Emerging as Phase Fatale in 2014, Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner, Hayden Payne is rewriting the discourse of Techno with his cross-pollination of gnarly basslines, sensual narratives and mind-control mechanics. Demonstrating his vision through an authentic, highly curated sonic-lens of techno, Payne's rhythmic excursions draw on both his roots in the New York and Berlin underground as well as his reputable experience performing to dancefloors globally. Exemplified by long-standing tenures as a resident for esteemed institutions such as Berghain as well as KHIDI in Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Payne demonstrates a resolute understanding of harnessing club synergy across his productions and DJ sets.  With three full length albums under his belt, including the 2020 sophomore release ‘Scanning Backwards' on Berghain's Ostgut Ton, Payne's sonic signature pushes the boundaries of techno sensibilities and reflects the zeitgeist whilst staying true to his own vision. Wasting no time since his solo project's inception to showcase his expert sonic ability, Payne has toured globally performing at renowned clubs and festivals worldwide, releasing numerous records on labels including Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and his own label BITE.  Payne co-launched the BITE imprint in 2018 as a means to platform cutting-edge sound production across a diverse roster of international artists. Along with fellow Soft Crash protagonist Pablo Bozzi pioneering ‘Italo Body Music', BITE's seminal synthesis of curated techno solidifies the label as a tour de force taste-maker within electronic music with showcases worldwide including Berghain and their 5 year anniversary compilation ‘Shedding Skin' in 2023.  Hailing from post-punk roots, Payne draws on his depth of musical knowledge and multitude of influences. His merging of nuanced references and high concept narratives remain geared towards the dancefloor at its core, subtleties of his multifarious sonic palette act as the foundations for his layered wall of sound. “Awww mannn…” As of the recording of this episode, we were hyping ourselves into a frenzy to get fired up and ready for the upcoming PANTERA show (with King Parrot and Lamb of God opening) at the Ameris Amphitheater in Alpharetta, Georgia on September 12th, 2023.   And as of the publishing of this episode, we will have already borne witness to the awesome display of power which made PANTERA the quintessential metal band of the 90's (more on that later…), and for that, we give “bigly tremendous” thanks and our utmost respect to both Charlie Benante and Zakk Wylde for joining Phil Anselmo & Rex Brown in the global crusade of preserving the memory, sharing the music, and highlighting the timeless legacy of The Brothers Abbott, as well as showing the younger generations of metalheads why PANTERA was, is, and always will be so incredibly special to the world of heavy music.    (Again, more on that later…)   Get your “fish chicken” ready because it's time to get “boned up about the wings” and prepare to understand why “mosquitos” are evil and “eminent domain” should be outlawed. The Discomfort Practice

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 2023 16:52

If you've listened to some of my recent solos and interviews, you'll have picked up that I'm on the cusp of entering a new stage of life. I've packed up my life in Barcelona, put my things in storage, finished up my academic year as a Professor and am headed to Mexico on a one-way ticket in just a few days. The preparation for leaving one stage of life and stepping into the next has gotten me thinking a lot lately about transitions and nature and my place in the whole rhythm of things. And, during the deep discomfort and anxiety that has come up as I've been in the deep discomfort of not knowing what comes next, of a big transition, I haven't been the nicest or happiest or most serene version of myself. It's been interesting to observe and it's gotten me thinking about a snake shedding its skin. As a Wyoming Kid, I have always been taught that, during seasons when you know rattlesnakes are shedding their skin (which they do regularly), do whatever you can to avoid them because they're scared and blind and MEAN. They can't see very well, so they're more likely to strike. But then I started learning more about the process of a snake shedding its skin - and WHY it sheds its skin regularly - and it all started to feel like a very relevant personal metaphor for big moments of transition.   So settle yourself in and consider how this metaphor might be relevant for you, and be sure to listen to the end, when I share one of my favourite poems of all time, Desiderata by Max Ehrman.    Don't forget to like, subscribe and leave a 5-star and written review on this podcast, wherever you listen to podcasts. It helps me to reach new listeners and, hopefully, to reach someone on exactly the right day with exactly what they needed to hear. Let me know what you think of this episode and others!

GST has traditionally been both of our favorite Pantera record because of it's insane vibe but FBD might objectively be their best record. I think the grime and vulnerability of FBD influenced the nu metal movement. Here we see Phil's lyrical perspective shift from detached aggro bro word salad to intense, sincere, vulnerable, and outright uncomfortable honesty. By using different vocal styles and harsher screams Phil paves the way for the next 10-15 years of mainstream metal music. Vinnie permanently etches his name into the history of metal drumming by expanding the vocabulary to places that people still haven't really caught up to. Dime gets weird af and establishes himself as a legit legend. And the unsung hero, Rex, holds in all together. Above all both of these records are creative and artistic statements. Anyway, I'm gonna stop typing because I have too much to say, so take a listen.

