INTRODUCTIONHave you ever wondered how to determine if a bottle is truly reusable? And if it is, what steps need to be taken both upstream and downstream to transform this concept into a practical reality? The significance of a Reuse logo extends beyond just the consumer – it holds relevance for producers, stores, collectors, and washing companies alike. Join us in exploring the reasons behind the necessity of a Reuse logo. The “Reuse logo for bottles and more” is the 4th audio clip of the “Certifications Spotlight: Truths and Traps” series. Like the others, it unravels the mysteries behind one of the logos you find on the packaging. Let's equip you with knowledge and critical thinking to decipher:its meaning, its application, its grey areas, and its pros and cons.Spoiler alert: this one is still a young logo and fairly positive!HERE ARE THE RECOMMENDED RESOURCES The website of Réseau Vrac et Réemploi (fusion between Réseau Vrac and Réseau Consigne): https://reseauvracetreemploi.org/ The website of ALPES CONSIGNE : https://alpesconsigne.fr/ The source to find members of France Consigne and the map of this national association which allows you to know where to return containers identified as reusable thanks to the logo: https://franceconsigne.fr/ The sources to find shops that collect reusable packages: https://www.reseauconsigne.com/cartographie/ The communication agency Atelier Kaboom: https://atelier-kaboom.com/ Previous episodes mentioned:Episode 46: “Water-free tablets and reusable bottles: Rethinking product and packaging pairing” with Frédérique Drouin of Myni: https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep46-non-toxic-products-water-free-tablet-reusable-bottles Episode 10: “A low-tech deposit system to expand zero-waste food businesses” with Marie Jemine of L'Empoteuse: https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep10-low-tech-depositEpisode 8: “Ready to rock with zero-waste office canteens?” with Jérémie Lambin of Freddy met Curry: https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep08-zero-waste-office-canteens Episode 50: “From single-use to reuse: Shaping the era of refillable packaging, starting with personal care products” with Jo-Anne Chidley of Beauty Kitchen and Reposit: https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep50-single-use-reuse-refill-returns-service-cosmetics Episode 36: The bulk: How to free products and consumers from the packaging? with Célia Rennesson of Réseau Vrac & Elsa Bortuzzo of Yokoumi: https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep36-bulk-network-packaging-free-products-consumers Le Fourgon (a delivery system of returned drinks at home): https://www.lefourgon.com/ The website of the New European Reuse Alliance (New ERA): https://www.newreusealliance.eu/ The AGEC law: La loi anti-gaspillage pour une économie circulaire: https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/loi-anti-gaspillage-economie-circulaire LEKO: https://www.leko-organisme.fr/ CITEO: https://www.citeo.com/ The old 5 stars bottles for reuse: https://www.luckyfind.fr/annonces/122136-lot-12-bouteilles-a-etoile-annees-650-70 Article about Coca-Cola choices (Cash investigation from 2018): https://www.zerowastefrance.org/cash-investigation-sur-le-plastique-notre-decryptage/ WHERE TO FIND CECILE FORGUE?Her LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/Cécile-forgue-763a6b69/ABOUT Cécile Forgue from ALPES CONSIGNEWith her academic background as an engineer and her personal goal to reduce packaging waste, Cécile Forgue decided in 2019 to work on developing a reuse system, convinced that glass packaging can have a much better impact on the environment than currently with the recycling system they have in France. Therefore she joined a citizen movement around this topic and co-founded ALPES CONSIGNE in 2020. She is now really glad to see the reuse system grow and to notice that even eco-organisms seem to get into working order to make reuse a reality and the norms for the upcoming years. Packaging reuse has become a reality in the past few years in France and has beautiful days forward.PODCAST MUSICSpecial thanks to Joachim Regout who made the jingle. Have a look at his work here. Jo Chidley is one of those forces of nature, unconstrained by the way things are usually done. As the co-founders of Beauty Kitchen, she and her partner refused venture capital, keeping their business free to become a B-Corp and to put people and planet ahead of profit. She's dedicated to producing the best outcome for the people who work for her as well as for the people who buy her products. And in the process of finding the best ways forward, she came across the horror of single use packaging and the devastation it's causing both in terms of the extraction and the post-use pollution. So Jo founded 'Re' to find ways to bring 'reuse' back into the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' triad. Now, she's invited to Davos to speak about the way this could transform the vast global packaging industry. So in this week's podcast, we talked about why this is essential to transforming our world, and how it could work. Jo has ideas that seem (and are) innovative now, but ten years from now, will be the way things are done. With enthusiasm, integrity and a great deal of humour, she offers solutions to the meta-crisis that rely on each one of us changing behaviour - and she's devoting her life to making it possible - indeed inevitable - that we do. Bio: Jo Chidley is a circular economy expert, chemist, herbal botanist, and co-founder of Beauty Kitchen and Re. Founded in 2014, Beauty Kitchen is the highest scoring B Corp in the UK beauty industry and it's changing the face of the beauty industry with its aim to create the most effective, natural, and sustainable beauty products in the world. Jo went on to found Re, a company devoted to reducing the