When I first came across Karen O'Brien's 2021 book early last year, I was immediately drawn to it. Both title and subtitle - You Matter More Than You Think, Quantum Social Change for a Thriving World - called to me, having been exploring the sourcing from quantum theory in Carol Sanford's approaches and recognising the systemic nature of change need to shift paradigms and move us towards holistically better worlds. Not only are the words intriguing and enticing, the incredibly beautiful and meaningful illustrations of artist Tone Bjordam both enliven and deepen my experience of being with the book and exploring the journey Karen invites you to take in. If you've not come across Karen as yet, she is a Professor of Sociology & Human Geography at the University of Oslo, Norway. She is co-Founder of cChange, an organisation supporting transformation in a changing climate. She has participated in 4 UN IPCC reports and, as part of the IPCC, was a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. She was named by Web of Science as one of the world's most influential researchers of the past decade in 2019 and 2020. With all that said, it is of course an absolute honour to have created this conversation with her, and to now be sharing it with you! Johanna Chao Kreilick is the president of the Union of Concerned Scientists, a 501 c 3 scientific advocacy nonprofit based in the United States. She has represented the organization in lobbying Congress and business leaders to address climate change, attacks on democratic institutions and the threat of nuclear war. Regarding the number 1 challenge, climate change, the UN conferences and the UN IPCC have spearheaded the attack to combat this crisis. The UN is an important multinational organization that brings the countries of the world together to develop reports and products used by many expert agencies. The UN Paris Climate Accord is critical in challenging the world to hold to 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. One reason that the US has been so successful as a world leader is due to its democratic institutions that have recently been under siege, especially since the January 6 insurrection to overthrow a free, fair and democratic election.
This week Frank Davis, Assistant VP, Green Hydrogen and Canada Country Head at Pattern Energy joins as our guest. Pattern Energy is developing a green hydrogen project at the Port of Argentia in Newfoundland and Labrador. The project will use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen and convert it into ammonia. Here are some of the questions that Jackie and Peter asked Frank: Tell us about the different parts of the project (electricity production to hydrogen and ammonia). Why did you select the province of Newfoundland and Labrador? How do you manage the variability of renewable power while running the ammonia plant 24/7? How much does the cost of green ammonia compare with hydrogen produced from fossil fuels? Would you look for 10 or 20 year take-or-pay contracts before proceeding with the project or is it a merchant model? How does Canadian policy for green hydrogen compare with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)? Extinction Rebellion, also simply known as XR, is a global environmental movement. It was founded in the UK with the explicit aim of using nonviolent civil resistance to compel government action to avoid ecological collapse. The latest UN IPCC report paints a dire picture of what the future will bring. By 2050, a billion people will face coastal flooding from rising seas. Using radical tactics, Extinction Rebellion draws inspiration from grassroots movements such as the civil rights movement. XR aims to instill a sense of urgency to prevent further climate breakdown and the ongoing sixth mass extinction. A number of XR activists accept arrest and imprisonment. The movement's symbol is a stylized, circled hourglass to serve as a warning that time is running out for us.

The UN IPCC's late February publication Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, looking specifically at the socioeconomic impacts of climate change, was described by UN Secretary General António Guterres as, "an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership." The report issued a strong call-to-action to lower emissions and mitigate climate change while recognizing the urgent need to ramp up funding streams for adaptive measures. Taking a deeper look at the relationship between investing in climate data and building adaptive capacity, we are thrilled to welcome Abubakr Salih Babiker, Erick Otenyo, and Marta Baraibar from the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center, also known as ICPAC for the first episode of our 2022 Earth Month series for Data Points. Leveraging climate and environmental data from a number of sources including Berkeley Earth, their East Africa Hazards Watch platform serves as a crucial early warning system to help increase adaptive capacity in an 11-country region across eastern Africa. In this episode we discuss:

Russia's invasion of Ukraine will speed the energy transition, thus hurting Putin more by removing demand for oil and gas. Europe depends on Russian natural gas which has now proven to be unreliable. Climate goals demanded a transition off natural gas with the use of heat pumps and improved efficiency and building insulation. Why not do it now? How the U.S. military going green is benefitial to them: The many advantages of an electrified fighting force. The UN IPCC 6 report on the impacts of climate change is out and it's alarming news. James says we must withhold all sympathies for oil and gas. Their time is done. Plus: The oligarchs next door. Evraz steel is just down the street from James. A Canadian company is making an all-electric school bus designed for cold weather. We hear new Canadian EV owners who get frustrated by faulty charging infrastructure. China aims to greatly expand its wind and solar power capacity over the next several years through massive projects in the nation's deserts, according to an industry publication. Utah is currently in the midst of one of the most important times for our energy future. The UN IPCC made it clear, we must revamp our energy sector in the next decade to avoid the worse impacts of climate change. To do this, we need to build new clean, flexible, and reliable energy infrastructure that will both serve Utah's growing energy needs while also reduce pollution from our energy sector at the scale and pace needed. Policy and regulatory proceedings at the state and federal level are going to directly affect how Utah transitions to a clean energy future, and how long it will take. At the national level, the President and Congress are discussing major investments in energy infrastructure that could rapidly accelerate our energy transition here in Utah. At the state level, the Utah Public Service Commission, the state agency that regulates electric utilities in Utah, will be reviewing several proposals that that will either build clean energy resource capacity in the state or expand Utah's share of coal-fired power plants. Join Josh Craft and Hunter Holman from Utah Clean Energy to discuss these federal and state actions and learn more about how Utah is planning to transition to a clean energy future. This week marked the publication of the much anticipated IPCC Working Group I Report, a global, multi-year effort on the part of more than 200 scientists worldwide to describe the physical science underlying the current state of climate change and global warming. In this episode of Data Points, Berkeley Earth Lead Scientist Dr. Robert Rohde and Research Scientist Dr. Zeke Hausfather answer your questions regarding the IPCC report. The conversation includes discussion of carbon cycle and carbon cycle feedback loops, emissions and various emissions scenarios, net-zero and net-zero commitments, as well as discussion of sea level rise and ice sheet behavior. Many thanks to everyone who submitted questions for this Q&A; unfortunately we weren't able to answer all of the questions that were submitted, but hope to do additional Q&A's in the future. The full text of the IPCC Working Group I Report can be dowloaded here.

