Why Your Bank Might Be Funding Climate Chaos – And What You Can Do About It In this eye-opening detour from our usual plant-powered chat, I'm diving into a topic that affects every one of us: where our money sleeps at night. Spoiler alert – if it's with a major UK bank, it might be financing the very fossil fuel projects threatening to blow our climate goals to smithereens. I'll share my own journey from Morgan Chase to a more ethical option, and break down some jaw-dropping figures from a Guardian investigation. We're talking £75 billion in dirty investments, greenwashing galore, and carbon bombs so big they could derail the global effort to stay below 1.5°C of warming. This isn't about guilt-tripping. It's about waking up to the power in our pockets. If you're already cutting carbs and counting macros for the planet, this is your next step. Your bank might be doing more environmental damage than your diet ever could.

The Secrets Behind Successful Public Art with Sherry Dobbin

Ceri interviews Sherry Dobbin, a cultural strategist whose work spans continents and iconic spaces. From starting in theatre to transforming Times Square, Sherry shares how she crafts meaningful cultural experiences that change how we engage with public spaces. She reveals the secrets behind successful public art, innovative funding models and her approach to helping people engage and not feel intimidated by public art. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sherry's journey began in theatre, where she learned to embody multiple perspectives through mask work, establishing her passion for crafting environments where people can explore and connect. Successful public art needs three levels of engagement: aesthetic appeal that draws in the casual observer, deeper resonance for those knowledgeable about art and dialogue with important contemporary issues. Creating clear frames or visual cues in public spaces helps people understand how to engage with art, allowing them to feel confident rather than confused or intimidated. Sherry advocates for meeting people where they are by providing simple instructions about what to do rather than what not to do, giving audiences the confidence to engage with even the most challenging art. Developing cultural spaces in commercial developments can work when both parties understand value beyond direct financial transactions, arts organisations bring people, energy and identity to developments. Cultural organisations should rethink funding models by considering their total operational needs rather than focusing on rigid categories, opening up to partnerships where both parties maintain integrity while addressing shared interests. When developing cultural spaces, look to the youngest creators to understand future trends, focus on how artists create rather than what they create to anticipate evolving needs. Embracing ‘healthy naivete’ allows for innovation, asking questions and trying approaches that go against expectations can lead to breakthroughs when done with respect and genuine curiosity. BEST MOMENTS "That early understanding of occupying different spaces and identities has shaped her lifelong passion for crafting environments where people can explore, question and connect." "I was much better at taking really great directors and artists and helping them to push themselves, to think further, or how to support the work, or how to come up with solutions for them." "Being able to find alternative realities is how we can help to see solutions to problems." "It's this delicate balance between something being finite enough and clear enough you can focus on it, but it still allows this infinite number of ways in which it can be interpreted." "A lot of it is about giving instructions about what you want people to do. Don't put up don'ts. Everything can turn into an invitation." "Don't assume old sponsorship models anymore, people are really looking towards this matchmaking idea." "Cultural organisations are not the only entities that get free rent in commercial properties. So stop apologising for it and start understanding how you bring something to them." Let's Talk Dog Business

In this episode, Jo & Vicky discuss why getting out of your comfort zone is essential when running a dog business. Why do you need to push yourself to learn how to run a business professionally, start charging what you are worth, invest in your education by getting a mentor, and surround yourself with people who will help you grow?   KEY TAKEAWAYS Most self-employed people and sole traders have zero business training. Even people who have held senior corporate positions only have a limited understanding of what it takes to run an independent business. Winging it will only take your business so far.  Be patient with yourself don´t try something once, and then immediately give up because you think it hasn´t worked. Flitting from one thing to another is a sure way to waste your energy and resources. Always think about whether what you are planning to do will fit in with your long-term bigger picture. There is no need to feel uncomfortable about charging a decent amount for the service you provide. People are coming to you because they can´t do it themselves, they need your expertise. It is not your job to second guess how much someone can afford, you need to set your rate and stick to it unless you are running a promotion. Give value by providing the basics for free. Choosing someone to teach you everything you need to know is far more efficient than trying to learn things piecemeal.   BEST MOMENTS “That job didn't teach me the skills that I needed to be a business owner.” “It's a good comparison…. we are like, little reactive dogs.” “Business is a journey. The same way as you learning about dog behaviour is a journey"   SOCIALS AND IMPORTANT LINKS https://www.tiktok.com/@letstalkdogbusiness https://www.youtube.com/@LetsTalkDogBusiness Website www.caninebusinessacademy.com Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caninebusinessacademycommunity/ ABOUT THE HOSTS Meet Jo and Vicky! Today's episode of the Serviced Accommodation Podcast is all about turning guesthouses, B&Bs and hotels into apart-hotels. Something that Mark Hodgkiss has already done several times, so the information in this podcast is like gold dust. It includes how to source properties, convince owners to sell, structure an exchange with a delayed completion deal, finance it, complete the transformation, and run the business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Turning hotels and B&Bs into serviced accommodation (SA), should not be the first SA deal you do. B&Bs are typically found in central locations, undervalued and there are not many buyers. Adding rooms and improving the quality of the rooms can easily double profitability. Locals typically view this type of development favourably. Apart hotels are not 100% hands-off, but they are easier to run than you think. Adding kitchenettes makes them more attractive. You don´t have to necessarily wait until the business is put up for sale. Mark explains how to approach owners and put a business proposition to them that is hard to resist.  