Pred dvema letoma ni imela za gorivo do doma, danes je lastnica picerije, veganske kavarne in bara v središču Ljubljane. Danes 31-letna Anina je pustila faks, kar je bila le ena v nizu njenih pogumnih odločitev. Po mesecu smiljenja sami sebi so ji odobrili kredit v višini 40.000 evrov. Na Bolhi je kupila stole za 10 evrov, sama je prepleskala prostore, uredila električno napeljavo, vodo in začela prodajati pice izza okenske police. Piše Ajda Klepej, bereta Lidija Hartman in Aleksander Golja. Novi roman Tam, kjer plešejo tulipani Irene Svetek bi lahko z manjšo zadržanostjo imenovali zgodovinski roman. Pred nami razgrinja tragično zgodbo rodbine Romančik, ki ji, sodeč po vstavljenem družinskem drevesu in ujemanju v letih, avtorica tudi sama pripada. Zgodba njene družine se osredinja okrog treh generacij žensk, razteza se skozi obdobje dveh stoletij, vmes pa se zamenjajo kar štirje državni sistemi in režimi. Skozi usode treh žensk je predstavljena vsa krutost človekovega značaja, ki mu svetovne vojne in totalitarni režimi omogočajo še več priložnosti za izražanje samovolje skozi nasilje. Roman je predvsem ubeseditev hudih duševnih, vojnih in povojnih, zlasti po krivici doživetih travm in tega, kako se te prenašajo iz generacije v generacijo. Pestrost romana vzdržuje že prostor dogajanja – srbsko mesto Vršac. V začetku 20. stoletja je bilo mesto stičišče različnih narodnosti, kultur in jezikov in ravno zaradi svoje heterogenosti je v vojnem in povojnem obdobju doživljalo veliko sprememb. Življenja nemško, madžarsko, srbsko, romunsko in hebrejsko govorečih prebivalcev so tekla, kot je v nekem trenutku narekovala zgodovina. Maria, Katka in Ana – babica, hči in vnukinja – so v romanu žrtve nepravega zgodovinskega trenutka; so prave grške tragične junakinje – v veliki meri brez krivde krive. Nesrečni dogodek, ki je tedaj še pomembno in vplivno družino Romančik zaznamoval za več rodov sega v leto 1912. Josef Garaj se je že ob prvem srečanju z Michalom Romančikom, lastnikom bogatih vinogradov in razkošne meščanske vile, odločil, da se bo polastil njegovega bogastva prek poroke z njegovo hčerjo Katko. Sicer pa so v zgodbi poudarjene ženske in njihovi odnosi z moškimi in ne nasprotno. Poleg zgodovinskih okoliščin, ki zaznamujejo slehernika, so Maria, Katka in Ana zaznamovane tudi s svojim spolom. Njihove odločitve temeljijo izključno na razmerah, ki so določale življenje žensk na začetku 20. stoletja. Predvsem so se morale izkazati v vlogi matere in žene ter ohranjati dostojanstvo in ugled družine. Katka je zato morala sprejeti Garajevo snubitev, saj je nepričakovano in še neporočena zanosila z vaškim slikarjem. Nemoč žensk tistega časa zoper omejitve svojega spola, ki so ga vplivni moški videli kot objekt poželenja in sredstvo za doseganje svojih ciljev, pa najbolj pooseblja Ana. Komaj petnajstletna se je morala poročiti s Herzelom Kleinom, ki se je za to poroko odločil že pri njenih enajstih letih. Bila je žrtev posilstva zagrizenega nacista Hansa Schullerja, in poslana v delavsko taborišče, ker je zavrnila dvorjenje komisarja Jasenka Labudovića. Avtorica je po mojem mnenju najbolje ubesedila prav njeno zgodbo, Anina osebna zgodba in zgodovinsko dogajanje sta usklajeni. Irena Svetek ubeseduje Anine občutke med begom pred nacisti in njeno preživetje koncentracijskega in delavskega taborišča. Na tem mestu beremo skope opise zunanje okolice in bogate pejsaže Aninih notranjih razmišljanj: »Pisala je o oblekah, ki niso bile njene, ampak razcapane krpe, ki jih je dobila potem, ko so jih slekli s teles mrtvih žensk, pisala je o hrani, ki jo je pojedla, čeprav so bile to le skorje kruha ali redka plesniva juha z okusom po zemlji in soli.« Roman Tam, kjer plešejo tulipani je napisan v izjemno baročnem in na trenutke že preobloženem slogu. Vsevedni pripovedovalec se osredotoča na vsak zvok, lego sonca, lune in zvezd, postavitev pohištva in zunanjo okolico, zanemarja pa notranje življenje zgodovinskih oseb, ki je tukaj bistveno. Povedi, kot je »Razmišljal je o odgovornosti, ki ga čaka, o umetnosti in o lastnem življenju, ki sta se tako nepričakovano prepletala,« preprosto ne zadovoljijo. Avtorica sicer v roman umešča pasuse, ki jih liki izrečejo prvoosebno skozi pisma in dialoge, vendar bi jih bilo zaradi boljšega pogleda v njihove notranje stiske lahko več. Vse do zadnjega dela romana, kjer avtorica ubeseduje Anino zgodbo in stisko, se zdi, kot da je izpričana zgodovinska kulisa zgolj to – kulisa. Faktografsko obnavljanje zgodovinskega poteka na začetku vsakega poglavja se je v romanu razvilo v predvidljiv vzorec. Liki zaradi teh opisov niso nič bolje umeščeni v zgodovinsko dogajanje, nasprotno, zdi se, kot da bi se osebni zgodbi Marije in Katke lahko dogajali kadarkoli, kot da nista pogojeni s svojim časom. Med zgodovinskim dogajanjem in osebnimi zgodbami zeva pregloboka diskrepanca, predvsem zaradi zgodovinskih uvodov, ki spominjajo na izseke iz učbenika za zgodovino. Kljub obsežnim in številnim zgodovinskim odlomkom pa ravno zato, ker je razmerje med zgodovinskim