This week I was delighted to sit down with Ann Molin, CEO & Secretary General of Hack for Earth, for an in-depth conversation on how citizen-led innovation can tackle global challenges. Ann, a psychologist by training, first fell in love with hackathons while working on the Swedish Government's Hack for Sweden initiative, where she realized that bringing people together to solve open-data challenges could spark powerful, real-world solutions in record time. During our conversation, Ann explained how the Hack for Earth foundation evolved from this initial passion, scaling up to engage over 25,000 participants across 125 countries in building tools aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. She emphasized that these events aren't just about brainstorming; they're about bolstering projects after the hackathon ends. Ann's key insight was that sustainable innovation demands an ongoing acceleration program—complete with the leadership support and psychological safety needed for meaningful impact. We also discussed the Nordic countries' tremendous success in both innovation and sustainability. Ann pointed out how a strong social framework, combined with a flat organizational culture, empowers individuals to take risks without fear of failure. She described the critical role of storytelling in uniting groups around environmental goals, noting that the most memorable ideas emerge when empathy, narrative, and relationships intertwine. One of my favorite takeaways was Ann's passionate stance on action trumping endless research. While reading and learning have their place, she believes we can't just wait around if we want to drive change. If you're curious about the psychology behind hackathons, the importance of genuine follow-through, or how the Nordic approach to collaboration might help solve today's toughest challenges, you won't want to miss our conversation. Let me know what you think!

Asylum and Migration policy has been at the forefront of the EU agenda as negotiations have commenced on some key aspects of the new Asylum and Migration Pact. Since the proposal was tabled, in September 2020, considerable progress has been made, although discussions at the recent European Council Meeting were inconclusive. The desire for a rational fact-based approach to the topic can only be achieved by building on a spirit of trust and cooperation between Member States. It has reinforced the belief that the scale and scope of migration management in the EU is best addressed collectively, rather than at Member State by Member State level. In her address to the IIEA as part of the Global Europe project, which is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson outlines the progress made on migration policy, the crises and challenges to overcome, the outreach to third country partners, and on the type of debate needed to continue to make progress if the Pact is to be agreed before the European Elections in June 2024. About the Speaker: Ylva Johansson was appointed European Commissioner for Home Affairs in December 2019. She previously served as Minister for Employment in the Swedish Government from 2014 to 2019, Minister for Welfare and Elderly Healthcare from 2004 to 2006 and Minister for Schools from 1994 to 1998. Ms. Johansson was educated at Lund University and the Stockholm Institute of Education.

Countries need to set aside their differences, recognize their interdependence, and negotiate as equals to tackle the climate crisis, says Sunita Narain, the director general of India's Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) during a C2GTalk. Nature-based solutions can play an important role, but they need much simpler accounting rules, and should be deployed in a way that benefits local communities. Sunita Narain is the director general of the CSE and editor of the magazine Down To Earth. She plays an active role in policy formulation on issues of environment and development in India and globally. She has worked extensively on climate change, with a particular interest in advocating for an ambitious and equitable global agreement. Narain's work on air pollution, water and waste management as well as industrial pollution has led to an understanding of the need for affordable and sustainable solutions in countries like India where the challenge is to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth. She was a member of the Indian Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change and has been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor. In 2005, the CSE, under her leadership, was also awarded the Stockholm Water Prize. In 2016, Time magazine selected Narain as one of the most influential people in the world. She received “The Order of the Polar Star” award from the Swedish Government in 2017 and CSE was awarded the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for peace, disarmament and development for 2018. Narain continues to serve on national and international committees on environment including One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance set up by WHO/OIE/FAO. In our latest podcast, our managing editor, Tina Perinotto, spoke with Dan Hill all about his new role at Melbourne University's School of Design. Dan Hill's got a bit of a fan club in Australia. So there was no surprise that the announcement in April that he was to be director was well received. (No pressure, Dan.)It's a job that's lured him back to Oz after more than 10 years away, during which his City of Sound blog kept tabs on his projects in Scandinavia, the UK and Italy. Most recently he worked at Stockholm University in Sweden, where he held the position of Director of Strategic Design for the Swedish Government's innovation and research agency, Vinnova. There was also the “influential” book Dark Matter & Trojan Horses: A Strategic Design Vocabulary, as the university noted in its announcement of the appointment.Dean of the school, professor Julie Willis told me at his appointment that what was particularly interesting was Dan's blend of skills from urban infrastructure to technology that she thinks students would crucially need by the time they graduated.

Hugo and Kimberly interview Anna Bella, who is from France and has lived in Sweden. Topics include US vs. Swedish Government, healthcare and do America students get real food for lunch?
In 1974, the Swedish Government introduced the first food pyramid. The goal was to educate the populace on the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day from each of the basic food groups. Nearly two decades later, in 1992, the United States adopted the Food pyramid and introduced it to the American public through its Department of Agriculture (the USDA). Since then, the food pyramid has been updated twice. Once in 2005. And also,in 2011. Mind you, something as seemingly trite as a food pyramid had never been introduced to any society in the history of the ancient or modern world prior to 1974. But since that time there has been a constant roundtable discussion about what we should or shouldn't be eating. Of course, the average American citizen isn't allowed at the table nor are any of our so-called representatives. These closed-door meetings and decisions are made without the public knowledge yet they are imposed and permeate every facet of life. One thing understood about human physiology is that it has remained unchanged for thousands, if not, millions of years.
