When Danielle Viglione was 11, she boldly told her parents that she was going to run a marathon. They compromised on a half-marathon and were surprised when their determined daughter not only finished the 13.1-mile course, but crossed the line in second place. This was just one indicator of the fierce competitor that Danielle was becoming. It became even more apparent when she shattered California state and national basketball scoring records, including several set by the legendary Cheryl Miller. Part of Danielle's scoring prowess came from her embracing the three-pointer long before it became so popular, once hitting the same number of triples in a game as Klay Thompson's NBA record (14). While playing for the University of Texas, Danielle showed that she was equally committed in the classroom, and was named Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Ruthie Bolton is a powerful woman. She is ready to preach. And that should make sense since her father, the late Reverend Linwood Bolton Sr. was a preacher. Her story is truly like no other that I have heard. This preacher's daughter was one of 20 children in her family, including a twin brother and close to 150 nieces and nephews. In a big family, Ruthie found a way to be a shining star.Ruthie tells a story about a fence in the backyard of her Mississippi home. Her victory with the fence is what ignited everything that would come next ... Auburn, Olympics, two gold medals, the WNBA, and becoming a woman who survived domestic abuse and is a voice for all athletes and women. It's inspiring! In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard is honored to be joined by Ruthie Bolton (who now lives in Mississippi). "Her story is amazing and it's understandable why she is one of the most respected players in women's basketball and is a hero to women worldwide." Our conversation hits FOUR areas: Segment ONE  focuses on Ruthie's childhood in Mississippi. She talks about the emergence of her athleticism and her older sister Mae Ola. Then we get two great stories: The FENCE story and The BUS story. Good stuff.Segment TWO turns to life after Auburn and Ruthie's journey to make the National team. Ruthie shares her experiences playing for Hall of Fame Coach Tara Vanderveer. And then Ruthie just simply preaches about life itself. Segment THREE focuses on the Olympics in 1996 when Ruthie got the assignment to shut down one of Brazil's greatest women basketball players Maria Paula Silva. The story then shifts to Ruthie's arrival in the WNBA, the comparison between the WNBA and international play, winding down her playing career, and her last year with the Monarchs.Segment FOUR starts with Ruthie's Hall of Fame induction in 2011. She then shares how ESPN decided to film a documentary that highlighted her basketball career as well as her battle with domestic abuse. Ruthie finishes off with her current projects. Here are some of my favorite HIGHLIGHTS  ...1. The DAD quotes are off the charts. You have to pay attention because there are so many that were all so instrumental in Ruthie's life.2. The FENCE story.3. Shutting down Brazil's best player Maria Paula Silva in the gold medal game4. The 1996 Olympics story Ruthie shares involving the team and a football field. Goosebumps. Our Connection | I met Ruthie Bolton (then Bolton-Holifield) when I was a broadcaster for the Sacramento Monarchs. ENJOY THE TALKING STORY!

In this powerful episode, Layne's dad and sister talk about what it's been like to negotiate Layne's https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/2017/10/05/layne-ingram-gender-transition/699838001/ (very public transition), how they feel about having a Trans child and sibling, and how their family's philosophy to lead with love gets them through even the most challenging moments. Watch the filmed podcast https://youtu.be/u7bFg6e7RBw (here) https://www.thereconstructedman.com/ (www.thereconstructedman.com) layneanddaniel@gmail.com ABOUT THE PODCAST: Welcome to The ReConstructed Man, a filmed podcast exploring Trans issues—and more—from a Trans Masculine perspective, hosted by Layne Ingram & Daniel Thurman. Through real, emotional, and hilarious conversations, Layne & Daniel share their personal stories, interview guests and go deep into the often missed, often purposefully ignored stories of the transgender and trans adjacent community.  We welcome anyone—Cis, Trans and everyone in between—who is interested in important conversations around our ever evolving and fascinating world of gender identity and ways in which we can contribute to a ReConstructed and more inclusive society.  This project was born out of a desire to amplify the visibility of the FTM Trans experience, engage an active community of allies, and to embrace and uplift our beautiful Trans* community. Please share with anyone you know who may benefit from this work. ABOUT DANIEL: Daniel is a Transgender man, former high school and college drop out, healthy survivor of childhood trauma and life-long poet who is today, an educator, college administrator, social justice activist, inspiring public speaker, and now host of The ReConstructed Man Podcast.  He started his transition in the early 1990s, well before Transgender identity was well known and support services existed. Yet, his understanding of who he knew himself to be originated very early in his life. Lacking familial and community support or awareness, Daniel found his way through some very dark times and has since dedicated his life to positively model and represent the Trans Masculine experience. ABOUT LAYNE: Layne Ingram is an out-and-proud Transgender man with a passion for raising awareness of and supporting the Trans community, specifically youth and teens. He is a strong advocate for people being exactly who they are and living their lives as authentically as they can.  He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2002 with his bachelor's in communications after a standout, four-year career on the women's basketball team. He was then drafted to the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs. Over the course of his professional career, Layne has worked in the non-profit, professional sports and higher-education sectors and is also an accomplished public speaker and national presenter.   Layne made the decision to transition in 2016 and hasn't looked back since.    Connect with him!

