In today's Wellness Revolution episode, you'll hear from Dr. Glenn Livingston, a veteran psychologist who's here to teach us how to defeat cravings with an alternative approach he calls “the backdoor to weight loss”. After struggling for years with overeating and obesity, Dr. Livingston spent decades researching the nature of binging and overeating via work with his own patients and a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Eventually, he and his patients were able to break out of food prison, reach a healthy weight, and develop a much more lighthearted relationship with food. If you're struggling to avoid your cravings, eat in a balanced way, and achieve a healthy weight, this episode is for YOU! “Mindful eating is a big part of recovery. However, when there are chemicals in the packaging for some of these foods that interfere with your ability to know when you're hungry and full… we need some additional tools to make it work.” – Dr. Glenn Livingston Key Highlights: Why people have cravings, overeat, stress eat, and binge eat The psychology behind sustainable weight loss, restrictive diets, and cravings Glenn's rules-based approach to overcoming cravings What happens to your body when you overeat sugar every day Tips for preventing binge eating/overindulging on the weekends Episode Resources: Join Crush Life Boot Camp: https://products.ambershaw.com/crushlife Get 15% off your Kroma Wellness 5-Day Reset Program! Jake and the clinical podcast team talk about chemical and process addictions. Chemical addictions involve substances that latch onto parts of the brain and release an excess of dopamine, creating a dependency. Process addictions, on the other hand, involve behaviors like gambling, video games, and social media, which also release chemicals in the brain and can become addictive. This conversation highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing all types of addictions, as well as the need for patience, support, and intentional efforts to break addictive patterns. Jake Wiskerchen and the group discuss the similarities between substance addiction and process addiction, such as the patterns of behavior and the underlying emotional issues.
Energy medicine can be applied to a wide variety of problems. However, instead of using a pill or machine, energy medicine uses focus, thoughts, intentions, words, and imagery to resolve difficult problems. Its healing potential is supported by true beliefs, receptivity, and gratitude. In this podcast, I share a short recording of an energy-healing session aimed at resolving cigarette addiction. You may focus on other addictive substances you wish to resolve as the recording progresses. During the clinical session, the patient reported a lot of tearing, yawning, and some chest discomfort which may accompany the energy-healing process. I also yawned and teared up during energy work which are signs to me that shifts are happening during the energy work. To my patients and me, these subtle signs suggest that the intentions are shifting biology as well as energy. If you notice some physical reactions to the recording, don't worry, it may be a sign that your intentions and thoughts are helping you shift things at the energy level. Since everything is made of energy, these healing thoughts will have a ripple effect on your mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual life.Warning: be careful and attentive to evolving biochemical changes from your intentions/energy work. It may cause you to become more sensitive to the addictive substances and their negative side effects. These negative side effects can result in significant harm to you if they include decreased respiratory function, increased excitability, or blocking of essential biochemical functions. On the other hand, you may notice an easier process of coming off these addictive substances.Give it a try! I hope that you'll find this meditation tool helpful.Click here to listen to all of The Holistic Psychiatrist Podcast episodesIf you like this podcast, please give it a 5-star rating and share this with others! Khadi is an attorney, mental health and sobriety advocate, consultant, community builder, and social entrepreneur. Her work over the last few years has focused on increasing the wellness of Black girls, women, femmes, non-conforming folks, and queer folks of color. At the time, SBGC was just a blog. Today, it is a coast-to-coast, 501(c)(3) collective that, in addition to the blog, runs a newsletter, mentorship program, four weekly support meetings, and more. Khadi and Sober Black Girls Club have been featured in several publications including the Red Table Talk, The Washington Post, The Huff Post, Teen Vogue, Mademoiselle, and Shondaland. [Episode Summary]: In this episode, Beth Bowen interviews Khadi A. Oluwatoyin, the founder of the Sober Black Girls Club (SBGC), an empowering online community and support network for Black women navigating sobriety. She explores the transformative power of vulnerability, authenticity, and self-acceptance in her path towards sobriety. Khadi also discusses the importance of creating spaces that prioritize joy, pleasure, and community, challenging the traditional narratives around recovery. Her work with SBGC aims to break free from societal norms and create a safe and inclusive space for Black women to embrace sobriety on their terms. This episode marks the introduction to the recovery theme of the podcast. Betsy Byler, LPC-SAS, ICS, LPCC, joins me to talk about substance addiction, love addiction, and the difference between the two. We also discuss addiction from the perspective of brain science and how the brain actually changes the addicted person. It's a fascinating and insightful conversation. Before you turn the episode off or think this theme might not be applicable to you - there's a saying in recovery, “Everyone's recovering from something.” So even if you don't have a dysfunctional relationship with alcohol or another substance, throughout this series we'll be talking about recovery in general. If you are interested in personal development, I really do think that you will walk away with some nuggets of wisdom. If nothing else, you will understand what it's like to be a person in recovery. I hope you do tune in. For those of you new to Betsy, she is a mental health therapist, substance abuse counselor, clinical supervisor, and host of the All Things Substance podcast. Some of the topics we discussed include: The signs that substance use is moving from recreational to problematic and what it means to be an addict (6:16) Why addicts do the things they do based on how the brain changes the addicted person (14:24) Trauma is highly correlated with substance (32:01) How love addiction is biologically different than substance addiction (37:48) http://andreaowen.com/504
