past, it doesn't take as long to recover that ability again. Paul practices the technique of speaking words in different kinds of voices so that his brain can remember the phrase in different ways. Paul emphasizes that negativity has no place in the recovery process. When doctors and loved ones preach that one is doomed, tune them out and speak positive affirmations into your life. With belief that one can get better and the willingness to work incredibly hard to get there, recovery is possible. As we all know, sharing can help others. She highlights how she chose to be in the moments that are phenomenal, chose to highlight the gratitude moments and chose to live with an open, grateful heart. She shares how we can all invite miracles to our lives by focusing on the constant practice of gratitude, and coming to peace with things that didn’t go our way. A key strategy she shares is how she decided to undertake starting and ending the day with a smile, despite the challenges of that day, the hurt, pain or disappointment, and focus on gratitude, which allowed her to see miracles throughout the year. In her introduction to Vaan Nguyen’s collection, Adriana X. Jacobs writes, “Nguyen’s poetry may circulate in the Anglophone literary market as part of an increasingly visible Vietnamese literary diaspora… And yet, introducing Nguyen’s poetry to the Anglophone reader needs to account for the particularities of the Vietnamese experience in Israel without letting it entirely overshadow her work.” Between 1977 and 1979, approximately 360 Vietnamese refugees entered Israel, and of that number, about half left for the United States or Europe. Those who stayed were able to apply for Israeli citizenship, take on jobs, start families, and continue with their lives.  Nguyen’s parents were among these refugees. She was born in Ashkelon, Israel in 1982, one of five daughters. The family moved around and eventually settled in Jaffa Dalet, a working-class—and largely immigrant and Arab—neighborhood that is part of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality, “not the pastoral tourist part, but the section that is far from the sea,” Nguyen explains. Have you seen the Crazy House on HaYarkon Street in Tel Aviv? It’s a highrise that looks like pink cement, with some metallic puffed cream lobbed at the front of it? Or at least that’s how it seems to Marcela. It used to look that way to the poet Lali Tsipi Michaeli, as well. Michaeli says “fear is what I felt as a child every time I drove with my parents in a car on Hayarkon Street. As the car was about to reach the “crazy house” (I called it the “scary”), I hid on the back seat floor and closed my eyes tightly. The house troubled the girl I was. Over the years it has become a Tel Aviv landscape and I have always had a certain aversion to it, a kind of traumatic childhood memory.” Text The Mad House by Lali Tsipi Michaeli, translated by Michael Simkin. The progression of analytics contains four main methods. Descriptive (what happened); Diagnostic (why did it happen); Predictive (what will happen); and Prescriptive (what actions can I take based on what will happen). With each step in the progression, the analysis becomes more difficult, but the payoff is with greater value. We talked about an example in transportation where I walked you thru some of the questions and types of analysis you may encounter in each of the four methods. In order to know what method to use, you have to know what data you have available and what you are capable of providing. Today, on the third episode of Season 3 on the Bois & Bar Talk podcast, the Drink of the Week is All Together by Stony Creek Brewery out of Branford, CT. All Together is an American style IPA with a 6.5% ABV. It smells of grapefruit and oranges with a golden amber color. After tasting, we noticed the bitter grape flavor and weren't the biggest fans of this one. However, we give All Together credit because it actually had a special purpose and campaign designed to support both business and hospitality workers struggling during the pandemic. All Together Campaign The All Together drink is actually a cost effective recipe created by Other Half Brewing made to be a global collaboration among breweries. The All Together campaign invites all breweries to use the recipe, name, and artwork to raise awareness for local hospitality workers in their respective communities. The campaign also requests that a portion of proceeds go directly to hospitality workers. The low cost recipe is designed to help breweries weather the storm while business slowly returns to normal. Over 800+ breweries participated in the campaign. Our Rating Overall Rob gave this low cost Stony Creek Version a 5.7 out of 10. Kev gave a rating of 4.2. While we weren't crazy about the grapefruit taste, we're still happy to share the special story and glad we gave it a shot. Kev finally watched The Last Dance documentary series made in 2020 revolving around Michael Jordan's final season with the Bulls. The documentary focuses on the championship run during the unforgettable 97-98 season. We talked about the intense mentality of Jordan that ignited the rest of the entire franchise. We also point out that Jordan's competitors enjoy feeding into his legacy. They enjoy sharing stories of getting beat by the greatest basketball player of all time. Other topics of episode 3 include discussing the lack of personality on professional networking platform LinkedIn and talking about Introverts/Extraverts. Looking for More Bois & Bar Talk? He believes in a Perpetual Business where there is Value, Continuity and Legacy. Look for Bob’s Previous Episode (https://www.wardden.com/#/home). Steve LaFleur, owner of Prescott Import Car Service in Prescott, AZ. Steve has made an agreement with two internal candidates to pass on ownership. Dave Mendez, co-buyer of Prescott Import Car Service and a 10-year employee. Key Talking Points: 85% of all small businesses do not survive the departure of the current owner. They will sell as liquidation or sold to an inside or outside buyer. Only two choices You plan on selling your business on the day you open We are going to leave this planet and we are going to stop working someday. You