Episode 346 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Scott Weller, CTO & Co-Founder at EnFi. The formula for a thriving tech ecosystem ideally looks something like this: * Entrepreneurial-minded person works for startups and learns a ton. Perhaps they even witness success at scale to an exit. * Said person takes lessons learned and builds their own company to an exit. * Said person then starts to mentor and invest back into the ecosystem to fund the next generation of companies. * Said person eventually finds an idea that they can't get out of their head and launches another company. This is the case for Scott, as he was involved in tech from an early age and connected with a talented group of entrepreneurs who were building the first generation of online gaming where he witnessed a couple of exits. He then co-founded and was the CTO of SessionM which led to a successful exit to Mastercard. He was angel investing and advising companies when he and another successful entrepreneur, Josh Summers, saw a problem which was a perfect opportunity to disrupt an industry using AI. Josh has the same startup founder pedigree as he was part of the WHERE team that was acquired by PayPal and then went on to found Clypd which was acquired by Xandr. The two have come together to build a company called EnFi which recently announced $7.5M in seed funding led by Unusual Ventures with participation from Boston Seed, Argon Ventures and Impellent Ventures. EnFi is accelerating complex credit analysis and risk monitoring with AI Assistants for bank and private lending origination, underwriting, and portfolio management teams. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A discussion about the AI landscape in the Boston tech scene. * Scott's background story and his early involvement with one of the very first Internet Service Providers called Intelecom Data Systems as a teenager. * Working at an early stage web gaming startup called Gamesville which was acquired by Lycos. * GameLogic and the early innovation of working with regulated games and the level of innovation in terms of patent creation which was acquired by Scientific Games. * Being early to market with an online video product for SMBs called SnapYap that he started with others. * The founding story of SessionM with Mark Hermann & Lars Albright and how the company evolved through the years, plus its acquisition by Mastercard and how things materialized post-acquisition. * SessionM's involvement in building the very successful mobile app for Starbucks and its bonus & loyalty campaigns. * The background story and all the details about EnFi and how they are disrupting the market. * Common startup mistakes that he sees entrepreneurs make over and over again. * And so much more.

Takeaways – A podcast about learning from the wisdom of others
Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. When I turned 40 a few years ago, it occurred to me that if I didn't start getting healthy, I would be 50 before I knew it, and still feel bad. It was time to make a change in my health habits. I landed on running. I started with the Nike Run Club app that coached me through my runs. As I saw results, both mentally and physically, running became more and more of a passion. I decided to get a coach and start training for a half marathon. That's when I met Michelle Cupersmith. Michelle's resume will tell you she's a senior financial analyst with Light & Wonder, formerly Scientific Games. She has a double major in accounting and psychology. Her resume is impressive but, first and foremost, Michelle identifies as a runner. It's her hobby and passion and she's helped make running a passion for people who she coaches through Team Run Run. Michelle has given me vital lessons, tips, and coaching that allowed me to complete a half marathon in under 10 minutes on average per mile and then train for a full marathon which I completed June 5th. Along the way, running has also shown me important, fundamental lessons that parallel life. Run the Mile You're In What does it mean to run the mile you're in? Essentially, it means to be present in what you're doing. If you're running, run. If you're working, work. When you hit a wall and don't want to continue, take time to be present and do a “systems check” to help get yourself back in the race. “The point is not getting from A to B,” said Michelle. “It's the run itself.” Key Takeaway: Pace Yourself to Accomplish Goals One of the first lessons I learned when Michelle and I began working together is how important it is to know your paces. Whether you're running a marathon, or running the marathon of life, knowing when to run an easy pace, a sprint pace, a moderate pace, or even a recovery pace is an essential life lesson. “Most people will run at a pace that is not sustainable,” said Michelle, “You're killing yourself.” There are so many ways that running can help, beyond just the physical. It involves the body and the mind. Running is the chance to prove to yourself that you can do hard things. In this episode of Takeaways, Michelle shares some of her coaching advice for runners and how that advice translates into important life lessons and business takeaways. Key