It's Friday, February 7th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Vietnamese pastor harassed and arrested by Communists Pastor Nguyen Manh Hung, age 71, was arrested on January 16th for a Facebook post that criticized Vietnam's communist government, reports International Christian Concern. Authorities charged Nguyen with promoting “anti-state propaganda,” a charge that carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. Police reportedly cut off the power to the pastor's home, entered the home, and arrested the pastor. Officers also confiscated documents, laptops, and phones. Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Authorities have harassed Pastor Nguyen several times in the last 15 years. But he has continued to publicly challenge corruption and human rights abuses from the communist government, including appearing in 2015 before a U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee investigating violations of religious freedoms in Vietnam. According to Open Doors, Vietnam is the 44th worst country worldwide for the persecution of Christians. Trump: “America will always be one nation under God!” President Donald Trump spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast yesterday which was held in the Washington Hilton, reports The Christian Post. TRUMP: “From the earliest days of our republic, faith in God has always been the ultimate source of the strength that beats in the hearts of our nation. America is and will always be one nation under God.” President Trump referred to the Christian faith of John Winthrop, a Puritan lawyer who helped found the Massachusetts colony, and Roger Williams, a Puritan minister who founded Providence Plantations which became Rhode Island. TRUMP: “Just steps away from here, in the Hall of Columns, is the statue of John Winthrop, who famously proclaimed that America would stand as a city upon a hill, a light to all nations. “In that same hall, we also find the statue of the great Roger Williams, who founded the state of Rhode Island, named its capital city, Providence, and built the First Baptist Church in America. It's Williams that we have to thank for making religious liberty part of the bedrock of American life, and today, we must protect the fundamental freedom with absolute devotion.” Trump forms task force to stop anti-Christian bias in government President Trump indicated he would form a task force to stop anti-Christian bias in the federal government. TRUMP: “Today, I'm signing an executive order to make our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, the head of a task force, brand new, to eradicate anti-Christian bias. The mission of this task force will be to immediately halt all forms of anti-Christian targeting and discrimination within the federal government, including at the DOJ, which was absolutely terrible, the IRS, the FBI and other agencies. “In addition, the task force will work to fully prosecute anti-Christian violence and vandalism in our society and to move Heaven and Earth to defend the rights of Christians and religious believers nationwide.” That task force will be a welcome respite after four years of demonstrable anti-Christian bias at Biden's Department of Justice and the FBI. District Judge has delayed Trump deadline for federal workers to take buyout Yesterday, a federal judge has delayed a midnight deadline issued by the Trump administration for federal workers to make a buyout choice as more than 60,000 staffers have already opted to take the offer, reports NewsNationNow.com. Millions of U.S. government employees had been facing a Thursday deadline to decide whether to accept a buyout offer from the Trump administration or remain in their position. Those who chose to stay still risked being laid off. U.S. District Judge George O'Toole, a Bill Clinton appointee, ruled in favor of several labor unions that had requested a temporary restraining order against the plan spearheaded by Trump adviser Elon Musk. The judge didn't express an opinion on the legality of the program and directed administration officials to extend the deadline to apply for the program until after a hearing scheduled for this Monday. President Trump's push to reduce the size of the government is unprecedented, causing turmoil in Washington, and triggering protests and union concerns over potential legal violations. So far, more than 60,000 employees, about 2% of the federal civilian workforce, have accepted the buyout with more expected to join them. It remains unclear how many of the federal government's 2.3 million civilian workers will ultimately agree to the offer, which guarantees pay through September if they resign by Thursday. U.S.. taxpayers funded transgender opera in Columbia and trans comic book in Peru The United States Agency for International Development, which was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, has become a conduit for waste, fraud and abuse. With a budget of over $50 billion, USAID is one of the largest official aid agencies in the world and accounts for more than half of all U.S. foreign assistance. Thanks to Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency the taxpayer-funded gravy train is finally coming to an end. Outside the White House, Karoline Leavitt, President Trump's Press Secretary, listed some objectionable expenditures of the United States Agency for International Development. LEAVITT: “If you look at the waste and abuse that has run through USAID over the past several years, these are some of the insane priorities that that organization has been spending money on. $1.5 million to advance [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] in