Imagine being at a Broadway show, and the lead actor is playing a character who's heartbroken by the sudden death of her only child. As she enters the stage, just for a moment, she is nonchalant, jumping into character only after she is within full view of the audience. Even if you don't consciously see this, you still might feel that something is off. The same is true when you, as a speaker, appear in front of a crowd. Within a few seconds of seeing you, the audience decides whether or not they have confidence in you and, accordingly, whether or not they should have confidence in the information you share with them. The fascinating thing is that, for most people, this evaluation is made at the unconscious level. Consequently, to connect with your audience and instantly demonstrate confidence, you, like an actor, must be in character before your audience sees you. You can't wait until you're walking on stage to have energy. Nor can you wait until you begin talking to employ the body language that aligns with your message. If you do, you'll run the risk of not connecting with your audience from the very first moment. Toni is with Jan Muhlfeit global strategist, coach of Olympic games winners and author of ‘The Positive Leader' discussing the art of speaking and why Jan is on a personal mission to help others unlock and achieve their potential. Jan believes that making an emotional connection with your audience is vital and shares some of the various strategies that can support this connection when you are in front of an audience This is an inspiring listen as Jan focuses on what successful leaders do and why as a public speaker you are the ultimate director of your audience. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leadership is about how many people are going to follow you through both the good times and the challenging times. I believe that if people have an emotional connection to what they do then they will work better Those organisations that are able to unlock human potential will be those that are the most successful. Inspiration is about having a vision and others believing it alongside you As a manager, you need to manage the energy not the time You can learn from the past but need to be in the present The more you exercise your talents the better they become I have the ability to find the best in each person Inspiration is different from motivation; you only need to be inspired once but you can be motivated over and over If you want to inspire people you must be authentic and tell your own story and any interesting story has both ups and downs Communication is about your audience, not about you. You need to make an emotional connection with others. When you begin any presentation getting the attention of your audience at the start will begin to move them to a point of flow When you understand who you are, you can understand who you can be BEST MOMENTS ‘I'm always looking to see what is best in each person' ‘If you want to make other people happy do something you love' ‘If you do something you love you are often in flow' VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property Jan Muhlfeit ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Successful leader, high energy, hands-on public speaker, author, facilitator and regular contributor to ‘Entrepreneur.com’ Tina Frey Clemen shares amazing content with Toni about the art and skill of facilitation, presentation and speaking. She explains why you need feedback and how to move from competency to mastery along with the power of the language you use in changing your perspective. The Art of facilitating is about understanding both the theories and science that underpin the message and the responses of the people you are working with and this is a masterclass for anyone in how to achieve this. KEY TAKEAWAYS Facilitation, presentation and speaking are both an art form and a skill. In the beginning, I was terrified and not good but I persevered because it was something I was in love with You have listen to the feedback and change, feedback is a feast that you have to eat Moving from competency to mastery is about stealing from the best. You have to understand the theories and the science and take from others and then you have to do it and keep doing it again and again. Everyone makes mistakes and I am able to teach about my mistakes to my facilitation warriors. When you are facilitating it’s not about entertaining and it’s not about you it’s about the message and ensuring the people who you are facilitating retain it and apply the skill set themselves. Thought, feeling, action is about understanding what the thought is, the feeling it brings and the action you take. Having a different perspective can bring a shift in the way you feel. By using different language you can show up differently. You can control fear and use it as a tool if you shift your perspective. The definition of facilitation is sharing the learning and getting out of the way so that the learner can learn in the way they need to. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m a self-confessed facilitation nerd’ ‘External feedback is vital because with internal feedback you can focus only on the negatives’ ‘The art of the question back the most important technique you can learn’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property RPC America ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Toni talks with the inspirational Jose who in his journey to becoming a successful global speaker uncovered ground breaking insights for personal development that turned his obstacles into triumphant public speaking and stand up comedy performances. He shares inspirational advice on how even negative reactions or the worst case scenario happening are things you can get through and learn from. There is something for everyone in this episode about overcoming fear, taking action and expressing yourself so the whole world knows who you are. KEY TAKEAWAYS It was millions of micro moments of bravery doing what I feared. When you are a public speaker you need to know your audience. Joining toastmasters was an opportunity to expose myself in a controlled manner on a weekly basis. Controlling your breathing is an important element when public speaking. Everyone faces challenges and there is a level of ear but the more you put yourself in situations when you need to face your fear the more in control of yourself you become. Negative reactions can play a big role in becoming de-sensitised. Even if the worst-case scenario does happen you will still be here and there is a lesson around it. If fear is something you know is going to be there, it’s a constant, and will not stop you taking action Friends and family almost never change how they think about you, the dynamics don’t change they are the people who know your essence. It may have been that outside world didn’t know you because you didn’t express you. When you show up you are not just showing up for yourself you are showing up for others and letting them know they matter. BEST MOMENTS ‘With a change in mindset fear becomes a trampoline that you metaphorically jump on’ ‘It may have been that outside world didn’t know you because you didn’t express yourself’ ‘Do it for yourself and to impact others’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. In this episode, Toni is interviewed by senior executive, property investor, board advisor, and business mentor Jeannette Lintfoot for her podcast Brave, Bold, Brilliant. They discuss how Toni and her husband juggled having two little boys to look after and two full-time jobs with starting a property business. As well as how they borrowed from other people to get started rather than following the traditional financing route. Toni is passionate about helping others through being an educator and public speaker. She explains how she overcame fear and risk to transition from her day job in HR to fulfilling her dream to help others by teaching them to become property developers. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is possible to build a huge property empire even if you do not have much money of your own, at the beginning. Being curious and becoming a lifelong learner is highly beneficial regardless of your chosen career. Fear is a good thing because it makes you stop and think, but you must not let it overwhelm and paralyze you. You need to fully understand the risk, then do what you can to mitigate them. When you have bad experiences, learn from them, and use them to spur you on. Sacrifices are an investment. It´s short term pain for long-term gain. Be true to yourself, do things your way, don´t worry about being judged by others. You need to be sure that you are striving to achieve the right goals. It's all too easy to put a lot of time and energy into something that does not bring you happiness. Approach things in a way that is congruent with your values. You gain more by helping others. Seek out and take advantage of win-win situations. BEST MOMENTS ‘I´m a massive believer in helping other people to understand and realize their potential.’ ´Many people have this massive desire to achieve things, but fear holds them back.’ ‘I see sacrifices as an investment.’ ´People are going to judge you anyway, so let them judge you for being who you are.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES ttps://www.jeannettelinfootassociates.com/ Brave, Bold, Brilliant podcast series Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Billy explains why speaking from the heart and understanding the fundamentals of discipline and hard work are vital if you want to keep moving forward. Speaking is a great way of reaching an audience and connecting with people You have to understand the fundamentals of discipline and hard work Do the work every day and keep moving forward and things will work out. Do the things you have to do even if you don’t want to Part of the process in business is making mistakes but you have to do this responsibly. I’m going to speak with heart because I only have one chance to speak to an audience Light and shade is what makes someone a good speaker When you speak authenticity, it draws people into you If you speak with authenticity, believability and congruence, you will impact your audience If people don’t know you they can’t do business with you. Michael Tow, Actor, Director and Producer is with Toni discussing his journey and the positives of having a transferable skill set and always taking every opportunity. When you put those, you admire on a pedestal it can be easy to think that they are very different but when you realise that everyone is going through the same thing you are, the same fears and concerns you are in a better position to gain perspective. The more you progress the less the fear and Michael shares great advice on how to develop as a public speaker. