Your Heard Tell Show for Monday, September 11th, is turning down the noise of the news cycle and getting to the information we need to discern our times by talking about not just remembering September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, but considering how to remember, and what we should do about it. Nicholas Thielman of Cato joins Heard Tell to discuss the upcoming debate over the Farm Bill, how the annual legislation plays into this year's budget and shutdown drama, breaking down the different kinds of farms and farmers, and the politics of Big Agriculture. Then, our friend and resident Heard Tell critic Luis Mendez of the Mendez Movie Report returns to talk about the busy summer box office season, talk the big winners like Oppenheimer and Barbie but also some surprising hits and misses, the effects of the writers and SAG strike as we approach awards season, and the uneven year the House of Mouse has had and what it means for not only Disney but other studios/companies still learning the theater/streaming balance. We end on a good note, with a great story of a pilot in California who decided to use mandatory flight hour requirements to rescue and help animals. All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell.Tom Junod: The Faling Man (paywall)https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a48031/the-falling-man-tom-junod/--------------------Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inboxQuestions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? In episode 2, I bring you insight on my dog adoption experience with Geller and Rory, as well as my cat adoption experience with Hudson. Although the adoption process varied for each one of my pets I had no difficulties navigating adoption applications, rescue interviews, house tours and meet & greets. The integration of my rescue dogs and rescue cat was where I struggled most. Between transitioning your rescue pet into your home, introducing your rescue dog to your cat and taking on an alert and nervous rescue dalmatian, my hands were full! Now grab your headphones and listen to me share the top behaviour problems I acquired with each pet and the solutions I found for them. If you're struggling with dog walking like I did with Rory, you have to check out my FREE Mini Course: Walk Your Dog with Confidence where I share the strategies that worked for me.

This week we talk about something we underestimate in our chronic illness lives - pets. We tend to focus on meds, therapies, cannabis, herbs...and anything we can put in or do to our bodies. However, studies after studies are coming out showing the benefits of pets for chronic illness patients. So we're covering a wide range of topics when it comes to pets for chronic illness patients from service and support animals to our regular rescue pets. Many of us in the Spoonie community think the only potential we have for an animal in our lives is if we have a severe chronic illness that requires a service animal--but that simply isn't true. We'll cover this week how it's possible for most of us with chronic illnesses to care for pets, even when our illnesses get bad or finances get tough. We'll also talk about how to find the right kind of pets for your needs, and what rights you have with what kinds of pets. For instance, what rights do you have with a service animal versus a support animal - and what's the difference between those anyhow?? Also, as promised in the episode, we're linking to some major national organizations below that can be helpful in getting you started on your pet-finding journey. However, you should also look locally for adoption efforts and any assistance in pet food banks or vaccination efforts. You can find those below. And in the meantime, while we hug our podcast mascots (Calleigh and Finn want treats, but the vet says hugs are much better for them), you give love to your own pets and service animals. They are all deserving of love and respect for the unconditional love they give to us every day. And we would love, love, love to see your babies in the Facebook group and on Instagram. Let us fawn over them!! This week our special guest is Ilse who explains how her love of the natural world began growing up in South Africa. Now an art therapist on the Sunshine Coast, Ilse shares how she found solace in nature, and learned to appreciate it in all forms ranging from the baboons in her back yard to the stray monkeys that her mother brought home. Our conversation this week explores how this upbringing has influenced Ilse's current lifestyle and we learn about the numerous animals in Isle's life now. I hope you enjoy.
Every year, the number of animals euthanized in the shelter population is equivalent to twice the population of San Francisco.Combine this with the fact that only 3% of all charity donations go to help animals and the environment combined and you can see that there is plenty of work to be done. There is hope, and we can all make a difference. The reality is that the conversation needs to change from helping with people OR animals to people AND animals. The benefits of bringing a rescue dog or cat (or rabbit or horse…) into our lives can be unbelievably powerful. This simple decision has the potential to be truly life-changing.Carol Novello, and her organization Mutual Rescue, collect stories of the transformative effect that rescue animals have been proven to have time and again. And for those of us who don’t have space in our homes for a new furry family member, Carol gives us the language, avenues, and permission needed to support the global pet population in a way that will pay us back and improve the world many times over.Head over to the show notes for all the links discussed and to dive into the world of rescue animals.

