New Year, New Mini. Well, a day late. Doing our second wave of minis, and working more fan requests (still such a weird thing to hear), we regale you on the story of when we met. It's really not that fascinating. Just know that Frank Turner is amazing and that Angela Bassett herself made this happen.

We are so excited to share this episode featuring FrankTurner. We are long-time fans and loved visiting with him before his show atthe Bourbon Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska about his writing process, his currentrelease “Undefeated” and the dark Covid years.     Frank Turner is an English punk and folk singer-songwriterfrom Meonstoke, Hampshire. He began his career as the vocalist ofpost-hardcore band Million Dead, then embarked upon a primarily acoustic-basedsolo career following the band's split in 2005.      In the studio and during live performances, Turner isaccompanied by his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, which consists of BenLlyod (guitar, mandolin), Tarrant Anderson (bass), MattNassir (piano, mandolin) and Callum Green (drums).     To date, Turner has released ten solo albums, four raritiescompilation albums, one retrospective "best of" album, one splitalbum and five EPs. Turner's ninth studio album, “FTHC” was released on 11February 2022 and reached number 1 in the UK albums chart in the week followingits release. –Taken from Wikipedia  Frank's most recent album, “Undefeated” was released May 3,2024. It is his 10th full-length album.      Check him out here:  Website: frankturner.com  FB: Frankturner  IG: frankturner  YouTube: frank-turner

In many ways, Frank is the perfect name for this well-loved singer-songwriter, producer, and eternal punk rock firebrand.  Kind of like the many tattoos that adorn his arms, Frank Turner wears his heart right on his sleeve. Always unstintingly honest in all his artistic endeavours, Frank's music carries a candour and conviction that's incredibly powerful – devastating, even. Frank always manages always to have the ability to connect directly with the human heart – whether sharing tenderly of his own life's journey through his songs, or pushing back with snarling ferocity against fascism and injustice, his music resounds with urgency, authenticity, and humanity. No matter if you're talking about the all-out sonic assault of his fearsome band, Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls, or – equally powerfully –  when Frank is in the intimate solo acoustic mode that we experience on this episode.  As we'll hear during this Hidden Track Session, Frank Turner is an astoundingly intelligent and acute observer of the human condition, a seemingly tireless road dog, a devoted music nerd of the very highest order, and a truly humble soul.  He carved out some time between shows to join us in CKUA Live Performance Space in Edmonton, as he passed through on a relentless world tour celebrating his triumphant 2024 release, Undefeated. The record arrives on the heels of his 2022 album FTHC (for Frank Turner Hardcore) which – 15 years into his solo discography – saw this folk-punk troubadour shoot all the way up to Number One on the British Album Chart! For context, other artists to score UK Number One albums that year were people like Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift.  But rather than try to repeat that formula for success, Frank decided to take the opportunity to instead to make this new album without a major label; and for the first time in his ten albums to date, to produce it entirely himself, in his own home studio.  And as Frank tells us, the songs on Undefeated are mostly derived from stories drawn from his own life journey. In conversation, Frank is a fount of wonderful stories, insights, jokes, and esoteric music trivia – while as a songwriter and performer, he distills all of his brilliance down to a razor-sharp point. Along with a characteristically brilliant conversation with Frank, we're treated to an absolutely exquisite, heartfelt performance of three songs from Frank's new album, solo acoustic in CKUA studios: "Letters", "Girl from the Record Shop", and one of his most beautiful compositions to date, "Somewhere in Between".  Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Recording/Mastering: Brendan Cross | Music: Doug Hoyer

There weren't too many clashes at 2000trees that raised an eyebrow, but the ones that did raised an army! What kind of cruel world forces you to choose between Bob Vylan and Palm Reader? Are they being serious about Gaslight Anthem and Better Lovers? Surely Sean McGowan and The Sleeping Souls is a twisted joke and you're misreading Frank Turner clashing with Lonely The Brave, right? Right? The man behind the plan, Mr James Scarlett, takes his licks and explains all... even manages to put one fire out.  We also discuss the Forest sets. How it's decided who plays twice. The ‘TBAs' and James' masterplan to one day rope Biffy Clyde into playing.  This is our love letter to 2000trees.  But before all that, Gav has some tour tales to share and owns up to why he'll likely never be a tour manager. We go again, next Thursday morning. Be there.

Hello people! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you are all well. This is episode 50, we made it to half a century of face to face conversations held in venues, houses, tour buses, tents, festivals, coffee shops, hotels and pubs around Yorkshire.  I want to thank everyone one who has given their time to have a conversation, Alun, Kieran and Mosh for their help with the recordings and everyone that has listened, got in touch and shared this podcast to help spread the word - it is massively appreciated. None of these episodes would have happened without the various PR companies who have dealt with my many, many emails, artist managers and tour managers who fit these conversations into the busy day of the touring party. Which moves us on to my guest for episode 50, the wonderful Tre Stead, tour manager extraordinaire for Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls.  I first met Tre in January 2019 as she got me past security and through the labyrinth that is the First Direct  Arena in Leeds in order to record episodes 10 and 12 with Frank Turner and Nigel Powel during the mammoth Be Kind tour with amazing supports of Grace Petrie and Jimmy Eat World.  It was clear from our brief interaction that day that she was shit hot at her job of ensuring smooth running of day to day life on tour including rounding up members of the bands, crew and as happened that day, facilitating multiple interviews and pulling people out of said interviews to go and sound check! My bad on the timing, sorry Tre! We have then crossed paths a few times and I heard through other people that Tre can legitimately claim the title of best tour manager as she has won an award for this exact reason. Having seen the impact the pandemic has had on the non performing side of the live music industry as was highlighted by the #wemakelive movement, it felt right to chat to someone who has got through this and is back on the road.  Unsurprisingly, Tre was a delight and gave a really fun conversation.

Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, hope you are all getting by ok. This is episode Forty Nine featuring Sleeping Soul and Dive Dive bassist as well as Vans For Bands head honcho, the very tall, Tarrant Anderson.  Adding to my collection of The Sleeping Souls (Ben and Callum - I'm coming for you!) and another conversation held at Slam Dunk festival where The Sleeping Souls played on the Punk in Drublic stage, this was a conversation I've wanted to have since way back in January of 2019 after speaking to Nigel Powel about Dive Dive and was reignited after seeing the amazing work VFB did throughout the pandemic.  We chat about these topics and more bit, if you have not taken the time to fully appreciate the magnificent bass work that Tarrant adds to Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls or even if you have - please go and check out not just the back catalogue of his work but also any live videos you can find as, without leaping into the air, he without fail delivers a technically perfect  and visually entertaining performance every time - or at least every time I've seen him play.

Hello people! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope everyone is doing as well as can be.  This is episode 48 and a return to some of the conversations I had at Slam Dunk Festival 2021 featuring multi instrumentalist member of The Sleeping Souls and Mongol Horde, Mr Matt Nasir.  Now, I love a Frank Turner Solo gig but when The Sleeping Souls are in full flow, it's quite a force and has produced some of my favourite gigs and festival sets of the last decade and probably more! Matt is a key element in this and has now gone on to duet with Frank. This was lovely to chat and it was also great to add to my Sleeping Souls collection.  We get in to discussing Matt's introduction to music and he is quite possibly the guest who started working as a musician  at the youngest age, how he came to join Frank, joining a hardcore band whilst disliking much of the hardcore- also we agree on a plan to get a new Mongol Horde album recorded.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Frank Turner over Zoom video! Just how often does the leader of one of your favorite bands ask you to do a split album? One where his band covers your songs? It’s the situation Frank Turner found himself in last year, when Fat Mike of NOFX asked if he wanted to do a split covers album. “And I shit the bed and said, ‘Fucking of course I do! That sounds incredible,” Turner recalls. ‘West Coast Vs. Wessex’ does sound incredible: NOFX filtering five songs from Turner’s sizeable solo back catalogue through their singular sensibility, with Turner reciprocating to record five of his personal favorites from NOFX’s 37-years-and-counting career. But these aren’t simply double-time versions of Turner’s folk-punk tunes or acoustic re-workings of NOFX’s iconic SoCal punk anthems - both took time to play with the possibilities each other’s music presented.“I listened to all his records, and I picked the ones that I thought I could make more interesting,” notes Fat Mike. “What I did is change a lot of chords. Frank, he beats me in the singing department. So I can't sing better than he can, but I can maybe throw in a melody here or there or chord that he hadn’t thought of.” Turner took a similar approach. “I didn't want to just do straight covers of anything. I wanted to try and pick songs where I felt like me and my band could bring something different to the table,” he says. “But it did strike me that it would be cool to demonstrate to the casual NOFX fan, who doesn't know who I am, that I am actually a fan. I didn't just go to Spotify and pick the five most-listened-to songs.” For the record, only one of his choices appears on Spotify’s top five for NOFX: ‘Bob’, which Turner here transforms into a wistful country song.“Everything he picked was from the ’90s, so I took that as it’s okay to mostly do his early stuff too,” says Fat Mike, who channeled ‘90s NOFX for their interpretations, transforming ‘Thatcher F*cked The Kids’ into a jaunty companion to ‘Philthy Phil Philanthropist’. Turner and his band, The Sleeping Souls, recorded their songs between their rehearsal space and during tour commitments, whilst NOFX recorded at Fat Mike’s Six Floggs studio, with production by the D-Composers (Fat Mike, Johnny Carey, BAZ Bastien, Yotam Ben Horin). In West Coast Vs. Wessex, the Frank Turner-Fat Mike Mutual Admiration Society has produced 10 hooky re-imaginings of each others’ music - the novelty may pique listeners’ curiosity, but it’s the songs that will keep them coming back.We want to hear from you! The brand new memoir from the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Road Beneath My Feet. Taking 36 songs from his back catalogue, folk-punk icon Frank Turner explores his songwriting process. Find out the stories behind the songs forged in the hedonistic years of the mid-2000s North London scene, the ones perfected in Nashville studios, and everything in between. Some of these songs arrive fully formed, as if they've always been there, some take graft and endless reworking to find 'the one'. In exploring them all, Turner reflects with eloquence, insight and self-deprecating wit on exactly what it is to be a songwriter. From love songs and break-up songs to political calls-to-arms; songs composed alone in a hotel room or in soundcheck with the Sleeping Souls, this brilliantly written memoir - featuring exclusive photos of handwritten lyrics and more - is a must-have audiobook for FT fans and anyone curious about how to write music.
