When Matt Swihart started Double Mountain Brewery in 2007, his vision was to sell beer in the most ecologically sustainable way possible: in reusable bottles, which would be returned, cleaned and refilled, to be sold again. He says it wasn’t a new idea at all - this was common for all kinds of beverages in the early 20th century. And it wasn’t even novel - in other countries, refillable beverage containers occupy a solid share of the market. Nevertheless the regional infrastructure didn’t exist, so the company started small and took its time. The game changed in 2018 when the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative partnered with Double Mountain to help develop standard refillable glass beer bottles that any brewery in the state could use. Now, the Newberg company Revino is working with a number of vintners to put their wine in its returnable, refillable bottles. And while the company is still scaling up all the infrastructure needed, it’s gotten significant traction already, with Willamette Valley Vineyards announcing its rollout of over 1500 cases of one of its Pinot Noirs being released in Revino bottles. We talk with Double Mountain Brewery’s Matt Swihart and Revino cofounder Adam Rack about the significant environmental benefits of glass bottles over other kinds of containers, and the role they see refillables playing more broadly in helping states meet climate goals.

Stamena's co-founder is her daughter, which occasionally means sparks with their differing yet complementary approaches to business. The first thing they did was research the market, to validate their idea and strengthen the vision. Then they found a shop to rent and purchased stock but just before the agreement signing, the owner pulled out. At this point, they were bootstrapping and got a small startup loan from the British Business Bank. As many founders do, Stamena underestimated how much capital they were actually going to need in the very beginning. So they crowdfunded and owe much of their success to showing their loyal community a burning passion for the business.Looking back, Stamena believes she made a mistake in not enlisting experts to help with the marketing of the crowdfund. As a new business owner, spending money can feel like a luxury. Changing your mindset to think big and getting professional support to help with your fundraise is Stamena's top piece of advice to budding entrepreneurs. How to use your passion to win investors overHow to remove a ‘fearful' mindset Why you should never neglect your health and wellbeing during a fundraise

Welcome to Episode 34! Show Notes: https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep34 I just love chatting to really inspiring entrepreneurs who are just driven by passion and purpose, not just to build a brand, but to make a real impact. I also think it's really fascinating chatting to people at all stages of their business journey. So I hope you'll forgive me for sounding like a kid in a candy shop when I say that today's guest is bringing multiple levels of innovation to the beauty industry, is a living ball of passion for her impact inspired by being a breast cancer survivor herself and we get to peak in to her brand literally weeks after she's opened her online store. Tania Jolley is the Founder of purpose-driven brand Lashes of Change. She takes us on a journey from the seed of an idea, through personal calamity, fighting an industry supply chain that said it couldn't be done, to launching Australia's first refillable beauty brand. I truly hope you find our discussion as inspiring as I did!

