WLNY-TV (channel 55), branded as New York 55, is an independent television station licensed to Riverhead, New York, United States, serving the New York City television market. It is owned by the CBS News and Stations group alongside CBS flagship WCBS-TV (channel 2). The two stations share studios within the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan; WLNY-TV's transmitter is located in Ridge, New York. The station's over-the-air broadcast covers most of Long Island, but WLNY-TV is available on cable and satellite systems throughout the New York City market. Channel 55 went on air on April 28, 1985, as WLIG. For its first 26 years of existence, it was owned by Long Island businessman Michael Pascucci; it primarily offered older movies and syndicated shows, though it also featured a 10 p.m. newscast. It spent seven years fighting with Cablevision of Long Island for a channel on the cable system, a battle which sapped the station of potential viewers and was only resolved with the reinstatement of must-carry regulations. Those rules allowed WLNY to gain access to cable systems throughout the New York area, even while its location at some distance from New York City enabled it to carry popular syndicated shows also sold to the New York stations. In 1993, the station reinstated its local news department, which by 2011 was airing one Long Island–focused newscast each night. CBS agreed to purchase WLNY in 2011 and took control in 2012, dissolving its existing news division for newscasts from the Broadcast Center which vary between WCBS newscast extensions and shows which air nationwide on fellow CBS-owned independents, but have no Long Island-specific focus. In 2021, the Los Angeles Times revealed that the purchase came with a membership to the exclusive Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, built by Pascucci, which CBS Television Stations president Peter Dunn treated as his own; another executive joked in a call that the acquisition of WLNY represented the purchase of a golf membership, not a TV station. This was among several allegations against Dunn that led to his termination from the company. WLNY currently offers morning and 8 p.m. newscasts from WCBS-TV. 227 A look at the broadcast news industry from RTDNA CEO Dan Shelley

In September 2023, E&P reported on the Arizona Newspapers Association and the Arizona Broadcasters Association merger. In the past year, there have been several legacy newspaper and public media mergers, such as Chicago Public Media's acquisition of the Chicago Sun-Times, The Steinman's "gifting" of their 150+-year-old Lancaster, PA newspaper to the local public broadcasting outlet and the Denton (TX) Record-Chronicle becoming part of Dallas-Fort Worth's KERA Public Broadcasting operations. Many news media pundits predict that, in the very near future, we will see more broadcasting and newspaper newsrooms working as one to compete for larger audiences and achieve new economies of scale to achieve sustainable business models. For this reason, E&P sought insights from the Radio Television Digital News Association's CEO & President Dan Shelley on how the RTDNA is helping journalism survive in today's complex local news media ecosystem. Topics discussed in this episode of "E&P Reports" include the fight for cameras (and microphones) in courtrooms. Should the news media industry police itself in defining who is a journalist? We also explore the growth of citizen journalism, its impact on local news media outlets and more. Dan Shelley is president and CEO of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and president of the RTDNA Foundation. Previously, Dan was senior vice president of digital content strategy for iHeartMedia, senior vice president at Interactive One (part of Radio One), director of digital media at WCBS-TV, New York and an executive producer for WCBS-TV News.