Serbia's workplaces. $70,000 for a production of a DEI musical in Ireland. $47,000 for a transgender opera in Colombia, $32,000 for a transgender comic book in Peru. “I don't know about you, but as an American taxpayer, I don't want my dollars going towards this crap. I know the American people don't either. That's exactly what Elon Musk has been tasked by President Trump to do: to get the fraud, waste and abuse out of our federal government.” Nearly all 14,000 staff members for the U.S. Agency for International Development, will be placed on leave tonight, according to the agency. In addition, all overseas missions for USAID had been ordered to shut down yesterday, reports CBS News. Jump-roping champion saves teen out of icy waters And finally, a famous jump-roper, David Fisher, recently saved a young man from drowning after he fell through the ice on a frozen lake, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. Near his home in Westfield, Indiana, Fisher, age 61, discovered a teenage boy who had fallen into the icy waters through thin ice as he tried to rescue his dog who had met the same fate, according to the Washington Post. Fisher instinctively grabbed the two long cloth ropes he uses for Double Dutch jumping and ran out to the lake. In God's providence, the boy grabbed the jump rope, got back onto the ice, and Fisher pulled him to safety. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” Or, in this case, an absolute stranger! This blessedly short episode encapsulates the types of English colonial government in the 17th and 18th centuries, which were chartered corporations, proprietary "counties palatine," and royal colonies directly ruled by the Crown through a governor and advisors. Technically abstruse as these distinctions may have been, they would become increasingly important starting in the 1670s, and will be useful background for much of what comes next. Reacting to the repressive religious policies of England in 1630, over the next ten years, about 20,000 Puritans emigrated from England to Massachusetts and the neighboring colonies during what came to be known as the Puritan migration to New England. One such migrating Puritan was English minister Roger Williams, who founded the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Clause 2: Qualifications of Members. No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. The Constitution provides three requirements for Representatives: A Representative must be at least 25 years old, must be an inhabitant of the state in which he or she is elected, and must have been a citizen of the United States for the previous seven years. There is no requirement that a Representative reside within the district in which he or she represents; although this is usually the case, there have been occasional exceptions. The Supreme Court has interpreted the Qualifications Clause as an exclusive list of qualifications that cannot be supplemented by a house of Congress exercising its Section 5 authority to "judge...the...qualifications of its own members" or by a state in its exercise of its Section 4 authority to prescribe the "times, places and manner of holding elections for Senators and Representatives." The Supreme Court, as well as other federal courts, have repeatedly barred states from additional restrictions, such as imposing term limits on members of Congress, allowing members of Congress to be subject to recall elections, or requiring that Representatives live in the congressional district in which they represent. A 2002 Congressional Research Service report also found that no state could implement a qualification that a Representative not be a convicted felon or incarcerated. However, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that certain ballot access requirements, such as filing fees and submitting a certain number of valid petition signatures do not constitute additional qualifications and thus few Constitutional restrictions exist as to how harsh ballot access laws can be. Finally, although the U.S. Constitution places no restrictions on state or local office-holders simultaneously holding federal office, most state constitutions today effectively ban state and local office holders from also holding federal office at the same time by prohibiting federal office holders from also holding state and local office. Unlike other state-mandated restrictions, these sorts of prohibitions are constitutional as long they are enforced purely at the state level (for example against active federal office holders seeking to obtain or hold a state or local office). Clause 3: Apportionment of Representatives and taxes. Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. The number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least one Representative; and until such enumeration shall be made, the State of New Hampshire shall be entitled to chuse three, Massachusetts eight, Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations one, Connecticut five, New-York six, New Jersey four, Pennsylvania eight, Delaware one, Maryland six, Virginia ten, North Carolina five, South Carolina five, and Georgia three. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

