Live Work with Madeleine I'm Helpless! Part 2 of 3 Today, we are pleased to present the exciting conclusion of our work with Madeleine, a loving mother who fears that her eldest daughter might be in mortal danger during her year abroad. Last week, you heard about the T = Testing and E = Empathy phase of the live work with Madeleine, a mother feeling intense panic and helplessness and inadequacy because she fears that her daughter could be in grave danger of abduction and worse. This week, we will focus on A = Paradoxical Agenda Setting, using the Miracle Cure Question, Magic Button, Positive Reframing, and Magic Dial to see if we can melt away her resistance to change. You can see the Emotions table of the Daily Mood Log Madeleine during the Magic Dial portion of the session if you Click Here As you can see, she wanted to reduce her negative feelings somewhat, but thought she still wanted to keep them fairly elevated, since she still sensed that her daughter might be in real danger, and clearly did not want to abandon her. This is one of the significant refinements in TEAM CBT. First, we want to bring the patient's resistance to full conscious awareness. Second, we want patients to full grasp that their negative thoughts and feelings do NOT result from some "defect" or "mental disorder," but rather from what is most beautiful and awesome about them as human beings. After the Magic Button, David and Jill went on to the final, M = Methods portion of the TEAM session, using tools such as Identify and Explain the Distortions, the Double Standard Technique, and the Externalization of Voices, with the Acceptance Paradox, the Self-Defense Paradigm, and the CAT (Counter-Attack Technique). We will, of course, do numerous role reversals to see if we can get Madeleine to a "huge" victory over her many distorted thoughts. You can see the Daily Mood Log Madeleine prepared at the end of the session if you Click Here As you can see, the reductions in negative feelings were dramatic, but in several areas (anxiety, inadequacy, frustration and anger), Madeleine's negative feelings were still minimally elevated. That is one of the reasons we decided to schedule an additional session together several weeks later to see if we could intensify Madeleine's responses to her negative thoughts, and hopefully due some Cognitive Flooding to complete her "treatment." At the end of these show notes, you will find an email from Madeleine after the session that includes her end-of-session scores on the BMS and EOTS. You will also see comments submitted by many participants who attended the webinar live. This email below from Madeleine following the session shows her end of session scores on the Brief Mood Survey as well as the Evaluation of Therapy Session at the end of her session with Jill and David. Hi David, Yes, here are my BMS & ETS score totals after the extended session. Please let me know if you have any questions. A relapse prevention session would be nice; however, I hesitate to accept your offer as you all are so busy. Please know that I am practicing the PTs and keeping the NTs in check for now. Thank you again a million times over

In this episode, I'm sharing a simple end-of-year practice I've returned to every year since 2017—one that has nothing to do with resolutions, goals, or fixing yourself. It started in a yoga class on New Year's Eve, during a time when my life was quietly falling apart. I was deeply depressed, circling the truth that I needed to leave my marriage, and trying to survive day to day. The exercise was simple: two cards. One for the year you're leaving. One for the year you're stepping into. Not achievements. Not intentions. Just words.I'm walking you through how this practice helped me tell the truth about what a year actually felt like—longing, fear, disconnection, grief—and how naming that reality grounded me instead of shaming me. When you've lived in abuse or survival mode, your inner compass gets scrambled. Your nervous system isn't thinking about the future. It's trying to stay safe. So when people ask about goals or resolutions, everything can freeze. This practice doesn't ask you to know the future. It asks you to tell the truth about the present. Here is the Substack link: https://open.substack.com/pub/jessicaknightcoaching/p/instead-of-resolutions-i-do-this?r=1ecj9w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=trueSupport the showJoin the Patreon: https://patreon.com/Youarenotcrazy *New Course*: Unhooked: Map the Cycle of Abuse in your Relationship Website: Emotional Abuse Coach and high-conflictdivorcecoaching.comInstagram: @emotionalabusecoachEmail: jessica@jessicaknightcoaching.com{Substack} Blog About Recovering from Abuse {E-Book} How to Break Up with a Narcissist{Course} Identify Signs of Abuse and Begin to Heal{Free Resource} Canned Responses for Engaging with an Abusive Partner

