We're less than 30 days out from the 2024 elections. And I don't have to tell you there's a lot at stake up and down the ballot. From the presidential race to congressional and Senate races, to state legislatures. And on down to city council, county board, mayoral and school board races. All of them matter. And all of them have the potential to have a big impact on the wellbeing of our clients and their families. And as you're no doubt very aware, the polling is really tight in many of these races. And that just reinforces how very powerful a single vote can be. Hopefully most of your clients are already registered to vote, perhaps with your help. Registration deadlines have passed in a number of states, but there may still be time to register where you live. So definitely double-check your deadlines and do everything you can to get your clients registered before the deadline. But now it's time to focus on helping your clients make a plan to vote, so that they can be assured of their vote counting. And that's what we're zeroing in on in this week's episode. In this episode, we share:The three key ingredients to a successful plan to voteThe most helpful and effective questions to ask your client about their plan to voteSix essential pieces of information your clients need to make sure their vote countsHow to address voter suppression efforts aimed at your clients How to help clients who want to vote on election day instead of voting earlyA one-stop, easy-to-use resource to help your clients become well-informed votersLink to Ballotready.org If you found value in this episode, please share it with other progressive nonprofit leaders. And I'd be grateful if you would leave a rating and review on Apple podcasts, which will help even more people find out about this podcast. Thanks!
You've likely heard the saying "all politics is local." But here's the hitch. For many local offices, there's often just one candidate running in a race. Sometimes, nobody's running at all. In 2022, 67 percent of races went uncontested. That's according to the nonpartisan research organization BallotReady. That not only leaves voters with a lack of choice, but also raises questions about how and where we choose to live and who influences local policies. We discuss uncontested races and why they matter. This week we are recording from University Presbyterian Church in Austin following the Texas Impact fall board meeting. It is always a good day when the Texas Impact board gets together. A room full of Texas faith leaders from various traditions committed to creating a more just and equitable Texas. It can't get better than that right? So, we decided to share some of the fun with you, in a conversation with three of our newer board members talking about why justice ministries are important, what they are paying attention to and what we can do. In the conversation we mentioned Ballot Ready. This is a tool to help you or your congregation help your community participate in the elections and help you keep track of the impact your efforts are having. As Chicago's municipal election approaches at the end of February, Dame and Kiss chop it up with mayoral candidate and liberation movement member Brandon Johnson. A longtime organizer and public servant, Brandon has been running a campaign championing many of the policies and campaigns that our movements have been pushing for, and has coalesced the support of grassroots organizations and progressive organized labor behind him as he elbows through the crowd of mayoral candidates. A bit of a different flavor for this episode! I had my friend Lina Erez on the show, she works with brands and people that are pushing for positive change, to design their story and spark action. Lina's got a whole slew of clients including Adler Planetarium, BallotReady and Birthright Israel. Here's what we hit on: When you say “pushing for positive change” what does that actually mean (aren't we all pushing for positive change); How do you help brands design their story for action, what's your process; What do many companies get wrong when it comes to brand design (HINT: a lot of times they're looking for BIG and BOLD but that's actually not what you want to do, you want to think about your BIG idea); What has been your favorite project; Goals for this year. I'm a firm believer that the majority if not all, problems that exist are ultimately a communication problem. And as your company scales, how you communicate sets the precedent for your leadership style.Aviva Rosman and her Cofounder Alex Niemczewski have scaled BallotReady to 100 employees with 300+ customers including names like Spotify, TikTok, Snapchat, and Levis. But they were on the verge of this never happening because they didn't have the right model to communicate with each other.Enter Conscious Leadership.Once they adopted this model of leadership and communication they were able to be 100% open and honest with one another, which allowed the company to grow.Aviva steps to the mic in this week's episode to share how both of their pent-up frustration led to a 3-hour conversation at a bar, which changed the face of their relationship for the better and paved the way for healthy company culture.Find Aviva online:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/avivarosman/Find Ballot Ready online:Website: https://www.ballotready.org/This episode is sponsored by Miquido - a full-service software development partner that supports companies in building their digital products. In Sorcerer's Stone: Fluffy and Professor Quirrell's death are just two of the most terrifying moments for 11-year-old Harry. During this month, we covered so many important topics surrounding Freedom. But what they all came back to USING YOUR VOICE to be the change you want to see in the world. And one of the best examples of that is VOTING. Voting is an opportunity to make meaningful change - an opportunity that we're so lucky to have here in America. So how are you going to use that opportunity to make an impact? Making an impact can come in so many forms… Whether it be voting, lobbying, running for office, volunteering, or just standing up for what you believe in. But what alllll those things have in common is key: Policy. The Policy Circle is a nonprofit organization that helps you take ownership of what you want to change so that you can make a real impact. And during our freedom event SheVotes, we hosted a Policy Circle of our own… So follow along with us as we dive into the topic of VOTING. The election is only 34 DAYS AWAY… so how are you going to use those days? EPISODE RESOURCES: ☑️ Make sure you're registered to vote HERE.
It's a short one this week, but YOU'VE GOT HOMEWORK! October 5th - 9th is National Voter Education Week. How are you going to use this time to prepare for the election? We switched it up this episode and have provided discussion questions about elections and voting for families to use next week (and all month long). We are living during unprecedented times and kids are asking a lot of questions. Don't miss out on an opportunity to engage because of fear. Remember, we're preparing them to fix this mess. Bring your kids along on the journey with you. Here are your discussion questions:Why should people vote, even if they do not like the candidates? What can they do about it?What is missing in the discussion in schools about voting?OR What do you wish was covered and why? Sometimes candidates run ads and say harmful things about each other. What do you think about those kinds of ads? Are they helpful? What can parents do to raise informed and engaged future voters?Voting is only one, very important part of your civic experience. What other ways can people make a change in their community?Kids can't vote. So what are ways that kids can contribute to their communities? We'd love to hear about your family discussion. One thing that we enjoy are harsh negative reviews of albums we love! What was going through their minds when they wrote these reviews? Did they miss the point of the album entirely? Did they go into it in an entirely differing moodset? Or does the fact that only 28% of women in New Jersey owning passports completely diminish the attempt at a heartfelt metaphor? (I promise, that line will make sense in the context of the show) Regardless of the reviewers intent, these negative reviews that we pulled from both users and professional music journalists are certainly fun to read and react to. So we hope that you enjoy another episode of '2 out of 10: Would Not Headbang' or 'Tugid Naval Gazing' or whatever the heck this segment is called! Also on the show, we were offered an early listen of the new upcoming EP 'Cemetary School' from UK band, Vampire Money! We very much enjoyed their unique blending of emo laced goth punk paired with the picturesque songwriting that is reminiscent of bands like My Chem and Palaye Royal. We hope that you enjoy our spotlight on the lead single, "King of Beggars", and be sure to check out their EP this Friday, September 25th on streaming platforms!