Takeaways from this special episode include: - There is a difference between rest and recovery - Why is fueling properly so important? - What do you do when you want to quit? - If you have blisters and cramps, you're doing it wrong - How the mantra, Nothing New on Race Day, is so critical I hope you enjoy it! Derik Mooberry spent most of his career with Bally/Scientific Games/Light & Wonder, eventually leading the gaming division of Scientific Games. Six months ago, he was named president of Zitro USA, a company founded by Johnny Ortiz and led by corporate CEO Sebastian Salat. Mooberry is charged with spreading the word about the Zitro games in the United States. He spoke with GGB Publisher Roger Gros at the GGB offices in Boulder City, Nevada in June. (See video below). GGB: Those of us who cover gaming know what great games Zitro makes, but there are quite a few operators who didn't get the memo. How are you going to change that? Mooberry: Yes, there are a lot of people who don't know who we are. And now that we're just entering the U.S. market, we need to emphasize that we're a very well established international company with over 1,000 employees around the world. The company started back in 2007, and Johnny Ortiz has a tremendous passion for games and content and making great products that make customers happy. We have bingo roots where we had tremendous success throughout countries in Latin America, primarily in Mexico, and there are still some people who see us as a bingo company. So when did Zitro begin making Class III games? A lot of our recent success and expansion are in the Class III video slot area. It was probably about 2016 that the company started making the transition to doing video slots in addition to bingo games, and that's really taken off. Our goal now is to get customers in the U.S. market familiar with who we are and what our products are. Why do you think the time is right now? It's what we've seen in other markets around the world. In places like Mexico and Argentina and other key markets, we go head to head with the biggest and best—the Aristocrats, the Light & Wonders and IGTs of the world. And we saw that our products could perform and then in some cases outperform those competitors' products. So that gave us the confidence. I think that our content, our games and our cabinet strategy are ready for the U.S. market. Tell us about the Zitro R&D department, which is often the heart and soul of any slot company. Yes, you're right. R&D is the foundation of everything for every slot company. We have over 300 people working in the R&D department primarily based in Spain today. Our products are developed over there, but they're developed in such a way that we have global aspirations when developing the products. So we're looking at what the market requirements are in the different regions of the world that we operate in. And then even here within the United States, within the different states. You can see dramatic differences in how a product needs to get set up within something that might go in Oklahoma versus what might go in a casino in Southern California. So it's a growing R&D team with a number of resources behind it, focusing on all the normal elements you would expect to build the great slot content. Tell us about your cabinets. We saw them at the Indian Gaming trade show in April, and they really popped. Our new Glare product line features four unique cabinets, all different form factors, four different content streams to go on each of those cabinets. The Glare line has enhanced side lighting so you see 4K resolution on the monitors, which really bring the characters to life. I think maybe the ultimate compliment for us was the number of competitors that came to the booth to look at some of our products.
Theocharis Panagiotis and Christos Peristeris joins us to discuss Scientific Games's path to modernization with Quarkus.
Tom O'Brien was named president of Aristocrat for the Americas and the EMEA region after spending two years as general manager of the company. O'Brien has a long history in gaming, starting as a slot operator in Atlantic City and later moving to the supplier side. In addition to Aristocrat he has held senior roles at Interblock and Scientific Games. It's his second time around at Aristocrat and with the recent reorganization of the company, he's excited to be working with Hector Fernandez, the CEO of the land-based division for Aristocrat. O'Brien discussed his new job with GGB Publisher Roger Gros at the Aristocrat headquarters in Las Vegas in April.
Roger Snows insightful conversation takes the Cheques Play Casino Podcast team to areas deep inside the minds of a casino games inventor. Roger also explains the differences between @Geoff Hall, Derek Web and his approach to inventing a casino game. Also Roger took time during this podcast to clearly explain the details that led to the name change from Scientific Games to Light & Wonder and the re-branding processes. Roger has an incredible background in writing and news reporting that has been able to parley his talents to becoming the Senior Vice President of Light & Wonder and has survived numerous organization leadership changes.