BEST MOMENTS ‘That will result in almost doubling of the business.' ‘It´s not set and forget, but it´s getting easier.' ‘If you can offer the tools to be able to fulfil what they need out of the sale you are in a good position.' David shares his extraordinary journey in the world of boxing, from his early days in Liverpool to his success in the amateurs and the Olympics. However, he also opens up about the setbacks and adversity he faced, including back-to-back losses to Tony Thompson, who later failed a drugs test. David discusses the emotional toll of these experiences and the challenges he had to overcome. Despite the hardships, David reflects on his career with pride and gratitude, highlighting the importance of resilience and mental strength in the face of adversity. KEY TAKEAWAYS David Price faced adversity throughout his boxing career, including setbacks and doubts about his abilities. However, he persevered and found motivation in the respect and admiration he gained from his success in the sport. Both David Price and Anthony Ogogo experienced setbacks in their boxing careers that affected their mental health. Price struggled with depression and anxiety after losses, while Ogogo faced a mental block and fear of getting hit after being stopped in a fight. The unfairness of facing opponents who failed drug tests was a bitter experience for David Price. He felt robbed of opportunities and the advantages that performance-enhancing drugs can provide in training and during fights. Both Price and Ogogo emphasized the importance of mental health support in boxing. They acknowledged that seeking help from sports psychologists or therapists can be beneficial in dealing with the pressures and challenges of the sport. Despite the setbacks and challenges, both Price and Ogogo have found success and have transitioned into new careers after retiring from boxing. They have earned respect from their peers and have built financial stability through investments and business ventures. BEST MOMENTS "That was how desperate I was... I wondered if I could get my tongue cut off so it won't hurt when I'm punching." "I mourned my career like I'd lost a sibling... They're the worst, worst, worst people." "The worst part was when I initially found out... It was a sore subject for a while." "They must feel like they can run through walls... It really is disgusting." "I regressed for a couple of years... Every time I got hit with a jab, even with a jab, my legs would wobble." HOST BIO Olympic medal-winning boxer, Anthony Ogogo, teetered on the brink of a world title before a career-ending eye injury left him mostly blind in one eye. Battling years of depression, he reinvented himself as a professional wrestler with All Elite Wrestling in America. Almost everyone worries. From niggling concerns to full-on, sleep-crippling, progress-crushing hand-wringing, we are all sidetracked and stymied by possible disastrous outcomes that may happen or may not happen. Neil gives his take on worry and the futility of constantly considering future catastrophes and some alternatives to this drain on your time.  KEY TAKEAWAYS If we are fixated on future events we rob ourselves of the joy of the present moment.  Worrying is a habit that gains us nothing. While we are worrying, we cannot deal with current problems and make long-term plans. You may begin to expect things to go wrong. Worry solidifies the expectation of failure.  BEST MOMENTS‘That dismal, catastrophic future burns all our time and energy that we have right now that we could be better using to create different future outcomes.'‘Very often the flip side of worrying is that we can become so over-awed by what we've worried into existence in our own mind that we become paralysed by it.'‘Write down your current assessment of the reality that you're dealing with. Take a little time and write down your worst-case outcome, the very thing you've worried into existence.' ‘Block some time in and mark it ‘worry hour'. Providing examples to help you to grow into someone who performs to a high level in all areas of your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is good to stretch yourself by spending time outside of your comfort zone. But to avoid burnout most people need to take the occasional break. Having a sense of purpose is at the heart of longevity. Everyone has different strengths, talents, and skills. Identify yours, play to them, and nurture them. Always do the best that you can with the resources that you have available to you, at that moment. Stop competing against others. Instead, compete with yourself to become better than you were yesterday. Integrity matters, be genuine and consistent. Be humble enough to listen to and learn from others. Ask for feedback.  Taking that first small step creates massive momentum. BEST MOMENTS ‘That sense of purpose gives you its own energy supply, it gives you a sense of direction,' ‘Stop comparing your behind-the-scenes footage to somebody else's highlight reels.' ‘Integrity matters, as a species we do not follow hypocrites.' ‘Everybody's clever in different ways. A second in the series about what you can do, inside and outside of production, to get your podcast to sound the best it can! Dan, a senior audio producer at Progressive Media joins Ash again to give tips on what you can do after you stop recording to make your content sound great. KEY TAKEAWAYS Listen back to your audio, what you have recorded, before sending them to be edited. Test recordings are useful so you can discover any issues straight away. If you make a mistake, ensure you pause after and recollect yourself to make editing it out seamless. Don't worry about editing out uhms and ahs and ‘fillers' of conversation so much, it's unnecessary and can often make the flow of the audio sound unnatural. Small mistakes are fine, they make your content feel casual and more relatable to your audience. People don't realise the importance of mixing and mastering your audio, it is often taken for granted. If your content doesn't sound good audibly, then people assume that your content isn't good either. Recording remotely isn't always your first choice but one of the most important things you can do to give it the best chance of sounding good is for you and your guest to use headphones. Do not use your built in laptop microphone, even airpods inbuilt mics are better! BEST MOMENTS “That little uhm in there is not detrimental to the conversation” “If you take that relatability out of it you sterilise it and run the risk of people being alienated from your content” “It's not just about the raw audio, it's about how that audio is processed” “No single podcast I have edited has gone out with no form of processing in terms of mixing and mastering in there” “Be wary of the internet connection you are using” VALUABLE RESOURCES Podcast Production - The Cost of the Wrong Choice How to Launch a Number 1 Podcast - Part 1 Free Podcast Workshop https://tinyurl.com/Pod-Help ABOUT THE HOSTS Kane Baron, Ashley Morris & Thom Luter manage over 150 live podcasts Including Rob Moore, Kevin Clifton, Shaa Wasmand MBE & more. Helping Entrepreneurs Launch, Scale & Monetise their podcast for over 6 years. In this episode, Dr Irene and Dr Brown talk about all things sleep, including beginning Restful Sleep MD, how sleep affects your health, the different phases of sleep, children's sleep, the role of mindfulness, herbal remedies and sleep ‘hacks', and the effect of modern devices and medicines on healthy sleep.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Dr Brown started Restful Sleep MD to help high-achieving women run at full speed without feeling exhausted from unsatisfactory sleep caused by depression, burnout and anxiety.   Research makes it clear that sleep impacts almost every area of our lives. Studies even show inadequate sleep can affect your heart health, as it causes hypertension, damages our immune system and our mental health.  Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep has been divided into three stages, the first is a light drowsy transition to sleep, the second is when memory consolidation takes place and the third is deep sleep where recovery, restoration and biological functions such as growth hormones being released occur.  Dr Brown's expertise also includes parenting strategies to help restful sleep in children, freeing up parents from interrupted sleep caused by wakeful children.   