mountains of waste from our global $1tr annual single use packaging industry. As one of the pioneers of sustainable beauty, Jo and her company have accelerated the transition to Reuse through sustainable innovation by implementing Cradle to Cradle design into Beauty Kitchen's circular approach. Jo's been instrumental in developing the world's first closed-loop solution for beauty packaging and powered the service behind the ground-breaking Re programme which is resuable packaging for personal care brands & retailers. Beauty Kitchen is recognised on the UK's 50 Most Disruptive Companies list and has won numerous industry awards, including ‘Who's Who in Natural Beauty'.Jo has won multiple industry awards, including the Natwest Everywoman Award in the Brand of the Future Category and was recognised as one of the 10 most influential people in Natural Beauty in the UK. She's been featured in the likes of ELLE, Woman & Home magazine and BBC News and is a founding member of the Global Advisory Board for Sustainable & Natural Cosmetics. Imagine shopping in two years from now for anything from your favourite nut milk to face cleanser and struggling to see products on the shelves housed in plastic packaging. Futuristic perhaps, but it may arrive in a store near you sooner than you think if pioneering entrepreneur Jo Chidley, the founder of sustainable, natural personal care brand Beauty Kitchen, has her way. Jo's latest venture ReRe, an amibitious return, refill, repeat scheme, is tackling the seemingly impossible by championing a far-reaching reuse revolution. Jo and co-founder Stuart Chidley set up ReRe not only to implement cradle-to-cradle design into Beauty Kitchen's own products, but also as the world's first closed-loop solution for packaging through its ground-breaking Re programme and refill stations. Already counting some of the UK's biggest retailers like Asda, Marks & Spencer and Holland & Barrett as participating partners, ReRe is on a mission to change the way brands create packaging and bottle goods, how retailers sell almost anything, and how consumers shop. Join Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier as she interviews Jo Chidley, a circular economy expert, chemist, herbal botanist, and co-founder of Beauty Kitchen, the highest scoring B Corp in the UK beauty industry. This episode shows just how the power of the collective – manufacturers, retailers and consumers – can drive a truly circular economy in packaging.
On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Emily Redfearn, independent illustrator, animator and designer, to talk about her business which she started in 2020 after becoming a freelancer at a very difficult time. KEY TAKEAWAYSIt's taken me a long time to develop my own style and it is something that's ever changing and evolving, but it's something that so many people struggle with. Some people like your style to be diverse where others want to hone in on a specific visual aesthetic and everyone wants to be unique and different. But, it's inevitable in this day and age that nothing's entirely unique or different, some things will break that mould. But something I've come to realise is that I should be doing what makes me happy rather than what's going to change the world and how can I be immortalised? I can't choose what my favourite piece of work for a brand is. I've always been in quite varied roles doing multiple things. I love doing book covers, I love doing animations, I really enjoyed the documentary I worked on for Quorn, but it's really hard to say because there are different benefits to all of them. One of the biggest challenges as a freelancer is making time for yourself, giving yourself the boundaries between work and personal and letting yourself have that holiday, whether it's a day or a week. It's easy to neglect if you run your own business, you want to succeed and get more work. I wish I'd thought about budgeting for tax better, it's something people don't really talk about. It needs to be like a bill you pay every month to put aside for your tax and pension. But, I have an accountant who helps me to take a portion off each job to put aside now rather than leaving it til I needed to pay it and scraping it all together. Maths has always been such a struggle for me and I think it is the same for a lot of creatives. BEST MOMENTS‘Who am I trying to please? Is it the art directors, clients, my peers, is it something where people will remember me and is bigger than myself? Asking those questions has got me nowhere, in the end I've thought about what makes me happy? What do I enjoy doing the most? Through a process of elimination, I've found what's most fun for me to do: animation, fruit character, character design, illustration.'‘You can't force things; you've got to try it ‘til it feels right.'‘The five-day working week doesn't work today, what the hell's that about?! I can't imagine doing a regular week, 9-5 with an hour break. I like a two hour lunch so I can go on a long walk with the dog.'‘Set yourself lists to do so you don't go to bed and can't sleep because you're thinking about what you've got to do.' ABOUT THE GUESTEmily Redfearn is an illustrator, animator & designer based in Sheffield, UK. Taking her company to the next level, Heather then used her available infrastructure to help others develop their own beauty brands by offering a Brand Incubator and Accelerator Program including full turn key coaching, retail ready manufacturing, and making it affordable for people who really want to launch a brand but don't know where to begin. She says, “I have nearly ten years of experience and I can help anyone in the program get onto wholesale sites, in retailers, and so much more.” As she prepares to launch more new products, schedule appearances, and explore new collaborations, Heather reveals this is just the beginning of a new era for Beauty Kitchen.