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being on stage as an actor was so freeing You can be one person on stage and a completely different person away from the stage The ability to know you can do something is very freeing Connecting with people and helping them with something is what drives me forward and speaking and presentations helped. It’s about showing up taking the opportunities to be able to move towards your goals. Through Clubhouse I saw an opportunity to reach out to actors who needed help. Clubhouse is a great opportunity for public speaking. The people you put on a pedestal are the same as you they are going through the same thing as you. If you are just like them why not give it a go. When you think about the worst that can happen you also need to think about the best that can happen. You can go through a horrible scenario and come through it learning something. You limit yourself when you say others are at a different level, everyone is at a different place in their journey and will have had different opportunities. If you want to improve your public speaking the key is to continually practice and put the work in. Toni talks with property strategist Jackie Tomes about how public speaking has been a vital part of her journey. As someone who has created her own successful businesses, Jackie now teaches others to do the same and uses public speaking to share her message about both the good times and the things she has had to navigate around in business. Developing and raising the profile of your brand is key if you are taking a long term view with your business and public speaking plays an important part in this as Jackie explains in this inspiring episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you are taking a long term view in business, having a brand is vital. Building a brand and raising your profile is all about the value you give and this grows goodwill. Public speaking is the vehicle you can use to get your message out there. It’s about achieving a balance between the value you give to achieve credibility and the processes you have for people who want to know more and pay for your services. Make sure it’s clear how you can help people and how they can work with you. Know what your personal values are, whose opinion you care about and that there will always be people who don’t agree with you. Deciding who you care about is a personal thing and will be different for everyone. Is the person giving you feedback someone you admire and respect? As humans, we take on what others say about us but it is more about the person saying it and where they are in that point in time. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but you don’t need to take it on board. When people judge you remember it’s on their standards, not yours. If you can find a way to be authentically you when speaking in front of an audience that’s freedom. BEST MOMENTS ‘We would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for the public speaking route I took’ ‘Public speaking is a huge part of the profile we have built’ ‘If you nurture it and treat it in the right way a brand will pay dividends throughout your life’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property Tomes Homes website Property Strategy website ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Toni is with Tony Courtney Brown who is in the process of opening his Bio-Resonance Clinic. He shares the importance of Bio-Resonance, what it is, how it can help and his own experience. Tony explains not only his journey but how his passion for Bio-Resonance has shaped his mission and public speaking. Everyone has a story within them and sharing your story is about serving other people. We can often think that public speaking is about being in front of a large audience but it can take many forms and you can spread your message in lots of different ways to help others. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you have an entrepreneurial spirit, it is a part of you and everything you do. There is a balance in life between challenge and support. If we are supported in one area of life there will be challenges in another. You can achieve great things if you put yourself in the right position and having a problem-solving skill set is what makes it possible. Whatever the problem it’s all about working out the required action. You can be a public speaker without standing on a stage in front of an audience. When you consult and pitch to groups of managers you are speaking publicly When you are getting your message out there it doesn’t have to be about a sales it can be about an obstacle you’ve overcome or a product or service you have benefitted from. You open up to others and they open up to you. You realise everyone has something in their past and it has affected them profoundly. People begin to see the value in the hidden bits of them they have revealed. Everyone realises they have something to share that is of value and can help other people. Think about something in your life that was a challenge, think about how it might be of help to others. Take a deep breath and work out how to spread your message and tell your story. Toni explains why every person is a salesperson - they just need to understand how to serve, solve and sell in the right way. When you pitch effectively and in the right way the product will sell itself and you will be able to effectively grow your business. When you approach each customer with a view to helping them to solve a problem or reach a goal you are able to pitch to serve them through solving their problem and the sales become a by-product. It’s human nature to want to buy but not be sold to and Toni shares great advice and information on how to bring the right people to you through pitching to serve and solve. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pitching is about sharing what you have that is valuable to the client. We all want to buy but not be sold to, finding an elegant way to pitch will bring the right people to you. Approach each customer with a view to helping them solve a problem or reach a goal and not with selling a product or service. When you are trying to solve a problem for the client then you are serving not selling. An objection can be viewed as just a request for more information You need to identify your product and service, the problem it solves. Identify which group of people you are serving. What makes your product or service stand out? The more people you help the more you will sell. The goal is how many people can you help and serve, with the sales becoming a by-product of it. Identify your product or service, who you are serving, the problem you are solving and get out of your own way. BEST MOMENTS ‘You identify what is needed to solve the problem’ The more people that you can help to solve their problem the more money you will make ‘Does your marketing identify the problem and what your solution is?’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Toni explains how to elegantly move between sections of your presentation with a bridge in this episode. A good bridge will be invisible to the audience but have the power to bring continuity of rapport and elevate the presentation to the next level. Toni is passionate about how to use bridges effectively in any presentation because of the difference they make and she shares great content on the various ways to create bridges and how to get the most impact from them in public speaking in this informative episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS There needs to be a linking piece between the sections of a speech. An elegant bridge is something that links 2 parts together. An effective bridge is not noticeable to the audience. It can link 2 parts that are closely related, or quite different sections. It helps you to achieve continuity of rapport. It removes the possibility of sales shock as it will take the audience seamlessly from the content to the sales element of the presentation. A good bridge will be invisible and effectively helps you to deliver the message. It could be a testimonial, linking phrase, analogy or a question. Eye contact and a pause can be your elegant bridge. There is a power to the pause if it’s used effectively A foundational phrase can be used throughout the presentation to elegantly bridge and the repetition of the phrase will stick in the minds of the audience. BEST MOMENTS ‘A repeating phrase eloquently woven into your speech can successfully stick in the minds of your audience’ ‘I have a massive passion for the use of an elegant bridge because it makes such a difference to your speech’ ‘It’s about the elegant ups and downs throughout a presentation’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. It’s always about the preparation it’s a key element in any situation. You need to know about your subject because there are always things out of your control but being prepared is within your control. You should be authentic and bring yourself to any public speaking. If you deliver what you say you are going to and have previous achievements behind you have credibility with others. Trying to put yourself in the shoes of the other person is very helpful in understanding how you and your pitch will be perceived. Being of service is everything and selling is serving. Toni is with David Seigler Successful Deal Packager, Property Investor and Public Speaker. David is an expert problem solver in sales, helping people to get what they want, identifying the problem and offering a solution to the problem. With extensive experience and expertise in sales, David discusses the importance of being authentic and having belief in the product or service you are selling. They also discuss how once mastery is achieved and you know what the rules and systems are you can move onwards to a level of artistry in public speaking. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sales is the most important aspect of any business What I did was paint pictures for the clients to show them what they could achieve. Selling is about finding a problem and offering a solution. My expertise and knowledge about selling has come through exposure and experience. Painting a picture is perfect for one on one sales By giving a real-life scenario you show people the features and benefits along with the possible pitfalls. With investors, you have to be who they need you to be and when you are working one to one you use different facets of yourself. When you are interacting with clients and investors you have to adapt to be what they need. You need to search to find out what the ‘why’ is for a person. Getting nervous is part of the process and nerves are about being congruent. An audience can see who you are it’s the humanity that they understand, they want you to do well. Once you have mastered the system you can move up to a level of artistry. There is a joyous aspect to public speaking. Learn to listen more than speak. Ask and then listen carefully to the answer. BEST MOMENTS ‘The silence is key in a face to face because I’m engaging with them emotionally. Then I can then offer a solution’ ‘I only want people to buy if it’s a solution for their problem’ ‘My confidence comes from knowing that I’m financially solvent. ‘With the right systems and support, you could be embracing learning and implementing a system that helps you reach your goals’ In this fascinating episode, Toni explains in detail the importance of the ‘story’ model in getting your message across. She uses some great examples and provides the system and process that you can use to effectively implement the ‘story’ model across any area of your life. We all inherently seek interaction with others and this is a great way to engage and get your message across with emotion and impact. KEY TAKEAWAYS The facts in a story will tell what happened but the story will sell the idea – the feelings the sounds, the place, the emotion. Inspiration and impact are important aspects of telling a story. The story model is then, now, how & action. Then– a low point or showcases something that changed your viewpoint. Now– this is your achievements told with humility by giving credit to the process and system, this is the connection point in the story where the listener thinks ‘if they can I can’ How –this is the system or the process the credit is given elsewhere. Action– this is where the speaker tells you how you can do this as well. You can effectively use the story model within your business. People want to understand how you can help them. Having a system works really well If you have a mini-story that you can expand and contract according to the situation then you can engage people helping them to gain a clear idea, through your story about what you do. This format works in every element of your life. BEST MOMENTS ‘Your current position does not determine your outcome’ ‘Your current path doesn’t necessarily lead to your ultimate destination’ ‘The confused mind doesn’t buy so people must be about what the product or service being sold is’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘Ultimately when you are pitching you are creating a need or desire’ In this podcast, Toni, in response to a question from her community, looks at the difference between a presentation and a pitch. Presentations can come in many different formats and a pitch should have a clearly defined call to action. Starting with the end in mind is vital if you want to be sure whether it’s a pitch or presentation that you should be doing to achieve your desired outcome. A good salesperson can begin with a presentation and then move to a pitch providing solutions to problems you didn’t even know you had. Listen in to find out how you can understand the differences and ensure you’re your presentations and pitches secure your desired outcome. KEY TAKEAWAYS Presenting The process of presenting a topic to an audience typically a demonstration, an introduction, lecture or speech A pitch is meant to inform, persuade, inspire, motivate or build goodwill. A presentation may be used to showcase information and you share the content required. Pitching The focus in pitching is usually around sales or selling It is a line of talk that attempts to persuade someone with a planned presentation it’s designed to be either an introduction to a product or service or expands on the description of the product and is designed to achieve sales of the product or service. The difference The main difference is presenting is informing and pitching is selling. When you give a presentation, you are sharing facts and information, when pitching you are still sharing information but there is an end goal – to sell something Start with the end in mind what is the desired outcome? Do you want people to enjoy listening and learning something? Do you want people to need what you have been talking about? When you are creating a call to action it has to be clear, it has to be something people understand. Make sure it’s concise if people know with clarity and in a really simplistic way what they need to do to achieve the desired result they are more likely to take action. Make it simple, keep it brief and make it clear. Ultimately when you are pitching you are creating a need or desire. Always start with the end in mind and if you create a need, you can elegantly merge your presentation into a pitch. BEST MOMENTS ‘Presentations can come in many different formats’ ‘They need to know exactly what to do to get the product or service’ ‘He provided solutions to problems I didn’t even know I had’ ‘You need to pitch so well that by the end of the presentation they feel they really need to have the product or service’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘There are so many ways that you, as the speaker, can control the energy in the room You need to take the hand of the audience and lead them in the direction you would like them to go’ In this episode, Toni shares her response to the question ‘How do you take a room and bring them up in energy ?’ She explains how as the speaker you can not only manage audience energy but change it throughout a speech or presentation to increase impact and the emotional experience of your audience. If you have ever been to a presentation where the energy it too much or experienced the speaker who has no energy? then listen in and find out how as the speaker you can bring the right level of energy to your presentation. KEY TAKEAWAYS You must gauge and meet the audience where they are at when you enter the room and then move the energy to bring your audience to where you want them to be. It’s about being conscious and aware of where your audience is but not allowing the energy of the room to impact on you. Before you’ve started your speech you need to identify the energy within the room. Do this by listening and being part of the room before you speak The way in which you visually appear and audibly begin can capture the attention of the audience. The way you dress and the props you use will impact on the energy and mood in the room When you want to lower the energy within the room to create a more intimate mood or connection lowering your volume and using a softer tone can achieve this effect Altering your tone, volume and pace can alter the energy in the room and bring the audience to the level of energy you want. One of the most poignant ways you can achieve a connection is through silence. If you can master the art of the pause it can really help you to connect with the audience. Movement can help you to connect to your audience and motion creates emotion. Your movement influences the mood of the audience taking a seat and pausing following a walk around creates a connection point with your audience. By amending your position, pose and tone you can create the emotion in the room and in turn affect the energy Before you alter the energy in the room its important you understand your own energy We focus on the energy in the room but the audience will feed off your energy so it’s vital to manage your own energy before you step onto the stage. Identify your own energy, use it as your starting pint and be conscious of the energy you want to convey to the audience. BEST MOMENTS ‘The worst thing you can do is come in with the energy you would like them to have when they are not already there’ ‘If your audience is timid and tame it can affect your energy as the speaker. So, it is vital you manage your own energy’ ‘The element of surprise will alter the mood in the room’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property Rob Moore Mark Homer ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. In today’s episode, Toni asks the thought-provoking question, can an introvert be a public speaker? It’s a common misconception that in order to be a good speaker in public, you have to be extroverted, but that isn’t the case. Listen on to find out why... KEY TAKEAWAYS Extroverts are outgoing, socially confident, they get involved, and they like to talk. Introverts are seen as shy and socially awkward. Winston Churchill, Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln are among the greatest speakers of all time. But they were also self-professed introverts. Introverts spend much time alone, which actually serves them well in terms of time for research, writing, prepare and refine and practice. The audience wants you to succeed. Even if you look a little nervous this can sometimes work to your advantage, because people will will you to succeed. If you’re an introvert, it makes you hyper self-aware, and this can only be a good thing when you’re a speaker. You’ll more than likely feel more connected to your audience BEST MOMENTS ‘Speaking is not an act of extroversion’ ‘An introvert looks inside to draw their energy’ ‘People buy into you because they can see your authenticity’ ‘Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa had the ability to listen to their audience’ ‘Remember, the audience wants you to succeed. Believe it or not, there’s more to public speaking than the speech itself. What about the dozens of other things in our lives that can affect how we think, how we perform, and of course, how we speak on the day? In this episode, Toni gives you a concise and practical guide to dealing with the non-speaker side of public speaking, from sleeping properly to creating emotion through motion. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sleep - It’s imperative to get enough sleep before any kind of engagement. How can you expect to deal with a room full of listeners with whom you may need to interact and stimulate, if your mind isn’t firing on all cylinders? Keep hydrated - It might seem like a small thing, but a lack of hydration can affect your delivery, which can cascade down into other issues. If you’re focussing on the way it’s affecting your speech, your performance will suffer. Getting in state - The practice of preparing yourself mentally and physically for your presentation, whether by a personal ritual or a certain routine you adhere to. Get yourself into the zone. Motion - Motion creates emotion. Moving on stage increases the energy between you and your audience, but it’s also the case in terms of preparation. Don’t be lethargic before a presentation. Get the blood pumping, because that energy will transfer. Create those habits - Combine all your own tactics to create your habits, your routine, and use it to keep you on top form. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s important that you know your own body, and know what you need’ ‘You’ve got to be fully present, both in mind and body’ ‘Motion creates emotion' ’Normal is what we do, not what we are' VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property Presenting, Pitching And Public Speaking Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Everyone needs public speaking because we all do it every day in different ways and Toni’s tips for public speaking can be used in any situation to help you get your message across and make a connection listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS I am massively passionate about public speaking and believe that everyone needs it in their lives. If you have a message you are depriving people of it if you don’t share it through public speaking. Talk about something you are passionate about or know really well it will be much more interesting for those listening. Every single person has a message inside of them and passion is imperative, what is your mission, your vision, what do you want to achieve? You need a purpose, what value are you going to add? Have a system and follow a process it means you can stay focused and get your point across. The pentagon system is precise, compact and provides the right amount of information for the audience. The pentagon system is part of the Progressive 28 step system; Tell people WHAT it is you’re talking about, start with the end in mind. WHY is it you are talking about what you are talking about? Features – something it provides them Benefits – what it gives them People want to know step by step HOW they can achieve or have something. Identify the possible main concerns, and overcome them WHEN this is a specific date but could be now if you are selling something Know and focus on your audience adapting your speaking to suit your audience. Identify and acknowledge any doubts or concerns and most importantly overcome them during your speech. Practise prepare and practise again, nobody is born a good speaker. It’s a skill to be developed and important for everyone. Start with the end in mind, reverse engineer your speech in small steps. what are the steps you will need to go through to achieve your end goal? Create a great connection and rapport, the way you make your audience feel is based on the connection you make with them. People buy into people and people don’t care unless they know that you care. Record your speeches ready to review. No one’s first speech is their best. If you record all your speeches and listen back to them as part of your process you can effectively review them and improve. Review and document, what worked well? what needs to change? Implement changes for your next speech. Enjoy speaking, when you enjoy it, you want to repeat it, there is no perfect speaker or speech it’s about making an impact. Everyone is unique everyone is different it’s what makes us special. Be you authentically, own everything about you. BEST MOMENTS ‘Everyone needs to be comfortable with it, we do it every day’ ‘We use ‘ums’, ‘errs’ or swear to give ourselves the opportunity to think and using a conscious pause helps you to gather your thoughts’ ‘To get speaking gigs it’s about getting out there and getting your brand known by attending business events’ ‘You can give a huge amount of value in a very short amount of time’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success Progressive Property Rob Moore Mark Homer ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Recently, Toni asked a group of entrepreneurs the question: “Who here uses public speaking within your business? And how?” After studying the responses, it soon became clear that many people regard the art of public speaking as something limited to stages and keynote addresses. But it can be used in many different ways. It’s time to stop pigeon-holing public-speaking, and stop assuming that it’s for stage events only. In this episode, Toni shares ten ways in which you can use your voice and share your message without standing on a stage. KEY TAKEAWAYS Articles and blogs - Writing is an opportunity for you to share your knowledge, to share your insight and your specialist area. The cost of entry is practically zero, and can earn you huge benefits in return. Social media - There are many ways to engage with social media, one of the most effective being video. But written posts can go viral, too. You can get your voice out there without actually getting your voice out there. Write a book - Everyone has a story to tell. Focus on yours and tell it to the world. You can inspire others and leave a lasting legacy all in one hit. Video - Quite often, video posts are more linked to, and opened, by people searching for messages or information. Podcasting - Podcasting is a cheap and effective way of allowing your voice out into the world, whether it’s a show you’re creating, or appearances on other people’s shows. More importantly it fits in to your lifestyle and wherever you live. Email - Promoting a product or service, pitching or simply mailing a list to keep them updated, it’s one more way to reach an audience without being on a stage. Conference calls - You can engage with entire groups of people in one fell swoop by appearing on a conference call. You don’t need to be physically present to talk to an audience. Hosting a webinar - The benefit with a webinar is, again, it can allow you to instantly reach a large audience without being present. The bes part is that a single webinar can be re-used over and over again. Networking events - When you are speaking to a small group of people, even socially, you are a public speaker. You don’t have to be on a stage. You just need to be engaging, even if it’s only one person at a time. Your livestreams on social media - It is an opportunity to not just speak to your audience, but to bond and connect dynamically with people who tune in. BEST MOMENTS ’There are people who make an entire living from creating articles’ ‘You can get your voice out there without getting your voice out there’ ‘Everybody has a story, and people love a hero’s journey’ ‘If you’re on a street corner speaking out loud, then you’re a public speaker' VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘Have you ever heard someone deliver a really good speech where they haven’t been reading from a script or relying heavily on slides and you’ve thought ‘WOW’ The best speeches are those delivered using a tried and tested system with the right dose of information, the perfect balance of emotion and the correct measures humour and content. This episode is an overview of the 28-step speaker system of Unlimited Success. This system has generated in excess of 30 million pounds in speaker sales and will enable any speaker to be able to deliver a seamless presentation, listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Some of the best speeches ever delivered have been scripted or systemised completely and The speaker system of Unlimited Success is your best ally, within the system, there are 7 main parts; The big entrance This is exactly what it says, it’s about beginning as you mean to go on and sets the tone for your speech. You should aim to arrive at the apex of the applause. Earn the honour This is about your authority as a speaker, your right to be there giving the speech. If you are being introduced you need to answer the immediate question in the mind of the audience ‘who are you and ‘why should I listen to you?’ You should then give a summary of your results with humility. Pentagon part 1 This is the ‘what’, ‘why’ and the ‘how’ Story It is where you create emotion by connecting with the audience through your story. Quite often your audience will be you a few years earlier and sharing your story will really connect with them. Pentagon part 2 This is the ‘what if’ and ‘when’ Elegant sales formula This is where you convey your message and make your offer. The close This is where you close your speech answering any questions. Breakout sections The big why – these elements are usually part of your story Focuses on why they should listen to you, why it benefits them, and why they are interested in your content, this fills in the gaps in your audience’s heads to paint a bigger picture. The ‘decoy’ Another breakout session is ‘the decoy’ This is ultimately a bonus offered at the end of the speech. It is introduced early on and is given high value during the speech so that when it is offered as an additional product, desire or need has been generated in your audience. The River The river is the tiny components that are woven together to create a seamless speech and are ever present in your delivery. Such as; The energy you bring and as the speaker how you control the level of energy throughout your speech. The ‘you fixation’, where you include the audience, using ‘you’ in place of ‘I’ this is when you are placing your audience in your speech. Eye contact is imperative connecting you to each and every person in the room it makes people think you are speaking to them individually. The 6 ‘C’s - Charisma, conviction, connection, content, concern, contact All play a part and should be elegantly woven into your speech ever-present throughout the complete presentation. When you learn and practice using this system, you will be the person who is delivering the effortless ‘WOW’ speech BEST MOMENTS ‘This system has been designed to incorporate all the most important elements of a good speech’ ‘It’s vital to ensure you achieve the right balance on arriving’ ‘There are so many things that are ever present in a successful speech, an elegant bridge allows your speech to flow linking sections together seamlessly’ ‘Your story creates the connection; the audience will connect with the emotion you are conveying, and this results in a stronger rapport between you and the audience VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast Unlimited Success ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. In this very special episode, Toni talks to guest Scott Hughes, a presenter on Radio City, who shares his invaluable insights on how best to create a sense of intimacy with listeners, how to sense when public speaking is working successfully, and some of the secrets and techniques that Scott has honed through his career in order to grab and hold his audience’s attention. KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s important to realise that the world is changing and evolving. Many from the last generation look with scorn upon the celebrities of today, convinced that their rise to fame has not been earned. But it’s equally as important to remember that with new advances comes new ways to engage, and we must never dismiss the new generations’ means of interacting with fame. Radio is a one-on-one experience, designed and best utilised when the presenter creates an intimacy between themselves and the listener. They can do this by using phrases such as “I don’t know if this has happened to you...”, or “Have you ever done this...?” Silence can be a very effective way of arresting your audience’s attention. A well-placed silence allows for an audience reaction and can strengthen the rapport between speaker and listener. Sometimes an early laugh from your audience can disarm your critics and help to create a sense of comfort for you as a speaker. John is a firm believer in forcing himself out of his comfort zone. Sometimes it can be constructive to agree to things before we are sure if we can do them or not. By agreeing and then working out how we’ll accomplish the task, we force ourselves to think laterally, and thereby increase our skill-set. If you are ever overcome with nerves, keep your head up. Always look at your audience. Don’t look down at the floor, as it makes you look nervous. BEST MOMENTS “You had to be famous for doing something. Nowadays you become famous for being famous” “There is so much power in a pause” “It’s the fight or flight thing” “Fake it till you make it” “People like to watch someone who appears confident” “No one wants to see you fail - Everyone wants to see you succeed” “Follow your dreams, be confident. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” – Dr Seuss Sometimes, what we dread about ourselves are the parts of us that actually makes us ‘US’ and what makes us different from others. But how do we turn them around so we make them instead of our strength? Our ultimate brand to be the best speaker or presenter? In this episode, Toni speaks about the beauty of highlighting that thing that’s unique in you. No need to be just like the others. You’re meant to be different; you’re meant to stand out! So, it’s time to figure out today with Toni what within you could make you one of the best speakers in this day and age! KEY TAKEAWAYS What makes you different should not be stifled but rather be highlighted. It’s what separates and makes you stand out from the rest. Use it to your advantage. Make it your personal brand. Understand your body language, your speech patterns, your accent, your fashion or anything that makes you different. See how you can emphasize them and make them memorable when you are on stage. Look for the best speakers who you can mimic or learn from. One of the unique speakers that you should be observing is Eric Thomas. Eric Thomas not just plainly narrates his past experiences, but rather prefers shouting them enthusiastically. Another one is Eric Wahl whose an American graffiti artist and a motivational speaker. He creates paintings while delivering speeches. Don’t try anything that is not really in your character and you’re not happy with. And, more importantly, don’t change anything in you that could possibly help you achieve success. Take a risk. There will be times that it won’t work out, but once it does, the sky’s the limits. It’ll be easier to move forward to attain your goals. BEST MOMENTS “Be different, be authentically unique, and most of all, be you.” “Who wants to be a boring speaker who looks at their screen watching their presentation, reading their own PowerPoint presentation?” “You need to be a character so stand up and stand out.” “You got to be true to yourself, you got to encourage your own traits, you got to emphasise who you are, and don’t apologise for who you are.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘Your authority is created by sharing with people why you have the right to be the person delivering the speech or presentation’ In this fascinating episode, Toni explains how to effectively establish your authority when speaking. She shares the psychology that underpins authority and how to get out of your own way to achieve successful and engaging speeches and presentations. This is an invaluable listen for anyone who has a message or information to share with an audience. KEY TAKEAWAYS Your authority as a speaker comes from your psychology in speaking. Everyone experiences the voice your head, which questions what you are doing and your right to be doing it. If you allow the voice in your head to stop you in public speaking because you have a lower level of self-worth or you have authority fears around it you are never going to get to where you want to be. To develop any new skill, you take learning from an expert in their field and then put it into practice. You learn it, you practise it, you master it. To master the psychology, focus on the positive, what if it goes really well…. You have a message to share, you have information to tell and people want to hear what you have to say. Within the speaker system at Unlimited Success is the ‘Earn the Honour’ process This is all about the right to speak and earning the status. Why are you the authority? why should your audience listen to you? Your authority is created by sharing with people why you have the right to be the person delivering the speech or presentation. You want people to think ‘why should I be listening to you’ and have that question answered immediately. The smaller individual things create the hook for people to be interested, intrigued and to listen. You are creating a desire for people to listen to the entirety of your speech. BEST MOMENTS ‘Psychology in speaking is imperative’ ‘Authority in speaking is all in your head’ ‘I’m new to public speaking why would anyone listen to me? I just had to get over it and get out of my own way’ ‘If you are talking about something you are passionate about you will create an authority around it’ ‘Your target audience will be just starting out so if you are just one step ahead you are very relatable to those people’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Presenting, Pitching, Public Speaking Podcast The Chimp Paradox book by Prof Steve Peters Unlimited Success ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘By not utilising these third-party testimonials you are missing an opportunity for you, your business and for those providing testimonials for you’ Toni takes an in-depth look at testimonials and their importance in building your business. She explores the various types of testimonials explains in detail the most powerful format for any testimonial. If you want to make sure you have awesome testimonials for your business listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS We’ve all had recommendations in the past and they are very powerful in helping you to make decisions. It is important to remember that bad news travels faster than good news so whatever your product or service it has to be good. Testimonial information can be shared in a variety of ways but when you are sharing past examples from clients or their comments it’s important that you have permission. If you have an email thanking you, commenting on how great your presentation was and confirming a future booking then this can be used. It showcases that your client was very happy with the service provided and that they are booking you again. You can also have video testimonials, if a client is prepared to explain what you and your service or product has achieved for them then this is an extremely powerful way to promote yourself and your brand further. Testimonials can be arranged or ideally are put forward by the client. There is nothing wrong with asking clients for testimonials, good business builds a business. If you are aiming to build or fast track your business you need to give it a helping hand through testimonials. If you do it well enough you’ll have people fighting to leave you their success stories because success leaves clues. If people who are getting success because of your product or service and you promote them, through a testimonial then others will also become interested in taking part. You don’t just ask for a testimonial not everyone knows the right format to use. You should coach your clients when they are doing a testimonial for you to ensure the testimonial is specific and beneficial to both you and them. The then, now, how, action model is effective for testimonials across a range of formats ‘The then’ This part focuses on what it was like for them before they encountered working with you. It usually identifies a pain point in some form. These will be points that other people will identify with. ‘The now’ This where they are now following working with you or using your product. The now is the results, the success achieved. There will be a big gulf between ‘the then’ and ‘the now’ it is the sharing of success. ‘The how’ People want to know how they can replicate those results. How did you do it?, how can I do it?’ The how’ will be a system, formula or profile that can be followed. ‘The action’ This is the call to action. It’s what people need to do to achieve the same result. The more visual it is the better the results. An image is very powerful, it could be in the form of a screenshot to show results or a picture of the before and after. If the testimonial is visual, detailed and includes results it will have powerful Video testimonials - The video format is powerful because it allows people viewing to see the positive facial expressions of those giving the testimonial. Live testimonials - The best testimonials of all are live testimonials where people are in the room with you to share their results and available for your audience members to meet and ask questions. This is beneficial to you, your credibility and your audience who can interact with the individual. It is also beneficial to the person providing the testimonial as they can promote themselves and their business You should try to use a mix of testimonial types and remember to ask all of those people who thank you to provide a specific testimonial that uses the then, now, how, action model. BEST MOMENTS ‘Facts tell but stories sell’ ‘We’ve all had recommendations in the past and they are very powerful in helping you to make decisions’ ‘It is important to remember that bad news travels faster than good news so whatever your product or service it has to be good’ ‘Bad news travels fast, good news takes the scenic route’ ‘It's important that we give our good news a helping hand and support it on its way’ ‘You can share testimonials verbally, one to one or in a staged delivery when you are speaking’ ‘It creates scarcity as people know you are being booked again so your time is limited’ ‘It has additional elements’ ‘People will often send messages thanking you but how often do you go back and use them as the basis for a testimonial’ ‘I was taught early on to keep a file of all the results people shared with me’ ‘It’s a great confidence boost, we all have down days’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/presenting-pitching-public-speaking/id1435146863?