We often take it for granted that whatever is new is better. That isn't necessarily true. The marketplace can often seize on a product and cause a craze, only to have it disappear in a few years. Everyone looks back and wonders how we could have done that. The paradigmatic case is the waterbed popular in the 1970s and ‘80s. We're discussing a scandal involving our smart devices - big appliances like washing machines and TVs, or the likes of smart doorbells. A recent Which? investigation found many of these products are being sold with pitifully short support policies, or no mention of them at all - putting them, and us, at a security risk. How can manufactures cope with supply chain shortages and deliver the smart products their consumers are asking for? And what sort of smart consumer appliances will CPOs need to support in the future? Rob Lidster, Chief Procurement Officer of GE Appliances, gives us the answers.
Today we're joined by Jad Hamadeh, the founder and CEO of HD Smartglass. A UAE based Glass, Aluminium and Smart Products and Services Company. Executing projects in and around the UAE since 2009, with its services spread into design, fabrication and installation of Glass, Aluminium and more.
Prior podcasts have introduced the digital transformation business categories of "machine health" and "connected employees." In this episode we discuss "smart products." Some manufacturing products are easy to visualize as electronic sources of volumes of data; others, not so much. Yet a significant portion of the products developed, manufactured, sold and/or serviced by manufacturers have great stories to tell, if only we'll listen. The two primary reasons to consider smart products are: (1) to simplify or improve the user experience, and (2) to provide information for you -- the manufacturer -- to improve design by understanding use in the field with specifics. Kinetico® is a water treatment company that sells both commercial and residential units. Those units have consumables that the user must track and address. To make that much easier for the customer, Kinetico has embedded smart technologies in the units to highlight approaching maintenance needs. Printers have done something fairly similar, in indicating when they are getting low on ink. What would make usage of your products by your customers in their various environments, usage patterns, and other variables easier? Jet engines are made of complex metals (currently) produced through very advanced metallurgical techniques. They hardly seem a candidate for generating masses of electronic data. However, both Rolls-Royce and GE have added data collection, analysis, and prediction capabilities. They now receive a premium, through the "as-a-service" business model for significant improvements in fuel efficiencies and flight routes that save their customers literally millions of dollars. This real-time data capability not only facilitate those immediate operational gains, but also provide information to the design engineers to determine how to develop much improved jet engines. Without data, so many things we take for granted today would be more difficult. When considering your digital transformation, smart products is one arena you cannot afford to overlook. Where you prioritize it is one question, but to ignore the potential is short-sighted.

Smart products are all around us, and it is hard to imagine how our lives would be without them. From smartphones to smart toasters, refrigerators, and earbuds, smart products give us a lot of help and make our lives better in so many ways. They perform actions on our behalf and inform our decision-making. Smart products gain their effectiveness through a combination of core components, intelligence, connectivity, and automation. In today's episode, I talk about smart products and the challenges that manufacturers and developers face. I explore smart products' complex nature and the issues surrounding development and security vulnerabilities within the internal and external ecosystem. I discuss the role of building trust, coordination, and alignment across engineering groups. I also discuss the importance of strong decision making, cross-organizational agreements, and prioritizing in-market and new products against strategic goals, growth targets, and sustainability commitments. “The most important thing is the alignment of the various engineering groups both inside your company and the ecosystem that you're working with.” - Paul Heller This week on Innovation Talks: The complexity and sophistication of smart products and why they are hard to create The essential role of apps and connected home platforms and how savvy technical consumers are hooking their smart devices together themselves Support centers, diagnostics, and how performance, hardware problems, and software issues may be managed How connected smart devices are a target of cybercriminals and pose a security risk Why alignment, innovation, and product testing are vital The challenges of software development and the global shortage of semiconductors and computer chips How the vulnerabilities in third-party components and software become built into a company's ecosystem Aligning all engineering groups inside your company and the ecosystem that you are working with to make development easier Building trust and developing a positive internal and external culture Why it is vital to establish strong decision making in product and portfolio management Creating a good governance model, aligning engineering teams, and resisting the urge to dictate how they do their work Why you should focus on comprehensive product line planning to reflect and predict the needs and features of different market segments and geographical regions Gaining cross-organizational agreement on your product investment, launch timelines, and