She is the heart and center of Bitcoin education there, even the government is relying on her consultancy. This interview was recorded as Anita traveled through southern Africa in February of 2020, just days before the Covid-19 lockdowns went into effect. Her greatest ambition, the organization of a Bitcoin conference in Southern Africa will not come true soon. “The legacy of our civilization is a state based on a hierarchical system of control and specialization of labor, which leads to all of the modern problems we have. To create a different kind of society, that's free, where people have liberty and natural wealth, the emerging field of cryptography offers us power." -Amir Taaki With markets around the world plunging into a downward spiral, now is a great time to revisit the original reasons why people started working on Bitcoin. Amir Taaki was one of Bitcoin’s first-ever dedicated developers and perhaps the one most infamously focused on maintaining privacy and freedom from authority. In 2014, Taaki created Dark Wallet, the first privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet to include a CoinJoin mixer. That same year, he received even more notoriety as Dark Wallet was twice named in the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) report on the potential money-laundering and terrorist-financing risks posed by cryptocurrencies. In this episode, Dave Hollerith talks with Taaki, who after years spent working with the Syrian Democratic Forces fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and helping build their society, is now contributing to multiple cryptocurrency and privacy projects not yet revealed to the public. Taaki takes a critical, perhaps unwarranted, view on the Bitcoin movement of today, but he also has a valuable perspective on many of the topics covered. Topics: What Bitcoiners can learn from the Free Software movement How Bitcoin has changed between 2014 and today, and why Taaki believes the ecosystem needs to create a new narrative. The pros and cons of American startup culture on Bitcoin's development How Taaki' opposing views of Bitcoin led to conflict with Gavin Andresen, and later the creation of the BIP system. How Taaki believes the Bitcoin of today is not radical enough The limits of mesh networks at a large scale Why Bitcoin needs a stronger narrative to defend against co-option by larger corporate and state entities. What Bitcoiners can learn from Taaki's experience helping build an autonomous free society in Syria The narrative the Bitcoin ecosystem needs to adopt according to Taaki Nym, the Barcelona hacker academy and Taaki's other unpublicized projects The similarities and limits of comparing Bitcoin to religion. What is Bitcoin? This question is constantly posed to us at Bitcoin Magazine. The truth is that the answer varies depending on who you ask. With the recent economic shock from the global spread of COVID19, now feels like the right time to revisit it. In this episode, Dave Hollerith talks with Yassine Elmandjra, crypto analyst at Ark Invest about whether or not Bitcoin does and should correlate to the stock market and global economy more broadly. Yassine doesn't claim to know what Bitcoin is, but he has a firm grasp of the many things it can be in a realistic future, and more importantly, he has a lot of experience explaining its value to less familiar and more skeptical peers and institutions. Topics: The downfall of breathing narratives into existence Bitcoin bugs and the believers of digital gold Why noncorrelated assets are essential for mitigating risk How Bitcoin could potentially separate not just money from the state but also property and the state How Ark uses the Sovereign Individual thesis Who is going to support Bitcoin's development The Cash App's connection to Square Crypto Underhyped v. overhyped Resources: Ark Newsletter Cash App beating Venmo Hunger Games: Libra Addition Twitter: Yassine Elmandjra (@YassineARK) Dave (@dshollers) Bitcoin Magazine Sponsors: Etoro DISCLAIMER: The following content is for informational purposes only. In this episode, Dave Hollerith interviews journalist and author, Brian Merchant, on a recent story he wrote about a darknet website that offers murder-for-hire services. Part hoax and part reality, Merchant's investigation into this scam marketplace led him into a world of white hat hackers, fake hitmen, murderous spouses and real-world victims. He explains that although this dark corner of the internet is essentially fake, it has drastically harmed the lives of innocent people and blurred the line between virtual anonymous markets and real-world life and death consequences. Topics: The origins of online assassination markets. How Chris Monterio hacked into the backend of a murder-for-hire scam website How the murder-for-hire scam had terrifying real-world implications on innocent people The frustratingly slow pace at which law enforcement investigated the issue How Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are implicated in these scams How future scenarios could play out for online assassination markets Resources: Click Here To Kill (Harper's Magazine) Chris Monterio’s blog (Pirate Dot London) Twitter: Brian Merchant (@bcmerchant) Dave (@dshollers) Bitcoin Magazine Sponsors: Etoro DISCLAIMER: The following content is for informational purposes only. “I’ve come to believe charity depends on finding those people who can truly execute on the ground, those real-life angels. Bitcoin is one of the best things for these people because they can work with it. They are completely transparent, they don’t have to go through any of the financial hoops. Most of all, they can convert it to anything, anywhere. It’s beautiful.” —Ray Youssef, CEO of Paxful While speculation and "hodling" are store of value qualities mainly used for bitcoin in North America and Europe, it's also being used as a tool for unlocking the world's unrealized capital by serving the unbanked. Paxful is one company leading this charge