Drummer Rey Washam (Scratch Acid, Rapeman, Helios Creed, Ministry & more) talks about how amazing Austin was in the 80's, the origins of Scratch Acid; from David Yow asking him o join to hanging out and listening to records to finally recording and touring, The new Touch & Go Scratch Acid Box Set (and remastering process), He and bassist David Sims moving to Chicago and starting Rapeman with Steve Albini, the brutality of recording 2 Nuns & a Pack Mule, Steve Albini's distaste fro drum compression, him joining Ministry for the FilthPig & Dark Side of the Spoon records (and the carrying processes' between them, the intensity of their live shows, his early drums sets, ones that he regrets selling, the 10 year break he took from playing (and the process of re-connecting tot he kit), his favorite recording and the story behind the infamous neck brace pictures! CBB!!

The Model Rapeman/Kim Gordon's Panties Rapeman/Superpussy Rapeman/Steak and Black Onions Rapeman/Inki's Butt Crack Shellac/My Black Ass Shellac/Canada (Peel Sessions) Shellac/Wednesday Shellac/Prayer to God

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a true recording innovator and master of his craft: the amazing Mr. Steve Albini. Our good friend and fellow podcasting brother, Chris L joins us from the awesome Pod Of Thunder podcast. We knew we needed someone who represented the region of the country Steve was from and where he did most of his work; a magical faraway place called Chicagoland. Chris was a musician in the Chicago scene in the 90s when Albini's “production” was soaring, and his recordings were impacting the rock and alternative world hugely. This a tough loss, as Albini's ability to capture the true essence of a real rock n' roll band was second to none.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Steve. The sounds of recorded drums will never be the same!Songs this week include:Bodhisattva – “Broken” from Bodhisattva (1993)Big Black – “Bad Penny” from Songs About Fucking (1987)Urge Overkill – “Lineman” from Wichita Lineman (1987)Pegboy – “Never A Question” from Fore (EP) (1993)Shellac – “My Black Ass” from At Action Park (1994)Spy – “Way Inside” from Spy (2005)Foxy Shazam – “Shoe Box” from GONZO (2014)The Mean Reds – “A Little Truth” from CRC Demo (1996)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
Steve Albini was one of a kind. As a songwriter and musician in his bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac he made aggressive, uncompromising music with biting songs about the darkest side of the human experience. As an audio engineer he recorded pivotal albums for the likes of Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey and worked with thousands of others covering every genre conceivable and changing the sound of modern music forever. He was a small business owner, a poker champion, a husband, a brother and a son. He was opinionated, sarcastic, hilarious and in recent years, self reflective. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at the far too young age of 61, while at work, doing a job that he often compared to a plumbers, a blue collar gig that required dedication, commitment and a tireless work ethic. It just so happened that Steve Albini's daily grind changed all of our lives. RIP Mr. Albini, you will be missed. This week we're discussing every album by Rapeman. These guys were a noise rock supergroup made up of Steve Albini on guitar/vocals (Big Black, Shellac), David Wm. Sims on bass (Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard), and Rey Washam on drums (Big Boys, Scratch Acid, Ministry). Rapeman took the buzz saw noisiness of Big Black and coupled it with one of the most incredible rhythm sections in all of rock. A power trio that sounded ten times bigger than they actually were. While they are the most obscure out of all of Steve Albini's projects, their brutal lyrics and provocative band name landed them in trouble just as much as you'd expect. Steve Albini (born July 22, 1961) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders and PJ Harvey. Albini is also known for his outspoken views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound, as well as the flaws in the digital recording process and the superiority of analog technology. Albini's engineering skills have been celebrated for their sense of space, naturalistic tone, and the power of his guitar and drum sounds; his own guitar work is as imaginatively abrasive as his lyrics, which can be challenging and sometimes confrontational. Nearly alone among well-known producers and musicians, Albini refuses to take ongoing royalties from album sales, feeling that a producer's job is to record the music to the band's desires, and that paying producers as if they had contributed artistically to an album is unethical. In this episode, part two of a series of two, all songs selected by Steve Albini as guest for Australian TV show Rage, on June 29 2013. ATTT is continuing its visit to the great state of Wisconsin for a chat with drummist and all-around swell fella DJ Hostettler to break down a topic that is near and dear to our hearts. We have to come clean and tell the world that some of our favorite bands did a terrible job coming up with a name. The bands featured in Top Ten Great Bands With Bad Names are a unique bunch. They thrive in spite of names that are sometimes so bad, they keep people from listening to them. Let's face it, if someone told you that you have to listen to Garbage, does it really sound like a fun time? Anyway, we had a blast reminiscing about the terribly-named bands we've been in over the years and call out some of our favorite bands for dropping the ball in the name department. Steve Albini is regarded as one of the top recording engineers in the world, and has been creating music with his bands Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac, since 1981. As the owner of Electrical Audio in Chicago, Albini has produced thousands of albums and has worked with numerous notable acts such as Nirvana, Bush, The Pixies, The Breeders, Chevelle, PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom, Jawbreaker, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and Cheap Trick.Despite having his name on some of the most memorable indie rock albums ever made, Albini chooses not to collect royalties and instead earns a flat rate for his time, leaving more cash on the table for the artists themselves. As a result, he has been relying on poker to supplement his income for several years. Albini has been competing in a regular low-stakes home game for years that includes several World Series of Poker bracelet winners, including Brandon Shack-Harris, Eric Rodawig, Jason Gola, Matt Ashton, and Matt Grapenthien. Albini has WSOP cashes dating back to 2010, and in 2018, he earned a bracelet of his own, taking down the $1,500 stud event for $105,629.Highlights from this interview include mixed games with Norman Chad, fires so big they make their own weather, The Problem With Music, Go-go with Dave Grohl, balancing time for touring, engineering, and poker, ignoring his day job for Bill Withers, Bush's surprising American success, the stacked game above a bakery, whammy cards, being ethically poorer than he should be, working differently than Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, Jeff Lisandro reads from Matt Ashton, wearing a guitar like a belt, quitting drummers and nude singers, prank calling Gene Simmons for Kurt Cobain, cured bacon, Krakow poker, being 3% gamble, the problem with circular glasses, Fun House by The Stooges, tar targets in concrete bunkers, and the Krispy Kreme donuts at Gwen Stefani's wedding.
Andy Cohen and Tim Midyett of Silkworm and Steve Albini discuss their work together on Silkworm's 1994 album In the West and its 25th anniversary reissue on Comedy Minus One Records! Supported by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts. Please take this listener survey.

The listeners demanded it, so here we are, back for another round of Ghoul Summer just in time to close out the season with three more disgusting and twisted slices of cinematic depravity.Up first, a Chinese film about greedy land developers who kill thousands of snakes while building a luxury apartments only to unleash a curse of snakes that plagues them with piles of serpents at every turn in Calamity of Snakes from 1982.Then, we get the charming tale of a Japanese superhero who is hired to get revenge for his clients by raping their female targets in The Rapeman from 1994, based off the manga and anime of the same name. And finally, we get a grimy glimpse into the life of an embalmer in Columbia as he slices up bodies on a daily basis in the super-ghoulish documentary Orozco the Embalmer from 2001.All this plus discussion on when Halloween season begins, voicemails defending Sweetman's honor, Nerd News, this week's hottest blu-rays, spirited debate about what is satire and so much more!
