We listen to songs all the time and think we know what they're about. But do we really? Mick and The Phatman look at songs that have hidden meanings, or it's not clear what they're about or, to quote The Princess Bride, “I don't think it means what you think it means”.Our “Before You Die” album is “Cosmo's Factory” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, an album loaded with hits, and talk about why Creedence were (and are still) such a huge band. We also look at the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performing “Tubular Bells”, with Brian Blessed's booming voice announcing, “2 slightly distorted guitars”!Meanings PlaylistReferences: Rick Wakeman, Six Wives Of Henry VIII, 1001 Albums You Must Hear before You Die. “Jazz: Now & Then” Noel Paul Stookey became a household name as the Paul part of the Peter Paul and Mary equation. The landmark folk trio formed in New York in the '60s and went on to lead the American folk music revival with massive hits like If I Had A Hammer, Puff The Magic Dragon, and Leaving On A Jet Plane. Hammer, of course was written by Pete Seeger and Jet Plane John Denver, but that was the thing about Peter Paul and Mary—they were incredible interpreters of American song. Their readings of Dylan tracks like Blowin' in the Wind, and the Times They Are A Changin' are further evidence that they could not only interpret but in many ways make those songs their own in the process. Peter Paul and Mary put out nearly twenty albums in their career, including 2003's In These Times and the band ceased to be when Mary Travers passed away in 2009. As for Stookey, he remains a pretty active guy both in and out of music. From founding the non-profit Music To Life with his daughter to producing artists like Dave Mallet and Gordon Bok to playing at Dartmouth in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Stookey is still out there, doing the work. And speaking of work, his new album has just hit shelves. Titled Fazz: Now & Then, the staggering 20-track collection mixes new compositions with folk, jazz, gospel, classical, and world music. It's been germinating in Stookey's head for almost 25 years and it was well worth the wait. Filled with folky precision, poetic finesse and clever wordplay, Fazz: Now & Then is a refreshing blast of musical fusion commandeered by one of the greatest songwriters in American Music. A singer, a father, a husband, an artist and and an activist, Stookey is the real deal. www.noelpaulstookey.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: Email: Editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

So I truly believe that Pears are the most underrated fruit ever. Some of the responses I got to that statement were quite comical. What are your thoughts on the subject? Those of you who truly think that Trump won the election, please provide me with some sort of validity to your claims. I am so confused as to how you think he won. I do however understand that he is still CURRENTLY the president and that there is a specific timeline that needs to be followed - but to think he won the election? NO WAY!

Jacqui Smith and Iain Dale spend much of the podcast discussing Boris Johnson’s deal and the ramifications of the Letwin amendment. Suffice today, there’s not too much agreement this week! They also discuss Dame Louise Ellman’s resignation from the Labour Party and the Rugby World Cup, as well as revealing a bit too much (in Iain’s case) in questions. Smut quota: Low

It was Christmas Eve at the Dragon Café so what better to accompany your Dragon Roast with all the trimmings than a reading of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" from Lois and others, the presentation of an 'Ice Dragon' by Ivan and Julia, Jill Rock telling us about some of the beautiful artworks made by Café patrons in 2012 and looking forward to 2013, and Max's shadow puppet show, all topped off with an instrumental rendition of "Puff The Magic Dragon".

Products of the Mind: A Conversation About the Intersection of Business + Creativity
Welcome to Episode 21 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with musician and activist Peter Yarrow. “I wasn’t about being the center of attention that was so exciting and rewarding. There was a magic going on in the village at the time…This was a crucible of change where in the air was this spirit that something dramatically was changing. Something was going to happen in the world to challenge all the points of view with which we had been handed society’s rules… The sixties was a search for authenticity.” Today we speak with Peter Yarrow, musician, activist, and member of Peter Paul and Mary. It’s always fascinating to learn about how musicians and artists get inspired, and Peter’s story does not miss the mark. Peter takes us back to his childhood as a Jewish New Yorker and the strong cultural influence his mother had on him. From not having money for new clothes, but always having money for arts and culture, Peter takes us back to his first instrument…the recorder, and how his love of folk music stemmed from his mom’s 78 records by musicians such as Paganini, Josh White, and Burl Ives. Peter tells us about teaching English as an undergrad at Cornell, and how singing in the classroom helped catapult his love for music and community. Learn about how musical inspirations such as the Everly Brothers, The Weavers, and Pete Seeger influenced the folk group that became Peter, Paul, and Mary. Peter describes the seemingly magical time in 60’s Greenwich Village, a place of musical inspiration and hope social and political change. Peter discusses the role of music and musicians in social activism, and how society attempts to restrict the art of music during times of social upheaval. Hear about how the Red Scare influenced artists and musicians when the threat of communism was at the social and political center stage; and naturally how those musicians fought back. Of course we couldn’t talk with Peter and not ask about Puff the Magic Dragon. What is the song about? What is the inspiration behind the music? Get the answer straight from the source, and so much more on today’s episode. Peter’s Homepage Operation Respect Honorable mentions from this Episode: Shrimp Boats Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts Isaac Stern The Weavers Kisses Sweeter than Wine High School of Music and Art Bob Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind Selma to Montgomery March Weave me the Sunshine The Weavers Banned by NBC (article) Peter’s Don’t Laugh at Me Thanks for Checking Out Products of the Mind! Episode 312 is all that and more! First Adam frags some headlines claiming that adult women gamers outnumber teenage boy gamers. Next Pat hunts for the facts to answer a listener's questions about deer. Lastly Darren clears the smoke on whether Puff The Magic Dragon is about marijuana.
How often do you get to say Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul, and Mary sang me a Valentine's Day Song, and so today I am Peter Yarrow's valentine. America has it's folk music and Peter Yarrow, of Peter Paul and Mary, is right there at the top. They performed at the 1963 March On Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his "I Have A Dream Speech." Never once, did I think I would ever have the opportunity to talk to someone who was actually at that march, that day. (Thank you Peter for sharing in detail what that day looked and felt like. WOW!) Peter, Paul and Mary came up at a time when they were inspired to make music that meant something socially. There was a cause, a purpose, a reason that they were doing what they were doing. It wasn't for "celebrity" like so many chase after today. I believe they recognized that they had a platform and an opportunity to affect social change in a positive way. Who really does that in music today? GaGa is the only one that is at the top of my mind. Peter published Puff The Magic Dragon a few years back, a children's book, but really loved by all. His latest book is "I'm In Love With A Big Blue Frog." In it he touches on prejudice and racial issues, hopefully this story will somehow open those little minds up and allow a new thought to be pushed in. Get the book at your local bookstore and online at amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Im-Love-Big-Blue-Frog/dp/1936140373 Peter's Operation Respect school program: www.OperationRespect.org Peter, Paul & Mary's website: www.PeterPaulandMary.com Peter's facebook: www.facebook.com/Peter-Yarrow Peter, Paul & Mary's facebook: www.facebook.com/PeterPaulandMary