by offering bitcoin as a medium of exchange for people in developing countries. In this episode, Dave Hollerith interviews the CEO of Paxful, Ray Youssef, about how his peer-to-peer exchange has enabled a new economy of currency exchange and payments all through the use of Bitcoin. “Everybody has a bias, the important thing is not to Grandstand about having no bias. We see this with internet privacy in general, the narrative is framed by saying, some criminals are using it so let’s make the privacy worse for 99% of users who are law-abiding. That's problematic because at some point it's going to fall into the wrong hands.” —Matt Odell Bitcoin is a tool for financial freedom, but not everyone who buys it understands that this means it also comes with more individual responsibility. For almost a decade, Bitcoiners from all across the world have celebrated January 3 as Bitcoin’s bonafide birthday. It was on that date in 2009 that Satoshi Nakamoto mined Bitcoin’s genesis block and it was this first successful hash computation that defined the political purpose of Bitcoin with the embedded message: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on Brink of Second Bailout for Banks.” Simply put, Bitcoin is an instrument that is specifically designed to resist the inflationary urges of monetary politics, and its qualities empower individuals to become sovereign. However, the business sector that developed and blossomed around Bitcoin has not always remained true to the cypherpunk origins that created it; Often times, exchanges and lending services impose withdrawal limits, freeze accounts and find other ways to arbitrarily restrict users’ access to their funds. In this episode, Bitcoin Magazine's Vlad Costea interviews long-time Bitcoiner Trace Mayer. They discuss how some cryptocurrency businesses tend to restrict the concept of sovereignty that the technology was meant to protect, and Mayer's response to the phenomenon, the Proof of Keys event, held every year on January 3. The work of blockchain analysis companies such as Chainalysis isn’t always welcomed by privacy advocates. However, if you're a Bitcoiner who cares about the future of the industry, this work is always worth watching. And there tend to be two great narratives that we hear about how these companies affect Bitcoin. One is that they bring more transparency and in turn increase Bitcoin’s adoption and legitimacy. The other is that they are leveraging data from the Bitcoin blockchain to provide better surveillance for corporate entities and nation-states at the expense of financial privacy. Coming to the end of what appears to be a successful year of growth, Chainalysis cut 20 percent of its workforce back in November. Today I’ve got an interview with Philip Gradwell, he’s the Chief Economist at Chainalysis. We talk about what exactly is gleaned from blockchain analysis products, why they are seeing so much growth in Asia Pacific, why they cut 39 employees and whether they are putting resources into tracking off-chain transactions (final question). Binance is the largest global cryptocurrency exchange in the world, but they have avoided competing in the US until a few months ago. In this episode, Dave talks with Alex Gladstein about the recent news that China and President Xi Jinping, have publicly expressed admiration for blockchain technology. This news spiked the Bitcoin price at the beginning of November, but Gladstein is weary for what China's public praise could mean for cryptocurrency in general. Gladstein recognizes that blockchain technology by itself is really just a mechanism for control and surveillance of financial data. He believes from a human rights perspective that the real value of the blockchain comes from decentralization, which is essential to Democracy. He states that Bitcoin is the greatest example of a decentralized blockchain and that in the wrong hands, this technology would be used as a tool for tyranny instead of freedom. On this episode of Distributed Dialogues Dave, Grahm and Rick explore a non-traditional approach to treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: psychedelic drugs. Traditional methods of treating PTSD have left much to be desired, not only by those who suffer from it, but from their loved ones as well. This has led to a growing number of people exploring experimental treatments, including many who travel great distances for ayahuasca ceremonies. While these techniques still have a long way to go to reach a mainstream audience, the numbers on their effectiveness don't lie. One such research center is The Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS): a program that has received millions of dollars in funding from Bitcoin. Distributed Dialogues is a collaborative show between the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Network and Distributed magazine. In each episode we’ll introduce you to people who are using blockchain technology to change the way we interact with the world around us. What are the risks and rewards of government involvement in the crypto space? For enterprises, there are little to no regulatory hurdles. They essentially use blockchain technology as a new type of data system. On the other hand, the government’s intended role has been to prevent nefarious activity, scams and any kind of pandemic economic crises. The ongoing point of contention, here, is assessing what level of involvement the state and its laws should have in open source projects. And if there is needed governmental input, would this type of involvement prevent decentralization? In this episode we will hear from two current and former government employees who act as significant points of contact between the cryptocurrency community and their respective governments, the United States and Taiwan. In between, we talk with Konstantin Richter in a sponsored interview, about his company BlockDaemon, which helps new companies build decentralized infrastructures by offering nodes-as-a-service.