The research on supplements is inconclusive and more likely a deficiency in our regular diet is to blame for sleeplessness. Valerian root and Melatonin cannot help you with the base psychological causes of insomnia.  30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, turn off all your bright screened devices as your brain interprets this light as day time and does not activate your sleep as a response to darkness.  Alcohol causes very disrupted sleep despite the fact it can help you fall asleep. In response we often use caffeine during the day and this can cause a vicious circle. BEST MOMENTS ‘That then made me create this business that is really focused on delving into what is going on with your sleep as a Mom, you're exhausted. As an organisation what is going on with your employees? Their performance is declining. We talk a lot about wellness but we are really not implementing it when sleep comes into play.' – Dr Brown  ‘It's really your passion and I can see it's very rewarding for you because you have obviously given your heart and patients have actually received the treatment and obviously can see the fruits of the treatment that you have given.' – Dr Irene   ‘The idea is to have a basically good representation of each stage. When it comes to that, what's the percentage?' – Dr Brown  ‘Is your mind full or are you mindful? If you think about it, many times we are so busy, we are running all day, we are exhausted and we just go straight into bed. We would assume that we would be able to sleep but we are not because our mind starts to race.' – Dr Brown ‘You want to make sure you optimise your environment. Make sure your environment is dark. Find a way to promote that melatonin. Number two is to make it quiet or noise free and the third is to make it cool.' – Dr Brown  ‘You have to be willing to partner and be engaged in the process knowing that there is incredible long term gain, but it will take some effort.' – Dr Brown  VALUABLE RESOURCES Join Patreon : http://www.patreon.com/drireneching Instagram: irene.ching.777 Tiktok: @ireneching777 Youtube channel: Dr Irene Ching Twitter: @ireneching7777 Clubhouse: @ireneching1 https://www.facebook.com/irene.ching.735 LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/irene-ching-742623219 ABOUT THE GUESTDr Funke Afolabi-Brown is a board-certified sleep physician, speaker, coach, and consultant. Free Training: https://www.tonyandnickivee.com/free-training-link-page(Only available to the end of Feb) As Valentine's day fast approaches, relationship expert and force of nature that is known as Nicki Vee, sits down to talk with Caroline. Together, they unpick the very nature of masculine and feminine relationships. Including why sex on a first date spells disaster. Nicki also discloses how her own painful relationship experience proved to be invaluable in the creation of her women's coaching program.  Please join Caroline and Nicki to look at life and relationships through a different lens. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being the best person you can be, regardless of what is happening in your life, is the key to finding and enjoying a good relationship. If you are in a bad place, you will attract the type of person who is also in a bad place. Never think you can change someone or solve their problems. If you feel you need to do that, you are not going to have a healthy, fulfilling relationship. Stop walking around on eggshells, be yourself. If the other person can't handle that, you are in the wrong relationship. Women can look after themselves and do anything they want. But that does not mean that you need to ignore the instinct to have a relationship with someone that makes you feel secure and cared for. Letting a man take care of you does not mean giving up your independence, it is about being open to him being there to help, which enhances your life. Don't compromise and continue with a bad relationship because you don't like being alone. Allow your femininity to come out. It is a part of who you are, when you stop suppressing it you become comfortable in your own skin again. BEST MOMENTS ‘That doesn't mean you go from being independent to dependent on him and give up all your rights. It just means that he wants to enhance what is still your life´ ‘You've got to get rid of that desperation.' ‘The problem is we're going against nature when it comes to intimate relationships.' ‘They (your ideal partner) are there, and they will come to you once you have come to you.' Nicki created her single women's program called ‘Let Him Find You' which has proven to be the best advice a woman can get to attract her perfect partner. In this episode, Kenneth sits down to discuss green coffee grading with Mark Inman of Sustainable Harvest. The duo weaves through the ins and outs of the green coffee grading process - what matters and what doesn't, why it is important, and the impact it has on the way your coffee tastes. Mark and Kenneth share a few insider tips, for example, how to tell if a hole in the bean is a defect or rather a result of a natural process, which does not negatively impact the taste. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sustainable Harvest focuses on having a relationship with coffee farmers. They tend to buy from them every year. Some buyers want pristine beans. Others are happy with much, much lower grades. Appearance plays a role in coffee grading e.g., peaberries. Mark lists out and explains the primary defects, including foreign objects, sours and insect damage. There are primary and secondary defects. Mark explains what they are and how their presence impacts the grading process and ultimately the taste in the cup. Mis-shaped or chipped beans tend to roast unevenly. In Mexico, chipped beans are used to produce 'grinder coffee'. The fact that there are ways to use lower-grade beans helps to make coffee more sustainable. BEST MOMENTS ‘That sense of permanence enables us to invest in training, in project work on behalf of the client. ´ ‘For specialty grade coffees, you can't have any primary defects involved.' ‘When you see a preponderance of floaters or Quakers, it´s usually poor wet processing.' E311: “What's Important to You After You Die ” - Ryan Lindner Interview

Fire in The Belly

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 26, 2022 80:26

Are you truly living your life in a way that matches up with what you want it to be? Today's guest, Ryan Lindner, experienced two serious cardiac episodes at a young age. After falling unconscious sometimes even with clients, he realized how important it was for him to understand his own energy and how to manage and care for it. It's hard *not* to redefine your life after an event like that, and Ryan made it his mission to help others figure out what truly matters to them so that they could live each day, each moment, present and appreciative of their lives. There truly is no time to waste.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Think about who you are if you don't list your resume. And if you don't know, explore that. If you do, explore it more.  We're all just here for a short time. People say life is short all the time, I know that. But again, you don't reflect that in your daily life.We make choices that don't reflect that. And that's all life is – it's all a series of choices you've made about what is and is not important to you. Every day can be an experiment in trial and error, every day can be a redo. If you find yourself getting trapped in a spiral of your own negative self-talk, try to treat yourself as you would a friend. It takes time but you can grow out of the habit.  