Rothkopf, the founder of Deep State Radio and former editor of Foreign Policy magazine, argues that this moment exposes Trump's defining pathology: an inability to respond to tragedy without cruelty, self-obsession, and grievance. From mass shootings to corruption, donors, and a cabinet quietly hedging its bets, they trace how Trump's personal brokenness has become national policy—and ask the defining question: How long can a political system function when it's built around one man's pathology? In this episode, I talk about one of the most confusing and insidious forms of manipulation survivors face in high-conflict relationships and co-parenting: Double Speak. It's that moment when control hides behind concern — when an email, message, or conversation sounds calm and reasonable to everyone else, but your body knows something is off. It's when someone says, “I just want what's best for our child,” while taking positions that go directly against your child's needs or the agreements already in place.I break down how Double Speak operates as a tactic of coercive control — how it creates contradiction, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion — and how to start spotting it before you're pulled into another circular argument. I share real-world examples from co-parenting cases, explain how this pattern shows up in court, and offer practical strategies for documenting, responding, and staying grounded when someone twists words to maintain power. If you've ever felt like you were being gaslit by “reasonable” communication, this episode will help you name the manipulation — and reclaim your clarity.Support the showJoin the Patreon: https://patreon.com/Youarenotcrazy *New Course*: Unhooked: Map the Cycle of Abuse in your Relationship Website: Emotional Abuse Coach and high-conflictdivorcecoaching.comInstagram: @emotionalabusecoachEmail: jessica@jessicaknightcoaching.com{Substack} Blog About Recovering from Abuse {E-Book} How to Break Up with a Narcissist{Course} Identify Signs of Abuse and Begin to Heal{Free Resource} Canned Responses for Engaging with an Abusive Partner

They're trying to convince you that your pain doesn't matter unless other people agree with it.In this episode, I share how abusers use this tactic to isolate and silence you, the emotional math behind it, and how you can start trusting your own experience again.Support the showJoin the Patreon: https://patreon.com/Youarenotcrazy *New Course*: Unhooked: Map the Cycle of Abuse in your Relationship Website: Emotional Abuse Coach and high-conflictdivorcecoaching.comInstagram: @emotionalabusecoachEmail: jessica@jessicaknightcoaching.com{Substack} Blog About Recovering from Abuse {E-Book} How to Break Up with a Narcissist{Course} Identify Signs of Abuse and Begin to Heal{Free Resource} Canned Responses for Engaging with an Abusive Partner

