This week on Black and Published, Nikesha speaks with Anissa Gray, author of the novel, Life and Other Love Songs. The novel uses music as a metaphor to examine the aftermath of one man's decision on his entire family after they lose the loves of their lives. In our conversation, Anissa discusses how she processed her own personal tragedies on the page. Plus, the reason she says writing Life and Other Love Songs was harder than writing her debut, The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls. And as a journalist by trade with work featured in The Washington Post, CNN, The Cut and Shondaland, Anissa explains the turning point in her life that brought her back to her passion. I met librarian Lauren Regenhardt when I participated in my local “Book Connect” program, and I was thrilled to get a chance to ask so many questions without getting shushed! The Children/YA Librarian told me about how she abandoned her first career for the library and the different types of libraries for different industries. Or, as she puts it, “Libraries in unsuspecting places.” We also talked about why she specializes in Children's/YA books, how a book can ease anxiety and depression, and the delicious perfection of Casey McQuiston's hilarious, sexy, and sweet romance, “Red, White & Royal Blue.” Support the Best Book Ever Podcast on Patreon Follow the Best Book Ever Podcast on Instagram or on the Best Book Ever Website Host: Julie Strauss Website/Instagram Guest: Lauren Regenhardt Podcast/Twitter/Instagram Do you know a young person who'd like to appear on the 2nd Annual Kids/YA Gift Guide Episode? While awareness about eating disorders in America has improved, there's a misconception about who is experiencing them, why they are experiencing them and while we focus on obesity as a national epidemic, anorexia is on the rise. Today we try to better understand eating disorders with our guests, Dr. Christine Peat and author Anissa Gray. The stress of COVID-19 and the isolation of quarantine has increased depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. While we have learned that eating disorders are only partially about body dysmorphia and body image, we also know that they often stem from an attempt to achieve control while in a state of anxiety or uncertainty. Cristina and Dr. Peat discuss the ways in which the pandemic has exacerbated the suffering of people with these disorders, signs we can look out for and ways we can better understand and help the people we love who may be suffering. Next, we'll talk with author Anissa Gray who bravely talks about her own experience with an eating disorder, how that influenced aspects of her book, "The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls" and shares advice for listeners who may be suffering. We'll also hear from listeners who bravely share their experiences with Eating Disorders or challenges. Carolyn and Anita are joined on the podcast by special guest Nicole He, game developer and creative technologist, to take a look at Hulu’s High Fidelity, originally a novel by Nick Hornby, but probably known by most from the 2000 film starring John Cusack as Rob Gordon, a record store owner and obsessive music fan who takes us through his all-time top-five most painful breakups while trying to reunite with his most recent girlfriend. Hulu’s series swaps out this white dude version of Rob for a queer, woman of color played by Zoe Kravitz. Does the new representation in High Fidelity matter? And what happens to the narrative when this swap is applied to a character who epitomized a new kind of toxic masculinity at the start of the 21st century?Time Stamps:1:45 - a little bit about Nicole and how she makes some of the coolest sh*t Anita’s ever seen7:02 - Main Discussion on High Fidelity41:20 - What’s Your Freq Out?Carolyn on Tevin Thompson’s Fortnite essayNicole on women weightliftingAnita on The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa GrayLinks Mentioned:enhance.computerBilly Eilish Gets Interviewed by a Robot - https://youtu.be/K0c94ghBS4Ahttp://tevisthompson.com/its-not-coming-back/Follow Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe on to FFR on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to our Star Trek PodcastTwitterInstagramFollow Nicole:Twitternicole.pizza

We're thrilled to discuss Anissa Gray's new novel, The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls. Told in the alternating perspectives of the Butler sisters, this novel is timely, compelling, and, at times, heartbreaking. We offer pairings and recommendations for the ways that teachers can use this book in their classrooms. After you listen, join us on social media throughout October to participate in our book club discussions. A trio of adult sisters are coming to terms with their very complicated family history. We all experience and remember our family life differently and this book explores some deep and complicated issues that drive us all. Told with sweetness and with searing honesty about some difficult subjects (incarceration, eating disroders and domestic abuse) while at the same time being a gripping read.
Kaytee and Meredith are back in your earbuds this week to bring you Episode 38, including a few literary confessions or demerits. We have a few important announcements right at the top of the show, one of which requires your help, listeners! Send us your Ask Us Anything questions via email, Direct Message, or as a comment on show notes, and we’ll feature them in a future episode! If we use your question, we’ll send you a coveted Currently Reading bookmark (and our everlasting thanks, of course). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: an indie bookstore day recap and a bookish “retirement” gift. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We both read quite a few books that we REALLY loved this week, so don’t hesitate to use those show notes below! For our deep dive this week, we have decided to give ourselves bookish “demerits” a la Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcast. These are places in our reading lives where we think we could improve. Sometimes we commiserate with each other and sometimes we chide each other! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week we are talking about a fantastic mystery/police procedural, and a multi-generational family saga. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Meredith and Kaytee are so excited to finally bring you this very special episode, which we, and our kiddos, have been looking forward to for a long time! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of the hosts: preparing with our sons for the special deep dive in this week’s episode (yep, that’s one bookish moment for the two of us!). Next, we discuss our current reads. Since we wanted to leave time for the kids, we give you only two (and a half) titles each this week, and they are all over the map. Our deep dive this week is a super special interview with Jackson Schwartz, 7, and Micah Cobb, 8. These two boys have big opinions about the books they have read and loved. And the way they relate to each other is downright adorable. Anyone else think this needs to be a regular feature? We are totally smitten. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. There are four (or more) titles in this week’s pressed books segment, so get those Amazon clickers ready! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. This is a departure from our regular day and format! We wanted to get this interview into your ears as soon as possible, so welcome to our first minisode! Today, I’m chatting with debut novelist, Anissa Gray, who just released The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls this week on February 19th. Anissa has been a news journalist for 20 years now, and this is her first foray into fiction. Our conversation centers on that transition, the pressures put onto authors of color, and the ways that reading makes you a better person. You won’t want to miss it! At the end, Anissa presses a book into your hands, because… it’s what we do. Hope you enjoy! . . . . .
