WELL, HERE GOES NOTHING. I WAS THINKING EARLIER TODAY, HOW SERIOUS I TAKE THIS PODCAST. I REALLY DO. STUFF GOING ON IN THE WORLD MATTERS TO ME AND THIS IS MY WAY OF TRYING TO SHINE THE LIGHT ON SOME OF IT, INJECTING SOME OF MY BAD BEHAVIOR WHEREVER POSSIBLE. ENJOY.
What is your favorite novel? It's a hard question. A big question! A question that makes most people hmmm for a while before they get to an answer. If they get to an answer! But I think I know mine. My favorite novel is A Fraction of a Whole by Steve Toltz. First, the book came to me in an interesting way. I walked into wonderful indie bookstore Type on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto a couple days before my wedding to Leslie. I was looking for a good book to take on my honeymoon. (Insert obvious joke: "You wanted to read on your honeymoon?" But yes. I did. We did!) I spent two or three hours with incredible bookseller Kalpna who painstakingly picked book after book off the shelf working through my way-too-long list of criteria: the book couldn't be too heavy, it couldn't be too *physically* large, but it also had to last the trip because I only had one tiny bag so, you know, it had to simultaneously be fairly dense. And it had to be fiction. And it had to be fast-paced. And it would be good if it was funny. And, and, and... Well, Kalpna (bless her) kept pulling books off the shelves and I kept doing The First Five Pages Test to check every book for pace, tone, rhythm, style, and language. I must have flipped through a few dozen books before I ended up with A Fraction of a Whole by Steve Toltz. A book I'd never heard of! By a guy I'd never heard of! Why? Well, the first sentence pulled me in: “You never hear about a sportsman losing his sense of smell in a tragic accident and for good reason; in order for the universe to teach excruciating lessons that we are unable to apply in later life, the sportsman must lose his legs, the philosopher his mind, the painter his eyes, the musician his ears, the chef his tongue.” I kept reading and it just took off from there. Piles of accolades littered across the jacket helped too: “Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize”, "Finalist for The Guardian First Book Award", "Deserves a place next to The Confederacy of Dunces" (Wall Street Journal), "Soars like a rocket!" (LA Times), "A comic masterpiece!" (Ottawa Citizen) and on and on... I fell deep into Steve's Toltz's absurd world of endless turns and surprise pearls of wisdom and spent years since then trying to land this interview with him! He is a deep and focused writer who is well off social media and doesn't do "the rounds" so it took some time. I emailed him some of my favorite lines from his books, sat in the front row to hear him speak at the International Festival of Authors, and waited -- just waited! -- for his next novel to come out so I could try again. And now it finally has... Steve Toltz was born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia and he is the Man Booker-shortlisted award-winning novelist of three books including A Fraction of the Whole (2008), Quicksand (2016), and his newest Here Goes Nothing (2022). I personally recommend starting with A Fraction of the Whole because it was so deeply affecting to me and many folks I've recommended it to, but all three contain his wholly original sideways genius that constantly amazes and surprises. Steve has lived in Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Barcelona, Paris, and Los Angeles and worked as a cameraman, telemarketer, security guard, private investigator, teacher, screenwriter, and, well, a lot more. I'm not sure he's right but he says in this interview: "If you want to become a novelist you sort of have to be a loser for a while.” I was so excited to talk to Steve Toltz and we go deep on many things including: fear of death, Woody Allen, writing by hand in two-hour chunks, finding your voice, anonymity and success, Russian Literature, how to avoid quitting, how to start big projects, raising readers, books for boys, and, of course, the incredible Steve Toltz's 3 most formative books. It is my privilege, pleasure, and honor to share this conversation. As always, I'll be in your left ear, Steve will be in your right, and we pull up a chair between us for you to come on in... Let's flip the page into Chapter 119 now… What You'll Learn: What does fear of death make us do? What are the different ways authors develop character in a novel? What is the value of a reading list? What is the connection between Woody Allen and Russian Literature? What misconceptions do we have about classical literature? What is Steve's writing process? What is the power of writing by hand? What does it mean to write with your subconscious? What is a writer's voice? How do writer's deal with anonymity and success? How do we not quit big projects? How can we learn to accept criticism? How do we separate the art from the artist? How do you raise a reader? What are the best books for young boys? How can we reclaim our focus? Booker-shortlisted author Steve Toltz discusses his newest work, Here Goes Nothing, with acclaimed author Sarah Krasnostein. As wildly inventive and savagely funny as his first two books, Quicksand and A Fraction of the Whole, Here Goes Nothing is a razor-sharp take on love, mortality and the afterlife. He shares common ground with Sarah, whose book The Believer explores the universal need to make sense of life, death and all that lies between. Steve appears via video. Steve Toltz is the author of A Fraction of the Whole, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Guardian First Book Award and Quicksand, which won the Russell Prize for Humour. Booklist called A Fraction of the Whole ‘a deliriously philosophical novel . . . with uproarious ruminations on freedom, the soul, love, death, and the meaning of life" and in a way that applies to Steve's work as a whole and his new book, Here Goes Nothing. The Irish Times described Here Goes Nothing as, ‘a smart social commentary on our fossil fuel-guzzling, warmongering, information-obsessed, pandemic-riddled world' and as The Scotsman said, he writes with ‘remorseless, brilliantly withering contempt', though this sits alongside a story and characters that are both affecting and strangely moving.Steve's also worked as screenwriter on shows like No Activity and Guilty Party.

