Why Not, What If? Georgie Bell and husband Fabrizio Leoni co-founded The Heart Cut, an independent bottler, with an eye towards the world. The question is relatively simple: how can we connect whisky enthusiasts with some of the most exciting, innovative, and deserving-of-attention distilleries? More than half of which - in a telling coincidence - have been Whiskey Ring Podcast guests? Georgie and Fab are globe-trotting whiskey hunters, pulling 16 exceptional casks/releases from distilleries across eight countries in just their first 20-ish months. From Finnish rye to Israeli single malts, they're telling stories through spirits that most drinkers have never encountered. Their approach: direct partnerships, total transparency, and a commitment to showcasing the "why not, what if" spirit of craft distillers around the world. But this isn't just about selling bottles. The Heart Cut is building a whiskey community, breaking down barriers with accessible tasting notes, virtual tastings (starting with the last few releases), and a mission to educate. Bell and Leoni's vision inspires exploration, giving us nerds a healthy mix of whiskies that both represent the heart of what a distillery can do while also pushing its boundaries. If you're new to whisky, you'll be able to enjoy the pours. If you're deep in the fandom, every bit of information they can possibly provide is either on the label or the website. This is an IB built on the knowledge, passion, experience, and wisdom of two people who know their spirits. We spend a few minutes just on Georgie's resume simply to highlight how extensive her knowledge base is - it's that impressive. Finally, I want to acknowledge the introductions Georgie made after the interview was over. The best IBs don't work as firewalls but as gateways. If a bottling makes me want to know more about a distillery, that's the best job an IB can do, and The Heart Cut does it in spades. Who knows - within a few months, I may have completed the collection, having all The Heart Cut partners on the podcast... Being smaller releases, these won't usually be available in the US, but they are through both Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange. I'm picking up a bottle of the M&H (the pomegranate wine cask and Dead Sea Apex release are my two favorites, and The Heart Cut combined them!) and probably 2-5 others given the chance. Thank you to Georgie for entering the Whiskey Ring, and for the multiple introductions she made after the interview! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring The Bottle Share Club - the $25/month Patreon level - is SOLD OUT! This week, following our inaugural appearance on "This Morning", our pod adopts an alternative approach to Burns Night and solves a mystery for those looking to drink something in honour of Hercule Poirot.Burns Night is coming. Let's face it, if it wasn't in January, no-one would take any notice. But after 25 moribund days of ‘meh', celebrating the birthday of an 18th century tax collector with some root vegetables and stomach stuffed with bits of sheep sounds like a brilliant night out. It's not. A clichéd caricature of Scottish-ness, it's tediously quaint, painfully kitsch and all those endless Immortal Memories, those cheesy Addresses to the Lassies; the dreary drone of the bagpipes would have bored the life out of the real Robert Burns. So we suggest some alcoholic alternatives to breathe life back into Burns Night including:Harviestoun Ola Dubh - you can get it the three different expressions, here.Braemble gin Liqueur - Scottish blackberry with English London Dry Gin. £24.89 Master of Malt The Long Bramble 25ml liqueur 100ml ginger ale or tonic Pour the bramble over ice, in a highball, top with ginger ale, garnish with a wedge of lime, squeeze it in first Cross Brew coffee liqueur, £25.74 Master of Malt Cross Brew Negroni 20ml Cross Brew 30ml Campari 30ml Punt e Mes Stir over ice and strain into rocks glass with ice Whisky Deals Mortlach 15 YO for £87.95 Whisky Exchange – saving £32.05 Aberlour 14-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky, £46 Waitrose - save £10 Cardhu, £26, Sainsburys - was £40 Woven Whisky, Experience N.11, Peachy, £55 POIROTAnd then we celebrate a lesser-known milestone - the 103rd anniversary of the first ever Hercule Poirot novel - and honour the "detestable, bombastic, tiresome, egocentric little creep" with a superb Belgian stout.Get Hercule Stout here ________________________________Buy yourself or someone else annual membership (and a signed copy of our award-winning Thinking Drinkers Almanac Book) for just £120 here. 3 x 60ml pouches containing 3 x world class spirits delivered direct through your door every month. This week, we're on location in London for The Whisky Exchange's annual Whisky Show at Old Billingsgate. We'll have interviews from throughout the weekend on WhiskyCast In-Depth, including Diageo's Colin Dunn, Oliver Chilton of Elixir Distillers, and Tomatin's Scott Adamson. Tomatin took home top honors at this week's International Wine and Spirits Competition Awards, and we'll have that story in our news segment along with details on a new record for Kentucky's growing Bourbon barrel inventory. We'll also have tasting notes from the weekend, and in our Behind the Label segment, we'll explain the difference between rejuvenated casks and "STR" casks.
Charles and I discuss why Old Pepper Distillery should not be overlooked when visiting Lexington. We are also extremely excited about the new distillery on Islay named Port-nah-truan. The owners Elixir Distillers, once owners of The Whisky Exchange, are going to have malting floors, direct-fired wash stills and will not only produce single malt but also rum! In this episode of our Dealmaker Podcast series, we talk about the sale of The Whisky Exchange to the world's second-largest wine and spirits seller, Pernod Ricard. Jo Sheerin is joined by Sukhinder Singh, Founder of The Whisky Exchange, and Rob Baxter from KPMG as they discuss the decision to sell the business and the challenges they faced along the way. The Whisky Exchange was founded in 1999, and grew from being a small shop in West London to the internet's number-one specialist retailer of whisky and other spirits, now serving thousands of satisfied customers every week. Sukhinder speaks about his journey from building the initial customer base to dealing with competition from companies like Amazon, and then deciding to sell the business he was passionate about. We go behind the scenes of this exciting deal as Sukhinder and Rob share their experiences of selling the business, and provide useful advice to others considering doing the same.
The Whisky Exchange just named Deanston 18 as the Whisky of the Year 2022. I'm reviewing this Highland Single Malt Scotch for the first time, and I'm discussing news about a new Irish whiskey distillery at the historic Titanic Pump House in Belfast, Suntory's Japanese whiskey price hike, and Qualcomm x Razer's new G3x Dev Kit that's about to change the handheld game! Everyone has questions about whisky. Dr. Nick Morgan knows more about whisky than most people, and his second pandemic-era book has just been published in a partnership with The Whisky Exchange. Everything You Need to Know About Whisky (but are too afraid to ask) answers many of those questions. We'll talk with Nick about his new book, along with his recent Master of Malt blog column on the role some Scotch Whisky makers played in the rise of Japanese whiskies. In the news, Beam Suntory is entering the direct-to-consumer whisky business, while Beam's Freddie Noe has written a new chapter in his Little Book series of whiskies. There's also a new chapter in the Parker's Heritage Collection series of whiskies, while a couple of upstarts are starting their own histories in the whiskey world.

As it's Summer time, we thought it was only right to dive into the exciting world of refreshing Whiskey Cocktails… so we chose one of the easiest to make (because life's too short to mess around with hard stuff) in the form of a Kentucky Derby classic, the Mint Julep.
