Lucinda and Emily are joined by Charmaine Griffiths, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, to reflect on the voluntary sector's female-dominated workforce and the challenges facing women on their path to senior leadership positions.Charmaine stresses her conviction that charities need to be representative of the communities they exist to support. She describes heart disease as a disease of inequality, reflected in the fact that only one in eight cardiologists are women. She acknowledges that more work needs to be done to level the professional playing field for women and minority groups within the voluntary sector, but warns there are few quick fixes to effect the necessary culture changes. Also in the episode, news editor Andy Ricketts recounts how an appeal led by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations to uplift public service contracts as costs rise appears to have fallen on deaf ears at the Treasury.Do you have stories of people whose lives have been transformed for the better thanks to your charity? The 90s were obsessed with what magazine writer Tad Friend would describe as “do me feminism” – and the attendant fear that men could be victims of female sexual aggression. Two films from 1994 married these anxieties to the still-lingering bugaboo of the 80s, the powerful career woman. But though the female stars of The Last Seduction and Disclosure (Linda Fiorentino and Demi Moore) were styled almost identically, the films had very different points of view on the panic over female power.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. In African and Caribbean countries women are more likely to have managerial jobs than in other parts of the world, according to the International Labor Organization.Belarus ranks highest among the European countries listed, coming in 13th, with 50.5% of female managers.Women are most likely to hold managerial positions in human resources, administration, finance, marketing, or public relations. If you are working in Togo, Nigeria, Jordan or a number of countries included in the below list, it is actually more likely that your boss is a woman than a man. This is according to numbers released by the International Labor Organization. Togo led the pack with more than 70 percent of all managerial positions filled by women in 2017. But the numbers also show that only 13 out of all countries reporting these figures to the ILO between 2016 and 2020 have achieved gender parity in leadership positions. The highest-ranking European country is Belarus in rank 13, with 50.5 percent of female managers. Generally, Eastern European countries and former Soviet Republics score high in the ranking as do African and Caribbean nations.https://buff.ly/3tHeqdF The above data is from the World Economic Forum site, titled A woman is most likely to be your boss in these countries. Undeniably this data will continue to grow, widening that gap. So one can safely infer that women will dominate the future of leadership within the corporate space. On this premise, it will be only wise for women to be empowered strategically by developing their leadership skills added to their innate nurturing skills. The above should be approached from a position of collaboration and complementing and not competing with their male counterparts. This is the focus of this episode of the Word Café podcast.  I have the privilege of discussing this with Omobabinrin Adeola Osideko.Support the show

We discuss the frightening term “ladyboss,” the more frightening company “LadyBoss,” stats on women business leaders, and two female tech execs. Blondes probably don't really have more fun, but they do have more high-level management positions. This, and lots of other weird, awful stuff is true when it comes to the obstacles women face in the workplace. We'll talk tokenism, Leaning In (blech), and Theranos, too. There's a pretty narrow path to success for women, and especially for women whose identities have multiple intersecting factors like race, disability, nationality, and age. We strategize how to get more diverse perspectives at the top, and how leaders have to be intentional to make real change. Chrissy Monaco was basically raised at Monaco Ford, her dad's car dealership. Then in January of 2017, she took over as co-owner and new boss—now in charge of men she'd known all her life, some of whom weren't immediately comfortable with it. She knew her task: New leaders have limited time to set a company's culture and get people on board with their vision, before doing so becomes far harder. In this episode, Chrissy takes us through her first, critical year—and the tough decisions it required.
