In this episode we are looking at the challenges AI technology faces when it comes to becoming, and then remaining sustainable. The benefits of AI are unquestionable: from improved medical assistance and increased efficiency in the workplace, to autonomous transportation and next-level gaming experiences. But the more expansive the abilities of AI become, the more data storage that's required. That data storage uses a lot of energy. In fact, it has been predicted that AI servers could be using more energy than a country the size of the Netherlands by 2030. For HPE Chief Technologist, Matt Armstrong-Barnes, the rate at which AI has grown in recent years has had an environmental impact, and he believes that's down to people rushing into training large language models without thinking about longevity, or the need for future change. And that, in turn, has led to data being stored that is no longer needed. The sustainability issue is something that is also a main focus of Arti Garg, Lead Sustainability & Edge Architect in the office of the CTO at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Like Matt, Arti has kept a keen eye on the exponential growth of AI data storage and the effect that is having on the environment, and agrees that the key to a more sustainable future is in how we train models. However, whilst training models well is important, the tech itself is a key component in more efficient AI. Shar Narasimhan is the director of product marketing for NVIDIA's data center GPU portfolio. He believes that a combination of openly available model optimisations and chipsets, CPUs, GPUs and intelligent data centers optimised for AI is a key piece of the puzzle in avoiding energy wastage, and making AI more sustainable all round.Sources and statistics cited in this episode:Global AI market prediction - https://www.statista.com/statistics/1365145/artificial-intelligence-market-size/#:~:text=Global%20artificial%20intelligence%20market%20size%202021%2D2030&text=According%20to%20Next%20Move%20Strategy,nearly%20two%20trillion%20U.S.%20dollars.AI could use as much energy as a small country report - https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(23)00365-3?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2542435123003653%3Fshowall%3DtrueIndustry responsible for 14% of earth's emissions - https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/JICES-11-2021-0106/full/htmlNumber of AI startups - https://tracxn.com/d/explore/artificial-intelligence-startups-in-united-states/__8hhT66RA16YeZhW3QByF6cGkAjrM6ertfKJuKbQIiJg/companiesAI model energy use increase - https://openai.com/research/ai-and-computeEuropean Parliament report into AI energy usage - https://www.europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes/STUD/2021/662906/IPOL_STU(2021)662906_EN.pdf

Marcus shares with me how Targus has continued to innovate and prioritize sustainability, creating long-lasting, environmentally friendly tech protection. I also learn more about the collaborative efforts between Targus and their channel partners in preventing over two million plastic bottles from ending up in the ocean and landfill. One example is the Targus 15.6" EcoSmart ® Zero Waste Backpack which utilizes recycled materials in all elements of the product, even its packaging. It uses it to create the bag's standup silhouette. Thoughtfully designed to help reduce waste, the bag's external packaging is flattened into a rectangle, slipped into a pocket along the back panel, and reused as structural support and added laptop protection.  In addition, this bag was designed with the environment in mind. Using GRS-certified recycled materials, 20 plastic bottles were kept out of our waterways and landfills, shredded into small flakes, re-polymerized into plastic chips, and heated and spun into yarn stitched sewn into the fabric of this EcoSmart® bag. Marcus Harvey is a passionate leader dedicated to building a successful and sustainable business with Targus. Take advantage of this engaging episode that delves into the world of sustainable tech accessories and the crucial role they play in tackling climate change. Tune in and learn how Targus is shaping the future of the tech-accessory industry.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Lucas Arangüena, Global Head of Sustainable Tech and Group Head of Green Finance at Santander. Headquartered in Madrid, Santander is one of the leading European banks and the largest bank in Latin America. They are also the top financier of renewables globally and a leading advisor overall for M&A across renewables, hydrogen, battery tech, EV charging and energy storage, CCUS & ClimateTech, Biofuels, and AgriTech. Lucas joined Santander in 2010 and is responsible for advising clients globally in their energy transition as well as providing corporate finance advice across clean technologies. We were very interested to visit with Lucas and hear his perspective. As you will hear, the command Lucas has of so many of the technical features of today's energy world is very impressive. To start the discussion, Lucas first shares the four themes that are his current top areas of focus including the technology paradigm change taking place with the energy transition, electrification of everything and how to add capacity and storage facilities, advising clients on circular economies, and decarbonizing food, particularly protein, which Lucas cites as being responsible for more than 20% of global GHG emissions. His themes segued into a robust conversation on the future of hydrogen demand in Europe, Latin America's potential and opportunity to help developed economies decarbonize, and Chile's (solar and wind) and Brazil's (hydro power) particular promise. We also discuss Santander's depth and breath in the energy transition markets, touch on some of the projects they've financed in the US, Lucas's and his group's passion for technology, and the future of infrastructure and industry in Europe. We continued the conversation with the importance of having an orderly and fair transition, Santander's decarbonization targets for energy, steel and aviation, the Net Zero Industrial Act compared to the IRA, the odd dynamics of Chinese and Korean battery companies benefiting from IRA tax credits, and Lucas's perspective on the two greatest opportunities for decarbonization by 2030. We ended with the future of public and private debt with as countries continue to provide subsidies for the transition, developments in carbon capture, and the importance of taking action now to achieve decarbonization goals. The Veriten team kicked off the show: Mike Bradley shared his observations on the surprise OPEC cut, noting it's impact on pushing crude oil prices higher and how the last surprise cut in October 2022 also spiked prices over the ensuing weeks. He highlights several reasons why OPEC might have chosen to cut production and then discussed Ovintiv's recent Permian shale acquisition. He wrapped up by noting that Glencore PLC launched an unsolicited bid for Teck Resources and concluded that both these recent deals, as well as a handful of deals announced last week, demonstrate that we're still in the early innings of energy and mining consolidation and that the amount and size of future deals could be healthy. Jeff Tillery shared his thoughts around Q2 earnings with an emphasis on sustainable returns. It was our pleasure to host Lucas and we want to thank him for sharing his perspective. We are excited to spend more time with him in the future. Thanks to you all for your support and friendship!