Most people gravitate towards familiarity; rejection is not a comfortable feeling. So what do they do, they're gonna go back to the safety of familiarity. And that's why a lot of people don't take those big risks that are really necessary to learn. BEST MOMENTS   “That's all time management is – managing your own energy. When I had to manage my energy after going through a trauma, I didn't have time for the “problems”; I didn't have time to worry about those types of things. My life dramatically shifted after that and [my coaching] sessions shifted as well.” “If you believe that you're stuck, and you don't have time, then that's true.” “Every day is a redo. And that's the sort of grace that you can extend to yourself, not just other people.” “Lately, I've been trying to help this stray cat. She's so tiny and hungry. I've been trying to – I don't know what I'm doing, really. But I look at her, and I just think  “I wonder what her life is like” –  you know, she doesn't have anyone, she probably has never been touched. [There's]  something beautiful, like, trying to have a relationship with this cat, to where there's trust, and I think I feel more at peace, you know, fulfilling my purpose working with a stray cat, then I would, at any career endeavor. There's just something you know, just beautiful about being there with life.”  ABOUT THE GUEST  Ryan Lindner is a personal development specialist who has worked as a behavioral coach for clients and organizations worldwide. After two sudden, unexplained cardiac arrests at a young age, he began to explore with clients the different perspectives that come with any profound, life-changing event.  If you aren't living, you're dying. It wasn't uncommon for Ryan to teeter on unconsciousness even, at times, while working with a client, which required him to prioritize his energy and time. He learned how to assist clients to do the same. Ryan enjoys his time with his family and animals. He finds peace near his favorite spots by the beach.  CONTACT METHOD  Ryan's website: https://rslindner.com/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-lindner-96802266/ On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RyanLindnerCoaching/ Ryan's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ryanlindnercoaching/ Buy Ryan's book, “The Half Lived Life”, on Indiebound https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781646636433 ABOUT THE HOST  The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton' from the ‘Mighty 247' company is your main host of ‘Fire in The Belly'.  Pete is an entrepreneur, mentor, coach, property Investor, and father of three beautiful girls. Understand that your life needs to exist outside of your job Emotional intelligence is just as important as experiential and academic experience, and emotional intelligence *is* a skill that can be learned and practiced.  Work backwards, but not in terms of a project, from the end of your life. What would you wish you had done differently? Work from that place of knowledge. How can we re-invent leadership to understand intrinsic motivation? How can we harness the lessons that we as a world have learned the past few years to help make work more meaningful and filled with purpose?   BEST MOMENTS   "That's where good leadership comes in, I think -- not just using carrots and sticks, but really getting to know their people and leading with a sense of personal motivation and compassion. ... You only learn over time that it's about the journey and not the destination." "Writing a second book was better for me as a person. It helped me focus on, you know 'what does bring you joy'." "Nobody says 'gee I wish I bought a nicer car' or 'I wish I'd gotten a better raise or promotion.' We need to remap."  "The Great Resignation is happening amongst those leaders who aren't modern leaders. ... In this episode, we have a returning guest who appeared back in July 2019 (Episode 36). Jeff Quartermaine is the MD & CEO of Perseus Mining who are a rapidly growing, West African gold producer, developer, and explorer who currently operate 3 gold mines in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. Jeff has been with Perseus for over 12 years and has more than 30 years of experience in senior corporate, financial, and strategic management roles with ASX and TSX-listed resources companies involving operations in Australia, as well as countries in the Asia Pacific, South America, and West Africa. Jeff gives us an update on the tremendous progress the company has achieved over the last 2.5 years and what the outlook is for the company over the next few years.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite CoVid Perseus has been able to finish the construction of their 3rd mine (Yaouré), ahead of schedule and under budget. They have built 2 successful mines, in the past 4 years. In December 2021, they poured the first gold at Yaouré and started commercial production in March 2021. During the remainder of 2021, they produced 199,000 ounces from Yaouré. The Yaouré Gold Mine and area has far more minerals than anticipated. Currently, the company is producing half a million ounces of gold, per year, with between 300 and 400 million in cashflow Over the next 10 years they are planning to grow by exploring and possibly via acquisitions. Mining in Africa holds challenges because there is a lot of competition for land and in some places rogue miners to deal with. Due to difficult geo-politics both the Saudi and Namibian shields are under-explored. But conditions are now right for extensive exploration to start.   BEST MOMENTS ‘That rapid increase got us to 199,000 ounces in calendar 21. ´ ‘It looks very much to me that we will be mining at Yaouré for many years to come.' ‘We are very resilient, we don´t get knocked off course easily.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://perseusmining.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/perseus-mining-limited Twitter: https://twitter.com/perseusmining Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PerseusMiningOfficial/ Previous Episode (36) with Jeff Quartermaine: https://backtracks.fm/discover/s/dig-deep-the-mining-podcast-podcast/c3e27a531b2932b7/e/jeff-quartermaine-of-the-challenges-of-mining/f8801451b981d0c5?primaryColor=%232DDBAD&theme=light   VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos   ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. After watching Pete Thomas' “Finding Jack Charlton”, a comprehensive and detailed biographical documentary of the legendary football manager, Rob finds himself inspired to share some of the lessons Jack has learned through his extraordinary life. One of the standout lessons being you don't have to be abrasive to be an effective leader but you do need to be firm.   KEY TAKEAWAYS To lead you have to express your own beliefs and values and have these actioned and followed throughout your team, organisation or business.  This does not require you to be detached and distant however. You can still show care for your people and guide them gently and considerately. Keep your message simple and direct. People tend to avoid complexity so avoid over complicating concepts and issues. Try to focus on the positive traits in peoples characters and skills and overlook as much as possible any negativity that can be considered a triviality. Ignore minor irritants that crop up in your relationship with your team. BEST MOMENTS   ‘That was one of Jack's maxims. He was by definitions simple and direct.' ‘We don't look for complexity. We have complexity thrust upon us by our society.' ‘The superpower of kindness. That's what Jack had in bucketloads.' ‘He created a team spirit by allowing people to be who they were.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES   Leader Manager Coach Podcast      ABOUT THE HOST   Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. The Educational Benefits and Unexpected Opportunities to Podcasting – Speaking with Colin Nottage, Host of The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast

The more you speak to people the more you learn! A podcast can present unique opportunities, for guests, listeners and hosts alike! In this episode, Kane speaks to consultant, chair, tutor and host of The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast Colin Nottage. They discuss the reasons behind the success of Colin's podcast, how podcasting can produce a wealth of other opportunities as well as the impact it has had on Colin's life, business and the H&S industry as a whole. KEY TAKEAWAYS Colin started listening to podcasts himself, including Rob Moore's The Disruptive Entrepreneur. He discovered that there was very few in the health and safety podcasting space and after attending one of the first Progressive Podcast Courses he got started. When Colin first started his podcast, his aim was to give back to the audience that had supported him. He knew he has quite a small niche but started to think about how he could scale and this is when he began interviewing guests. By interviewing great guests, Colin started learning more about the health and safety space which is not something he expected. As well as giving him new knowledge, it kept his passion and inspiration alive and he was able to deliver both of these things to his audience and his clients. The content Colin is putting out is providing a real benefit across his industry, excerpts from his episodes have been used in training and he has won awards too. One of the things Colin has learnt from doing his podcast, is that changing the culture of a business and industry has a lot more scope to impact things than talking to individual people. The quality of guests you speak to improves the more people you speak to. Colin also finds this is the case in his business. You might start small but there is an effect that compounds over time the more people you speak to and interview. So many people suffer from imposter syndrome and don't believe they or their niche has enough value for podcasting but Colin and The Interesting Health and Safety Podcast shows how wrong this impression is. Consistency to podcasting is very important. Colin always advises to keep a ‘bank' of reserved content for any unforeseen circumstances to allow his podcast to always publish. Collaboration is better than competition. Colin has demonstrated this by collaborating with fellow H&S Podcaster James MacPherson. They have worked together and built the first H&S community and educational tool for the industry, Project Mollitiam: https://www.projectmollitiam.com/meet-the-team Colin has big plans for the future! Including writing a book, more monetisation of the podcast, going on a coaching course and building his website.   BEST MOMENTS “That was the thing that really changed it for me, when I started interviewing people” “I've got a real loyal following, that's a nice thing” “There's an awful lot of things that can be done remotely” “When I interview people, I'm now asking better questions” “The biggest art of interviewing is listening” “The amount of times I wish I'd never stopped the record button” VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449        https://www.projectmollitiam.com/meet-the-team Website Instagram ABOUT THE GUEST Colin Nottage Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into industry. Colin works at a strategic level with company owners and board members. He helps business leaders establish and achieve their health and safety ambitions. Colin also runs a company that vets contractors online and a network that develops and support H&S consultancies to become better businesses. Colin chairs the Construction Dust Partnership, an industry collaboration directly involving many organisations, including the Health and Safety Executive. If anyone is saying they can predict a crash then they are either lying or misguided. What is the relationship between being a dancer and being a singer? The training for both is so segregated, but should it be? Host Alexa Terry is joined on this week's episode of the Singing Teachers Talk by osteopath and former ballet dancer and singer, Jennie Morton. Find out about the work Jennie does with her clients in LA. KEY TAKEAWAYS A dancer is trained to keep their belly in and tense, whereas a singer is told to relax it and let it out. This disconnect can present challenges for dancers who want to learn how to sing. Jennie teaches students who trained as dancers to change the way they breathe as sucking your abs in (as dancers typically do) prevents the diaphragm from going all the way down. Most dancers are trained to do things on an inhale. If you can correct this to an exhale then the body is in a stable but relaxed state. Muscles work in pairs, it's a push and pull relationship. This can also be seen as a stabilising relationship where if one over works then the other has to work harder to balance it, if not you'll fall over. People can get very locked into their own technique and over-think every process. While technique is important, it's just the scaffolding to our voice so don't obsess over it. The muscle memory will be there, let your brain let go and be creative.   BEST MOMENTS "That was my Pavlovian conditioning when I stepped on stage"  "It's about stability and rigidity"  "The body will always do the most efficient thing" "What show on Earth do you stand on a postage stamp and sing?!" How do you actually make money as an artist? Where can you sell your art and who are you selling it to? How can you make money in other ways? These are just some of the questions Ping, Sarah, and Dorien will be answering this week on the Thriving Women Artists podcast. Not every revenue generator is right for everyone, so listen in to discover what might be the best fit for you and your art.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Dorien sees commissions and assignments as different things. Commissions are art you do for clients and are usually more creative. An assignment is more like a logo for a client or something similar. Ping sells her products direct to consumers and wholesale to shops, the two have different price points. Print on demand is where you upload your illustration online and you choose how you want it to be printed and what on. The platform then prints it off once an order has been received by a customer. The advantage is that you don't need to invest in stock or packaging for this but you would typically only get 10% to 15% of the money. You can licence your work too. For example allowing a company or brand to use your artwork for a specified amount of time. You can also sell your art or photography in the form of stock imagery. Teaching art is another way you can make cash. Sarah teaches online workshops, which is good because you can work with anyone anywhere, but you do lose that face to face contact. She also teaches workshops hosted by someone else in their space and she takes a percentage fee. Dorien has started teaching at an art education institute one evening a week. All of the facilities and invoicing are set by the institute but the curriculum is hers to decide. YouTube can be a way to make money from advertising if you have a way you can transfer your art to the style of the platform. Online you can make a percentage profit using affiliate links where you are promoting someone else's product or services. Sarah has made money from being an influencer, a company sends her products to use or promote and she charges them a fee. You can also enter your art into competitions and if you're good and lucky then you can earn a little money doing it. Obviously one of the big ways to make money would be to sell your art to a gallery, either originals or prints.   