In this Green Beauty Opinion, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier shares the stories behind a poll she ran on refillable beauty. When asked whether they would go out of their way to clean, return and refill beauty packaging, some 75% of respondents said a resounding yes. While this is an encouraging sign, Lorraine paints a realistic picture of what is actually involved in realising a future where refillable beauty is the norm, not the exception. Some respondents commented that they simply didn't have time to go out of their way to make those refill trips. Others said beauty products were a luxury for them and they wanted shiny new packaging to complete their consumer experience. One said that reuse and refill was better suited to household cleaning products than beauty. However, Lorraine remains ever the optimist that refillable and reusable beauty packaging will prevail for the planet's sake. She challenges us to change our beauty consumer habits and help make refills the norm.
Corporate sustainability initiatives are critical to the health of our planet – but the distance between objectives and regulated execution on a detailed level can sometimes be very broad. Case in point: Worthington Industries, the last U.S. based manufacturer of lightweight recyclable cylinders for transporting refrigerants. Because their cylinders are used to transport hydrofluorocarbons (or HFCs), they're on a collision course with the EPA… cue the drama. Caren McNamara of Conscious Container and Matt Swihart of Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery were both inspired by seeing reuse/refill operations in action on their worldwide travels – and wanted to bring these systems to life in the U.S. Now they are pioneering beverage refill in the beer and wine industries. In this week's episode, they share both the enthusiasm and challenges they have encountered, plus why the economic and environmental benefits make it all worthwhile – especially if we can get a national bottle bill on board. Less is more so the saying goes, but one innovative beauty products' company is turning this on its head and offering 'more for less' with its inspirational refillable beauty scheme. Meow Meow Tweet, a US-based vegan, low-waste, personal care company has come up with a refill scheme that makes it easy for its customers to buy skincare, haircare and bodycare products in bulk at a discount. Can you imagine buying face cleanser in bulk? Meow Meow Tweet could and it decided its brand mission was to help customers reduce overall consumption by ditching lots of little pots and going for bulk buys. As the average woman beauty consumer uses about 16 product a day, you can get a feel for just how unsustainable the beauty business is. By buying more but less often and at a discount, its loyal refill customers have helped Meow Meow Tweet to embrace circular systems of reuse that can eliminate waste entirely. Founded in 2009, Meow Meow Tweet was certainly ahead of its time in acting on sustainability. It was the first brand to introduce 100 percent backyard compostable deodorant sticks and lip balms. Meow Meow Tweet is also a certified plastic negative and climate neutral company. In this second podcast looking at beauty refill success stories, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier talks to Tara Pelletier, co-founder of Meow Meow Tweet about the company's simple, sustainable slow beauty refill model. Listen in to hear about how one beauty company is quietly doing big things for sustainability.
Heather Florio, CEO of Desert Harvest, a maker of aloe vera-based nutritional supplements, will introduce a refillable smart bottle this summer. Desert Harvest is moving away from single-user plastic pill packaging in favor of compostable plant-based refill bags and smart bottles that feature Bluetooth connectivity and an app that helps customers manage refills and keep the packaging out of landfills. The container will be available for use with other medications, and can help caregivers track whether elderly patients have taken their daily doses on time. Heather also explains how the company's refined aloe products relieve the symptoms of interstitial cystitis, a debilitating disease that primarly affects women. One of the questions Earth911 gets most often is how to recycle or donate prescription medicine bottles made from a type of #5 plastic that is seldom recycled. In 2022, Americans are expected to fill almost 4.8 billion prescriptions and purchase another $42 billion worth of dietary supplements using packaging that goes mostly unrecycled. The Desert Harvest refill program, which include a refill package that is home-compostable, is a unique solution; and the company will accept end-of-life bottles for recycling through a mail-in program. You can learn more about Desert Harvest at https://www.desertharvest.com/

On Green Beauty Conversations, we have covered some challenging concepts in sustainable beauty such as the circular economy, carbon neutral and climate neutral beauty and zero waste. We admit these are not easy to grasp, but together with some incredible guests, this podcast has tried to unpacked these topics in simple terms. While we might all nod in agreement with the ideals and aspirations driving sustainability concepts, just how do we in the indie beauty world make them part of our daily lives and business? Isn't the circular economy something that only big beauty brands with significant research teams and funds can put into practice? In this episode, we hear from one indie beauty entrepreneur whose actions answer this question with a resounding 'No'. We find out that small brands can do just as much to reduce, recycle and reuse and retain resources in the economy as big businesses. It just takes vision, drive and some lateral thinking. Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier speaks to indie beauty entrepreneur Tammy Facey who single handedly pioneered her own circular economy scheme. In 2017 Tammy founded Jim + Henry, the UK's first brand for Afro and curly hair type to create a leave-in hair conditioner comprised of only eight ingredients. Committed to sustainable beauty, Tammy set herself the mission of building a refillable beauty business. Listen in to her story and discover how small indie beauty brands can play their part in the circular economy too.