Are you a cat person, or a dog person? It's kinda weird that our society makes us choose one or the other. I’m a dog person, but that’s mainly because I only ever had dogs growing up. But this mindset makes me see cats as selfish creatures, bird killers, and unwanted top-of-your-desk sitters. But - maybe I’m wrong. Perhaps I just need to change my tone. So, what shall we do about cats?To find a solution, I phoned the UK to speak with Australian expat, former radio guy, and certified cat fan Lewis McKirdy. Since hanging up the headphones at triple j in late 2016, Lewi has moved to London and has spent time driving an Animal Ambulance for injured cats. Yes, really. And as you might expect from Lewi, our conversation took some surprising turns, including a foray into musical theatre.Lewis McKirdy is on Twitter @lewimckirdy and on Instagram @lewimckirdy. As usual, Doug doesn’t know anything about alcohol so the ladies explain how great margaritas are and the best foods to pair them with! Roger Stone is also in trouble after threatening his judge on instagram, the Michael Jackson estate continues that lawsuit to try and stop HBO from releasing their documentary alleging that Jackson was a child molester and the Syracuse basketball community is in mourning after their coach was involved in an accident that led to another mans death. Jennifer has information from a new study revealing what the biggest problem is currently impacting Millennials, and Victoria wraps the week up with a happy story - a pet shelter in Florida is advertising new volunteer opportunities for people to become snuggle buddies with adorable cats and dogs!

Denver won't join the federal government in a crackdown on illegal immigration. On Monday, the city council passed an ordinance it says will build trust between immigrants and police. Critics, though, say it means Denver's becoming a sanctuary city. Then, Coloradans are headed to Texas to help with animal rescues -- a task that one worker says can save human lives as well. And, a coffee roaster in Pueblo uses power from the sun to finish the beans. Also, a Denver composer traveled to Mongolia to conduct the premiere of a piece he wrote for a musical ensemble there. Plus, Colorado Springs sculptor Senga Nengudi is one of 17 American artists headed to the Venice Biennale. Her work features everyday objects like pantyhose.

We're always talking about how important training is to any successful pet relationship... because, as I'm sure many of you know, training issues are one of the top reasons pets (at leasts dogs and cats) are surrendered to shelters. As I'm sure you also know, training isn't just getting your pets to do what you want, it's a way to communicate with them so they can understand you... and many times the training roles end up getting reversed and our pets start training us! I’m grateful to have this episode of My Rescue Rocks co-hosted by adventurer, fellow rescue advocate, and fellow podcaster Britany Felix! We got so many great responses from all of you and it made for quite a hefty episode, so let’s get right to it, shall we? Here we go! To access links to resources, photos, and more, submitted by other listeners like you, please visit http://myrescuerocks.net/36. Please help us spread our rescue stories by sharing this show with a friend, PAWlease, I’d really appreciate it! To access links to resources and see some photos submitted by our storyteller, please visit http://myrescuerocks.net/34. The Q: What’s your biggest takeaway from becoming a rescue parent? What have you learned? Ever since I was first initiated into the rescue community it's been a non-stop learning experience. I'm so grateful for the many people who've taught me what's going on in the world AND for all the animals I've had the opportunity to meet and work with. I'm really excited to share what you've learned from your experience in the rescue world! I’m also thrilled to be sharing the mic with my season 3 co-host, Britany Felix, from the Living Unconventionally podcast. But before we get to our conversation I just wanted to rewind for a second, because I kind of threw Britany into the show without an explanation, and I totally meant to give you one. If you’ve been listening since the 1st episode you already know that I intended these Q&U episodes to be unedited and “conversational” which I’m saying in air quotes, because I only ever intended to talk to myself in these shows. Of course, I’m actually talking to all of you, but it’s not much of a conversation if you can’t respond to me immediately. It’s also not much a of a conversation if I prepare my answers, and, the truth is that, even though the Q&U episodes were a bit more casual, I was editing the shit out of them. I was reading your comments over and over again, and calculating my responses, and if I sounded awkward I’d just start over and delete the awkwardness… can you guys tell I have a love hate relationship with perfection? I want to be this perfectly real person, but there is no such thing. It’s an oxymoron. The only way for me to stop being so conscious of how imperfect I am is to actually get into a real conversation, plus I figured you guys could use some new stories and a fresh perspective, and what better way to do that then bring on an adventurer who is passionate about the cause? Speaking of which, don’t forget to check out livingunconventionally.com to follow Britany & Brian’s RV adventures; every Friday is the adventure update, and I look forward to hearing this episode most of all each week. So I hope you will enjoy our conversations and appreciate every ah, um, and like we stutter and stumble through… we’re keeping it real.