Heather Marianna from Bravo’s “Tour Group” Steps Behind The Rope. What? You don’t remember that show? Neither does Heather. Ok she does, she has just tried to block it out of her mind. We discuss how she showed up for “Tour Group” expecting a bunch of hot young singles and, well, that isn’t quite what she got. She discusses what happens when you show up to film a reality TV show for Bravo and just don’t feel like filming it. Hint: Producers and Bravo don’t take lightly to such things. We also talk about Heather’s recent appearances on 90 Day Fiancé. Do tell. She does. Heather knows a thing to two about having a fiancé. She has been engaged thirteen, yes, that is correct, thirteen times. Besides starting on several reality TV shows, Heather is a reality TV junkie and also knows many of our favorite Housewives. We discuss it all RHOBH, RHONY, RHOC. Speaking of RHOC, Heather is very good friends with Jesus Jugs herself, Miss Alexis Bellino. Don’t let Heather’s playful attitude fool you though. She is CEO and Boss B of Beauty Kitchen, an all natural beauty line which is the “go too” product for all of our favs such as Lisa Vanderpump, Brandi Glanville, Emily Simpson and Gina Kirschenheiter. Heather is filled with stories from Behind The Rope and is more than happy to share. In this episode, Luke goes inside with Heather Marianna to learn about 5 non intuitive things one should know to succeed in the CBD industry. Heather Marianna sky rocked in popularity with the launch of her Beauty Kitchen YouTube series in 2012 where she showcased simple, do-it-yourself beauty recipes made with common kitchen household ingredients which generated a powerful following of more than 3 million viewers. Beauty Kitchen products include a variety of collagen eye gels, face masks, lip masks, body scrubs soaks and more. In 2019, the brand added a CBD line under their umbrella, which skyrocketed in popularity immediately.