Distributed Dialogues is a collaborative show between the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Network and Distributed magazine. In each episode we’ll introduce you to people who are using blockchain technology to change the way we interact with the world around us. With the advent of bitcoin, the idea of a global currency, not unlike the credits of Star Wars came into focus as a reality. People from opposite ends of the globe, and without any greedy intermediaries (looking at you banks & Western Union) could exchange verifiable digital money for goods and services. Crypto established one of the first monetary fields that was without borders and promised to play on a level field for everyone. Today, the globe wheels and deals in cryptocurrencies, and lots of amazing projects, not to mention, investment capital, targeted at growing crypto and blockchain use cases, is coming from Asia and the east. In this episode we hear from two people who carry the leading perspectives on Asian blockchain investment efforts at two of the world’s largest corporations, Foxconn and Alibaba. In between, we talk with the Genaro Network, a Singaporean project building a smart data ecosystem that integrates blockchain and storage layers.
Distributed Dialogues is a collaborative show between the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Network and Distributed magazine. In each episode we’ll introduce you to people who are using blockchain technology to change the way we interact with the world around us. What if you could make money trading on the outcome of the next presidential election? How would one go about selling rental properties, TV shows or oil through a blockchain? And what exactly does it mean to be leading the race towards enterprise adoption of blockchain technology? As people begin to look at the many ways that blockchain technology can change the way we interact with the world, they begin to see new opportunity. In this episode we run the business gamut, hearing from both new ventures in the crypto space, including the team at Augur, crypto’s best-known decentralized prediction market, and new moves by an older tech giant interacting with the Blockchain space. In between, we speak with Trust Token, a project that allows for the tokenization of real-world assets.
Distributed Dialogues is a collaborative show between the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Network and Distributed magazine. In each episode we’ll introduce you to people who are using blockchain technology to change the way we interact with the world around us. As a currency, Bitcoin is not controlled or supported by a third party entity such as a bank or government. And while the idea of everyone using a currency that no one controls can seem chaotic and counterintuitive, many people see it as the best alternative to the internet’s current paradigm. Recently, it’s been made clear that paradigm is one where an online user’s most intimate information can be readily accessed by third party entities such as Google and Facebook and sold to companies with more nefarious goals, like Cambridge Analytica. One great hope of blockchain technology is that it could help create a new version of the internet that puts control of privacy and trust back into the hands of its users. In this episode we speak with David Chaum, cryptographer and creator of Digicash, Rebecca Lerner, Executive Vice President of the Mad Network, Reuben Yap, COO of Zcoin and Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock.com and Executive Chairman of tZERO.

On today’s show I feel privileged to be speaking once again with Shawn Wilkinson, the brains behind Storj. Storj.io is decentralized cloud storage utilizing the world’s best blockchain – that’s right the Bitcoin Blockchain. In the first half of the show I take us all back in time to the 2015 Texas Bitcoin Conference in Austin, Texas and to an interview from the lost Tree House Studio archives. Back in 2015 I had an opportunity to sneak into the Bitcoin conference hackathon and interview the 2014 winner of the hackathon who was . . . you guessed it . . . Shawn Wilkinson – the mastermind behind Storj.io. The 2nd half of the show features Shawn once again as he walks me through how to rent out 20 gigs of storage space on my Macbook Pro. I ask some silly questions and with the patience of a saint, Shawn answers my questions and gets me set up and running my computer as a farmer growing Storj coins and supporting a really great decentralized cloud storage service. Also on this episode you’ll get to hear the one and only Santa Clause perform for us his rendition of It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Bitcoin – a new holiday tradition celebrating the birth of our beloved . . . bitcoin. For more detailed information about Storj, check out John Ferguson’s podcast Technology and Choice – Episode #11 on the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Network.
