QUOTES from the episode: "Most building failures aren't mysterious. They're just ignored fundamentals." "If you demand museum-level humidity, you're no longer building a house. You're building a museum." "Moisture meters don't solve problems. They show you patterns. The thinking solves the problem."   In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Eric Kaiser is joined by Kohta Ueno, principal and co-owner of Building Science Corporation, for a wide-ranging discussion on building failures, moisture, HVAC, and the practical realities of diagnosing real-world problems. Kohta shares his unconventional path into building science, from small remodeling jobs and a PBS NOVA episode to decades of forensic investigations alongside Joe Lstiburek, one of the field's most influential voices. The conversation quickly moves from origin stories into what really matters: how buildings fail, why those failures are often predictable, and how much cheaper it is to solve problems on paper than after construction.   A major theme is moisture management, especially in high-performance and multifamily buildings. Kohta explains how seemingly small details, like window sill slope, back dams, airflow settings, and interior air seals, routinely separate durable buildings from expensive failures. He also highlights a growing perfect storm in modern construction: oversized HVAC equipment, high ventilation rates, poor commissioning, and limited dehumidification, particularly in smaller units. The result is mold, humidity complaints, and systems that technically run but fail to control moisture.   The episode closes with a practical look at diagnostic tools and methods. Kohta emphasizes pattern recognition over single-point measurements, combining moisture meters, thermal imaging, pressure diagnostics, and blower door testing to understand how air, heat, and moisture actually move through buildings. He encourages listeners to use freely available Building Science Corporation research and Joe Lstiburek's Building Science Insights as foundational resources, reminding the audience that most building failures are not mysterious. They are repeatable, understandable, and avoidable if the fundamentals are respected.   Kohta's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kohta-ueno-472a4/ Links mentioned in the episode: Our Current HVAC Mess Experts discuss problems with residential HVAC systems as a first step toward defining solutions https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/our-current-hvac-mess   Proposed Solutions for Residential HVAC Problems Experts suggest ways to improve the quality of residential heating, ventilating, and cooling equipment installations https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/proposed-solutions-for-the-residential-hvac-industry   A presentation on my investigations of multifamily humidity problems: Multifamily Humidity Control Problems: Muggy Mayhem https://buildingscience.com/sites/default/files/presentation-docs/2021-05-06_nesea_be21_muggy_mayhem_ueno_for_pdf_0.pdf   I have done a presentation on the diagnostic tools I use in my buildings forensic work; here's the slide deck: NESEA BE19 Tools of the Trade for Building Diagnostics March 14, 2019 https://www.buildingscience.com/sites/default/files/2019-03-14_nesea_be19_ueno_tools_trade_diagnostics_for_pdf.pdf 2019-03-14_NESEA_BE19_Ueno_Tools_Trade_Diagnostics.pdf   And here's a YouTube video:   Tools of the Trade for Building Diagnostics with Kohta Ueno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZIJFXDl9Q&t=2978s&ab_channel=TheBSandBeerShow   The complete rundown of Joe Lstiburek's columns:   https://buildingscience.com/document-search?search_title=&search=&field_doc_topics=All&field_doc_document_type=3&items_per_page=10   And some of the research reports we did under Building America:   https://buildingscience.com/document-search?search_title=&search=&field_doc_topics=All&field_doc_document_type=8&items_per_page=10   This episode was recorded in January 2026.

In the early months of the Great War, a hand grenade was almost an anachronism — a relic of fortress warfare associated with seventeenth-century “grenadiers” rather than modern industrial armies. And yet, by 1918, it had become one of the most important and feared weapons on the Western Front. This episode is the story of that transformation. From improvised “jam tins” and crude bombs to engineered patterns like the Mills bomb and the German Potato Masher stick grenade we'll follow the technology, the tactics, and the hard, dangerous lessons learned in close combat. Today, excavators carve the foundations of an industrial revolution.Trenches now stretch across the landscape—not for irrigation, but for the utility infrastructure of a battery plant that will consume as much water as a town of 50,000 people. The land, once sold for a pittance, has been revalued at seventeen times its purchase price to accommodate the Chinese guest.Eight hundred kilometres northwest, in the exhausted industrial heart of Wolfsburg, Germany, a different excavation proceeds. Production workers at Volkswagen face the incomprehensible: the company announced the permanent shutdown of its Dresden plant, as the final car rolled off the production lines in December, marking the first factory closure in its 88-year history. Paul Morrison details how Medicare premiums, including the IRMAA surcharge, are inflating at a rate higher than Social Security COLAs. This disparity is causing concern, as premiums can potentially consume a retiree's entire Social Security benefit over time, especially for those in higher IRMAA brackets for an extended period. Paul provides concrete examples of how extended periods in higher IRMAA brackets could lead to Medicare premiums exceeding Social Security benefits, forcing retirees to pay out-of-pocket. On the Wednesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to analyze the Steelers' improvements on both the offensive and defensive lines this season. Does the season sweep of the Ravens validate GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin's years-long efforts to be tougher up front? Why was Derrick Harmon's selection so key to unlocking Keeanu Benton and Cam Heyward in stopping Baltimore running back Derrick Henry in NFL Week 18? Is the offensive line's growth underrated with Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick and Zach Frazier playing well despite the loss of Broderick Jones? And what potential does Dylan Cook have to be a long-term contributor? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks passing game chemistry. How well will QB Aaron Rodgers continue to utilize names like Calvin Austin III, Pat Freiermuth and Adam Thielen with DK Metcalf returning? Will he be able to find running backs Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren underneath? Or will the Texans' pass rush make that difficult in the team's NFL playoffs matchup this week at Acrisure Stadium? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Day 1,399. Today, President Zelensky has revealed details of the proposed peace plan worked out between US and Ukraine delegations last weekend in Miami, that is due to be put to Russia later today. Plus, since it's Christmas Eve, something a little different: a special look at the Ukrainian art scene, past and present. We begin with the generation of Ukrainian artists at the dawn of the 20th century who helped drive the Modernist movement, breaking with centuries of figurative tradition and pushing art decisively into modernity. We examine how artists are later reclaimed by national narratives – and why – as well as how the full-scale invasion has reshaped the global art market. We then turn to Ukraine's contemporary art scene, focusing on one young, emerging artist and exploring how their generation, and their creativity, is being transformed by the war.CONTENT REFERENCED:In the Eye of the Storm, Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s, Royal Academy of Arts: https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/eye-of-the-stormJames Butterwick.