Did you know that your skin is the largest organ on your body and what you put on your skin can significantly affect your health? Heather Marianna is the creator of Beauty Kitchen, a plant-based at-home spa and skincare line with clean ingredients free of chemicals, sulfates, and harsh parabens. Beauty Kitchen started in 2012 as a YouTube channel where Heather would demonstrate DIY beauty treatments using simple, all-natural ingredients found in most kitchens to educate the masses about the importance of knowing what you are putting on your skin. The Early Years Heather grew up in beautiful San Diego, California. Her grandmother raised her until she was old enough to go to college. She attended the University of Indianapolis in Indiana. After graduating from college, she worked in a few businesses until she was offered a job as a Vice President of Marketing for a consulting firm in Las Vegas. After quitting her corporate job as VP of Marketing, Heather was out of work for six months, not sure what she was going to do next. She then called some of her friends seeking guidance. Her friends told her she needs to make that “skincare stuff.” Heather then shared how while on vacation in Africa, she noticed one of her friends had a serious acne problem. Heather told her friend that she could “fix it if you let me”. The friend agreed, so Heather went down to the kitchen, gathered up all the stuff she was interested in for natural and spiritual healing, applied it to her friends face, and her friend’s face cleared up in 2 days. Her friends then encouraged her to pursue this line of work professionally. It was after this encouragement that Heather created the Beauty Kitchen YouTube channel. Beauty Kitchen YouTube Channel The channel quickly garnered millions of views, and soon after, the actual product line was born. Heather has appeared on over 85+ national TV news segments demonstrating her all-natural and easy-to-do at-home beauty treatments. She was just recently named “the Nevada Female Leader Making Moves in The West” by The Ladders.com, and she was also named an “Inspirational Female Executive to Follow” by The LuxurySpot.com magazine. Heather believes her products are better than other so-called “natural” products because she owns the manufacturing of the products and oversees the ingredients that are put into it. Heather has been approached by Target, Wholefoods, and other significant retailers but refused to send her products to a warehouse, where in her words, “they would be sitting for months” at a time. The only way her products could stay on the shelves for that amount of time is to have preservatives in it. Heather refuses to compromise her products or her reputation. Private Labeling Heather also shared that her company does private labeling. You can sell hand sanitizer and other products from the Beauty Kitchen, with your brand’s name attached to it. Giving Back Heather Marianna is very involved in giving back to her community and abroad. She distributes hand sanitizers and other products to the kids in the local schools. She has also traveled to Africa on several occasions for a month to volunteer with the local communities in Kenya and Tanzania. Heather plans on spending more time volunteering in Africa and speaks highly of the experience. COVID-19 Long before COVID-19 hit, Heather had been selling natural hand sanitizers. She has donated tons of hand sanitizers. She recently donated 250 essential worker boxes worth at least $200 each with a $100.00 gift card. Fitness Heather believes that exercise and eating healthy are also good for your skin, and that’s why she exercises at least five days per week. She recently placed a kettlebell in her room so she can squat while watching television. Heather wants to put on more weight, so her plan is to take in more healthy calories If you’re looking for truly safe and natural products that are good for your skin and your health, look no further than Heather Marianna’s Beauty Kitchen.
As the impact of COVID-19 is felt across the globe, and with the reported cases of the corona virus spreading rapidly across Canada and the US, Primo proudly introduced a line of hand sanitizers in collaboration with Beauty Kitchen to help mitigate the spread of germs. The directors of Primo are passionate about wanting to help their local communities fight the spread of germs by manufacturing the “Primo Clean” hand sanitizer and giving it away for free. Grab your favourite beverage and have a listen.

Kris talks with Angela Kim, founder and owner of Savor Beauty. They discuss what motivates Angela and what has been the most challenging aspect to growing and scaling her business. Angela Jia Kim’s passion for beauty began with her mom. “Koreans are obsessed with their skin, and my mom always had something new sent over from her sisters in Seoul,” she says. “I would play with her creams that were filled with ingredients like gold and silkworm cocoons.” Angela spent her early career as an award-winning concert pianist, until one day, onstage in front of hundreds of people, a so-called natural lotion she had applied made her break out in hives. Horrified, she began to study ingredients and craft her own skin care products in her kitchen. “I added luxury ingredients with tremendous skin benefits like champagne, caviar, and truffles,” she says. “I infused them with organic extracts for anti-aging results.” She started gifting these products to friends, and they wanted to buy them as gifts for their friends. She became the “accidental entrepreneur.” "I wanted to incorporate the Korean beauty rituals that I grew up with. But as a busy mom and wife living the gorgeous chaos of New York City, I needed flawless skin in a New York minute. And it must be organic, and it must work." Now Angela runs a group of holistic facial spas in New York City's West Village and Upper West Side, and in upstate New York. She continues to develop luxe organic products in the Beauty Kitchen with her team of Savor Spa Estheticians. Her Dollars & Scents initiative hires women who are transitioning back into the workforce, by giving training and tools to develop new skills. They make