Since 1990, the global rates of extreme poverty have gone from around 40% to around 10%, and ending World Poverty entirely by 2030 is one of the UN's Key Sustainable Development Goals, announced in 2015. However, progress is slowing, and 710 million people around the world still live in extreme poverty - currently earning below $1.90 per day. So how can technology help? In this episode, we'll be meeting some of the people and organisations aiming to eradicate poverty through the use of technology. The power of connectivityOne of the most important ways in which rural economies can grow and become more efficient and productive is to get access to communications technology. Isabelle Mauro is the Head of Information, Communications & Technology (ICT) Industries at the World Economic Forum. The WEF is the world body bringing together the public and private sectors, and has been pushing for greater co-operation between the public sector and telecoms providers to work on lifting developing communities out of hunger and poverty. The results speak for themselves: Research suggests a 10% improvement in mobile connectivity can add 1.5% to a country's GDP. The challenge is to provide a financial incentive for companies and Governments to reach out to poorer areas where the business case for connection might not be so obvious.Harnessing complex skills and technology for unconnected communitiesOne of the firms leading the charge to bring rural communities into the digital age is Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Brian Tippens is their Head of sustainability, and has been working closely with WEF and partners around the world to enable remote and disconnected communities to take advantage of HPE's experience in data and connectivity - particularly in encouraging skills sharing and industrial expertise among NGOs and other bodies. At the core of their philanthropic ambitions, however, is to allow and enable local communities to help provide their own solutions to their own problems, encouraging long-term, sustainable and useful programs of change to emerge.Getting educatedOne of the ways in which communities can be enabled to develop their own long-term solutions is through education and upskilling the population to take advantage of the opportunities offered by technology. Leading that charge is the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, which provides expandable, programmable micro-computers to schools around the world, alongside locally-led educational programs and learning resources. Gareth Stockdale is the organisations CEO and tells us that the democratisation of technology through enabling local participation is key to lifting people out of poverty, providing pathways to future skilled careers, and to enabling self-sufficiency among remote or impoverished communities. Whether it's educating children or upskilling adults to make the most of opportunities in their community and work in collaboration with international organisations, there's plenty being done to help end world poverty by 2030. Will it be enough? Time will tell. But the appetite seems to be real for long-lasting change.Key takeaways: Even small improvements to digital connectivity can have a lasting impact on local and national economic growth and resilience. Most people have the potential to get connected, and doing so can drastically improve lives in remote communities. The best way to lift the world out of poverty is through public-private partnerships which enable and upskill communities to create their own solutions and take long-term advantage of new technologies. Western organisations have a responsibility not to parachute in solutions, but to work on the ground with communities to enable them to make best use of the technology on offer, through collaboration and education. Timestamps: [02:05] Greg, can you talk us through your journey?  Currently, I co-head the climate investment team at Fifth Wall.  I set up and founded the climate investing team for BMW.  Prior to BMW, I was an Elon Musk world for a number of years. I was head of finance and operations at two of his companies.  I started my investing career at a fund called Battery Ventures. [06:10] John, can you talk us through your journey?  I didn't set out to be a climate tech investor. I have a law degree from Stanford.  I started several companies that were venture-backed, the first was Coldwatt.  I started my first asset management company as an investor in India and set up a permanent capital vehicle for investing.  I partnered with Stephen M. Ross, Jeff Blau and Harvey Spievak and we turned around Citi Bike.   Finally, I set up Footprint Coalition with Robert Downey Jr.  [14:20] Greg, can you talk us through impact investing and how it's going affect our built environment?  Impact investing has historically gotten little bit of a negative connotation to it because in the capital markets people have always said there's real investing and then there is impact investing. A lot of these technologies that people used to think were expensive are now incredibly cheap. [16:50] John, in your 20 years, what major changes have you seen?  We've had a wash out of clean tech, 1.0 companies that weren't sustainable without subsidy. Technology is accelerating, the world looks nothing today, like it did 15 years ago. The talent that has followed the capital that is flooding into this market is truly amazing. [22:30] With technologies such as Carbon Cure and cross-laminated timber, it is expensive for buildings to put into practice and will the cost of these building be higher?  