A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

Between 2007 and 2008, the gaming industry underwent transformative changes and faced challenges both external and internal. In 2007, as the world teetered on the brink of a global recession, new blockbuster franchises like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, and Uncharted took the stage. However, challenges like the Xbox 360's 'Red Ring of Death' highlighted the need for rigorous quality control. Mergers and acquisitions were the order of the day, with Activision merging with Vivendi and EA continuing its acquisition spree. Meanwhile, Bungie's decision to part ways with Microsoft signaled a significant shift in industry dynamics. Amidst this backdrop, digital marketplaces like WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade emerged, revolutionizing game distribution. 2008 then witnessed the indie game scene's meteoric rise, primarily driven by Xbox Live's 'Summer of Arcade.' This event not only showcased indie games to the wider public but also set the stage for an indie creative boom that would reshape the industry. The two years posed questions about consolidation, innovation, and the evolving dynamics between major players and indie developers.Featured Games:BioShock, Portal, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Mario Kari Wii, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

On this very late '00s edition of the Daydreamcast, our friend Murph returns to talk to us about the world of video games. We get a status update on his Assassin's Creed playthrough which, thankfully, is in its twilight years. We revisit the contentious and topical subject of roguelikes/-lites with more Hades talk, and even get some Yu-Gi-Oh discussion in. If that's not enough 2000s energy for you, Brogan adds two period-relevant platformers from opposite ends of the qualitative spectrum to the mix with Little Big Planet and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. You can tell it's a strange episode when Pavlos is the one to report on the new hotness with New Pokémon Snap, a worthy sequel to the original that gets a lot of things right and a couple wrong as the photography conceit is unthawed again, at last, for another spin-off that is much better than whatever is going on in the ailing main series. Our game of the week highlights genre hybrid and species simulator Spore and its troubled history and subsequently skewed trajectory as moderately disappointing but still interesting footnote in video game history. Thankfully, Murph was a Sporehead from day zero so besides our usual rundown of the game's somewhat simplistic but conceptually ambitious mechanics, including its five gameplay stages and the creating tools, we kick back and listen to our buddy tell stories from the days of Spore yore, the pre-release excitement, notes from the cutting room floor, as well as the community hijinx on the Sporum. It all culminates in the ballad of the Hugmonster, a tale of trust, betrayal, and pedophiliac forum mascots like no other. We also reminisce about old internet forums because it really just was that kind of episode.Time Stamps:Whatcha Playing00:00 Assassin's Creed Valhalla (2020)09:30 Hades (2020) and genre brethren17:46 Yu-Gi-Oh! In the twenty-first episode of Otaku Brothers, Ryan and Rusty continue and finish Supermassive Game’s Until Dawn on PS4. FULL SPOILERS AHEAD. You’ve been warned. They had a heck of time, and both received completely different endings. Rusty only had 3/8 people survive…Ryan saved 6. There are no heroes here, only villains. After talking about Until Dawn for nearly 45 minutes, the guys take a few listener questions, ranking the Smash Bros. series of games, while also talking at length about their most disappointing video games of all time. Looking at you Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Later on in the show, the guys dive deep into all things Super Smash Bros. They dissect the recent Smash Nintendo Direct, argue about it’s highs and lows, and ponder why Pirahana Plant made the cut, while Waluigi will forever live in his brother's shadows. Enjoy!