Paul J Williams tells a story about how he tried alcohol, pot, cocaine, and ecstasy. Each was not his thing and he walked away. But, a perfect storm presented itself the first time he used crystal meth, while engaging is sex. In that moment it calmed his shame of being gay, gay sex, being sexually abused, and his fear of being inadequate. This went on for years until the final play of the perfect storm was an attempted suicide. Clean and sober since 2015, Paul's story of what his life is like now is interesting and inspiring. I suspect many will relate to some aspects of his journey.Paul's ProfilePaul's WebsitePaul's YouTube ChannelBook: The Velvet RageBe a GuestFollow Us on FacebookPower Moments With MaddoxAll Maddox's Links

Here's the back story with Jordan Frank (who I always knew as Jeff from primary school days). His new stage name Jordan Frank, is in memory of two of his closest friends who sadly passed away and a way Jordan chooses to honour his late friends, who he considered family was to create a stage name that would enable him to take them with him whenever he stepped foot on stage. Jordan's love of music and dance was how I always remembered him as a kid. And it was thanks to those two arts that he managed to find his way back from years of substance abuse and mental health issues. The abuse he endured both self-inflicted and also upon him built the foundation of the type of work and life's purpose he now has to create a better future for the youth within this community. In this episode we talk about:- Jordan's story on how he overcame his addiction- How music is an art that can heal anyone- How the mind remembers childhood trauma's even when we don't. - Sexual abuse with both men and women- The limitations we place on ourselves and how to remove them to move forward in life.At the end of this episode I also surprise Jeff with something he never saw coming as a way to say thank you for a small act of kindness he showed me in Grade 1. Betsy Byler, MA, LPC-SAS, ICS, LPCC decided when she was 16 to become a therapist. A difficult teenager she'd seen and fired therapists until she found a therapist that could get through to her. That experience inspired her to work with angry teenagers and work to give others that same experience of being really "heard." Working with dual diagnosis clients has been a passion of hers since the early days of her career and she has spent the years since running outpatient mental health and substance abuse programs, in addition to training therapists to work in the dual diagnosis space. She makes her home with her family in the woods of Northern Wisconsin. It's a very different scene than growing up in Chicagoland and she wouldn't have it any other way. In her work life, it was a difficult choice to leave agency life for private practice, but the time seemed right. The move into private practice and the following pandemic provided time to work on a new venture, the podcast. Betsy is passionate about bridging the gap between our training and the need for mental health therapists who know how to treat addiction. The podcast, All Things Substance, is the place for therapists to gain the information they need to treat substance abuse in addition to mental health. A movie could be written about Keith Leavitt's story of substance abuse, addiction, being a nightclub promoter in Las Vegas, and ultimately giving it all up and finding meaning in living a sober life and sponsoring other men to help them do the same.
While only 5% of the population meets the criteria for binge eating disorder, 100% of us have eaten beyond our better judgement. In fact, the industrial food complex works to encourage overeating, hitting our pleasure buttons without providing the nutrition we need to feel satisfied. So, what can we do to get a handle on our cravings and develop the self-control to follow a healthy food plan? Dr. Glenn Livingston is an esteemed psychologist and former CEO of a multimillion-dollar consulting firm serving the food industry. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and on Bloomberg Radio, among many other media outlets. Glenn’s current venture, Never Binge Again, grew out of a personal 30-year struggle with binge eating—and a disillusionment with what traditional psychology had to offer in the way of treatment. His book, Never Binge Again, teaches readers techniques for overcoming food addiction and sticking to any food plan. Today, Glenn joins us to share his story of food addiction and explain how understanding the reptilian brain helped him defend against overeating. He discusses the prevalence of binge eating disorder and offers tips for creating your own clearly defined rules around food. Listen in for Glenn’s insight on how Big Food and Big Advertising make it more difficult to stop overeating—and learn how to identify the authentic need behind your cravings and disempower the ‘inner pig’ who’s trying to steer you off track! I had the pleasure of getting mom Julie and son Nate, longtime friends of mine, in the podcast studio yesterday. Julie even surprised us with an assortment of Rudy's Barbeque, my favorite. Fighting a food coma, we were able to tackle their life experiences concerning Nate's substance addiction starting in the 8th grade. Now that Nate is 30 years old and recovered, I am impressed with his resolve to complete two books about his life and his ability reaching out to other at-risk kids in his community by volunteering his time and presence. I felt blessed to have them on the show conveying their knowledge and advice to others out there in similar situations. With children starting to try drugs younger and younger, we felt that this podcast has a definite need if it only helps one parent wake up and pay attention. It was a very unique and fun podcast session. I thank them for coming by....

Check out Josh Matthews' grounded-theory research project on the use of psychedelic and entheogenic substances for the treatment of addiction. Josh's research is being done in the context of a doctoral dissertation, which is titled “Unconventional Pathways to Freedom: A Refined Conceptualization of Substance Addiction, Recovery, and the Transformative Process.” This research takes the form of a qualitative, “grounded-theory” study. Grounded-theory research generates theory based in observation (rather than theory generated simply by one’s intellectual abstractions).
