Parenting in the digital age can be confusing and scary. We know a lot of our listeners have the same questions that we do when it comes to technology and our kids! Today on the podcast, we are interviewing Dr. Devorah Heitner who has a PhD in Media/Technology and Society, is a parent, author, and screentime expert. She brings a lot of passion to this topic and answers all our questions with a new perspective surrounding social media, devices, and screentime when it comes to our kids!Every family will have a different take on screentime. Instead of judging others for their comfort zones and boundaries, Dr. Devorah encourages us to talk about screentime with friends and family to see the ways other families approach the use of tech in their homes. Dr. Devorah gives us her insight on wearable devices that have gained a lot of popularity with younger kiddos. We also ask the question “when is it the right time to give my child a cell phone?” Many factors go into this answer and Dr. Devorah breaks them down for us. Most importantly, we need to mentor our children on how to conduct themselves online and on their devices. Having the hard conversations about the content they view and conversations they have with their peers will help lead them in the right direction. There is no blueprint, but Dr. Devorah does give us a lot of insight into things we should discuss and think about before giving our children access to being online and devices.Links & Resources:Free Shipping at GOODR with code ‘HERSELF'Try Forage Kitchen!Follow Dr. Devorah Heitner on InstagramDr. Devorah's WebsitePurchase Dr. Devorah's Books; “Screenwise” and “Growing Up in Public”SubstackLet's connect!HERSELF PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcastHERSELF INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/herselfpodcastMEET AMY: http://instagram.com/ameskieferMEET ABBY: http://instagram.com/abbyrosegreenThis episode was brought to you by the Pivot Ball Change Network.

From tiktok posts to pin locations, our kids every action is being monitored, recorded and available for the world to see. We employ apps to check their text messages and create fake social media accounts to see what they are doing and how they are doing it- our kids no longer have any privacy. For some of us, who are unwilling to give in to the social pressures of allowing our children to navigate these systems too early, we then have to deal with the impact of exclusion for our children in the name of "protecting them." It's a complicated issue and one that feels like "no man's land" even still. We are parenting as AI takes over, and TikTok rules the world- but how do we keep our children safe and allow them to maintain some autonomy? It's tough, admits author Devorah Heitner, PhD, but she does have some really good suggestions, based on the research from both of her books, Growing Up in Public and Screenwise.Jess and Jess have a million questions for Devorah, so many, that she has been invited back for a second interview! But this one is definitely informative and food for thought.Support the show

How are you managing screen time during the pandemic?  According to at least one survey, kids' time online has more than doubled since the pandemic began, and many kids now spend more than 6 hours per day online, in front of screens. And no wonder -- screens are now our portal to school, work, socialization and extended family. Which means that now is great time to examine our response to screens. Seriously. Many adults have a visceral, negative reaction to the sight of kids-on-screens, but the truth is that screen time itself is neither good nor bad. Digital devices are tools that can be used in a variety of ways. "Screens are not a monolith," says Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise and founder of Raising Digital Natives. Instead of lumping all things digital into "screen time," she says, parents really should look at what their kids are doing. As much as possible, parents should adopt an observant (vs. judgmental) stance to their sons' technology use. Adults can also role model responsible tech usage. Our kids should see us "using technology in an ethical, thoughtful, mindful way," Devorah says. In this episode, Jen, Janet & Devorah discuss: Why all screen time isn't equal Dealing w parental guilt Role modeling responsible internet usage Tech "addiction" Helping kids gain control of their screen time When to seek professional help Managing online, in-game purchases Financial literacy in the digital age Helping boys recognize and respond to racism, sexism and extreme ideologies in memes Mentoring vs. monitoring Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Raising Digital Natives -- Devorah's website Screenwise: Helping Kids Survive (& Thrive) in Their Digital World -- Devorah's book Screens & Boys -- ON BOYS episode Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World w Jordan Shapiro -- ON BOYS episode iGen - ON BOYS episode Decoding Boys w Dr. Cara Natterson -- ON BOYS episode mentioned at 18:50 The Role of Memes in Teen Culture -- NYT article by Jen   STAY CONNECTED WITH JANET & JEN: Join the Building Boys FB group and the Boys Alive! Devorah Heitner is not just another mom concerned about raising a digital native. She uses her Ph.D. in Technology to research, teach, write, and lecture about how families everyday lives are affected by digital media, smartphones, and video games. She’s the author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. And her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and TIME magazine. Devorah did a great TEDx talk about cultivating a culture of empathy and social/emotional literacy around kids and technology. She recently wrote a fantastic article for the Washington Post about how a smartphone would’ve saved her mother who had learning disabilities. Anytime parents find out her line of work, she gets cornered because every parent is anxious about their kids' multi-tasking, their social skills, them taking and receiving naughty pictures, cyberbullying, and well…the list can go on. But Devorah paints a brighter picture. She’s a media historian here today to let us know our concerns over digital media are a normal cycle of historical anxiety, and although we need to be cautious about the technology, we also need to celebrate the freedom the technology allows us and our families.     Show Note Links: Raising Digital Natives   Devorah Heitner's book, "Screenwise"   Devorah Heitner's "Washington Post" article- "My Mother Struggled with Learning Disabilities.