WCBS-TV's history dates back to CBS' opening of experimental station W2XAB on July 21, 1931, using the mechanical television system that had been more-or-less perfected in the late 1920s.[2][3] Its first broadcast featured New York Mayor Jimmy Walker, Kate Smith, and George Gershwin.[4] The station had the first regular seven-day broadcasting schedule in American television, broadcasting 28 hours a week. Among its early programming were Harriet Lee (1931), The Television Ghost (1931–1933), Helen Haynes (1931–1932), and Piano Lessons (1931–1932). Because W2XAB was broadcasting its video on 2750 kc and audio separately on W2XE at 6120 kc in the shortwave band in 1931,[5] the experimental station's signal could be received in nearby states beyond the New York metropolitan area, as far away as Boston and Baltimore.[2][3] In Allentown, Pennsylvania, some 80 miles (130 km) distant, the local newspaper even listed W2XAB's daily program schedules, for example, as did the Ithaca Journal in upstate New York, 175 miles (282 km) northwest.[5][6]

We're witnessing a catastrophe unlike anything Florida has seen in years. It is one of the most powerful storms to hit the US in recorded history. Hurricane Ian did weaken to a tropical storm overnight but it's far from over as it churns toward the Atlantic ocean. So far, there is one confirmed death in Deltona, in Volusia county. The storm made landfall yesterday as a strong category four hurricane slamming communities along Florida's west coast with devastating storm surge, torrential rain, and violent winds up to 150 miles an hour. This morning, we're getting an aerial look at the damage outside Fort Myers, one of the places hit hardest by the hurricane. Entire neighborhoods are underwater and some houses are on fire. Right now, central Florida is taking the brunt of the storm. Orlando is looking at the potential for serious damage, and St. Augustine is also very much in harm's way. President Biden has approved Florida's request for federal help, declaring the storm a major disaster. In St. Augustine, on the east coast of Florida, many people are riding out the storm despite an evacuation order. Meteorologist, John Elliott, of our New York station, WCBS-TV, is here to show us where Ian is headed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The veteran broadcaster was one of the first network correspondents to describe the scene at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Dahler, who was reporting for ABC News at the time, lived just blocks from Ground Zero. He was on GMA moments after the first plane crashed into the North Tower, and Dahler was part of ABC's coverage as the unthinkable became a reality. Residents of a Queens neighborhood are dealing with a squirrelly threat. Denizens of the New York City borough's Rego Park neighborhood say an aggressive squirrel has jumped on them and bitten them for several weeks, WCBS-TV reported Dec. 30. Micheline Frederick pointed to a bruise on her wrist where she said the squirrel landed on her and then sank its teeth into her fingers and hand. “We're wrestling in the snow and there's blood everywhere and my fingers getting chewed and it won't let go,” Frederick said. “Eventually, it just stopped and there I was, a big bloody mess.” A photo Frederick says she took after the attack shows a snowy pathway covered in blood. “This was an MMA cage match! And I lost!” she added. Two other neighbors told WCBS the squirrel had jumped on them, seemingly unprovoked. “These squirrels are aggressively going after people,” Vinati Singh said. The reason for the squirrel's aggressive behavior is not clear. (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

As the Michael Flynn legal drama comes to its denouement, the media narrative has focused on his guilty plea to lying about conversations with the Russian ambassador and the Justice Department’s late decision to seek to drop charges against Flynn. But Flynn’s other foreign entanglement, with Turkey, may be even more significant to U.S. security, foreign policy and democracy. In a wide ranging interview, John Metaxas speaks with Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University about Flynn’s admitted lobbying for Turkey, his advocacy for the extradition of a Turkish cleric living under political asylum in the United States, and Turkey’s role as a destabilizing force within NATO. Topics covered: 1:05 Why is the Flynn/Turkey connection so important? 2:20 What does this connection tell us about U.S. democracy? 4:36 Who is Fetullah Gulen? 6:56 Tell us about Gulenist schools opened around the world and in the United States. 9:30 What’s happening to many of those Gulenist schools around the world since the falling out between Erdogan and Gulen? 11:44 What are students learning at Gulenist schools in the United States? 13:34 Compare your nuanced description of Gulen with Flynn’s more one-sided portrayal in his op-ed in The Hill. 15:29 Would there be any justification in extraditing Gulen, as Flynn advocated? 17:00 Will we ever know whether Gulen was involved in the coup attempt against the Turkish government, as Erdogan alleges? And will we ever know where Gulen gets his funding? 19:00 Why is Turkey and what’s happening there important to the United States from a geopolitical point of view? 22:45 What is the status of Turkish forces that have encamped on Greek territory along the Evros River? 25:00 What are the implications of Turkish deployment of Russian S-400 missiles for U.S. nuclear weapons located at the Incirlik air base in Turkey? 