In South Kingstown, there's an odd monument hidden away in the bushes off Tower Hill Road. It's a four-sided granite pillar covered, from top to bottom on all sides, in a written inscription. And this inscription tells a story. But not one of a famous battle or prominent leader or politician or historical landmark. It tells the story of a gruesome murder that took place here.To Visit: Map to Koch Eye Associates in Wakefield, at 20 Hampton Way, Wakefield, RI 02879. You won't see it at first, but if you walk to the edge of the busy road (be safe) right in line with the dumpster, you'll see a break in the bushes where the monument is hidden. After much debate, the framers of the Constitution decided to make population the basis of apportioning the seats in the House of Representatives and the tax liability among the states. To facilitate this, the Constitution mandates that a census be conducted every ten years to determine the population of each state and of the nation as a whole and establishes a rule for who shall be counted or excluded from the count. As the new form of government would become operational prior to the completion of a national census, the Constitution also provides for a temporary apportionment of seats. Originally, the population of each state and of the nation as a whole was ascertained by adding to the whole number of free Persons, three-fifths the number of all other Persons (for example, slaves), but excluding non-taxed Native Americans. This Constitutional rule, known as the three-fifths compromise, was a compromise between Southern and Northern states in which three-fifths of the population of slaves would be counted for enumeration purposes and for the apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives and of taxes among the states. It was, according to Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story (writing in 1833), a "matter of compromise and concession, confessedly unequal in its operation, but a necessary sacrifice to that spirit of conciliation, which was indispensable to the union of states having a great diversity of interests, and phyal condition, and political institutions". Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment (1868) later superseded Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 and explicitly repealed the compromise. Following the completion of each census, Congress is empowered to use the aggregate population in all the states (according to the prevailing Constitutional rule for determining population) to determine the relative population of each state to the population of the whole, and, based on its calculations, to establish the appropriate size of the House and to allocate a particular number of representatives to each state according to its share of the national population. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that the original name for Providence was Providence Plantation? Prior to 2020, the state's official name was State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. State Senator Harold Metts introduced a resolution for another ballot referendum on removing the words "and Providence Plantations" from the state's name, saying, "Whatever the meaning of the term 'plantations' in the context of Rhode Island's history, it carries a horrific connotation when considering the tragic and racist history of our nation." Now for our feature story: Rhode Island has surpassed 2,500 deaths from the coronavirus. In a state of just over 1 million people, this is a heady proposition. According to the CDC, more than 500,000 people in the US have passed away due to Covid as we approach the 1 year anniversary shutdowns related to the virus. The Rhode Island Department of Public Health said last Saturday morning that the state death total from the virus sat at 2,502 even though there has been some positive news. Cases are trending downwards and Rhode Island has outperformed the states with the worst infection rates, having a flatter and less spiky rate of infection. The health department also had promising news with nearly 68,000 Rhode Islanders now fully vaccinated against the virus and more doses on the way. As a reminder, Rhode Island has one of the country's oldest populations and remaining vigilant and careful over the next few months is especially important as vaccinations rates increase and the threat of coronavirus hopefully comes to an end. Did you know that Rhode Island’s technical name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations! We are the United States of America, not united people of America! Louisiana and Delaware are ON NOTICE for being shady! Colin is also here to plug his new HBO Max special/documentary COLIN QUINN & FRIENDS: A PARKING LOT COMEDY SHOW where Chris also was apart of. Bob Enyart reports, BEL style, on the lawsuits exposing widespread election fraud. How do I hate thee, let me count the ways. When the Democrats push us to defend the Republicans, we hate them even more! Bob first reads his reply to Misty, a Canadian pro-abortion leftist, who was incensed after learning that Bob despised her. (And though Bob does not have exhaustive foreknowledge, in truth, he despised her even before he had ever heard of her.) Then we aired the 15-second Fox News clip of devil anchor Sandra Smith reversing the We Report, You Decide to We Report You Shut Your Face. And just before alleging election fraud, in the extreme, against the Democrats, Bob explained why he really hates the Democrats for pushing him to defend the Republicans, when the righteous indignation of the Republicans against the Dems for not following the Constitution is itself completely fraudulent. (That is, the Republicans UTTERLY REJECT and themselves ignore the Constitution, especially at Articles vi and xiii.) Bob then gets to the 2020 election fraud as per decades of systematic Democrat corruption. * VeggieTales in 2008 Predicted the 2020 Election: * The Constitution is Unconstitutional: From kgov.com/unconstitutional... America has three primary founding documents, the Declaration and its two Constitutions, the Articles of