Hey everyone! It's episode 290, so that means it's time for another solo show featuring me. Every 10 episodes I do a solo show or feature an extra special guest, like my husband. Can you believe I have come out with a new episode every single Wednesday since I started this show in summer 2016? If you count the bonus episodes, I've done, it's probably more than 300 shows. If you're new here, welcome! If you're a returning listener, thank you so much for your support. Today's show is all about being more sustainable and living with less. I'm sharing 25 simple tips for living with less and living more sustainably. 4:05 – Crunchy-lite I'm not a hippy tree-hugger, but I like to think of myself as crunchy-lite. I can't fit all my trash in a mason jar, but I think we produce way too much waste. We dispose of our stuff without thinking about the impact that that stuff has on the environment. 5:26 – Dandora dump A few years ago I went to Kenya and got to visit the Dandora dump, the largest landfill in east Africa. It was one of the most horrifying things I have ever seen. Tons of trash, including brand new shirts with logos of the losing Super Bowl team, were dumped there. 25 simple tips for living with less and living more sustainably 9:10 – Reusable straws 10:32 – Reusable water bottle, coffee tumbler 11:15 – Zero-waste or refillable bath products 12:52 – Refillable soaps and house cleaners 14:31 – Recycling bin in the bathroom 15:04 – Reusable grocery bags 16:19 – Reusable produce bags 16:57 – Local produce boxes or farmer's markets 17:35 – Reusable beeswax plastic wrap 18:33 – Reusable snack bags and lunch containers 19:36 – Cloth napkins 20:44 – Handkerchiefs 21:20 – Reusable muslin face cloths 22:16 – Washable makeup remover cloth 22:59 – Menstrual cup 23:52 – Cloth diapers 24:48 – Roll-free toilet paper or bidets 26:09 – Rechargeable batteries 26:15 – Shop consignment 26:38 – Repair clothing 27:47 – Sustainable toys 28:14 – Go paperless 28:37 – Unsubscribe from mailing lists 29:05 – Borrow books from the library FEATURED QUOTES You truly have absolutely no idea the kind of impact you have on my life and this community. It means so much to me. I'm not like a hippy tree-hugger, but I like to think of myself as crunchy-lite. We dispose of our stuff without thinking about the impact that that stuff has on the environment. Thank you to our partner of the show! Are you looking to clean up your household cleaning products this year? MamaSuds would like to help! The best way is to simply start with one product. Every time you run out of a specific cleaning product, replace it with a non-toxic one. Another tip, purchase a product that has multiple uses. Caren McNamara founded Conscious Container in 2017 to bring the refillable glass bottle marketplace to the wine industry (pre-WWII, we re-used most packaging. Other countries kept doing it, but in the US that stopped). The goal: reduce single use packaging waste and turn glass bottles into multi-use vessels by setting up an infrastructure for collection, cleaning, inspection, and re-use. Caren was a project and change management manager for a major tech company but she left that behind when she saw a hole in the marketplace for refillable and reusable glass, and the opportunity to make a big impact on the beverage industry. In the show we talk about we talk about how we wound up throwing away assets like glass, rather than re-using them, and how things like lightweight packages (reduce) and recycling are less effective than the third “r” – reuse - which is usually the most efficient of the three. Caren discusses the opportunities for Conscious Container to do good, what it will take for her operation to become full-scale, and offers ideas of things we can do to help Conscious Container's mission, like asking at tasting rooms about refillable bottle programs, requesting that wine clubs look into using refillable bottles, and keeping up to date on new developments which would allow us to participate in the re-use economy. Shout out to April Nalle of Nalle Winery for being an innovator, using this program and for introducing me to Caren and all the cool stuff she's doing! Susie has been running an online business for about 3 years and she's looking for the best refillable journal. While watching a show on entrepreneurship, Susie learned about the power of journaling. Finding the perfect journal that will suit her daily routine is important to developing a new habit. Let me know if you can relate to these points. You've always heard that journaling is a great habit to developUnderstanding why journaling is important will help you pick up this habitYou are not quite sure if you're a paper journal person or if digital is betterKnowing what to write has been a huge obstacle for you If only there was a way to get your head around the importance of journaling as well as when to do it. In this post, you'll learn how journaling can help you achieve your revenue and life goals quickly and easily. You'll also learn about over 10 different journaling techniques and when to apply them. Disclosure: Please note that this post may contain affiliate links which means that if you buy one of my recommended products I get paid a commission for sharing the link at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products that I have tried myself and have experienced success. Why Journal If you're like me you've probably been thinking of journaling for a few years. However, you've never got into it because it didn't seem to be a necessity until now. Did you know that there is scientific evidence that shows the health benefits of journaling? According to PsychCentral, here are 5 health benefits of journaling. Solve problems more efficientlyKnow yourself betterReduce stressResolve disagreement with othersClarify your thoughts and feelings The two that jump out at me from this list are problem-solving and clarifying my thoughts and feelings. If there isn't anything on that list from PsychCentral that you find motivating, here are 6 more benefits of journaling from Kaiser Permanente. Gain self-confidenceFind inspirationAchieve goalsStrengthen memoryTrack progress and growthImprove writing and communication. You have to admit that these 11 benefits of journaling are mind-blowing. A lack of goal achievement is something that you might have encountered at different stages in your life. It is also something that you hear friends and family experience regularly. Looking back, do you think that you might have experienced more successes if you were journaling? Types of Journaling Techniques Did you know that there are several different types of journaling? Depending on the technique you would like to use will dictate the best refillable journal that will suit your needs. Let's spend some time looking at a list of journaling techniques. Art journalDream journalingReflection journalMorning pagesGratitudeUnsent letterFree writingListsWorst case scenarioOne line a dayPlan your dayReading journalBullet journaling At this point, you're probably surprised by the big list of journaling techniques available for you. In order to understand the best one to use for your needs, let's take a closer look. Art Journal As the name suggests, having an art journal will allow you to express yourself better using visual pieces. These pieces can include sketches, collages, scrapbooking, doodles, experiments and inspiration. So, if you're more inclined to express yourself visually then art would be a great option for you. Dream journaling This would be one that will rarely ever work for me because I forget my dreams all the time. Actually, it is advised that with dream journaling you write down whatever you can remember and over time your memory will improve. The challenge I find with this journaling technique is that my dreams are too weird and I prefer not to remember them. Lol!! The best refillable journal for this technique would be the one with many pages. Reflection Journaling As you can imagine,