need to have assets to sustain yourself when you retire. You must plan for it Steve has been in business for 35 yearsHe has included his people in business decisions for a long time That helped prepare them to understand the business better Open your mind to listen to your peers on succession planning. Ask and learn Consider having serious discussions with internal candidates to find their tolerance for becoming a business owner. With every interview, you must put succession or ownership on the table to find out the potential employee’s leaning. Give people the possibility of more than just a weekly paycheck. Steve took a class from Bob in July 2017 on building a ‘Perpetual Business’. The place to start:The realization that you are leavingTragedy may strike A call to action in the event of a tragedyPasswords, Signing Checks You can do all of this to prepare for succession. Discover if there is a great chance to sell to a cash buyer outside the company You must plan Consider allowing an opportunity to the people who have helped make your business great. They must have passion and commitment. You can solve for all other needs, but passion, commitment, and dedication are required. Give your internal team all the tools, mentoring, coaching, learning Decide to get a signed, sealed agreement by a certain date. Your internal candidate can be nervous about becoming an owner and that can be humbling and challenging. In this case, the wives were on board with the transaction. One in four succession plans include two candidates according to Bob’s practice The transaction must feel right or it will fail. The relationship must be strong and there needs to be a strong bond. Internal candidates: Think of them as partners and if you can imagine that, they may be consideredYou will look at your employees differently. Who has the aptitude and passion for being an owner? Essential conversation for every staff member“I am always planning for the continuity of my business. What is most important to your career. Where do you see your future, ultimately?” Owners earn the people they have, and their success. Outside candidates may not necessarily treat your customer the same as you than an internal candidate has understood. Start planning now Find a new employee for a needed position. No matter the position. Put this statement in your ad.‘The possibility of ownership.’ You may attract a candidate who has this goal. Break the ice with your people. Ask. You must discuss with wife, family, and what does life look like after a sale. It takes time to build a transaction. The people are the business. They make money. They are

Bob Warde You are going to sell through liquidation, successor, or outside party. 85% of businesses never get sold. Bob Ward IF your business can run without you, you have a great chance to sell. You’ve developed a great team which is attractive to a buyerYour people make the business   You plan to sell your business the day you open it.    Always be looking for a successorAsk your people what their plans are Ask in employment interviews what their future plans are Buyers buy the cash flow of the business and assetsYou have to prove the cash flow Financial statements must be part of the equations Finding an internal candidate is an extremely viable planYour internal candidate has the skills or you can provide them/ It can makes them a credible candidate. Ask them: What is most important to their career? If they ask that they would want to own a business someday that is a key market for future development for the opportunity for succession Provide a timeline to earn ownership Bring a business coach into the equation to teach business skills David asked his buyer to provide the right pay and benefits for his people. He made sure his people were taken care of Actionable:You need serious financial statements, accurate Consider who is going to buy the operation Where is your buyer going to come from An outside buyer or big box or franchise is rare Your buyer may already work for you. Bob feels that ¾ of businesses sell to an internal candidateIt is a natural transition for someone who has worked for you for years to ease you out of the business via a sale If the candidate has the passion it will work The buyer can earn credits toward equity ownership and for down payment   It is the growth and development of people that is the highest calling of leadership. Death has a crazy way of putting a lot of things into perspective. With the recent passing on my dog and best friend Levi, I've been thinking a lot about what audio and podcasting REALLY means to me. It got me thinking of the Alexander Supertramp quote "Happiness is only real when shared". We as podcasters tend to hole ourselves in a spare bedroom, walk in closet, or any location that is completely separated from the sounds and sights of the rest of the world. It can get lonely, and that loneliness and isolation can really get in the way of progress.   This week I'm revising the concept of community, this time VERY determined to provide a safe place for listeners of this podcast, viewers of my videos, and I to freely express ideas, theories, tips, and techniques that will not only result in a better sounding podcast, but a more fulfilling experience along the way.     JOIN THE FUN ON PATREON!       Links: 10% off all merch, all proceeds benefiting the humane society Previous Episode on Community Community Vlog on YouTube Levi the Pitbull Clean Cut Audio on Twitter     My Signal Chain   Hardware: Audio Interface: Apogee Ensemble Microphone: Shure SM7b Headphones: Audio-Technia ATH-M50x Earbuds: Klipsch R6i II Studio Monitors: Yamaha HS7 Mic Stand: Rode PS1A Boom Arm   Software: IzoTope RX6 Mouth De-Click IzoTope RX6 Voice De-Noise FabFilter ProQ3 Waves Vocal Rider Waves CLA-2A oeksound Soothe2 Waves LinMB Waves WLM Meter Waves Durrough Meter Waves Abbey Road Studio3     -Save 10% off the plugins above with this affiliate link from Waves!-   *most of these links are affiliate links       Midroll Song: Road Trip by Joakim Karud Closing Song: Harmony by Joakim Karud   http://www.joakimkarud.com       For more info, or to ask any questions, check out my website and reach out to hello@cleancutaudio.com