BEST MOMENTS ‘That being done by someone else can save a lot of stress' ‘If you make a plan and you fail, then you can try again and again' ‘It's important to see what ways of making money fit you'   ABOUT THE PODCAST A serious and fun podcast for female creatives hosted by Ping, Dorien and Sarah, three happy artists from Amsterdam.  This podcast will inspire you to make a living out of your art. Discover more inspirational teachings that you can apply to your leadership style and lifestyle, as spoken by Eknath Easwaran, a spiritual author and teacher. Rob discusses the importance of having a focus, your responsibilities as a trustee and how a great leader helps themselves and their team bring out their unique abilities.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Remember to always have a focus within your team and with yourself. That focus should be to help everybody to become independent to find the peaceful place within themselves that helps them perform. This comes down to the thought process around culture and the thought process around the environment. If you can be the facilitator in your leadership capacity, as the one who creates a culture that brings people to an optimum mental state, then you have achieved and done an amazing thing. You are not responsible for your team members because everybody is responsible for themselves. However, you do have a responsibility as a leader because you are a trustee and there are things expected of you. Always remember that when you feel tired, people are waiting for words of encouragement and inspiration. As a coach remember you have to balance strength and support. At times you have to say no and stand by your vision. Other times, you may have to support people through a certain tough period to achieve a result. There will be words that you speak, things that you talk about and things that you believe in that you will be tested on, to see if you still stand by them. Are you fundamentally at your core, the character that you portray? It may seem that this test is beneficial for everybody else, but that test is only for you and it is part of the process. You are unique. You have unique talents and abilities, there are things that you are great at and things that you excel at and so does everybody around you. Part of the skill of being a great leader is helping yourself and helping others to bring those qualities out. BEST MOMENTS “That's an environment that you can do something from.” “Words are powerful. What we say impacts our minds, impacts others and can have the most devastating effects and the most phenomenal effects.” “We might have felt like we had achieved something but actually, long term you had probably messed things up.” “ Part of the skill of being a great leader is helping yourself and helping others to bring those qualities.”  VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast The Stoic Art of Living: Inner Resilience and Outer Results - Tom Morris     ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. In this episode, we chat to Nick Bridgen, Chief Executive at Ferro-Alloy Resources, who is developing a giant vanadium deposit in southern Kazakhstan.   Nick is a chartered accountant by background and also studied a degree in Psychology, Statistics, and Physics. His career has been in executive management within the resources industry. So, he is well versed in developing Ferro Alloy Resources to its full potential. Helped by the fact that he has worked in Kazakhstan for an extended period of time. We talk about the exisitng operations and the huge project they are developing.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   The firm is already profitable and well-funded but there is much, much more to come. 95% of their vanadium assets have not been touched yet. They have already secured all of the funding they need to develop the vanadium extraction side of their business. Ferro-Alloy Resources can extract their vanadium without a concentrator roaster. This means much lower capital and operation costs, which makes them highly competitive. The site already has power, roads, and a nearby workforce. They estimate that by spending about $100 million on phase 1 they will eventually turn over $2 billion across both phases. Vanadium is used to strengthen steel and demand is growing. Where weight is not important, vanadium flow batteries are an attractive proposition. Kazakhstan is now a well-run country, that has actively worked to make mining easier. The by-products the firm is planning to produce, and sell are expected to more than pay for the vanadium production costs. The firm´s small pilot plant has enabled them to develop the expertise they will need to extract the huge reserves of vanadium that they have. Their small pilot plant enabled them to discover that concentrate processing is also highly profitable. They are also currently upgrading and expanding their concentrates processing business. The feasibility study is due to be released in the first half of next year.     BEST MOMENTS ‘That could increase the demand for vanadium by 50 or even 100%. ´ ‘We will be able to take advantage of the growth in demand of the world and supply it at a cost that doesn't kill that demand.' ‘We are now fully funded.' Today Zoe speaks with Maya from the Instagram account @caribbeansnowflake about the tragic loss of her son Leo at 12 days old and her journey to becoming a mum for a second time via IVF to her son Freddie. Maya has incredible strength and resilience to endure what she has had to go through as a mother, but she has always tried to live her life filled with gratitude and positivity and this shines through in the way she talks about her trauma.     KEY TAKEAWAYS   Maya met her husband on a ski trip and at first didn't even like each other! But they met again and discovered they had a lot in common and the rest is history. Both Maya's pregnancy and labour with Leo was quite straightforward and normal. Living in the Cayman Island her pregnancy and birth was Dr lead, but this is standard. It was only the Monday after the birth when Leo wasn't feeding well and the Dr thought he was looking a bit weak that they started running tests and put Leo on a feeding tube in the nicu.   The long days and nights waiting for a diagnosis were extremely hard and difficult for Maya and her husband. You aren't supposed to be apart from your baby. After many scans and test they still did not know what was wrong with Leo and he was going downhill fast, the Drs had to incubate him and were recommending that they took him to Miami – they were told at best he would be severely disabled. Once they arrived in Miami Leo had more tests and he was finally diagnosed with a severe case of NKH, which is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation. It is very rare but is terminal and severely affects quality of life. After having the diagnosis, they made the difficult decision to turn off Leo's life support, it was devastating. The aftermath of Leo's death was heartbreaking and traumatic but Maya and her husband really wanted to bring another baby home in the future. They underwent genetic testing on themselves and discovered they would have a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with NKH. They chose to go down the IVF route so that all their embryos could be genetically tested. Knowing that it wasn't the end of the road helped them with their grief. They had one genetically clear embryo, they had this transplanted successfully and 9 months later they had their son Freddie.     BEST MOMENTS   “That was probably the shittest night of my life”   “There can't be anything wrong with him, look how perfect he is”   “Your brain can't process all that information at once”   “It was his gift to us that they all got to meet him”   "It helped with the grief knowing it wasn't the end of the road"    VALUABLE RESOURCES No Matter What: https://www.amazon.co.uk/No-Matter-What-DebiGliori/dp/1408850001/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=no+matter+what&qid=1623171787&sr=8-1 www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org www.arc-uk.org www.sands.org.uk       ABOUT THE GUEST Maya IG: @caribbeansnowflake IG: @makingittomotherhood         ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. Alex Stemplewski: Viral TikTok Sensation (10 MILLION Followers in Less Than a Year)

