After a stellar career at Notre Dame, he was projected to be a high first round NFL draft pick in 2007. Brady Quinn and his family were invited to New York and his handsome face became a staple for camera “cutaways” during the draft broadcast. The cutaways increased as Brady dropped farther and farther into the first round and eventually NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asked Brady if he and his family would like to move to his Green Room. They happily did. Brady was drafted 22nd overall by the Browns where he got his first NFL start and first benching. Cleveland traded him to the Broncos where he never played a snap in over two seasons. He signed with the Chiefs in 2012, then in 2013, spent time with the Seahawks, Jets and Rams. He retired in 2014 after a short training camp sting with the Dolphins and went straight into broadcasting with zero experience. He's been a quick learner. These days he is a daily co-host on the Fox Sports national radio show “Two Pros and a Cup of Joe” as well as an anchor on Fox's Big Noon Kickoff. He dabbles in a number of other broadcasting ventures and when at home, he's husband to USA Olympic gymnast Alicia Sacramone and father their four children.
HEADLINES Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone-Quinn spoke with the media about their priorities in their new positions of leadership at USAG, including: Artistry, the code, and what got lost in translation in the past The importance of having two vaults How to get everyone on the same page with expectations and selection procedures How to change camps to protect the gymnasts' health How abuse would be handled moving forward The FIG clarified why it is not allowing the Irish gymnasts to represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games. We discuss what the FIG is missing and why this is not actually comparable to typical FIG nationality changes. And why is this only being dealt with now, at the last minute? GYMTERNET NEWS The US has named the men's team for the Pan American Championship U.S. Gymnasts have sued the FBI for $1 Billion Results from Osijek, where Spencer mostly wants to talk about Romania Plus, Tasha Schwikert on the USAG board, a new gymnastics video game, terrible news for future SEA Games, the NCAA coaching carousel, and the latest in constant vigilance news MINI-COMMISSIONS Have we mentioned that we love doing mini-commissions? Because we love doing mini-commissions. Vault problems: Karlie wants to know why the US is doing fewer Amanars these days and whether it makes sense for the FIG to lower the D scores of vaults instead of focusing on E score. DTY: Disgracefully Tallied Yurchenko?: Casey wants to get into the illogical value history of the Yurchenko double full through the 90s, why it has never had its moment in the sun, and what the future holds for the DTY. Alicia Quinn—who you likely know by her self-described alter ego, Alicia Sacramone—was the team captain for Team USA’s gymnastics team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where she helped the team earn a silver medal. These days, in addition to coaching gymnastics here and there, broadcasting for the SEC Network, and keeping fit with the help of her side project “The Gympire,” Alicia is also mom to Sloan, who’s 2.5 and Teagan, who’s 8 months. Here, we talk about how Alicia decided it was time to move on from gymnastics and onto quote unquote real life, how pregnancy positively affected Alicia’s body image and self-esteem, how to be gentle on yourself as you try to stay fit as a mother, and some of the things Alicia wish she knew before she was thrown into the thick of things. Transcript: https://www.alsomom.com/aliciasacramonequinn Episode Highlights: 4:30 - The story of Alicia's comeback to elite gymnastics in 2010 10:35 - Alicia thinks she "could've worked harder" before the 2008 Olympic Games (and I tell her that sounds like motherhood talking) 11:55 - How her training as an elite gymnast has helped her in these early years of motherhood 14:50 - Body image! Pregnancy, postpartum, and the gymnastics body image warp for baby #1 and baby #2 18:57 - A tiny snippet of Alicia's birth story with Sloan 20:53 - Alicia's experience with surgery as an elite gymnast and how it prepared her for the challenges of recovering from a cesarean birth 24:15 - How she makes time for workouts, or more accurately, how she's changed her definition of what counts as a workout these days 30:20 - Alicia's top four product recommendations for new moms 32:04 - A shared mutual hatred for laundry (you too?) Links Mentioned: The Gympire - Alicia and former teammate Samantha Peszek's Instagram account full of fun ways to stay fit BabyBjorn Carrier - The carrier Alicia wore Sloan in for treadmill walks. UPPAbaby Vista Stroller - It's a worthy workout just pushing a kid or two in this thing. Ollie Swaddle - One of Alicia's favorites (ours too!) for great sleep. DockaTot - Another favorite for sleep. Doona Car Seat / Stroller - Alicia's obsessed. YogaGlo (Glo) - Megan's go-to for at-home yoga. (Want me to send you a free class? Email me at megan@alsomom.com!) Audible - Megan's go-to for audiobooks while folding endless laundry. Sign up for the free 30 day membership and receive two free audiobooks! Recent favorites include Becoming by Michelle Obama, Educated by Tara Westover, and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Blinkist - Alicia's go-to for SparkNotes-style summaries of non-fiction books she definitely doesn't have time to read. @asaq3 - Where you can follow Alicia (and also find cute pictures of Sloan and Teagan)
Key takeaways: Kind of continuing a theme we started last time on the show with Casey and Matt Iseman, Nicole took the risk to go talk to Alicia Sacramone, a silver medalist with the 2008 United States Olympic team, and the second most decorated American gymnast in world champion history. They hit it off, and Alicia is now Vice President of the company, and had Nicole not had the courage to approach her, who knows where her business might be today. In the end, it's all about connections, and all people are looking for connections and opportunities. And in this day and age, with all the tools out there, it's easier than ever before to connect. Your time is not only valuable and deserves compensation, but your services reflect not only you but your contractors and team as well. If you go above and beyond, you deserve to set your prices accordingly and get paid. You can't make a living doing your hobby for free. If you are a passion driven entrepreneur, make sure you have somebody to keep you in check. Streamlining your business practices allows you to be more efficient and service more people with your processes and behind the scenes tasks, and in doing so actually allows for MORE individualization and creativity because you have not only saved time, but established boundaries to stimulate that creativity. BONUS QUOTE: “If you commit 100% you literally can't fail.”