and ship the beauty creams fresh from the Hudson Valley in New York. Angela Jia Kim is a former concert pianist, wife to a Swissman who loves to brew craft beer in his spare time, and mom to a second grader CEO and a yellow lab named Ella Fitzgerald. They live in New York City's Upper West Side. What you'll find in this episode: What it is that drives Angela to continue to excel and grow and take on new challenges. What the big areas are that you need to be conscious of as a woman who runs her own business. What the hardest part was of bringing other people into the business. Angela’s biggest insight to share with women around accountability. [110] When it comes to hosting a salon retail demo we picture incredibly well-displayed merchandise accompanied by free wine, canapés, live music and a big budget; a very, very big budget. Yes, retail events are a fantastic way of showcasing your salons inventory and for your team to demonstrate their expertise when it comes to products used in treatments. However, a no expenses spared approach isn't always the best way to go about rocking a successful retail demo. In fact, it could do more damage than you think. In this episode, Katie Lowndes, founder of Beauty Sale Mate and Katie’s Beauty Kitchen, will take you through the pros and cons of hosting a retail demo and more importantly, how it can be done on a shoestring budget. We met Jo Chidley, beauty entrepreneur and founder of Beauty Kitchen, effective, natural, and sustainable beauty, almost a year ago and have been stalking her ever since to give us some airtime. We are so excited to have caught up with her in her busy schedule running a multi-million turnover business from her native Scotland. Jo has won multiple industry awards, including the Natwest Everywoman Award in the Brand of the Future Category and was recognised as one of the 10 most influential people in Natural Beauty in the UK. She’s been featured in the likes of ELLE, Woman & Home magazine and BBC News and is a founding member of the Global Advisory Board for Sustainable & Natural Cosmetics. Jo was voted Nr 2 in the 2018 Who’s Who of Natural Beauty. In this episode of Green Beauty Conversations, Jo takes us back to her early days in the beauty business, and talks us through her start-up strategies and how she grew from small beginnings to where Beauty Kitchen is today. We realised talking to Jo that while some connections and opportunities come through sheer luck, there are many others that are out there for the taking, if you know when and where to look for them. These include free business advice and numerous sources of funding. Jo and her husband knew they wanted to start a sustainable beauty business and spotted a gap in the sustainable, natural beauty market between the "fun of Lush and the efficacy of Neal's Yard", as Jo describes their niche. However, even though hugely successful now, Beauty Kitchen started small and took its time to thrash out that market niche and point of difference. Jo tells us that her big break came in a rushed, rather impromptu but nonetheless very cleverly pitched 10-minutes to a retail buyer over a coffee in Starbucks. The beauty entrepreneur has to know how to plan and yet be super calm and flexible at a moment's notice to make the most of golden opportunities. Listen to Jo's experience, infectious energy and sound advice and you'll gain invaluable inside tips from a seasoned beauty entrepreneur. In this episode, you'll gain beauty entrepreneur tips including: Don't rush your market research and the ground work needed to map your business model. Early sales at markets and fairs might seem a time waste but realise that the feedback you get and the resilience you gain personally from these experiences can help you define a better business and products later on. You need to be curious and do your research and have your antenna tuned to funding and networking opportunities. There are more funds out there for start-ups that you might think, from free business advice to grants. Use your gut feeling too. If you have a product ready for market, but your 6th sense and market research is telling you it's not quite the right time for it to be understood, hold back. Start slowly but surely educating your market first and then try again. If your product or business doesn't succeed in its early days, learn to "fail fast, fail cheaply and move on and learn from it". A wise entrepreneur knows to cut their losses, be strengthened by the experience and save their energy to start again, differently. Key take-out from this episode on becoming a beauty entrepreneur are: One opportunity often leads to another. Once you've gained one pot of funding, won one small award or some seed funding, you start to get noticed and to notice other sources of business know-how and start-up funding available to you at low or even no cost. Retailers, bank managers, and other entities you might wish to approach as you build your business are generally time poor. Try scripting out standard one-, three- and five-minute pitches that say everything important for your audience to know. Edit these pitches for different audiences. Getting hands-on and showing how your products work and how they differentiate themselves can do more than words on Powerpoint slides sometimes. So, get creative with your approaches to third parties. Seek out networking events and communities with like-minded businesses; someone will no doubt have had your issues and be able to offer mutual help. Sustainable business is not a trend but a new way of doing business. See how you can implement sustainable business practices transparently and ethically into your processes and products, whether in terms of packaging or moves to zero waste. Do what you can when you can. Small transparent steps are better than rushing and then not being able to deliver on promise. In this episode, Jo mentions several funding entities and other resources: Entrepreneur Handbook - a complete list and guide to small business funding in the UK. Entrepreneurial Spark - accelerator, intrapreneur and mindset enabler organisation and network. Startup Grind - global community of entrepreneurs.