26:52 President Trump has said he has a conflict of interest because he has a major building in Istanbul. He was willing to appoint Flynn as National Security Advisor despite his ties with the Turkish government. And he effectively gave Erdogan the “green light” to invade northern Syria in a phone conversation. What role does the Trump Administration play in all of this? 30:33 Discuss any apparent “carte blanche” given to Turkey in the light of the beating of U.S. citizens in Washington D.C. by Erdogan’s security detail. 32:24 What do Turkey’s soft power probings into the United States tell us about what’s happening to American democracy? 37:24 What is the status of the re-democratization movement within Turkey? 40:27 Why has Flynn’s Turkey connection not been central to the media narrative in the United States? Dr. Elizabeth H. Prodromou is a faculty member at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where she directs the Initiative on Religion, Law, and Diplomacy. She is non-resident Senior Fellow and Co-Chair of the Working Group on Christians and Religious Pluralism in the Middle East, at the Center for Religious Freedom at the Hudson Institute, and was non-resident Senior Fellow in National Security and the Middle East, at the Center for American Progress. She is a Co-President of Religions for Peace International. Her research interests focus on geopolitics and religion, with particular focus on the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. Speaking exclusively to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in Normandy, France, in an interview that aired Thursday, Trump slammed Pelosi in response to a report by Politicowhere the House speaker apparently told top Democrats she would like to see him in "prison."“I think she’s a disgrace. I actually don’t think she’s a talented person, I’ve tried to be nice to her because I would have liked to have gotten some deals done,” Trump said. “She’s incapable of doing deals. She’s a nasty, vindictive, horrible person. The Mueller report came out, it was a disaster for them.”Reports: Mexico proposes deal to avoid escalating tariffsFaced with President Trump's promise to impose escalating tariffs, Mexico is reportedly proposing deal where it would stem the number of migrants heading north by deploying as many as 6,000 National Guard troops to the country’s border region with Guatemala. In addition, according to reports, the potential deal would give the United States far more latitude in deporting Central Americans seeking asylum. Trump has pledged to hit Mexico with rising tariffs starting Monday if the nation does not take more measures to stem the rush of migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump's tariff threat looms amid a new report that ISIS had plotted to take advantage of vulnerable spots at the U.S.-Mexico border and infiltrate the United States and target financial institutions.Times Square grenade-attack plot thwartedA suspect described as “a lone wolf” was arrested Thursday in connection with a plan to throw explosives at people in New York City’s famed Times Square, according to reports. The Grand Bahia Principe La Romana, the hotel where the couple -- Kaylynn Knull and Tom Schwander -- say they stayed, is where a Maryland couple was found dead in their room on May 30. Knull and Schwander said they opted to file a $1 million lawsuit after the resort denied their request that they name the chemicals they use while gardening, or refund their money.Knull and Schwander's allegations are just the latest to blight the Dominican tourist hotspot. The family of Pennsylvania woman Yvette Monique Sport, 51, told Fox29 Philadelphia she died in her room at the same hotel chain. Another U.S. tourist, MirandaSchaup-Werner, from Allentown, Pa., died in her room on May 25 at the Bahia Principe Bouganville, almost adjacent to the La Romana property. During his tenure in the Senate, and as recently as Wednesday, Biden had broken from his party's popular stance and expressed support for the amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds to subsidize abortions except for cases of rape, incest or when a woman's life is endangered by a fetus, a notion with which Democrats take issue because of the potential impact on women in marginalized communities. He faced backlash from other Democrats after his campaign held that he supported the amendment despite allegedly telling a woman during a rally that he would repeal it.Don't mess with Queen BeyNicole Curran, wife of Golden State Warriors majority owner Joe Lacob, was in tears and had to disable her Instagram accountafter Beyoncé fans started sending her death threats for having a conversation with Jay-Z, according to a report. “Journalism is hard work, it’s tedious, it’s serious, it’s necessary, and it’s the foundation of democracy.” In August of 1973, after attending the Michelle Clark Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists at Columbia University, Pinkston was promoted to WLBT’s 6:00 PM newscast, the first African American to anchor the #1 newscast at Mississippi’s #1 television station. In 1974, he accepted a position with Post-Newsweek Station WJXT-TV, a CBS affiliate in Jacksonville, Florida, as the urban affairs director and producer. In 1976, Pinkston transferred to Post-Newsweek’s WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut, where he held posts as anchor, reporter and producer of public affairs programs. While working in Hartford, he earned his J.D. degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1980. That same year, Pinkston was hired as a correspondent with WCBS-TV, where he worked until 1990 when he was appointed as a CBS News White House correspondent. Pinkston reported on stories of national and international significance from the Persian Gulf War to the nomination of Justice Clarence Thomas. In 1994, he moved to the CBS New York news bureau and served as a correspondent for CBS Evening News as well as a contributor, reporter and correspondent for other CBS news broadcasts, including CBS Reports, CBS 48 Hours, and CBS Sunday Morning.  