Heatwaves, flash floods, incessant rains, deadly forest fires. Extreme climate change events seem to be grabbing headlines daily across the world and a new UN report has made it clear that some of these climate changes are irreversible. Referred to as 'code red for humanity', the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a landmark report on 9 August which draws on more than 14,000 scientific studies. The report also comes just three months before the important climate summit in Glasgow known as COP26. The report has scientifically projected how the climate will be impacted if carbon and greenhouse emissions are not reduced but underlining it all is a message for the biggest polluters that they need to reassess their climate policy. And one polluter, India, cannot afford to ignore the findings of the IPCC report. The report has predicted an increase in the likelihood of disasters like the Chamoli glacial break in Uttarakhand or Cyclone Amphan in West Bengal. More incessant rains, dry spells, and heatwaves are also frequent tags in the reports when the subcontinent is discussed. What future does the IPCC report predict for the world and what does it mean for India? What action do we need to take? On this week's Power Hour, Alex Epstein interviews economist Ross McKittrick, famous for debunking Michael Mann's once-ubiquitous "hockey stick," about how climate science gets distorted--so that what the public hears about climate science is a wild exaggeration of what most climate scientists actually believe. McKittrick explains: - How the "hockey stick" became ubiquitous despite widespread concerns about its (in)validity. - The real track record of climate models. - Why climate economists are coming under attack for rejecting climate catastrophism. - Why climate catastrophists face a reckoning over the next 10 years. - What we can expect from the UN IPCC's upcoming AR 6. - Why we almost never discuss the benefits of fossil fuels, including their role in driving progress.
Dropping birth rates are good news, not a “slump” we should hope is temporary. Yet news reports, headlines and commentaries about this are consistently displaying a pro-growth bias. We have your back. The Overpopulation Podcast team has mallets in hand. In this episode we continue playing whack-a-mole with instances of overpopulation disinformation. NPR, the Wall Street Journal, Grist, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, and Facebook’s Undivided Attention video series all get a whacking in this episode. On the good news front, syndicated columnist Froma Harrop, Miley Cyrus, Prince Harry and the BirthStrike movement get nods of (modest) approval from the team. On Prince Harry’s declaration that he and Meghan will have no more than two children, podcast host Dave Gardner advises Harry to stop at one child – particularly to set an example. We just have to share this quote from Froma Harrop’s column in the show notes: “What makes for a strong society is healthy people, prosperous people and happy people — not more people. Americans can put low birthrates at the bottom of their worry list.” - Froma Harrop The team also briefly discusses the UN IPCC report, Climate and Land, which joins the growing list of dire warnings about our destruction of life support systems. In response, Dave suggests we “rally” the public to stop growing the population, rather than rallying technologists to try to feed 10.9 billion people in 2100. From the Personal Carbon Footprint to a Green New Deal Massive climate disruption continues to strike all over the world, one disaster after another, droughts, wildfires, typhoons, mega-floods, with glaciers melting and methane escaping from deep under the permafrost. The UN IPCC said we have 12 more years to stabilize greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere to avoid runaway climate change. We need solutions to this problem to spark a climate revolution. During a Vancouver Council meeting on January 16, 2019, a motion moved by Councillor Christine Boyle to declare a global state of climate emergency was carried unanimously. With nine “whereas” clauses — referencing the impacts of BC and California wildfires, the emergency debates at various levels of government following the UN’s recent IPCC report on global warming, the estimated future costs of climate-related disasters to Vancouver, and our current vulnerabilities — plus half a dozen amendments from Boyle’s peers, the motion ended with a series of directives, and a clear call to action. In short, the motion called for an admission that we’re in a climate emergency. It reminded us all that, despite progress in recent years, we’ve failed to meet our previous targets. And it directed staff to formulate, within 90 days, new targets, actions and timelines to aggressively reduce carbon emissions, in-line with IPCC goals.Boyle, one of nine first-time Council members, made time over her lunch hour recently to chat with Gord at City Hall about her motion — what inspired it, the potential implications of climate disaster on vulnerable populations in particular, and where we go from here. For this episode on fossil fuels, Tommy had a chat with Richard Curtin and Aideen O'Dochartaigh from the campaign group Not Here Not Anywhere, who are resisting the construction of new oil and gas infrastructure here in Ireland. We discussed the danger of these proposed projects and what we can do to stop them. We brought up some scary problems in the last episode when we briefly discussed the UN IPCC report - with this episode we hope to shine a light on some of the solutions. Eric and Tommy's rambles this month covered: Countries shifting to renewables, Shell boasting about their influence on the IPCC report, the need to challenge corporate power and to get rid of the profit motive, Bord na Móna being a pack of liars, the yellow vest protest movement and how state governments use half-baked "environmentalism" as a cloak for austerity.