This technology is safer because these things are lighter and they're easier to transport. You need smaller foundations for the buildings and they naturally are able to band with the wind and high-rise buildings.  It's cheaper, it's better for the planets, your buildings go up faster and they weigh less.  We've got to climb up a little bit of a mountain when it comes to training engineers and getting permitting done. [24:50] John, you have experience in alternative proteins, can you expand on that and give an example of a technology in that space?  People are really looking and examining the food supply and thinking about how we can scale in a way that's compatible with the planet. We look for investments in areas where through alternative methods of production, we can create more denser sources of the very things that we need to eat and that are healthier and just better alternatives. Zero Acre Farms ferment in this case, vegetable oil and if you're able to do that you have a much more energy dense way of producing that food without having to go and cut palm forest.  [28:00] Is there something our audience could be looking in to play their part in the future of the built environment?  The simplest thing you can do, inside buildings is turning your thermostat down. What we need is to allow people to voice their opinions and give CEOs and the people who make policy decisions, the power and the space to change how they do business. [30:55] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about;  Lessons learned in your career Greg:  Catch me if you Can and Inventing Anna, these people were to do outstanding things because they had the moxie and the guts to try.  Greg: You fail at a 100% of the things, you don't try. John:  Never underestimate the power of human incentives. Mention a person, product or service Greg: Sealed.com John: My wife Rewarding parts of working in the space: Greg: When you work on anything in climate tech it is quite rewarding inherently because the, technologies you're working on are here to try and save the world. John: I love the community feedback.    What are you most Excited about for the future of the space?: John: I drove a 1968 Volkswagen bus and this one was kitted with a salvaged Tesla engine. EP108: Reducing Food Waste With Sustainable Tech with Patrick Cortes, Sr. Director of Business Development at Mission Produce and Aiden Mouat, CEO of Hazel Technologies

“If we can increase positive interactions with avocados, we're going to grow as a category.”Patrick Cortes (17:13-17:17)   Food sustainability is possible without the use of harmful chemicals, but instead, with chemistry-driven technology that helps reduce waste and supports our health.   Chemistry has a bad wrap in the agriculture world, but companies like Hazel Technology are changing that. Hazel Technologies has created a post-harvest solution that manipulates the environment in which avocados are stored, making them last longer and improving shelf life.    “Every year, close to a trillion dollars in produce goes bad before it can be eaten. It's nearly a third of all produce harvested every year.” - Aiden Mouat (2:58-3:07)   Aiden Mouat, CEO of Hazel Technologies and Patrick Cortes, Senior Director of Business Development at Mission Produce have teamed up together to delay the ripening of avocados and preserve their internal quality.   Think about how many times you've purchased avocados that have ripened too quickly, or you've opened only to find a shade of brown rather than the beautiful, golden green we all love?   By designing a technology that works atmospherically, nothing is applied to the avocado at all. No dips, waxes, sprays or coatings. Just pure biomagnetic chemistry that helps control essential biological functions, almost similar to how we think of our metabolism working. Ever heard of “biohacking”? You can think of avocados stored with Avolast similar to that –– a new, “smart” or “biohacked” avocado that's ripening is prolonged.   Avolast's technology leaves no residue and isn't harmful in and of itself. It's an antidote to the ethylene avocados produce and has been successfully used for the past 30 years in the apple industry.   The long term effects on our world with technologies like Avolast are outstanding. By using a cleaner and more sophisticated form of chemistry, we can reduce the chemical load of food (in the field and out of the field). Avolast's solution is versatile to all country's many diverse picking and packaging processes. There's flexibility and control over how Avolast works in any given environment, starting from the tree all the way up to the consumer.    Not only does this benefit the consumer, but by giving a retailer a mere two to four extra days to sell a fruit, that adds up to a virtual lifetime and can cut through some of the major implications our produce throwaway has on the planet.   “We just can't feed eight, nine, 10 billion people without the influence of chemistry.” - Aiden Mouat (23:08-23:13)   It's a difficult conversation to have about what technology science is helping us create for our agricultural industry, but Aiden Mouat of Hazel Technologies is doing it in a very graceful and transparent way. Who knows, the next avocado you purchase may have an extended shelf life thanks to Avolast's innovative technology rather than harmful chemical processes.   How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business!