Sam welcomes to the podcast former Olympic teammate and close friend, Alicia Sacramone Quinn. Alicia is a former American gymnast who is also the second-most decorated American gymnast in World Championship history, netting ten medals during her illustrious career. Since retiring from gymnastics, Alicia has gone on to start a family and welcomed her second daughter in July 2018. Alicia also collaborated with Sam to launch The Gympire, a fitness company with the mission of encouraging, motivating, and inspiring people to live a happy and healthy life. In this episode, Sam and Alicia recall their memories from the 2007 World Championships and 2008 Olympic games. They discuss the peaks and valleys they encountered along the way to becoming Olympic medalists, including injuries and other roadblocks. Alicia and Sam reminisce over Sam’s infamous journal, as they look back on their friendship. This week, Jessica had the pleasure of chatting with legendary daredevil beam queen and two-time Olympian Elvire Teza and her partner in French greatness, Cecile Canqueteau-Landi, 1996 Olympian and coach of 2016 Olympic gold medalist for team USA, 2015 bars world champ, Madison Kocian and—now—Simone Biles! How training has changed from the 80's and 90's. Being part of the French superstar era of firsts with Isabelle Severino, Ludvine Furnon and Eloidie Lussac. Stereotypes of French training vs. American training: cigarettes, boyfriends, wine, baguettes, artistry, etc. Adriana Pop and Laurent Landi bringing the makeup to the French-style performance game. How Teza learned her crazy eponymous skills and dealing with her constant fear. Why Cecile chooses to stay in the United States for the "more rewarding" gymnastics, especially NCAA and level 10s. What they think of the current Code of Points and how they'd do under todays code. What it's like coaching Simone Biles and which crazy skills we can convince Simone to do. The 1996 Olympic Games in the loud Georgia dome, AKA the butter-smell arena. How to avoid burnout the French way: All the naughty things they did to get a break from their grueling schedules. Why Cecile and Laurent took a long break after Rio. Required Viewing Cecile Canqueteau-Landi floor 1996 Olympics, and beam from 1998 featuring "tusk mount" jump half-turn to handstand from side Elvire Teza fluff from 1998 American Cup, floor 1996, beam 1997, bars 2000 Live Show at NCAAs Seats limited. This week, we bring you the final installment in our epic 1996 Olympics TRILOGY: the event finals. This episode is brought to you by Club Gym Nerd member Kris (who also commissioned the 1996 all-around final because of legendary status—the rest of us could never), who thought it only fitting that we leave no stone unturned and no competition un-dissected when it comes to the glory and wonder and pageantry of the 1996 Olympics. 2008 Silver Medal Olympian. NCAA All-Around Champion. Hoosier turned UCLA Bruin. And now...a sports commentator. There isn't much Samantha Peszek can't do. She is a compact ball of energy that has a bright future ahead of her. Samantha grew up in Indianapolis as an elite gymnast. Once she was done competing at the elite level, she packed her bags, headed west to the University of California at Los Angeles where she killed it as a Bruin. The school recently surprised Samantha by retiring her leotard. While her heart and family remain in Indiana, she loves the healthy lifestyle that California provides from both a nutritional and fitness perspective. We sat down at Deveau's Gymnastics, the gym where she grew up, to chat with Samantha before the Olympics. She discussed overcoming mental blocks, some of her predictions for the Olympic games, and what is in store for the future. For those Instagram fans, she and Olympic teammate, Alicia Sacramone, recently launched The Gympire ('thegympire') to inspire people to keep moving. Samantha is well-articulate and smart. It was an exciting interview for Kristi Lee and Tiffany Stoner...two enormous gymnastics fans.

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW One of our original hosts, Dvora Meyers has just published The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Breaking of Gymnastics' Top Score - from Nadia to Now. The book is the latest must-have in the gym nerd library. It examines the evolution of elite women’s gymnastics over the last few decades and answers questions that gymnastics fans have been asking since the last perfect score was handed out over 20 years ago. She reveals why successful female gymnasts are older and more athletic than they have ever been before, how the United States became a gymnastics powerhouse, and what the future of gymnastics will hold. Lauren and Jessica chat with Dvora about (4:45): MythBusters in the book: Who were Nadia’s actual first gymnastics coaches, when the open-ended scoring system came about, East Germany set precedent for the current American training system. Gymternet vs television coverage - past and current Insulting coverage that creates gymnastics like a sideshow How the Ranch has changed over the years Texas Dreams taking athlete education to a whole new level. Is the marketability of the 10.0 real or is it just nostalgia. The gymternet versus dumbed-down Olympic television coverage. Are we better off now with the open-ended scoring system? Olympic Trials Preview (38:16) Which athletes qualified to Trials, list here. An ode to Alyssa Baumann's gorgeousness and why we are so sad that she is injured. Which gymnasts should just be stoked to be at Trials and soak up the experience versus women who are actually in the mix. Wildcards: Amelia Hundley, Maggie Nichols and Ragan Smith Will we see a team where both bars of the top bar gymnasts, Ashton and Kocian are on the same team? Will the business side of gymnastics come into who is chosen to do the all-around in Rio? Will Gabby do her Amanar and upgrade bars at Trials? Can Swaggie Maggie make the team without her Amanar, and the rise of Laurie Hernandez? Lauren's Team: Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian Alternates: Ragan Smith, Ashton Locklear and MyKayla Skinner Jessica's Team: Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian, Ashton Locklear maximizing bars potential score (that's right, six people because both need to go!).