Confederation from 1781 and the current U.S. Constitution from 1789. Yes, Grand Masters have controversial opinions. Usually, we don't get to hear them. Today, we do. Buckle up. Those in power must watch their tongue. It can be almost dangerous for someone in a high office to share controversial opinions. We see this in politics, civil & charitable organizations, and of course, social & fraternal bodies like ours. If a sitting Grand Master were to voice a radical opinion it could have quite an impact on the Fraternity, and maybe not for the better. However, when the word "Past" gets added to your Grand Lodge title, and there IS no higher office left for you to seek... well, then, I suppose, you're free to tell it like it is. And that is exactly what Most Worshipful Iacobucci does in part 2 of our conversation. Being Grand Master has its perks, eh? Most Worshipful Peter Iacobucci and Right Worshipful Gil Fontes are the junior Past Grand Master and Past Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. They join your hosts Darrell and Bryan on this special two-part adventure to share their story, their journey, and their thoughts. In this episode - part 2 - things get a little more interesting. MW Iacobucci shares his thoughts on the personalities of the Grand Masters of Rhode Island who came before him, and what was necessary or useful then vs. the approach needed during his term. He goes further, sharing his thoughts on how best to rule and govern both as Grand Master and as District Deputy Grand Master. Our esteemed guests share their views on the differences between jurisdictions, and how it affects everything from daily operation & ideology, to issues like innovation, safety & guns in the Lodge, and even women in the Lodge. Finally, we learn how MW Iacobucci and RW Fontes got roped into higher office in the first place, and how the future looks. What's in this episode: MW Iacobucci’s thoughts on personalities of past GM’s in RI His thoughts on how best to rule and govern as Grand Master and District Deputy Grand Master - and how NOT to Differences between jurisdictions yesterday, today, and tomorrow, including Day to day operation Ideology Innovation Safety and guns in Lodge And women in the Lodge And lastly, how MW Iacobucci (and RW Fontes) actually got roped in to office in the first place. What's it take to be Grand Master? Well, we asked an ACTUAL Grand Master (and Grand Marshal) exactly that. Their answers, insights, and opinions may surprise you. The reality is - there's a lot to it. Many Masons may view the Grand Master as the absolute power and authority of a given Masonic Jurisdiction. Others may view him as a roadblock to progress, or an anchor they must drag on the way to positive change. Some, perhaps new Masons, may even view him as some untouchable, mythical, unicorn-like being atop a glorious, glowing pedestal. The truth is, it's not quite like any of that. They discuss how the pivotal situations and choices that brought them to Masonry. We learn about Grand Lodge of Rhode Island's interesting (and perhaps unique) progressive grand officer line. RW Fontes also delves into the real role of a Grand Marshal, and how essential it is to a Grand Master. They share their rare perspective on how a bird's eye view of Masonry compares to Blue Lodge thought processes. And finally, MW Iacobucci shares his perspective on issues facing lodges, and what the role of the Grand Lodge & Grand Master SHOULD be in aiding with those issues (vs. what most Masons think it should be). What's in this episode: MW Peter Iacobucci and RW Gil Fontes, junior Past Grand Master and Past Grand Marshal of The Grand Lodge of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, join us to discuss: How they came to Masonry, and their journey through the Grand Line How the the progression of officers in the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island works The real role of the Grand Marshal Taking the big picture view of Masonry vs living on the “blue lodge ground level” MW Iacobucci’s perspective on issues facing lodges, and what the role of Grand Lodge & the Grand Master should be vs what most Masons think it is… and what the Grand Master thinks it is. Representative Marcia Ranglin-Vassell (D-Providence) tells Tara Granahan about the legislation she plans to introduce that would eliminate "Providence Plantations" from the state's name.
In many ways it had earned the nickname Rogue’s Island. Founded by Roger Williams when he had been expelled from Massachusetts colony for sedition and heresy, it had become the home of what many considered the most radical elements of the Puritans population in the colonies. While the colony itself had grown and prospered as a Mercantile hub, especially with the rise of the Transatlantic slave trade, the radical, rogue nature of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations had remained. By 1764 a group of Loyalists known as the Tory Junto, concerned with the revolutionary streak that ran through the Colony would go as far as to petition the Court of St. James to repeal the Colonies Royal Charter and replace it with Royal Government. In the end they would fail. They would be chased from Rhode Island. The colony, on the other hand, would remain largely unchanged, with many committed to the cause of Independence even in those early days. That independent spirit that refused to relent to King and Parliament would become clear when, less than a decade later residents ran aground the HMS Gaspee, a British Custom’s schooner under the command of the increasingly zealous Lieutenant William Dudingston. While Admiral John Montagu, once a staunch