TikTok is the new social media platform that has taken the world by storm. Once a platform exclusively used by dancers and teenagers, learn today how you can utilise the platform to grow your business empire. Rob is joined by Alex Stemplewski a TikTok sensation who quit his office job to become a full-time content creator with almost 11 million TikTok followers. Today Alex shares his formula for creating a viral video, how to create quality content and how to monetize TikTok.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Platforms will always start with a small group in mind. Eventually, the platform's audience will broaden and it will become for everyone. Originally TikTok was for dancers and teenagers but slowly and surely it has become for everyone. At this point, you could be doing anything on TikTok, go viral and build up a following.   You have to be consistent. It is better to post something than to not post anything. Strive to make the content as high quality as possible. The production quality does not necessarily translate to a good video, if the concept isn't viral then the video will flop. If you have a good message to put out there, that video can do really well even if it was filmed on an iphone.   Quality content is content that resonates with audiences and that creates engagement that allows the algorithm to pick that video and make it go viral. Becoming viral is the hard part. Be intentional and formulate your videos so that you know they will perform well. Post so often that you start to piece together your own formula for a viral video.    The TikTok creator fund essentially pays you per view on your video, on a video that gets 4 million views, you would make $100-$200. The majority of TikTok creators monetization comes from brand deals. This is when brands would like to showcase their product or service using the creator's video. This is essentially advertising on behalf of the brand. One other way to monetize TikTok is by Audio Promos. This is where a musician approaches you to demo their new track in your TikTok video for a fee.   When you receive criticism on your videos ask yourself “Why do I need to waste my time responding to that comment?” Don't allow that comment to waste your time. Ignore the hate and let them swing their punches at nothing, eventually, they will tire out. Let them go otherwise it will result in a waste of mental energy.   To create a personal brand means that people have an understanding of what you are all about. Your audience has an in-depth understanding of who you are; what your message is and the ability to recognize your true authentic self.   Disruptive means to break down a pattern and anything that people expect. To be disruptive is to interrupt the way people think something is going to go and shock them with a new way of doing things.   BEST MOMENTS “That's when everything changed, the day I got my camera.”   “I want to take it to the next level. I have a very big vision.”   “It's a free app, it doesn't owe you anything, you need to work for those views and make better content, stop complaining.”   “A brand deal for a creator of my size can be 5 figures.”   CONTACT METHOD Rob's official website: https://robmoore.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/robmooreprogressive/?ref=br_rs LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/robmoore1979 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Today Zoe speaks to Becky Kearns, also known as the defining mum! Becky shares her journey into parenthood which resulted in using donor eggs to conceive her three beautiful girls. Zoe learnt so much from listening to Becky and found her story fascinating. Listen in today for an emotional and insightful episode.     KEY TAKEAWAYS   Becky met her husband after being in a long-term relationship, they were introduced by friends and hit it off straight away. They both knew what they wanted from life which meant things moved quite quickly and after a little of two years they started trying for a baby. As Becky came off contraception to conceive she started to realise that her cycles didn't seem normal. After seeing the GP three times the Drs ran some tests, expecting nothing to be wrong as Becky was only 27. It turned out that Becky's FSH was a lot higher than normal, after seeing a private specialist for some answers she was told it was likely that she was experiencing premature ovarian failure and that her egg reserve reflected someone who was in their late 40s. Becky started IVF quickly and fell pregnant on the first round. She started having some abdominal pains so went for a scan but devastatingly she found out it was likely that she had miscarried. A week later the sad news was confirmed. After four failures Becky and her husband asked for some hard statistics from the specialists, it was being told that using Becky's eggs would only give them a 5% chance of having a baby that started to lead them down the path of donor eggs. Becky began to shift her mindset, this is how defining mum was born. Rather than focusing on what she would ‘lose' in terms of a genetic connection she instead focused on what she would still gain. After another failed cycle with Becky's eggs, they found a clinic in the Czech Republic and were matched with a donor quite quickly which led onto a successful pregnancy and a second twin pregnancy further down the line, they now have three beautiful daughters. If Becky's girls want to try and find their donor when they are older, Becky and her husband will support them completely and be honest and help them with all that they can. Becky and her husband recognise there is a lot of complexity around this kind of journey to motherhood and how you talk to the children as a result. All their children are under 4 and already know in a child friendly way that their ‘mummy's eggs were broken'. As they get older they will give them more information and detail. Now having the girls, Becky sees more and more every day how much she is passing on to them, genetics is such a small part. If she'd known this more before, she feels it would have made her decision much easier, which is why she endeavours to share as much as she can with the world via definingmum.com It's so important that we talk about people who have gone through infertility and that at the end of the day they are just a normal family. Things are going to be hard sometimes, you aren't meant to enjoy all of parenting. It's ok to be tired and frustrated sometimes, we are all human.       BEST MOMENTS   “That was a huge moment in my life, at the time I don't think I realised how big it was”   “It's like you're in limbo”   “It's being a parent though isn't it, you make the right decision at the time with what you've got…You did the right thing at that time and that's all you can do”   “We talk about it in a positive way and I don't want them to feel any shame around it in any way, I want them to be able to talk about it with pride”   “I would be a lot kinder to myself, recognising how big a deal it was. I would also have accessed some more specific counselling”   “It's an absolutely beautiful story, thank you for sharing it”   “As a mum, you always think you can't do it but you kinda just do!”       VALUABLE RESOURCES www.definingmum.com   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Happy-Together-Science-Positive-Psychology/dp/0143130595/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=happy+together&qid=1609229452&s=books&sr=1-1   www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org www.arc-uk.org www.sands.org.uk     ABOUT THE GUEST Becky Kearns IG: @definingmum @paths_to_parenthub     ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. Women In Learning With Kate Graham