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comWelcome to episode #2 of The Sociopaths Among Us. If you haven't listened to the disclaimer at the opening, go ahead and do that.I've been wanting to write about Candace Owens since 2019, when I engaged in a very short interview with her backstage at a political event. Was she charming and poised? Yes. Also, I'd never in all my years of reporting (or, heck, living) had someone suss me up so intensely and with such speed, deciding in an instant whether to trust or not trust me, and to deflect whatever might need to be deflected.I didn't write about Owens then, but I kept tabs on her. I wasn't interested in the content she was promoting; I don't believe Owens believes in anything other than whatever will advance Candace Owens. But she was the most masterful opportunist I'd encountered (such as it is), able to hone in immediately on what was hot in the culture, to shove her way into that patch of sun and consume its energy before moving on. This “get in, get what you need, get out” is a classic hallmark of the sociopath — their marriages, business partnerships, friendships do not last long — as is the lack of conscience. It's hard to know why Owens is so successful, and then again, it's not. People crave conspiracy theories, and boy howdy has she been doling them out to her 5 million+ YouTube fans. I started on this series only two weeks ago, and since then, she has doubled-down on Brigitte Macron being a man, made a post-assassination claim that Charlie Kirk changed his mind on Israel, indulged the idea of a trap door in the floor where Kirk was killed and where the shooter might have taken aim, and suggested the murder of the Turning Point USA founder was an inside job. I said in the audio that by the time this posts, she will have floated another theory. Sure enough.Do smart people wonder why she continues to do as she does? I don't wonder. Owens needs our attention like a fish needs water, and by water I mean tragedy or controversy or star-shine, and if she perceives a lack of these or, heck, if she's just bored, she'll invent some. There are many wounds in the culture right now, wounds into which Owens can insert herself, something she's been doing since she came onto the scene: she's been the girl boss, the anti-doxxer (by way of doxxing; details after the paywall), anti-GOP then pro-Trump, decrier of victim culture except when it serves her to play victim. She is someone who makes an eight-part series about the president of France's wife having a penis. (What?!) This might all be seen as lunacy, easy to ignore, a flesh-and-blood version of The World Weekly News…… but for the fact that she is feeding on real people's tragedies: Kirk's assassination, the slaughter in Israel on October 7. She is vampiric, and while it's awful to see, can you imagine how tragic it is to be Owens? What must be going on inside of her that she makes these outlandish and cruel statements and, under the guise of “just asking questions,” demands people disprove them? The charitable among us might say, “Just ignore her.” But this woman will not be ignored. She will claw her way to staying relevant, day after day, and thanks to our overheated media environment, people you consider smart sometimes lend credence to her theorizing. Have I mentioned the screenshot of the Fifth Column boys as Megyn Kelly pondered whether some of Owens' theories might be true?It would be a fool's errand to predict what Owens will say next. But I can tell you some of her origin story and how she got where she did ...

Tracy talks with pyschologist Dr. Peter Salerno about the intersection of infidelity and personality disorders. A lot of conventional therapy assumes that clients lack insight into their behavior and that antisocial behavior is the result of childhood trauma. Dr. Salerno argues that this approach ignores the behavioral science of personality disorders. Manipulation, deception, and a pathological lack of remorse are hallmarks of narcissism and sociopathy and these abusive acts are intentional. And to a certain extent, even hard-wired.  How does this science challenge the victim-blaming narratives around infidelity? Could the serial cheater, family abandoner, or deadbeat parent have a personality disorder? Do these manipulative characters keep you confused and hopeful on purpose?  *** Peter Salerno, PsyD,  is a retired licensed psychotherapist, trauma-informed educator, and the author of Nature and Nurture of Narcissism; and Traumatic Cognitive Dissonance: Healing from an Abusive Relationship with a Disordered Personality. Dr. Salerno has received specialized training in trauma treatment and personality disorders and was trained to administer and score the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), the international standard for the clinical and forensic assessment of psychopathy. He has treated mental health conditions in a variety of clinical settings. His first book, Fit For Off Duty, has been required reading for law enforcement officers at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Dr. Salerno has consulted internationally for educational purposes with individuals who have experienced traumatic cognitive dissonance resulting from pathological relationship abuse. He is also a featured expert in the Hulu/Disney+ docuseries Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, where he contributed his expertise on psychopathy and personality pathology. Content note: This episode discusses manipulative and abusive relationship dynamics that may be triggering for some readers. Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who made you question your own reality?  Maybe it's romantic, familial, or even just a friendship where every disagreement somehow leaves you thinking, "Did I misremember that? I really thought I said that out loud... maybe I didn't?" If you're nodding your head right now, you're not alone. For years, my community has been asking me to break down how to identify narcissists and sociopaths because the confusion around these two personality types can literally be dangerous.  When you can't tell what you're dealing with, you can't protect yourself effectively. After 25 years as a licensed psychotherapist, I've seen too many brilliant, capable people get trapped in relationships that slowly eroded their sense of self.  The good news? Once you understand the key differences between narcissistic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder (which includes sociopathy), you can spot the red flags early and protect your peace.