In 2013, Pinkston ended a thirty-three year career with CBS. His final report included an interview with Myrlie Evers Williams on Medgar Evers’ efforts to open broadcasting to minorities.  After CBS, Pinkston worked as an adjunct professor at the City University of New York School of Journalism and The University of Mississippi Meek School of Journalism, and as a freelance journalist for Al Jazeera America.  Pinkston’s work was first recognized by the Great New York Safety Council for his reporting on underage drunk driving and its influence in the shaping of New York state law on underage drinking and driving. He is the recipient of a national Emmy award and an Edward R. Murrow Award for his work on CBS Reports’ “Legacy of Shame,” and two other national Emmy awards for reporting on the death of Princess Diana and the TWA Flight 800 disaster. He has also received a Community Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for a report on the aids crisis among African Americans. www.javiermercedes.com Follow me social: Host: @JavierMercedesX Show: @PassionInProgress Support the Podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/javiermercedes

Episode 9 of Insider InSites is a conversation with Arlene Manos, the President Emeritus of Ad Sales for AMC Networks on her upcoming induction into the IRTS Hall of Mentorship, taking early risks, forging new ground and becoming a mentor. Manos describes her journey from print to television, working with top shows like The Walking Dead, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad and spotting and nurturing top sales talent. Recognizable for more than her signature red-frame eyeglasses, Manos who was at the helm of A+E and AMC Networks, is also recognized as powerhouse in the ad sales and television industries. E.B. Moss: The International Radio and Television Society Foundation - or, now as a forum for all aspects of media it’s just called “I R T S” - says that its mission is "building future media leaders." So I guess that's what mentoring is all about? Arlene Manos: I think it is. And like so many of those names of things we used to be, like American Movie Classics becoming AMC or A&E was originally Arts and Entertainment... things grow and morph and change their direction and purpose. So initials can stand for a lot. That's exactly what has become true of the IRTS. And they do develop [future media leaders with their] intern program and the young scholars and summer programs.... Moss: At MediaVillage we've frequently gotten impressive fellows from the IRTS.  Manos: I think it’s very worthwhile. It encourages diversity and is a terrific program. Moss: Something I read on the IRTS Web site would be a great way to frame up our conversation today: it's ultimate goal is “to bring together the wisdom of yesterday's founders, the power of today's leaders, and the promise of tomorrow's young professionals.” So let’s talk about the wisdom you've gained in the ad business from others. Who did you count on in your early stage career? Manos: Well, Jack Myers was the first person to hire me into the television industry! Moss: Jack Myers the founder of MediaVillage? Manos: That's right. But looking further back...I [realize my first mentor was] a much older man at a magazine in Philadelphia. He was a very traditional guy who ran a sales force, but he never saw a difference between men and women. He thought everybody deserved a shot and was as fair as could be. And he believed in me, gave me a very fair break, and started me off in sales. ...As did Jack, when he hired me from print into television. Moss: Jack was the local sales manager at WCBS-TV and you had been at Philadelphia Magazine and Manhattan, Inc. when he brought you on board for a new retail business development department to tap into your knowledge of high end retailers? Manos: Exactly. Very few upscale retailers (like Bloomingdale’s and Saks) were using television, just print. My retail contacts helped the effort. At the time, it was spot-oriented, not developmentally-oriented, so there were a lot of headwinds that Jack and I navigated, forging new ground...and we put ourselves on the map with that initiative because it was a very difficult task but caught on very nicely in the fashion and retail industries. Moss: What was your take away from that early experience of forging new ground with Jack? Manos: I was not comfortable with, but willing to take risks ... I was pretty good at collaboration and disarming them a bit because at that point it was a hardboiled sales staff and they didn't welcome our efforts much. But, there's nothing like success and we were successful and therefore, respected. Moss: You were selling classic movies on what had been American Movie Classics. When the brand started to evolve with top shows like The Walking Dead, how did that change how you managed the sales force and even