Matt Wilson was appointed the CEO of the gaming division of Scientific Games in 2020, right before the pandemic. He explains how the name change from Scientific Games to Light & Wonder Inc. was accomplished and why. He talks about the structure of the company and how it is now laser-focused on creating great games. He spoke with GGB Publisher Roger Gros just days after the name change was announced at the Light & Wonder headquarters in Las Vegas. (See video below) GGB: The new name is almost a direct opposite of the previous name. How did that happen? Matt Wilson: Well, it was almost our intention to do that. We're saying we're out of the laboratory and into a world where we create great games. There was nothing really scientific about the way we created games. Game designers have these brilliant ideas. They're creative, and there's no science involved. What was the driving force behind the rebranding? So much has changed here in the last two years. I started in March 2020, walked straight into the pandemic, and it's been a roller coaster ever since for everyone, for every part of the industry, for every supplier and operator. Probably the biggest thing was we had a new chairman and a new vice chair come in at the middle of last year, Jamie O'Dell and Toni Korsanos. And they initiated a strategic review of the business. One of the big challenges that we had was that we came together through acquisition, and with that came a heavy debt burden. What did you find? We looked at all the assets in the portfolio. We had a very diverse portfolio across all the gaming segments. The strategy was wherever a player wanted to place a bet, we wanted to be there to facilitate that, whether that was a scratch lottery ticket or a sports wager or a slot machine or a table game product—we wanted to run the full gamut. But we made the bold decision to divest lottery and sports, and we thought that those two businesses would be very good as stand-alone organizations. The core competency of the lottery business is building scratch lottery tickets, and distributing those into retail locations all around the world. That couldn't be more different from building a Willy Wonka slot machine with animations and sounds and graphics. So we sold the business, and with that went the brand, because the brand had a whole lot of equity with those lottery customers. That left us in a position where we had to rebrand out of necessity. Did you have a list of names that you were considering? The last thing we wanted to do was have a bunch of executives in a board room coming up with names that they thought were cool to rename the company. So we went through a stakeholder-led process. We did a lot of surveys and engagement with employees. It's largely an employee-facing brand. That was the primary focus for us, but we also interviewed customers, and asked them what's important to them. And obviously, great games are important to them. Then we engaged a company called Lexicon. Their whole business is built around naming companies. They came up with 2,700 names, and we started to whittle them down. Obviously, one of the key things is trademarking. We came up with a lot of great names that ultimately couldn't be trademarked, so it's a small universe of names that are applicable. We just narrowed them down through natural selection and we ended up with Light & Wonder, which I think everyone will warm to over time. With sports betting and lottery gone, how does it change the corporate structure? The things that are left in the portfolio now are businesses that actually really fit together and belong together, and in a very competitive world, that's what you need. You need a flywheel where all these businesses actually fit together, belong together and can add to each other. So what's left is the land-based gaming business, which I run. Then we have the social casino business, SciPlay, that's all about building great games, deploying them in a social format. And then you have the iGaming business, which is all about slot games for real money.

Alex Dreyfus, originally from France, now living in Malta, one of the betting and Blockchain hubs of the world. Alex is a true serial “net-preneur”, having started several internet related businesses, exited some successfully and struggled with some others. We are diving deep into the world of Blockchain, Tokenization (Club Token) and his current platform Socios.com powered by ChiliZ. Alex, is raw, open and shares it like it is (enjoy the colourful language). Key Highlights Started off as a computer geek in his hometown in France, first computer at the age of six and build his own Online Forum at the age of 14 Left school at the age of 18 without any degree & without parents approval, in 1995, created his first company Mediatis which he sold later to Publicis Group Next act, Webcity.com – initial great success and then company went bankrupt (lesson, not as important to be first….) Took a short term job to survive and then started working on his next move, WINAMAX , online poker and sports betting website targeting France (license from the UK) Sold his shares due to conflict with partners and moved to Malta (2006) and started Chiligaming – Chilipoker – online betting Sold business six years later to listed US company (Bally Technologies now called Scientific Games, listed company) Next founded Global Poker Index, global poker ranking (ATP of Poker) – started to create a “sports like product” - Global Poker League (only lasted one year, currently on hold) Learned the importance of monetization of fanbase and that's how ChiliZ got started Love hate relationship with Crypto initially – anti-Bitcoin before he started to understand the tech behind it while working on Esports and Fan engagement ideas ChiliZ – raised US$ 66 million through private placement in first half of 2018 (at the height of ICO's, before crypto crash). Got timing right (compared to Sportsfix, Marcus' ICO in later 2018) ChiliZ is the currency of the ecosystem, the Token for activities. Also includes an Exchange to trade the token. Originally focused on Esports but gave up due to various reasons and focused on traditional Sports teams Socios.com – fintech fan engagement & monetization platforms for sports teams Vision – 99% of fans are not in the Stadium, how can you get the 99% deeper engaged using a Fan Token (creating Superfans) Having a share of voice – digital asset vs crypto currency - Fan token are not a crypto currency – Socios.com launched a year ago, 300k downloads, people buy and trade token How to buy Token on the platforms…..transaction flow Tiering of Clubs decides level of Token being put out into the market Pricing of token, initially set – fluctuation based on demand once listed What is a fan – many ways to define, Fan token purchased by Crypto enthusiasts (50%) (early adopters) and superfans (non-crypto audience) (50%) Currently token only traded on ChiliZ platform, soon tradeable outside on other exchanges US$ 5-6 million worth of token sold (not money raised as you will hear
