San Benito County is one of the unsung jewels of the Central California Coast.  Most people know of San Juan Bautista and the Pinnacles, but there is much, much more.  Two mountain ranges, broad valleys, rangelands, farmlands and biodiversity.  But the Highway 101 corridor, which runs through a corner of the county, provides access to Silicon Valley and the SF Bay and people are moving south in search of cheaper housing.  Malls and sprawls are not far behind.  Now, a local movement is seeking to limit development with an initiative to require a public vote if agricultural, rural or range land is rezoned to residential, commercial or industrial use, a strategy already applied in several other California counties. Join host Ronnie Lipschutz to hear from Andy Hsia-Coron of Protect San Benito County, one of the activists behind the initiative, Chris Wilmers of UCSC, who studies cougars and bobcats that want to cross the road, Seth Adams from Save Mount Diablo, a land trust active across the County, and Val Lopez, Chair of the Amah Mutsun, whose ancestral lands cover much of the County.

Celebrate World Ranger Day with this “From the Vault” Big Blend Radio interview with Jim and Gayle Sleznick. We recorded this conversation onsite in late spring 2015, on a visit to San Benito County, Central California, the eastern gateway destination to Pinnacles National Park. It only took a few minutes to find out that they have one incredible life story to tell about living and working in various National Park units. Gayle's park story begins in Death Valley, where her father worked, and where her mother had to travel out to Riverside, California to give birth to her. Jim's park story started when he was a teenager, on family vacations in parks like Yosemite and Yellowstone. His park career began with a summer job in Crater Lake, where he met Gayle. They married when he began his full-time park ranger job in Lake Mead. Together for over 55 years, they lived and worked in several parks including the Gila Cliff National Monument, Virgin Islands National Park, Yosemite National Park, Lava Lake Volcano National Park, and beyond. Jim eventually retired from Pinnacles National Park, and they moved about 45 minutes northwest of the park, to the historic village of San Juan Bautista, which is on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. They helped to create the local Anza Trail, a beautiful hiking trail that overlooks the valley. We recently learned that Jim passed away at the age of 91, on April 21, 2024. May he rest in peace. Our hearts go out to Gayle and his family. He is missed.

I spoke to Carl just over 5 months ago, his company was on the path to go public while establishing the Hash Bone product line. In that short amount of time Carl not only went public on the Canadian Stock Exchange (CSE) under the ticker HOLL and is also trading on the Over The Counter (OTC) market ticker HSTRF. But Hollister Cannabis Co. is not stopping there, the roll of signings continued with Tommy Chong and the relaunch of the celebrities brand under Tommy Chong Cannabis. The initial launch of this product will be a 1000mg Tommy Chongs Elixir a 1 to 1 CBD to THC tincture. Tactical Relief a veteran owned business that is committed to returning 5% of profits to veteran charities. The husband and wife team run Hollister Cannabis Co. straight of of San Benito County, but do not let this sleepy town define the business. As of this podcast the company is in the final stages in acquisition of Venom Extracts, the largest extraction business in Arizona with facilities in Nevada soon to be operating in California as well. The acquisition provides instantaneous revenue (as of press Venom Extracts did $13MM in 2019) and the ability to be a Multi State Operator (MSO) for all of their brands. Of course, in the height of everything moving quickly, Covid-19 hits and Carl and his wife pivot. They kick into gear to take care of their employees while they create policy and continue to operate safely while also making sure the staff feels appreciated. One of the the things I am the most impressed with is how much Carl and his wife Amasa care for their staff, not always the case in business let alone cannabis. Make sure to visit Hollister Cannabis Co. website follow the company on IG @hollistercannabisco @hashbones and go buy some stock on the CSE HOLL or OTC HSTRF.