Steve Tolz explores a fictional afterlife constrained by similar concerns to that which we would find on earth in his comic and confronting novel, ‘Here Goes Nothing'. ‘The View Was Exhausting' is an inside look at how the rich and famous may live and perhaps an insightful look at the control the publicity plays in their lives, co-written by Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta.
Here Goes Nothing is the last in what Steve Toltz calls his trilogy of fear which began with A Fraction of the Whole. This latest book is narrated by a ghost who discovers there is an afterlife hierarchy and he is at the bottom. Also, Irish writer Audrey Magee on her second novel The Colony which is colonisation in microcosm and Toni Jordan's sixth novel, Dinner with the Schnabels, billed as a family dramedy.

I've developed NERDSoul over the years as a StreetGEEK, unknowingly by loving Wu-Tang, Justice League, Star Wars, Stevie Wonder and playing D&D after school. NERDSoul comes from that StreetGEEK that can chop it up with the best, while being up on game around the block and Pop Culture. Portland-born Justin Hopkins is the quintessential LA story. A road more musicians are familiar with than not. Hopkins began playing multiple instruments at a young age, self-taught on guitar while simultaneously taking piano and bass lessons from NW Jazz greats Randy Porter and Phil Baker. After a brief stint playing college athletics in California, Hopkins graduated from University Oregon. Soon after, he and his band decided to pick up roots and move to the beach cities of Los Angeles, where he became a regular on an early, and emerging Hotel Cafe scene that would spawn Platinum selling careers for his peers like Sara Barielles and Mat Kearney. All at the same time Hopkins was a focused and dedicated behind the scenes songwriter/producer, behind the helm on albums for Country artists like Brett Young, and in the same evening going to write songs for R&B legend Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. After several years and a long list of collaborations, Hopkins set out for Solo success, releasing the self-funded "Vol 1: Here Goes Nothing." The expansive, 14 track album took over 18 months to record, but received a heap of critical praise, and set Hopkins off on over 3 years of touring to support the album. He signed with Universal/Pama Records in 2007, releasing "You are where you come from." In contrast, YAWYCF was recorded in 1 week in a parish church house, in a remote village in Sweden, with Hopkins playing nearly every instrument but drums, the album solidified Hopkins' reputation in Europe as the ultimate showman and songsmith. The first single "Why would god come to LA" landed in the top 20, peaking at #10, and it would be several months till Hopkins returned to the US. Upon his return Hopkins focused on what he knew best, being a sideman and supporting other artists. He landed a gig playing with his dear friend Joe Firstman as a regular guitarist in the house band for Last call with Carson Daly. He would later get a personal call from Carson to be on his latest venture, NBC's hit show The Voice, where he landed a spot on Ceelo's team in season 2. Since then, Hopkins has kept busy touring, producing, while also being a serial Entrepreneur. Since 2009 he helped found Showkicker, a crowdbooking™ platform for live bands, developed a software called Sun Number™, that is used by Zillow to determine solar viability for homes in California and the east coast. He is currently a majority partner in an up and coming on demand Photo service called Commish™, as well as a consultant for several major emerging Cannabis companies in both Oregon and California. Most recently he has began making music on a regular basis, collaborating with grammy winners like Krish Sharma (Rolling Stones), Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow), and many more. With a wildly large catalogue of songs ranging from Country to Dance, it's clear Hopkins moves to the pulse of whatever moves him. He currently lives in Redondo Beach with his wife of 8 years and their young daughter. facebook.com/Justinhopkinsofficial twitter.com/jhopsmusicbox

Waffle On about Children's TV shows Part One Welcome to this months edition of Waffle On. Here we talk about some children's television shows that we watched back in the 1970's. As you will notice that we have put Part One up in the title and that is because we will be doing another one on shows shown in the 1970's and of course the 1980's. There are so many kids shows we could have talked about but we whittled this down to some of our favourites. We also have comments from Antony from the scuttercast, Boz from Here Goes Nothing and emails from Dan Vieira and Cherly Hough. If you loved Mr Ben, Bagpuss, The Flumps and more this show is for you and as always if you don't know these programmes then stay tuned and hopefully you will find something you like and go search for it. Disclaimer: the first 59 seconds of this episode are some of the most intense you'll ever hear on the internet - and of course, they have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show. Elton and Scott invite Boz from the Here Goes Nothing podcast for a Skype chat about Transformers 2 and Guitar Hero. South Park and a Transformer fan-made movie are referenced: links to full videos are in the show notes. Scott introduces Elton to a list of 10 Amazing Last Pictures from Listverse.com. By the way, the boys have started a new podcast about the TV show LOST. Please go visit it. And as always, please use the show notes links and send us feedback.