It appears that women are under-represented at a senior level in L&D. What's going on to address this and what do we all need to be doing? David and Kate explore these points - and more - within this important conversation.    KEY TAKEAWAYS  How would you describe Fosways role in L&D and your role within the company? We are an independent analyst and our role within the industry is to look at trends and the progression across technology and talent. Our role is to help corporate organisations make better decisions, We also liaise closely with vendors to ensure we have a pragmatic picture. My role involves working across the teams and all content comes through me providing me with an overview of all that is going on.  What is the current conversation around women in learning? The statistics are not great for women progressing into senior management.  I have been involved in the conversation across social media platforms and the engagement was far and above what I was expecting, it has captured people's imaginations and is continuing to grow as people join the debate. Research based on the worldwide learning and skills group and used job titles as an indicator; in support roles the split was 33% men to 67% women,  in practitioner roles 53% men to  47% women, mid-level 49% men to 51% women, senior roles 69% men to 31% women this makes clear there is a barrier and this is a conversation we need to have. Its opened people's eyes to an issue that we didn't know was there previously.  What are you hoping to achieve from this conversation? It's about changing the statistics, ultimately women should be in those senior roles if they want to be and how as an industry can we support that through mentors etc. Mentoring is a great place to start and we are now looking at the practical steps we can implement to move forward. It isn't just about women it's about the steps anyone needs to take to move forward.  How does this conversation relate to the modernisation that is required in L&D? The important thing for this debate is that it doesn't lose sight of the link to our profession. We are and should be open-minded to the possibilities, we can challenge our own thinking and desire for flexibility and learning. Faced with this challenge, the statistics, and this ongoing conversation about women in learning that we should hold ourselves accountable for our own development in this area and continue the conversation.    BEST MOMENTS  ‘That's real life and to understand that is empowering; we can share stories about ourselves'  ‘It should be about lifting everyone up L&D is a great industry to be in because it's such a positive place to be'  ‘There were more people named David on the panel than women'  ‘It's about how the vision is executed within the company'     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Fosway Group website  Kate Graham Twitter  #womeninlearning twitter  Kate Graham LinkedIn  ABOUT THE HOST  David James    David has been a People Development professional for more than 20 years, most notably as Director of Talent, Learning & OD for The Walt Disney Company across Europe, the Middle East & Africa.  As well as being the Chief Learning Strategist at Looop, David is a prominent writer and speaker on topics around modern and digital L&D as well as an active member of the CIPD L&D Advisory Board.     CONTACT METHOD  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/davidinlearning?lang=en  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidjameslinkedin/   Website: https://www.looop.co/   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this highly informative episode, Gavan explains Gorilla goals and how you can drive your outcomes to be the best possible version of yourself you can possibly be. He explains in detail how to set goals, make a plan and successfully involve those around you to ensure you achieve all your goals, but especially your gorilla goals. Gavan shares pertinent examples from his own extensive experience, listen in now to find out more. KEY TAKEAWAYS The foundational  piece for achievement, happiness and success in life is to work out what you want to achieve   Those who spend  the time mastering goal setting will actually be the ones who achieve abundance in their lives   The dictionary definition of a goal is the object of someone's ambition or the object of their effort – a desired result. The purpose of a goal is to grow, change is inevitable but personal growth is a choice.     What types of goals are there?   The ‘A' goal This is doing something you already know how to do, it's a short-term goal that you can build into your habits.     The ‘B' goal   This s what you think you can do but you know you need to be determined to do it. It is a medium-term goal     The ‘C' goal   This is the gorilla goal. This is what you really desire but you don't know how to get there and achieve it.  This is a long-term goal. The gorilla goal cannot come about or be fulfilled unless you have dealt with the ‘A' and 'B'  goals that you have. You need to get better at delivering the ‘A' and ‘B' goals whilst keeping a mind to the ultimate gorilla goal.     How do you set a goal?   You must determine what you want and then visualise it. How does it feel? Who's there with you, where are you when achieving the goal? Be very specific, what date and time will you achieve it?   Everything you've visualised when you achieve the goal should be written down. Use this to create a plan, you now have the big picture so you can track it back to set the smaller steps required. The smaller steps create a pathway to the achievement of the gorilla goal.     When should you start goal setting?   You should start immediately don't wait until you've worked out your ‘why'. It's vital that you get started with the ‘A' and ‘B' goals,  your  ‘C' goal can come later or can be changed.   When you share aggressively you can buy and tie other people into your narrative You create accountability partners but if you don't believe in your goals enough to share them with others how are you going to get others involved in helping you achieve them   When you show that you are determined then others will want to become involved in your journey.   Set your gorilla goals and put a plan in place to achieve them then tie others into your plan by sharing it aggressively when you do this everything changes.   All of those opportunities are out there waiting for you, you just have to get serious about your goals and your gorilla goals.   BEST MOMENTS ‘That sounds unbelievable, but you'd be surprised how many people don't do it' ‘You need  a plan in place and to implement it' ‘There is a lot more going on under the bonnet of goal setting and those who spend  the time mastering goal setting will actually be the ones who achieve abundance in their lives' ‘A great white shark knows what it wants and it going to get it' ‘Really, really visualise that goal' ‘You can create a gorilla goal card, I keep that wee card tucked away in my wallet and I read it every morning and evening, so it becomes a part of me' ‘Share your goals aggressively and don't be afraid to do this' ‘I aced it in Birmingham that day and felt like I was 10 feet tall' ‘It was the goal setting that drove my behaviours around widening my horizons' VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-speed-mentor-podcast/id1454503339?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Welcome to the Speed Mentor Podcast.