We owed you all an episode, didn't we? Well, here it is!We're back with the not-so-NEW episode we promised you of 'Adult-ish' featuring our fave co-host, Vincent Bernard, for a conversation around shredding & processing growth as an adult. While chatting about his academic plans in August (yeesh, we're behind), Vince takes a deeper dive into where he is in his life, his insecurities, and embracing the idea of "shedding." Much like abandoned crab shells, we humans go through periods of shedding and the duo speak to what the universe has been speaking to them in the Summer of 2021. While hitting a bowl and allowing their minds to flow, the duo mull over their desire to grow professionally and how they never really understood how important THIS aspect of life can be to adulting.Host: Afiya A.http://twitter.com/lajoliepoeta http://instagram.com/alja0214 Clubhouse @Aljaugustwww.aljathewriter.comCo-Host: Vincent Bernardhttps://www.facebook.com/vincent.bernard.543http://instagram.com/vincentbernard_83http://www.twitter.com/vincebernardAdult-ish Podcast http://twitter.com/adultishp0dcasthttp://instagram.com/adultishp0dcasthttp://facebook.com/adultishp0dcast

As we continue in the season of Advent, David Wallace reflects on how we might be driven by obligation and what our invitation is to shed the false skin that covers our true selves [Luke 3:7-18]. Reflection Reflect on the difference you feel when you say or do something out of obligation instead of a willingness in your heart? What "programs for happiness" are you attached to? This week, an authentic and transparent episode of The Catchup. First, Denison shares his big move into a new townhome, and cohabitation with his girlfriend. It's a big step for anyone in a serious relationship. So, we chat about why now was the time to make the move, the early challenges, and what he's learned from sharing a space with another. Then, John shares his battle with melanoma. From a sudden change in a mole on his skin since birth, to a surgery that left a cut the length of a foot. Despite the rocky path to a clear diagnosis, John shares how he stayed positive through the process despite the added stress of his vehicle being vandalized. This one comes filled with some entertaining stories from the trip to the hospital. The conversation wraps up with why positivity, seemingly-outlandish internal confidence, and faith in a higher power are keys to weathering every storm in life.It all tees off with John's late entry to Hollywood hit Tropic Thunder. Why movies like it should be cherished - not lambasted - for the role they play in society. It's an all-new Catchup! At a time, when metal was on the decline, these guys brought in your face riffs packed with heavy Texas groove! The Dallas boys, Diamond Darrell, or rather Dimebag Darrell who he affectionately became to be known, was a master shredder and his brother Vinnie Paul on pounding drums; along with Rex on a thumping bass and Phil Anselmo on some screaming (ass) vocals made up this band. They had many albums. some in the glam rock vein, full of KISS and Van Halen love. But it wasn't until the release of Cowboys from Hell in 1990, that they broke down the metal walls. They were able to cement their legacy with a few more great albums, before they went on hiatus and broke up in 2003, way too soon. Phil and his drugs, were pinned as the bad guy in the breakup. But he went on to front many other bands. On a side note: Phil along with his biographer Cory Mitchell, hosted the Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas in 2014 and 2015, in which I was lucky to have been a part of. It was a fantastic blend of horror movies and metal! However, the event died along with Cory Mitchell when he had a heart attack loading out and died in the parking lot the morning after Danzig closed down the festival. But today we are honoring Dimebag as today is the 15 anniversary of his passing. Tragically, in 2004 in front of crowd in Columbus Ohio, Dimebag was shot point blank just after taking the stage in with his new band, Damageplan, that he had formed with his brother on drums. The gunman, the coward, was said to be distraught over the breakup of Pantera when got on stage and killed 3 people, before he too was gunned down by a fast acting police officer. His brother Vinnie Paul, carried on with the band, but he too passed away too soon, just last year. To start us off, is Shedding Skin off of Far Beyond Driven, which celebrated it's 25th Anniversary this year: That was Cemetery Gates off of CfH and before that was Hollow, the song that closed 1992's Vulgar Display of Power album. I was at the GNR reunion tour in Dallas a few years ago. The next day, friends and I make the pilgrimage to Dimebag's grave. Upon arriving at the cemetery gates and not knowing where to go next, we asked a landscaper, he immediately knew who we were looking for and replied "Dimebag aqui, Dimebag aqui", pointing to his gravestone. Gathered around the grave were many concert goers from the night before and many joints layed as an offering on his headstone. 6 feet deep lies the man, in a gifted KISS Kasket and with Eddie Van Halen's personal yellow-and-black-striped Charvel electric guitar from Van Halen II, Bumblebee. fitting, since Dimebag's last words on Earth were, "Van Halen!" moments before he was gun down. Somebody near us said that they ran into Vinnie Paul at the concert last night and shows us proof, a photo together on their cell phone. Pantera and the legend of these 2 men captivated us all. Here is Dime's solo from the song Floods" off of 1996's, The Great Southern Trendkill. Rest in Peace Abbott brothers! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message