Alice Ruth "Ruthie" Bolton (born May 25, 1967), known as Ruthie Bolton, is an American former professional women's basketball player. Born in Lucedale, Mississippi, she played at the collegiate, Olympic and professional levels of women's basketball. Bolton played in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) from 1997 through 2004 with the Sacramento Monarchs. She played collegiately at Auburn University, teaming with her older sister, Mae Ola Bolton. Bolton has also served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves as a transportation officer. Ruthie Bolton is a published author with two books now available for sale (1) From Pain to Peace and (2) The Ride of a Lifetime. They can be purchased at her website https://mightyruthiebolton.com  In this episode, we were blessed to have a conversation with Ruthie and discuss: Playing in the SEC at Auburn Your experiences playing on the US National Team The mindset needed for recovering from a torn ACL Your journey & accomplishments playing in the WNBA Tell us about your new book: From Pain To Power (what can readers expect to learn?) What would you like to be remembered for? Your legacy. Bolton was named to the team representing the USA at the World University Games held during July 1991 in Sheffield, England. While the USA team had won gold in 1983, they finished with the silver in 1985, in fifth place in 1987, and did not field a team in 1989. The team was coached by Tara VanDerveer of Stanford. After winning opening games easily, the USA faced China in the medal round. The USA shot only 36% from the field, but limited the team from China to 35%, and won 79–76 to advance to the gold medal game. There they faced 7–0 Spain, but won 88–62 to claim the gold medal. Bolton was the team's leading scorer with 14 points per game, just ahead of Lisa Leslie's 13 points per game. In 1994, Bolton-Holifield was named to the national team which competed in the World Championships in Sydney, Australia. The team was coached by Tara VanDerveer. The team won their early games, then advanced to the medal rounds and faced Brazil. Despite 17 points from Bolton-Holifield and 29 from Katrina McClain, the USA fell 110–107 when Brazil hit ten of ten free throws in the final minute. The USA went on to defeat Australia 100–95 to claim the bronze medal. Bolton continued with the national team to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Bolton was the leading scorer in the game against the Ukraine, with 21 points. She helped the team win all eight games to win the gold medal for the USA team. Bolton averaged 12.8 points per game and led the team in steals with 23. The national team traveled to Berlin, Germany in July and August 1998 for the FIBA World Championships. The USA team won a close opening game against Japan 95–89, then won their next six games easily. In the semifinal game against Brazil, the USA team was behind as much as ten points in the first half. Bolton hit a three pointer in the second half to give her team the lead, as part of a 16-point scoring effort, and the USA went on to win 93–79. The gold medal game was a rematch against Russia. In the first game, the USA team dominated almost from the beginning, but in the rematch, the team from Russia took the early lead and led much of the way. With under two minutes remaining, the USA was down by two points when Bolton hit a three pointer to give the USA a lead. Russia tied the game, but Bolton hit another three to give the USA a lead they would not give up. The USA held on to win the gold medal 71–65. Bolton continued with the national team to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The USA won all eight games, including the gold medal game against host Australia to win the gold medal. Bolton averaged 5.0 points per game.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley and Coach Karen Hall will interview WNBA All-Star Edna Campbell. She was the 10th overall draft pick, selected by the Phoenix Mercury during the 1999 WNBA Draft. She was left unprotected in the expansion draft the following year, and was chosen by the Seattle Storm. She became the new franchise's go-to option, but the team finished with a cellar-dwelling 6-26 record. The next year, the Storm drafted its first superstar, Lauren Jackson, and Campbell was traded to the Sacramento Monarchs for Katy Steding and a draft pick. During the second of her four seasons in Sacramento, Campbell was diagnosed with breast cancer. "I was shocked and numb, to say the least," Edna has said. "This was a situation that had me stomped." Yet, her faith, career and experiences gave her a beautiful life to fight for. Amazingly, she continued to live a normal life throughout her treatment. She played basketball when she could, and rested when she needed it. She received treatment and was welcomed back before the fans of her two most recent teams in the Monarchs' final game against Seattle during the 2002 season. Campbell continued to play in spite of the cancer, becoming an inspiring symbol to many survivors. She became the WNBA's national spokesman in its anti-cancer efforts with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, receiving the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award for 2003. After playing as a free agent for the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2005, she announced her retirement from the WNBA on February 28, 2006. During the 2006 WNBA season, its ninth, fans nominated Campbell's victory over breast cancer as "most inspirational and one of the top four WNBA Decade Anniversary moments". Shortly after her retirement the Silver Spurs hired her as a television commentator for the 2006 season.
