Welcome to the second episode of the Purpose to Impact series on Stories from the River. In this episode, host Charlie Malouf introduces Teri Frangie, the newly appointed Senior Vice President of Global Business Development with Core Leadership Institute, and Kip Meyer.  Both Teri and Kip attended the two-day Purpose to Impact program held on October 22nd and 23rd in Fort Mill, South Carolina, facilitated by Nick Craig from the Core Leadership Institute. Katie BEE (aka Kate McGlynn) is a remarkable human being who has lived her life saying “yes” and then figuring it out.  She has been a teen peer counselor, taught improv, laughter yoga and meditation.  She worked for 12 years as a street performer in Europe, as a circus performer all over the world, and as a performance-inspired community organizer in Detroit and other cities.  In 2021 with the pandemic raging, Katie founded the Joy First Foundation and spent the next three years living in a trailer traveling the U.S.A. bringing joy to the nation's front-line workers—retail workers, nurses, airline employees—who gave so much with so little appreciation during the pandemic. Malia Gilbert-Neal, the executive director of Arts Well, grew up poor and Black in Philadelphia and has been creating community empowerment organizations her entire adult life. La Transplanisphère, based in Paris, France, has been doing cutting-edge political theatre for two decades bringing artists, students, and “ordinary people” together to explore the political and cultural challenges facing Europe as it becomes more diverse.  In residence, since 2018, at the Lycée Albert Schweitzer in Le Raincy, a working-class suburb of Paris, La Transplanisphére has, among many other things, developed methods for teachers who want to use play and performance to explore political issues and the challenges of cross-cultural dialogue with their students. In 2020 with the pandemic ravishing Brazil and the country's president doing nothing to combat it, a group of progressive Brazilian educators, led by Dr. Fernanda Liberali, of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and an East Side Institute Associate, found a way to move forward through play.  Inspired by the Global Play Brigade, which was (and is) bringing play and performance out around the world through Zoom, they organized the Brincadas, which have taken play into the schools and streets of São Paulo.  In this episode, a group of Brincadas share how play gave them a way to breathe during a suffocating moment and to go beyond traditional education to, “play with serious injustice. Francine Kilemann and Marcia Donadel are bringing their experience with site-specific, immersive theatre to elementary school education in Brazil.  Through Plato Cultural they lead students and teachers in creating fictional worlds in which the children become “SOS Agents” from the future tasked with helping to save the environment. Trained as an actress and theatrical director, Marian has spent over 30 years designing and delivering playful social therapeutic workshops and programs.  An accomplished improvisational actor, Marian has performed improv comedy with This is Your Ridiculous Life and The Proverbial Loons, stand-up comedy at Caroline's Comedy Club (NYC), and traveled to Central America exploring humanitarian clowning with her clown mentor, Dr. Patch Adams. Can music be developmental?  Probably not.  However, the creation of music—particularly when done in ensemble through improvisation—most certainly can.  Ursel Schlicht, an innovative music maker based in Kassel, Germany, shares her approaches to creating music across political and cultural borders. Season five of our podcast continues with another presentation from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology' Online. This episode features a presentation written by Mary Fridley & Susan Massad, with Gwen Lowenheim presenting for Susan Massad, all from The East Side Institute, New York City.   ABSTRACT: As viewed through a biomedical lens – which remains the dominant way in which dementia is seen – Alzheimer's and related dementias (ADRD) is seen primarily as a condition of loss of capabilities within an individual: of speech, of cognitive abilities, of physical capacities and, eventually, of life while research and treatment is directed toward cure of the  individual. Dementia activists across the globe are now raising the question: Is the shame, stigma, and isolation that people with ADRD and their families experience in large part a result of this very narrow lenses through which dementia is understood? In this paper we will present on the Joy of Dementia (You've Got to Be Kiddin!) project, a  playful, philosophical and conversational collective exploration of the dementia experience as an effort to introduce a different lens – a development lens – as a counter narrative that challenges the current “tragedy narrative” surrounding ADRD. Seen through a development lens, humans are no longer are viewed, not as discrete and isolated individuals but as relational beings, connected to one another in ways that allows us to grow with, rather than fear, uncertainty.  