in osebnim preveč neuravnoteženo, ne začutimo avtentičnega zeitgeista. Treba je poudariti, da je avtoričin slog brez dvoma utemeljen, čudovite povedi, dobro pričarajo zgodovinski trenutek: »Težke žametne zavese so dušile svetlobo, ki je pronicala skozi medeninaste lestence in pozlačene oljenke na stenah, v zraku je lebdel gost cigaretni dim, za mizami so sedeli gostje v svilenih telovnikih z manšetnimi sponkami na rokavih …«. Nekoliko bolj kritična do strukture romana si dovolim biti predvsem zato, ker je roman vreden poglobljenega branja in kritičnega premisleka, slog pisanja pa je dovolj izčiščen, da ga tovrstni premislek ne bo ogrožal. Roman Tam, kjer plešejo tulipani ponuja poglobljeno branje o tragični družinski zgodbi in samem tragičnem dvajsetem stoletju. Avtorica Irena Svetek je s poustvarjanjem Anine zgodbe dokazala, da zna v pripoved o globokih osebnih stiskah vtkati tudi zunanje okoliščine, ki jih povzročajo, z nekoliko prilagojeno pripovedno tehniko in prestrukturiranjem romana pa bi nam krivdo, travmo, strah, krivico, nezadoščenost in bolečino še bolj približala. Čeprav si je to težko predstavljati, saj roman bralca že zdaj pretrese in ga navda z grozo.

Together, they take you on a journey into the connection between oral and overall health, exploring how a healthy mouth can influence the entire body.  Graziani discusses research showing that periodontal therapy can significantly support glycaemic control in diabetic patients. He also highlights findings of oral bacteria in atheromatous plaques, illustrating the potential connection between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease.  Periodontitis can furthermore trigger systemic inflammation, thereby aggravating diabetes and increasing heart disease risk. In fact, 57 systemic diseases have already been associated with periodontitis, says Graziani.  As such, periodontal therapy not only improves patients' quality of life — it may even support cognitive functions.  How far can periodontal treatment go in shaping general health outcomes?

One of the fastest way to reach a new goal is by embodying your new identity. You know how the saying goes, envision your highest-self and start showing up as her. But what does that even mean? To me it means you not only take action and make decisions as your highest self would but you also start thinking as she would, dressing as she would, talking as she would, all around start embodying your highest self. Your perception becomes your reality. If you are able to practice and envision your highest self daily it slowly becomes our new reality because your unconscious mind accepts this as the 'new normal'. Her second YA memoir, Islands Apart: Becoming Dominican American (Arte Público Press) is forthcoming in May 2022 and her debut poetry collection, City Without Altar, was a finalist for the Noemi Press Book Award for Poetry and will be released in August 2022. Her debut middle grade book Anina del Mar Jumps In (Dial) is a novel in verse about a young girl diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and is set to release in 2023. Her debut picture book Josefina's Habichuelas (Arte Público Press), was released last year. Mendez has had poetry and essays published by or forthcoming in numerous journals and anthologies including The Kenyon Review, New England Review, the YA Latinx Anthology Wild Tongues Can't be Tamed edited by Saraciea Fennell (Flatiron/Macmillan), and in The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNext (Haymarket Books). She has translated and written poetry and a libretto for the Houston Grand Opera and she translated Amanda Gorman's best-selling Change Sings into the Spanish edition La canción del cambio. The dramatized version of her play in verse City Without Altar received its world premiere at Milagro theatre in Portland, Oregon this spring. She is an MFA graduate of the creative writing program at the Rainier Writing Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University, a University of Houston alumni, and a Canto Mundo Fellow. Based in Houston, she is the Co-Founder and Program Director of the Houston based Latinx literary arts organization Tintero Projects and a co-host to the poetry and writing podcast series InkWell a collaboration between Tintero Projects and Inprint Houston. She is a Canto Mundo Fellow, a Kenyon Review Writer's Workshop Peter Taylor Fellow and a Macondo and VONA alumni. Today on Clay in Color, we chat with Anina Major. She creates ceramic sculptures, mixed media installations, videos, and performances about the relationship between self and place from a Caribbean diasporic lens. In our interview, we talk about how she developed the language of plaiting in her vessels from traditions of straw weaving in the Bahamas and her love of materials. We also discuss guilt as a starting point for the investigations in her practice, how her feelings have changed as her practice evolved, and ideas of universality and specificity in the perspectives she shares.