defender of the unpopular Lieutenant Dudingston, had the commander sent back to England for Court Marshall, he found himself powerless to punish those who had burned the Royal Vessel in Narragansett Bay. Though charged with treason by a Royal Commission, it wouldn’t last as the matter was eventually dropped. Though it wasn’t the first or the last act of defiance by the Colony, it had demonstrated how far Rhode Island would go and the protection that its residents would be afforded by its Governor Joseph Wanton. In that spirit of independence, the Rhode Island Legislature would meet on May 4th, 1776. It had been little over a year since the fighting had broken out at Lexington and Concord, since the first shots had been fired, engulfing the thirteen colonies in war, and violence and bloodshed, as they entered open rebellion against the British Crown. Rhode Island would eagerly send its troops. Merchants and privateers by trade, accomplished and creative sailors by experience, it would furnish the Continental Forces with the Commander-in-Chief of its Navy, Commodore Esek Hopkins, brother of former Governor turned Delegate to the Continental Congress. Samuel Hopkins. Now, as the Continental Congress met to discuss what this loose Confederation of Colonies would do, Rhode Island busied itself with its own future and the path to its own independence. Drafted by Jonathan Arnold, who would go on to serve as a surgeon in the Continental Army before twice serving in the Congress of the Confederation, the preamble of the Resolution would read: WHEREAS in all states, existing by compact, protection and allegiance are reciprocal, the latter being only due in consequence of the former: And whereas George the Third, King of Great Britain, forgetting his dignity, regardless of the compact most solemnly entered into, ratified and confirmed, to the inhabitants of this Colony, by his illustrious ancestors, and till of late fully recognized by him—and entirely departing from the duties and character of a good King, instead of protecting, is endeavoring to destroy the good people of this Colony, and of all the United Colonies, by sending fleets and armies to America, to confiscate our property, and spread fire, sword and desolation, throughout our country, in order to compel us to submit to the most debasing and detestable tyranny, whereby we are obliged by necessity, and it becomes our highest duty, to use every means, with which God and nature have furnished us, in support of our invaluable rights and privileges; to oppose that power which is exerted only for our destruction. In less than two hundred words they would lay out their case in the simplest possible terms, listing their grievances with the Crown and the Parliament, calling the policies of the Crown and Parliament to the forefront for their tyranny and oppression, before the resolution itself was read. Allegiance to the King was replaced with allegiance to the State, the courts were removed from Royal Authority and placed under home rule and the business of the government would no longer be conducted in the name of the George III or his heirs, it would be a government of Rhode Island. With a stroke of the pen and a vote of the Legislature Rhode Island, long reputed as the most independent of the Colonies, would become the first of the thirteen to separate itself from the Crown and Mother Country, and declare its independence. No longer would it hold itself under the authority of a King in a far distant capital. No longer would it hold itself to the authority of a Parliament it was not represented in. Even as they closed that session of the Legislature, the feeling, the attitude and tone would be different for them as, instead of declaring, as they so often before had, “God save the King”, now they declared “God save the United Colonies.” Nicholas Cooke, elected to replace Governor Wanton in 1775, would write to General George Washington shortly after, “I also enclose a copy of an Act discharging the inhabitants of this Colony from allegiance to the King of Great Britain, which was carried in the House of Deputies, after a debate, with but six dissentient voices, there being upwards of sixty members present.” Two months later, to the day, the Declaration of Independence, the great charter of American national freedom, would pronounce freedom across all Rhode Island’s sister colonies, finally breaking the ties that bound it to the British Empire, as sovereignty separate from the Crown rang through the colonies, and set these United Colonies on an irreversible course towards nationhood and republic. Proudly the delegates of Rhode Island would affix their names to the document. The signature of William Ellery would be second only to that of John Hancock, while Hopkins, now well advanced in years but still a force to be reckoned with, would seek to steady his palsied ridden right hand, declaring, “my hand trembles, but my heart does not.” Once the war was over Rhode Island would become the fourth of the thirteen colonies to ratify the Articles of Confederation, that first charter of political freedom that governed the new United States, but it would, in that independent nature, initially refuse to take on the Constitution. It would only be when a Bill of Rights, declaring the rights and freedoms of the individual, was guaranteed that it would become the last of the original thirteen to adopt. Even then it would be reluctantly, having grown weary from those years of colonial rule of giving too much power and authority to a centralized government in a distant capital, in the hands of an Executive and Legislature removed from their daily lives.