hired? Manos: I don't think there's any such thing as a born sales person but I look for common characteristics: energy, passion, work ethic and the ability to read other people and to read a room. Do not try to put people into a pattern or a box - managing them is as individual as who they are, and people are motivated differently. There have to be certain basics there because you can't spend all your time mentoring people. You have to see in them the ability to emulate... to pick up on best practices around them. They really learn from one another as much as they do from me. Moss: How do you find the right balance between advising and telling? How do you coach someone? Manos: Be direct and honest with the person, not confrontational or judgmental. You must tell them when things are not going well. They don't always love you for it, but it's not always about encouragement. Moss: As things were rapidly evolving in the last 10 years, with number one shows on your hands, you’ve had to be innovative with advertisers. Did I read that you brought in about a billion dollars in revenue in any given year? Manos: We're getting right up to that now. We have a whole stable of products here, beyond just Mad Men and Breaking Bad. BBC America and IFC are both very well directed in their own rights. You must know your target and know who's the right fit. Perhaps Amazon or Coca-Cola is right for a very expensive spot. However other advertisers need something different, a little more context or immersion. We’ve worked in cooperation with Samuel Adams and IFC’s Documentary Now. Samuel Adams promoted the show with a documentary kind of panel - almost like a PBS show where they were highlighting, not serving Samuel Adams beer. They were really immersed in the show – it’s something different that we could do with IFC; you can't do it with all networks. Moss: There's a difference between branded content and product placement. Where do you see those types of tactics going? Manos: I see them as going in exactly the way I just described it. That was a very good example of it. It meshed very nicely, you can't just plop a product in front of somebody who's drinking vodka and [on] have some Mad Men and have it be so obvious because it ruins the show. The producers won't put up with it and the audience doesn't like it either. Moss: You have also done some pretty innovative things with The Walking Dead. I think that you've allowed advertisers to borrowstand by some content and turn it into their own sort of custom content?   Manos: That is done to some extent, you know zombies are zombies. If somebody wants to do something, you can't own zombies. There have been some clever uses of it that didn't affect the show badly.   Moss: Given all the new opportunities for content to be consumed across so many different platforms and brands to be incorporated in innovative ways, the industry is in flux. What do you recommend as a mentor? What do you recommend for the sales forces out there today? Manos: Just expose yourself to as much as you possibly can. Go to conferences, become aware of everything and don't think that your area is not going to change because it's all changing. At this point we have invested in the streaming services, so we see things changing. Stay very alert and immerse yourself.   Moss: Who would you like to have as a mentor – even anyone in history - if you were starting out today?   Manos: Hmmm...I would go back to that man that gave me my very first chance to go into sales because I didn't even know what media sales was. I would have been a writer if had chosen a career, but I needed to make some money and he looked at me and he said, "I think you can do it." And that gave me a lot of confidence. Moss: And then you brought others along as well. What goes around comes around, Arlene. Manos: I have never thought of it that way. Thank you for reminding me.  Moss: Absolutely. It's been a pleasure talking to you, and learning from you. And I think this podcast will help others learn a little something in perpetuity. Manos: That would be that would be very warming.

In January of 1969, WCBS-TV in New York City began to broadcast a series of half-hour lectures under the banner of Black Heritage: A History of Afro-Americans. The series, which ran six days a week until June of 1969 (108 episodes in all), was produced by historians John Henrik Clarke, Vincent Harding and political scientist William Strickland—the later two who were founding members of the Institute of the Black World, a groundbreaking thinking tank that was based at the Atlanta University Center. According to historian Martha Biondi, by providing “ordinary Americans access to the Black history courses beginning to be offered on college campuses…these men personally bridged the gap between scholarship and activism.” Left of Black is proud to be of the many progeny of this visionary project, born during an era in which Black student activism on American college campuses helped transform institutions that less than a generation earlier, Black students were largely denied access to. This moment is chronicled in Martha Biondi’s new book The Black Revolution on Campus (University of California Press). A historian at Northwestern University, Biondi joins Left of Black via Skype to talk about what she describes as “an extraordinary chapter in the modern Black freedom struggle.” Biondi is also the author of To Stand and Fight: the Struggle for Civil Rights in Postwar New York City (Harvard University Press, 2003).