revenue expectations Coordinating the hardware and software departments, product engineering, manufacturing, and third-party suppliers Prioritizing candidate new and in-market products against growth targets and strategic goals and commitments Resources Mentioned: IFTTT (If This Then That) This Podcast is brought to you by Sopheon Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Innovation Talks. Dr. Huub Rutten is one of the Founding members of Sopheon and is currently the company's Vice President for Product Research and Design. After gaining a Master's in Applied Linguistics from Radboud University in the Netherlands, Huub went on to work for several academic institutes teaching linguistics and communications. An adjunct professor at the European Institute for Public Administration (EIPA), he then became a permanent advisor to the European Commission, counseling them on IT and policy development. Huub is instrumental in Sopheon's development of linguistics and knowledge management technologies and continues to lead Sopheon into solutions for Innovation. He currently resides in Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands. Today's episode is part three of our four-part conversation with Dr. Huub Rutten, where we close off by discussing smart product development challenges. He reveals one of the common problems companies face is recalls and the huge cost associated with them, financially and in terms of a brand's reputation. He discusses the changes in the market over the last 70 years and why we can no longer take the attitude of post WW2 product engineers, and his fears that Agile is a framework encouraging a reversal in production ideas. We also expand on the importance of a sound governance system and how it should go hand in hand with its software system. "If you engage the production - the manufacturing engineers - with the product engineers and the feature engineers as early as possible and they are integrated in that process, partly then you will avoid recourse. Then you will avoid quality problems." – Huub Rutten "You have all these recalls, it's also bad for your reputation in the market. It's also bad for your, let's say, relationship with your retailers, for instance, and you will lose shelf space in the shops, and that is killing." – Huub Rutten "Take the Boeing thing as a big example. The problem was the software engineering, and that was a small team. And they made a mistake - it as designed the program; the wrong software. And of course, it cost billions at Boeing." – Huub Rutten "If you were to sell the product, if the plants don't agree up front that they will help to launch a new product on a certain date that is important for the company, they simply won't make the room in their plan to test it - to do the trials. – Huub Rutten "What I'm afraid of is that Agile wants to go back to 50 years ago when the engineers were completely empowered." – Huub Rutten This week on Innovative Talks: How product recalls pose economic and reputational damage to a companies brand How a big decision by a small software team cost Boeing billions of dollars Why corporate goals and capacity distribution are two essential mechanisms Why product management needs to be aligned with their production plants when planning a product launch How the buyer's market has become more 'market pool driven since the 1990s The meaning of governance in product development Huub Rutten: Huub Rutten Sopheon Website Huub Rutten on LinkedIn Connect with Paul Heller: Paul Heller on LinkedIn This Podcast is brought to you by Sopheon Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Innovation Talks. My guest was Jacob Rothman, co-founder of Platform88, which offers services from China. Jacob has over fifteen years of experience working in China. He has founded several companies including Smart Products, Velong Enterprises, and his latest venture, Platform88. With Platform88 his goal is to help hardware entrepreneurs with their manufacturing, retail needs. This is a first episode where a company which is based in China is featured. Since the world's manufacturing base, especially for hardware, consumer products is in China, I find his topic extremely relevant for this podcast. We'll discuss such topics as how much retail and manufacturing has changed in the world and in particular in China in recent years; how Jacob arrived to China and how he got to start his recent company. You'll learn what differentiates them from accelerators, what products they specialize in, what kind of innovations they like very much. We also discussed what market trends he can see that can be significant opportunities for startups. We brought up also an example of a hardware startup called Stojo which they worked with. It's been a busy time here in my basement in Germany and over in Redmond and on the road, and to make up for the long drought, I recorded an extended director's edition of the "Smart Products and Microsoft Services" talk I gave at the CeBIT trade show and several other conferences in recent months and also added a section about "Project Reykjavik" that I've been working on (and which is the reason for the long break) and that Todd first mentioned and showed in his BUILD talk last week. I don't have a demo in this talk, but I'll have that coming up soon. The video is probably really too long, but the upside of the videos here on Channel 9 are that you can pause it when the popcorn bag is empty and you need to get a new one.The scenarios I talk about are about Public Transportation systems and Connected Car, and you may recognize the transportation scenario from my "Internet of Things or Thing on the Internet" blog rant. I also give a refresher on Service Assisted Communication in the context of the Reykjavik discussion. The PowerPoint deck for this presentation is here.