Frans was born in South Africa. Apartheid was part of the culture. Signs designated Whites only for bathrooms, restaurants, and beaches. Job unemployment was high and crime followed desperate people. Frans grew up on a farm. His family was targeted for a farm murder. His brother was hijacked, and was lucky to come out alive. Frans came to the United States in his early twenties. He immediately loved the feeling of safety. He was shocked by the amount of food available, and Frans fell in love with refillable sodas with ice. Frans is married with three children. He became an American citizen in 2013. He lives in the state of Utah. To Frans, America means family and opportunity.
My next guest Claudia worked in financial services for nearly a decade. Unfulfilled and miserable She decided to take some time off to work on an idea that had been niggling in the back of her head for a few years: The milkman re-imagined for beauty. We talked about: Simple change in your beauty routine can save thousands of kilos of plastic waste ending up in landfill Moving from a linear to circular business model while retaining convenience, price and quality Staying true to your mission despite the challenges of 2020 Circla contributes to 6 of the UN Development Goals but our main focus is Number 12 - Sustainable consumption and production In her words: This was the start of my journey to starting Circla, born out of frustration on the amount of single-use plastic packaging in my beauty routine. I raised pre-seed investment from Sustainable Ventures and in August last year quit my corporate job for good! The last year has been a rollercoaster, we have pivoted the business model twice due to Covid-19 and now finally about to roll out our new model across the whole of central London. I run the company by myself with help from friends and family. Refillable beauty, delivered to your doorstep. – CIRCLA