In this view, a dementia diagnosis presents transformational opportunities not just for the individual diagnosed, but to everyone in the “dementia ensemble” – including people of all ages who fear growing older and losing cognitive abilities. The workshops, always experiential, often involve mixed groupings of family members, care givers, professionals and those diagnosed, introduces improvisational play and philosophical conversation as activities that support the discovery of new ways of relating, being together, listening and responding. Participants are supported to challenge deeply held assumptions about what we and others “know” about the dementia experience, and it is within this collaborative ensemble building activity that the joy that comes with creating a new performances of dementia is discovered.   BIOS:    Mary Fridley is pro-bono Director of Special Projects at the East Side Institute in NYC and an accomplished teacher and workshop leader. She practiced social therapy for 12 years and continues to use the social therapeutic approach as an Institute faculty member. Mary co-leads two popular workshop series, “The Joy of Dementia (You Gotta Be Kidding)” and “Laughing Matters” and was featured in a February 2019 Washington Post article, “Changing ‘the tragedy narrative': Why a growing camp is promoting a more joyful approach to Alzheimer.” Mary is also a playwright and theater director and works as a non-profit fundraising consultant.   Susan Massad is a retired clinician and medical educator. A primary care physician she has researched and taught in the arena of doctor-patient communication and the social-cultural-biological dimensions of health and wellness. She is a faculty member at the The East Side Institute where she is the co-creator of the Joy of Dementia© workshops that she coleads all over the US with colleague, Mary Fridley.   Gwen Lowenheim is a learning design specialist and TESOL instructor. She is co-founder/co-director of The Snaps Project, an educational consulting firm. Gwen trains and supervises educators and social entrepreneurs around the world in a social therapeutic, performance-based learning approach that brings creativity and innovation into classrooms and community-based programs. None of the problems our world is facing right now can be solved if we can’t find new ways to talk to each other. Right now, consensus seems like a far off dream and we find ourselves asking, are we doomed to fail? Or is it possible to create a new way to talk to each other so that we can reach consensus and move forward? Maybe we’re following a script that isn’t working? Maybe it’s time to improvise. And that’s what we’re going to learn about today in our conversation with Marian Rich and Carrie Lobman from the East Side Institute, co-authors of “Playing Around with Changing the World,” a chapter about the East Side Institute’s International Class called The Applied Improvisation Mindset, to be published by Bloomsbury Press early 2021. 

How do we learn and how do we live? As it turns out, play is the key to our learning everything, from taking our first steps to walking on the moon. In this inaugural episode of the Yes, and Cafe, we speak with Dr. Lois Holzman, Director of the East Side Institute in New York City and Distinguished Fellow of Lloyd International Honors College at UNC Greensboro, about the power of play. Tucker Daniel, music education student and class of 2020, joins the conversation.

Susan is a retired primary care physician educator who is on the faculty of the ESI and she has had a long interest exploring the experience of illness for all those involved.  Mary is on the faculty of the ESI, where she has practiced therapy for 12 years and continues to use the social therapeutic approach as a teacher and workshop leader. Dr. Lois Holzman is a highly respected scholar and teacher who is pioneering a cultural approach to human learningand development rooted in the human capacity to perform, play and pretend. As a play revolutionary, I believe that play can revolutionarily transform the world and all of its people. These are the words of Lois Holzman co-founder of the East Side Institute for Group and Short Term Psychotherapy. Through her work she discovered that play, performance and group creativity are the leading factors in human development and learning. In this episode of the Liminal podcast Lois shares the story of how she transformed from a developmental psychologist into a play revolutionary. She also tells the story of how she was involved in creating a school without grades and how play and performance changed the adversarial relationship between cops and inner city kids in New York city. We also explore how we can use play and improvisation to help our own personal transformation.
