In Episode 92 of the Camerosity Podcast, we needed to promote every caller to "host status" to tackle the topic of the Italian camera industry.  While a huge number of cameras were made in Germany, Japan, the United States and the Soviet Union, many were made in other countries like Italy, France, England, and Czechoslovakia yet far less is talked about these countries. We attempt to do some justice to cameras from this boot shaped peninsula, spreading some (very expensive) GAS for models like the Rectaflex, Ducati Sogno, and Gamma II.  In an episode where everyone was a host, Mike, Theo, AJ Gentile, Miles Libak, Robert Rotoloni and Will Pinkham share our thoughts on a variety of models. Mike's best reference is an out of print book called Made in Italy: Apparecchi Fotografici Italiani by Marco Antonetto and Mario Malavolti.  This 1983 book is the best reference any of us have found covering the Italian camera industry.  Featuring images and short descriptions for over 150 Italian cameras, this book, plus our assessment of a few models we're familiar with, prove that the Italian camera industry is far deeper than many realize. In addition to a whole lot of Italian GAS, we go over the many different film sizes and formats used by Bencini cameras, Robert spends some time with his favorite Italian subminiature camera, the Gami 16, Mike struggles to explain how the metering system on the Durst Automatica works, he spends a great deal of time professing his love for the Ducati Sogno, and shares with us the wild operation of the very interesting Industria Scientifica Ottica Super Duplex 120, a strange stereo camera that shoots 24mm x 24mm stereo pairs on 120 format roll film. In addition to talking about Italian cameras, we get side tracked and talk about the new upcoming Yashica FX-D digital camera and Mike shares his thoughts on these "so-called" hybrid film and digital cameras and where he thinks the film industry will be in 50 years.  Will Pinkham asks about new 3D printed cameras like the Superflex and the Alfie Tych. Il settore della distribuzione automatica, per cui il nostro Paese è leader a livello internazionale, nel 2023 ha registrato un fatturato di oltre 1,6 miliardi di euro (+2,6% vs 2022) a cui si aggiungono gli oltre 397 milioni di euro del comparto OCS per un totale di più di 2 miliardi di euro. L'Italia ha la più ampia rete distributiva alimentare automatica d'Europa con oltre 830 mila vending machine installate che, nel 2023, hanno erogato quasi 4 miliardi di consumazioni (3.974.040.247) a cui si sommano 1,1 miliardi in capsule e cialde per un totale di oltre 5 miliardi di consumazioni nell'anno appena concluso. È quanto emerso dai dati dello studio Ipsos per CONFIDA, Associazione Italiana Distribuzione Automatica, presentati a Venditalia 2024, la più importante fiera internazionale del settore.

As part of our ‘futures' mini-series, in this episode we are looking specifically at Algorithmic Futures, with hosts of the podcast of the same name: Dr Zena Assaad and Dr Elizabeth Williams, both from ANU. Today we are going to specifically focus on the breadth of the design and uncertainty problem for capabilities augmented by algorithms.  Elizabeth T. Williams is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the Australian National University (ANU).  She has a PhD in experimental nuclear structure from Yale University. Since joining the ANU in 2012, Liz has held an ARC DECRA Fellowship, mucked about with accelerators, code, and superheavy elements, and explored complexity in real-world technological systems. She also led the creation of the hands-on half of the Masters of Applied Cybernetics, convened the School of Cybernetics 2021 PhD cohort program, and will soon convene the newly created Nuclear Systems major and minor for the School of Engineering's Bachelor of Engineering programs.Zena Assaad is a senior research fellow within the School of Engineering at the Australian National University (ANU). Zena studied a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and completed a PhD exploring decision-making under uncertainty to support strategic air traffic flow management. This episode we have the honor of chatting with retired NASA Goddard Space Flight Center astrophysicist Fred Espenak. Known as “Mr. Eclipse”, Fred has authored over 20 books related to eclipse prediction, eclipse observation, and eclipse photography.  He has traveled to all 7 continents to observe total eclipses of the Sun and witnessed 30 total solar eclipses, 11 annular solar eclipses and 9 partial solar eclipses.  He's spent almost an hour and half inside the umbral shadow.   His famous quote, "Before you die, you owe it to yourself to experience a total solar eclipse" is repeated by umbraphiles everywhere when explaining​ eclipses to casual observers.  Today, we chat (remotely) and listen to Fred's tales from the road en route to chasing totality. Nei primi nove mesi del 2023 il settore della distribuzione automatica ha continuato sì a crescere ma lentamente, registrando 1,2 miliardi di fatturato (+1,8%), e oltre 3 miliardi di consumazioni (+1,7%): ripresa più contenuta quindi rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2022 quando le consumazioni erano cresciute dell'8% (dati IPSOS per CONFIDA, Associazione Italiana Distribuzione Automatica). Smart working, guerre, crisi economica e delle materie prime continuano a impattare in maniera negativa il settore che, stima CONFIDA, nel 2023 soffrirà ancora una perdita superiore al 10% rispetto al 2019. A trainare i consumi in questi nove mesi sono sicuramente gli snack (+8%) sia dolci che salati; mentre le bevande fredde, a causa anche del luglio più piovoso degli ultimi anni, hanno registrato una perdita del 3%, come anche i gelati che hanno segnato quasi -6%. Il caffè, che resta il prodotto più venduto (57% del totale delle consumazioni), registra una crescita del 0,33%. Da gennaio a settembre sono stati consumati ai distributori automatici oltre 1,7 miliardi di caffè, ben 6 milioni al giorno.

La storia di Gruppo Illiria è quella di tante piccole imprese locali che si fondono per affrontare le sfide di un mercato sempre più competitivo come quello della distribuzione automatica. Tutto ha inizio negli anni '80 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, precisamente a Udine. Qui Coca-Cola aveva aperto una decina di anni prima uno stabilimento di produzione di macchinette per vendere le bibite. Quando l'azienda americana decide di chiudere l'attività nella zona, la disgrega in tante piccole realtà e dà la possibilità ai dipendenti di comprarle e diventare degli imprenditori. Tra questi c'è Silvano Toniutti, che fonda così Friul Matic. Nel corso degli anni la società riesce a imporsi sul territorio regionale e dopo numerose acquisizioni dà vita al Gruppo Illiria, un'azienda strutturata e pronta ad affrontare le sfide del mercato del futuro.

Chiunque sia appassionato di ciclismo, non può non conoscere il marchio Bianchi. Protagoniste di tanti successi sportivi, soprattutto grazie alle gesta di Felice Gimondi, le biciclette della storica azienda milanese hanno scritto pagine indelebili dello sport italiano. Proprio dalla passione per le due ruote nasce la storia che vi raccontiamo oggi. Tutto comincia negli anni ‘70, quando Angelo Trapletti, imprenditore bergamasco, acquista prima l'azienda Bianchi e poi la Nuova Bianchi, società che si occupa della produzione di distributori automatici, riunendo le due realtà sotto un unico marchio. Dopo varie vicissitudini, che portano la famiglia Trapletti a vendere l'azienda e poi a riacquistarla, oggi Bianchi Vending è uno dei leader del mercato della distribuzione automatica.