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. ‘Surround yourself with the right people because one thing leads to another’ In this episode, David is in discussion with Toni Gargan, who with her partner has built a lucrative property portfolio and developed a successful career as a public speaker. Toni shares her journey and the importance of having the right support to secure rapid growth for your property portfolio. If you are wondering about how to begin in property investment then this inspirational podcast will tell you how and why you should get started now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why property? The move to be in property was inspired by my husband’s interest and his drive to be his own boss. He was also looking for a way to leave a job he was unhappy working in. We undertook some property training and realised that you can do it with the right knowledge and help. We began by spending a minimum of 10 hours a week researching property. Why did you choose progressive property? We had been to a different training company previously and although the training was good there was no support network available and this put things on hold. We continued our research and learning through webinars and listened to a podcast by Rob Moore that was about network and support. This made us realise that it was possible to begin a property journey with the right support network and opportunities to continue learning. We attended a one-day event and it changed everything. It was suggested that speaking at property events might be something I could do. It really interested me and was a possible income stream but we needed to have a property portfolio so that people would buy into us as people. Where are you now? Now I deliver for lots of training across a range of events for Progressive Property. The passive income from our property portfolio gives me the opportunity to pursue my career as a public speaker. I deliver different training around joint venture finance, property and public speaking and I totally love what I do. What skills have you developed as a speaker? I get a huge buzz from speaking but it also helps with property and getting good deals. It has helped me to raise finance as I am often approached by possible joint venture partners when I speak at property events. How important is the VIP community group? When I initially walked into the room and everyone was networking, it felt overwhelming but I soon realised the atmosphere was full of energy and positivity. People opened the group up to let you listen or speak and to be a part of it, I’d never experienced anything like that before. Where are you now in your property journey? I was frustrated as we were finding deals but were then unable to act because we didn’t have the money. My mentor highlighted the choice I was facing ‘100% of nothing or 50% of something through a joint venture’ It was a moment of change when I realised joint venturing was a positive solution to the challenges we were facing. The relationships we had built with various agents and knowing what we could purchase a property for, was the catalyst for developing property packaging, it was missed money not to package them. Currently, we have moved into working with blocks of apartments and are in the position where following the refurbishment there are multiple possible exit options. BEST MOMENTS ‘A big part of it was being part of the community’ ‘A massive part of it was having help from other people’ ‘I’m like a dog with a bone if someone sets me a challenge its ‘watch me do it’ 'No one is going to buy into us unless we have a property portfolio' ‘Because of my property investments, all my basic needs and costs are covered’ ‘You don’t think you are ever going to be there you're seeing all these great things’ ‘You’re finding these great deals and what are you doing with them’ ‘I’d missed out on so much money waiting to raise finance’ ‘Following the system with intelligence and energy’ ‘Holding the asset is what makes you wealthy over time’ ‘Start with the end in mind, sit down and work out what might happen for any eventuality’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.progressiveproperty.co.uk/ https://unlimited-success.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/progressivepropertycommunity/ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/property-sourcing-profits-podcast/id1384873667?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST David is a property expert with over 25 years’ experience and his own portfolio of 26 units. Everyone can be a good public speaker. Even Steve Jobs was supremely nervous at one of his first television interviews. In this episode, Toni Gargan goes through her top ten tips to ensure that you are an amazing public speaker. From getting out of your own way, following a system for your speech and enjoying the journey, Toni give you the best top tips to improve your public speaking. If you have a big speech coming up, or would like to improve your public speaking today this is the podcast for you. Key Takeaways Some of the best speeches in history have come from the most unlikely of people. If you think you can do it then you able to do it. You have to change your mindset and get out of your own way. Anything is possible if you get out of your own way. Even Steve Jobs was supremely nervous in his first live television interview but then skip forward to 2017, he is a polished public speaker. This is due to practice. These are top ten tips for improving your public speaking? Speak about something that you are passionate about. Something that you are an expert on. Your journey, your knowledge, or your life experiences whatever it is. It doesn't matter what you speak about only that you know it well and that you are confident in it. Know why you're doing it. It's really important that you have a purpose for your speech. Maybe it’s a requirement, maybe you have to sell something new, or a Facebook live video. You should ask yourself two questions: What is the purpose of my speech? and What value will I add to my audience? If you nail both of these things then you can’t go wrong. Follow a system for your speech. We use the pentagon model here. This includes six questions with differing percentages: 1) What is it that you are talking of? (5%) 2) Why? (30% of your speech) 3) Why that subject matter, and what benefits there are to the audience? 4) How (40%) this is the biggest section, the information bit but make sure it’s entertaining and intriguing. 5) What if? (15%) around the fears, concerns and how to overcome concerns as to why people should listen to you. 6) When? Is it a specific date of the speech or a future date. Know your audience. Focus your speech to those that will be listening. Even if the content is the same for your speech it needs to be angled to your audience. It needs to be fit for purpose for your audience, making it fun, entertaining almost a game. Practice, Prepare and Practice again. Have key points that you want to cover noted down. Prepare alone, in front of your peers, and in front of friends. Maybe even record yourself, to identify what you can do better, or what you do well. Start with the end in mind. Visualise how confident you will be, what the audience reaction will be at the end of the speech, the nodding of heads, engagement with your workshops. The previous five in the list are about the leg-work but it’s really important to visualise your success to be successful. Create the connection. Make your story connect with your audience. You could be one of many speeches that your audience has heard all day. You need to stand out and make the audience connect with you. You need that connection for them to buy into the information and/or product or service. Your focus is on adding value to the audience. Record Your Live Speeches. When you give the speech to a live environment, it is making sure it’s recorded. You can identify what has been successful and where you can improve as well as the audience's reactions. Even just an audio version. It’s important to note what worked really well. Write down at the end of each speech what worked, and what you would change afterwards. At the earliest opportunity when it is fresh in your mind as to what worked well and can be improved on. You can forget very quickly later in the day if you don’t write them down straight away. Enjoy it. Enjoy your speech, don’t focus on just getting through it, make sure you enjoy the connection with the audience, and focus on the benefits to the audience. Best Moments ‘Absolutely anyone can be a public speaker.’ ‘You set your own limits.’ ‘No-one is born natural born speakers, they all practice.’ ‘What you talk about doesn’t matter as your confidence’ ‘It's important that you have a purpose to your speech,’ ‘Audience members will ask what’s in it for me?’ ‘Focus your speech on your audience, the benefits to them.’ ‘Practice, prepare and practice again.’ ‘Think about your net-time to practice; driving in the car.’ ‘People buy into people.’ ‘Your friends and family will either go really positive or hyper-negative.’ ‘Practice in private to present in public.’ ‘The objective for each speech is to be better than the last one.’ ‘Make small incremental changes, every time you practice a speech.’ ‘If you enjoy it then your audience will enjoy it even more.’ ‘The best speakers show confidence, charisma and a connection with the audience.’ Valuable Resources Steve Jobs 1978 Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb9YTXmPolo. I didn’t think I would get on but being in the final six is amazing. I applied the year before but missed the email, so getting this far this season is a great feeling. Do You Care About What Other People Say About You? I don’t care about what other people say about me if they are going to be hateful. I used to care a lot about what other people say but the more I networked and met with like-minded people I cared less and less. My sister would get affected the most but I think there has been a turning point where the positivity outweighs the negative recently. Did You Have To Do A Pitch When You First Applied To The Apprentice? Your first round of interviews is your elevator pitch in the application process. I got a lot of positive feedback from that. There are lots of different interviews through the process and being ‘real’ was really essential in the process. How Does The New Found Fame Feel? I love people, so meeting everyone is great. So many people came up to me asking for a selfie but not yet an autograph. I’m grateful for the new found fame because I think people really want to change their lives and I want to help them do that through business. I’m grateful for the new found platform. How Difficult Was It Being Away From Your Kids? It was really difficult. Being in the Apprentice is difficult because of the annoying other people in the show but also because you are away from your kids for up to two months. It’s annoying in business you have to be one thing or another: parent or businesswoman. I want to make it easier to fit being a parent and a business person together. Do You Think The Apprentice Is A True Representation Of You? Yeah because I have a good heart but I am feisty. All entrepreneurs have an element of aggression or assertiveness about them. It’s not an insult because I think it’s passionate. Do You Believe That The Skills You’ve Learnt In Presenting Yourself Well Have Helped Your Career? Definitely, I had my first paid speaking gig recently and I wanted to be authentic so I didn’t have a powerpoint or notes. Eventually, someone is going to like me for who I am. I’m not trying to be very corporate, I’m just a mom who is hustling. What I love about speaking is the feeling you get when students come and speak to you after the speech. Do You Get Nervous? Yeah, you can still hear it in everyone’s voice. You have to channel your nerves in the right way. Surely even Beyonce gets nervous before she performs and you have to go onto stage with a fierce alter ego. Get Into The Mindset Of An Employee. I realised that the employees were never going to see the business in the same way as I do. It’s not their business. When your an employee you don’t care about the big picture as much. It can take a while to realise this. In Five Years Time, I would like to be happy, have a nice house. Money is one of the biggest factors of people being down. Running this business has been a financial strain, so having a support system is really important. Best Moments ‘I love business, love sales, and meeting people.’ ‘Focus on your own destiny and your own success.’ ‘People are going to judge you anyway.’ ‘I want to see to get the best out of people.’ ‘Trying to make business more open to being a Parent.’ ‘If you need help get the help.’ ‘It’s all about passion.’ ‘Hustle until your haters ask if your hiring.’ ‘If you’re not nervous you're not going to give the best performance.’ ‘People don’t connect with you unless you show your care.’ ‘You need to remember what it was like for you as an employee.’ ‘You don’t always have to keep your errors or insecurities to yourself. Speak to people.’’ ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Welcome back to the Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast. In this episode, Toni takes a deeper dive into audience interaction and shares with you how to litter your presentation with interactions to keep your audience engaged and elicit a response. Toni looks are the different methods of interaction and gives you her top tips to interacting both verbally and non-verbally. Listen to the previous episode here: #010 Speaker Interaction KEY TAKEAWAYS Use sporadically throughout your delivery - Don’t allow interaction to become the focal point of your delivery. Simply allow yourself to litter interaction with your audience throughout your speech. Don’t make it too top or end heavy. It’s got to be relevant - Always consider the context of your interactions during your delivery and how that impacts on your content. Keep it relevant. Vary your responsiveness - Bring in and engage every type of listener with varied responses when interacting. Incorporate all of the different learner types by varying your responses. Lead by example - If you are asking people to raise their hand you need to lead by example. This will help to elicit a response and allow you to keep them engaged. Eye contact, smiling and your body language - These are all fabulous, non-verbal ways to interact with your audience and break down barriers. How To Interact With Questions Questioning within the room. - This can be one-to-one or one-many. Ask questions to groups within the room - Crowdsource your answers, get hand-raisers or ask them to shout out the answer. Ask your audience to write down their answers on a piece of paper - This is a non-verbal interaction but gets your audience thinkings and keeps them engaged. - There are two different forms of questions. Open and closed and you can use the T.E.D model to ask them. T: - Tell me. E: - Explain. D: - Describe - A great way to ask closed questions and gain audience interaction is to ‘Tag’ the answer on to the end of your statement. For example, Public speaking is a great way to grow your business, yes or no? the audience will answer yes or no. There’s verbal and non-verbal interaction you can employ to keep your audience engaged. It’s your responsibility as the speaker to identify how much of each type of interaction to deliver. It’s also your responsibility to ensure the environment is right within the room. Along with everything else you need to monitor the room to ensure it doesn’t detract away from the delivery of your presentation. BEST MOMENTS “If you’re doing a 30-second elevator pitch you might not use or need any interaction in your delivery. But if you’re delivering a half-day training session or an hour and a half presentation you’ll want to include interaction in your delivery.” “Always ensure your delivery is consistent but tailored to your specific audience.” “The amount of interaction you’ll look to use will depend upon the duration of your speech or presentation” “Bear in mind the context and content of your interactions” VALUABLE RESOURCES #010 Speaker Interaction ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. In this episode of the Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast Toni focuses on interaction in your speeches. It is your role when you are presenting or speaking in public to get your audience involved, to keep engagement and to ensure that they feel the part of your delivery. You sit in someone’s presentation or delivery, you don’t want it to sound like a monologue. You would want to avoid that type of presentation or speaking. So, what do you do? Toni shows you how you can avoid a low energy room environment and make sure that your audience understands and enjoy your speech or presentation every time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Responsibility. As a public speaker, it is your duty to gauge the room and see what the energy is like within the room. It is your responsibility to elevate it when it needs to be elevated and to really calm the energy down when the energy is a bit loud or rude. You have the ability to do that when you are presenting. Start with the end in mind. What information do you want to elicit from your audience? Are you trying to get a response from them? Or are you trying to get them to come on board a thought process which may be yours or somebody else’s? Think about what emotion you are trying to evoke. What information are you trying to elicit? Are you to get the audience to do something? You need to know from the start what kind of response it is that you're trying to evoke on with that in mind that would determine the amount of interaction you have within your speeches. Networking breaks. Raise the energy in the room if you feel that it is on the low mode. Networking breaks is a good exercise for when people don’t necessarily know one another. Before you do this, make sure that you set the rules ahead of time, especially if the audience is as large as 400 people. You might not be able to control it if you don’t set the rules ahead of time. Example, you tell them, I’d like you to meet 3 people that you don’t know yet in the next three minutes. This will lift the energy of the room as they have to do something physical. Brainstorming. So you set the tone from the start. Identify what you're hoping for and then just to be clear, we can ask for some shares. From the root, it becomes a group exercise. Everyone can get up on their feet. And people getting involved to get up on their feet and brainstorm, and you get people's brains into action which means they're going to remain engaged and interested. Even if they're the type of people who maybe aren't very comfortable and shout out loud to the room, maybe not the type of people who are the first to raise their hand, it could be someone quite shy, this gives everyone the ability to talk to one another and to get their voice heard. Debrief. We’ll ask for some shares. How did people feel like what went? People who would like to speak up will have the opportunity to speak and to stand out. Others who are quieter can speak within the group. So example, you have requested some information from your group, you’ve identified that you’re looking for a particular response, and you’ve given information. Now, you are looking for people to feedback to you. Debriefs are a perfect way to do this. Rob Moore’s favourite thing to do is to swap his audience seats. Everyone who is sat at the front of the room moves to the back of the room and vice versa. There will be energy, and it gets people talking. Raise the energy of the room. Get the people to do something physical. Let them move about. Walk around. Or let them do role plays. BEST MOMENTS “Delivering your speech is to be aware of the energy within the room and people's interest in regards to what you're saying. It's your responsibility to ensure that you care for your audience to have the best experience and to ensure that you're not allowing your audience also to drain your energy.” “Identify it that you want to do some speaker interaction because you want people to have the best experience you want people to remember.” “Using your speaker interaction, so people know what's expected of them, but they're not just sitting there, not there to listen to what you've got to say that they're working. They’re gonna get involved. They're gonna get motivated and really help you to make the best day for them” ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Pitching is in every area of our lives and if you’re unable to pitch successfully it will be harder to sell your product or service and get people to believe in you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Whether you’re pitching for a job, finance or even a date. Nobody is born a great salesperson, these skills are learnt. Anybody can become a good salesperson by learning the right skills and implementing them in the correct way. As a salesperson, you need to create the closure for your customer and answer all of the questions in the pentagon model so that your customers or clients have all of their questions answered and therefore trust you and what you’re saying. The Incompletion Model - People want to know more and you can then create the cognitive closure. Create a desire for your product or service so that customers want to know more. Seeding - Referencing your product or service and creating intrigued so that your customers ask you questions. Solution Based Selling - Providing a solution to your customer's problems. Answering their fear, worry or doubt with your product or service. Pentagon Model - What? Why? How? What if? When? BEST MOMENTS We are all pitching in some format, all of the time. We are all selling all of the time. Pitching and sales will only work when you’re truly selling a product you believe in. There’s competition in all areas of life and as a result, you’re always pitching, trying to get your point across. Toni explains the VAKAD modalities that you can use to ensure everyone in your room listens and learns in the best possible way. Hear how you can adapt your presenting technique to ensure you cover all the predominant learning styles and create an engaging presentation for your audience. Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic and Auditory Digital. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eye Contact - Attempt to make eye contact with everyone in the room. Today in Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni interviews Paul Smith. After a meteoric rise to fame within the world of comedy, Paul is now the resident host and compere at Hot Water Comedy club in Liverpool, and in today’s episode, Paul shares with Toni, in his own humble way how he went from not really wanting to be a famous comedian to having over 170,000 followers on Facebook and heading up one of the UK’s hottest comedy tours. KEY TAKEAWAYS Did you always want to be a comedian? No. When did you found out you’re funny? About 6 months ago. How long have you been doing this? He has been doing this for 12 years. How difficult was it? Knowing that you were so kind of so far into it…? How hard was it to push through and carry on? Very hard. Looking back in retrospect, it was a good thing. About a year in, he got really lucky. Lucky because he got an opportunity to be on BBC. It takes a lot of time to become a good comedian. Other people rush. He took a whole year off. How did he get back? He took it back to basics. He went to the gym. He got booked and forgot to cancel it. He needed to do the gig. He got drunk. He did the gig. He was placed on last. He did it, and it worked. There was no pressure on it. He got 4 more and host more of it. It keeps coming up. How do you kind of create your content? Cause you are renowned for spending the time just talking to the audience. He never writes anything. It does not work for him. But he does have material though. The way he thinks to best describe it is we all kind of do stand up from time to time. Small talk, stock things and those stories have been exaggerated. To the point that that exaggeration has become more real than the reality. That’s all stand up is really. Do you believe anyone is born a naturally funny person? Paul thinks there are different types of humour. He thinks a lot of people who are funny in life aren’t funny on stage. If you get Paul in a group of people, he is not the funniest person. You need to make sure that everybody is engaged. Paul is very in tuned with the room. He can feel it. When Paul feels down and angry, he’ll find a music that matches what he feels now. It works for him. He finds it very useful. Do you have a set routine before you go on stage? He does not particularly. But he has a stupid superstition. Like how many magpies he sees. How do you deal with hecklers? Paul thinks the best way to deal with hecklers is you have got to have authority in the room. You have got to give the rules, and you have got to keep them in check. If you are going to go out and banter with the crowd, “if you are going to treat them like a c**t, let them be a c**t first” – Chris Cairns. If you try and banter and they say something funny, do not try and beat it. Just go with. The point is having the people laughing. If there is somebody is being a prick, it is not hard to beat them. Most of the time, you are going to be fine. Every time you go on stage, do you still get nervous? Yes, every single gig Paul gets nervous still. Best piece of advice. Comedy. In order to be a healthy comedian, you can’t beat yourself up about a bad gig after 9 am the next morning. And you can’t congratulate yourself it was a good gig after 9 am the next morning. Life Advice. Eat Kale. Worst piece of advice. Become an accountant. Comedy. Try and really just follow the industry and hope that they pick you out as one of the people they choose to be successful. It gives other people power over what you want. The best advice he can give. Do not rush. Just try to enjoy it. If you are not a comedian, what else would you do? A primary school teacher or a barber. BEST MOMENTS “300 people is better than 3.” “You can feel people in the room.” “You can get genuine feedback even when you can’t see them. There’s some subconscious communication there. You can feel the tension. You can feel if they like you. You can feel if they’re attentive. You can feel if they’re slipping away, part of the room slipping away the more you do it. So, you’ll know to direct yourself towards them.” “I would use things that happened in my life. So I try and find something, so I mean, it's a bit of a magic trick…” “You’re brain is only capable of understanding a certain set of information at once. So, we’re all in this kind of trans focus state. The brain is like 120 bits per second, which like 2 conversations.” “Pity is the worst emotion that you can get in a crowd. Hate is much better than pity. You can win a hate back. And get a laugh from hate.” “Try and be happy is the main thing. If you so focus on your career that you’re forgetting to be happy, then you’re probably doing it wrong. And you’re probably never gonna get what you want because as I said earlier on, I think the thing that allows me to be good is the fact that there’s no pressure. I just came back and I do it because I enjoy it.” Standup comedy is not for everybody. You may be good at comedy in real life but it would not be the case on stage. Learn the easiest model you could follow in making the content for your presentation, pitch, or speech! In this episode of Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni dives into the Pentagon Model for Public Speaking. This model concentrates on the 5 key elements (just like a pentagon having 5 sides and 5 vertices!) you should be taking note of when making a speech. Discover these 5 key elements and how important is each to ensure the seamless flow of your content. The Pentagon Model is one of the main sections out of the 28-Step System to Public Speaking that Rob Moore and Mark Homer used up to this day. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pentagon Model – one of the main steps of the public speaking system. Each point of the pentagon represents the key element of your talk. What – What is your speech about? Make it clear to be well-received and understood. This is the 5% content of your speech – it can be an elevator sales pitch, a quick summary, or a title. Why – Why do they need it? Take in mind the acronym WIFM – What’s in it for me? – that is what people care about. Explain to them not just the features but also the benefits. This accounts for 30% of your speech. How – 40% of your speech – the biggest portion. People want to know how they can achieve the same results as you got. What if – You’ll never please everyone. Identify the main objections. You’ll know how to overcome them. This is the 15% of your speech. When – When can they achieve their goal? They need to know when they could get it. if it’s a product, they need to know when could they buy it. It should be the 10% content of your speech. The pentagon method creates a seamless flow of content. Aside from using it in public speaking, you can also use it for written formats. The receiver will never ever get lost while taking the content. It makes the content memorable and valuable. What if you’re afraid of public speaking? Fear is okay and absolutely normal. It will motivate you to work harder. Look at what you will be missing out if you don’t do it – bigger business, larger audience, or more freedom. “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.” – Mark Twain BEST MOMENTS “Why do we need to use the pentagon? It creates a seamless flow of content.” “What the pentagon does – it builds a need and desire for whatever you’re speaking about, whether it’s your passion and hobby that you want people to join with or whatever products and services you’re offering." You’ve got the high-quality content, you’ve written it out, but still don’t have the idea how to properly deliver the speech? In public speaking, there is energy, movement, and tonality that you should start practising on. Today in Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni tells how important are these three elements when delivering a speech. They create the stimulating atmosphere inside the room and connect you to your audience better. Learn how to control the highs & lows, the ebbs & flows, and the peaks & troughs of your voice. The power of your voice and movement can change the energy, the emotions and the mood of your audience. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you move a lot, your energy is high, your tone is high. And this generates an invigorating voice in the room. If you want to lower your tone, stay in one place or sit on a stool while speaking. It can be used to emphasize a point. You can use it to lower your energy or rest for a while. If it’s a small room, make it a participative environment. Get a response by hand-raising or by letting them answer yes-or-no questions. If it’s a big room, divide them into groups. Let them share stories and knowledge with one another. In this way, the energy in the room also raises. If you get distracted by a few audience members because they may be talking, checking their phone, or sleeping, don’t focus on them. Focus on the rest of your audience who actually has an interest in your content. If there is low energy inside the room, use power exercises, icebreakers, or games to energize them up. We all have a default energy and tone. It can be quiet, measured, or loud BUT it doesn’t matter. What matters is how to own it and emphasize it in a room. Congruence and Confidence. Create the energy, movement, and tonality needed to make an interesting speech. When it’s an exciting part of the speech, increase your tone, pace, energy. The rollercoaster of speed, energy, and emotions can be noticed by your audience. BEST MOMENTS “It’s important that your participants are having fun and are engaged throughout your speech. You can determine this through your own energy.” “Don’t prejudge the room and get the incorrect perception." “You determine the energy in the room. You have the power to increase it or decrease it.” “Not just the visible energy, but the invisible energy can be noticed as well.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property Rob Moore Mark Homer ABOUT THE HOST Toni Gargan is a Double World Record-holding Public Speaker, Mentor, Entrepreneur, and Professional Property Investor. Speeches don’t have to be deadpan serious! One of the keys to making it memorable for the speaker and the receiver during public speaking is to have fun by incorporating humour. In this episode of Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni lays out effective strategies on how to add jokes, one-liners, self-deprecating humour, anecdotes and many more to your speech. It’s a skill you have to learn since timing and delivery play important roles in making your audience laugh. Discover also why it’s important to understand your natural default energy when delivering a speech and to take note how serious or light is the content of your speech to know how to add in the humour. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jokes, one-liners and self-deprecating humour. Comedians use this. It’s not for everyone, but it invites a good laugh from the audience. But you shouldn’t undermine yourself and add up a lot of humour especially if it is content-driven or educational speech. Time is the absolute key. Jokes and one-liners are all about the delivery and timing. Using catchphrases once to thrice in your speech can add that depth and a little humor to your content. And, also it diffuses the pressure in the environment. Make sure that you’re comfortable for you to say the jokes you’ll incorporate. Just like we learned last time, you can model your speech from someone BUT always make your personality stand out. If there’s an unforeseen event (e.g. delayed schedule, tech issues, etc.) that happened during your speech, make use of it. Tell a joke about it.