In episode 192, Kestrel welcomes Brian Bushell, the cofounder of By Humankind, to the show. A personal care brand, By Humankind’s products are designed to reduce single-use plastic waste from your daily routine. “We really wanted to be able to make an impact — we wanted to allow our customers to truly reduce their own single-use plastic waste function just by going through their morning routine.” -Brian Bushell, Cofounder of By Humankind On this week’s show, Brian shares more on how a scuba diving trip initially inspired him to look further into the global issues surrounding single-use plastic waste. When he discovered that one third of all plastic waste in landfills comes from a personal care product, he saw a need to build a personal care brand that not only cared about creating clean formulas, but also clean containers. Brian explains how he started with one idea — to make a natural deodorant — and worked with a chemist to see if he could build a good product. After working on this for six months, and realizing that they could make it happen, he sought out a cofounder and started building By Humankind. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: 1/3 of all plastic in landfills is from personal care products “We’re about 13 months in, and we’ve already figured out that our community has eliminated 11,000 pounds of single-use plastic waste from going into the environment.” Slow Factory’s post about reduction of emissions over China since COVID-19 Aja Barber’s Instagram post “What About The Garment Workers?”, mentioned in the intro

Anne Helen Petersen (@annehelen) joins Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) this week to talk about exactly what you fear when you return to work or school after the holidays: burnout. They discuss what burnout is doing to Millenials (and younger generations) and why the root of the problem is, you guessed it, capitalism. Finally, they examine what one church has done to combat burnout at its economic root, and how their own relationship to religion has healed their burnout. Thanks to our sponsors! Today is Thursday, February 14, and we’re looking at Haagen-Dazs vs. Ben & Jerry’s.
We kick off the series with Joel Schoening, Community Relations Director with Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, otherwise known as OBRC. OBRC recently launched the first statewide refillable bottle program system in the United States.
Refillable Beer Bottle program at Bottledrop Find Bottledrop Web: bottledropcenters.com Over time, the idea of convenience has been sold to, and taken a priority in our culture. Often, this convenience results in negative effects to our environment. One-time use items like plastic shopping bags, straws, coffee cups are all items that we can use daily and be thrown away. When it comes to the beer world and environmental footprint, the container is a big item to consider. For sure, cans and bottles are recyclable, which offers a reduced impact. There’s also been some debate on the idea that cans are better for the environment than bottles, which we touch on a bit in this interview. One thing that other countries are still doing, which has fallen off the American radar, is the idea of washing and reusing bottles for beverages like beer. This is not a new thing, and it makes total sense right? Enter Nick Munson-Phelps, the refillable program manager for BottleDrop Refill. Nick has been leading an effort in Oregon to design and implement a refillable bottle program that breweries have already started using. Join us on this episode to learn all about the sustainability and benefits of using refillable bottles on this episode of Branding Brews.

Disney might start enforcing its policy on refillable mugs. Run for the hills!
Is the future refillable? When we look at the history of plastics, it's disheartening to realize that only 9% of all plastics ever created have been recycled. Another 12% has been incinerated; a whopping 79%, then, has accumulated in landfills and nature. That's right: your Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker tube circa 1995 is quite likely still somewhere on this planet. Refillable products (like ice cream in stainless steel jars and shampoo bottles refilled in-store) aren't new. But while most people say they want eco-friendly product options, their purchasing behaviors sing a different tune. Consumers tend to prioritize convenience over eco-friendliness, time and time again.Today I speak with Izzy Zero Waste Beauty founder Shannon Goldberg about closed loop consumption. Is packaging the problem, or does the problem lie within our consumption? Here's a preview:[6:00] 2 major barriers to mainstream refillables[11:00] Do refillable products *actually* make a dent in our trash production? What about our oversized environmental woes?[15:00] Refillable products and next-level greenwashing: Why we must expand our collective definition of waste to account for excess carbon emissions from sending back our products[20:00] Are refillable options sanitary in a post-COVID world?Resources mentioned:Loop global reuse platformUse code IZZYF20 at yourizzy.com for 20% off (Thanks, Shannon!)--Thank you to our sponsors!Thrive Market: Head to thrivemarket.com/sustainable for up to $80 in free groceriesSkillshare: Visit skillshare.com/sustainable for your first month freeBetter Help: Visit betterhelp.com/sustainable for 10% off your first monthSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/sustainable-minimalists/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
