What makes a nonprofit successful? A lot of things. An engaged donor base, for example. Enthusiastic Board members. A compelling case for support. Those are all necessary to grow your organization and sustain your mission. But a critically important and often overlooked element is the employee. Nonprofits suffer higher turnover than any other sector. The nonprofit turnover rate clocks in at just over 21% and the overwhelming majority of that is voluntary. Surveys show that nearly half of nonprofit employees will seek other jobs by 2025. So what can be done? This is where a successful employee retention strategy comes in. My guest is the one-and-only Kishshana Palmer, Kishshana is CEO of ManageMint Inc. , an organizational development firm focused on helping everyday leaders live well and lead well. In this episode, Kishshana will unravel the secrets behind creating sticky teams and boosting employee retention. Listeners, if you found today's discussion insightful and want to learn more about creating sticky teams and boosting employee retention, don't forget to check out the on-demand training at www.managemint.co/freeresources. Remember, you can watch the Superpowers for Good show on e360tv. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.We recorded this episode in anticipation of airing it on Giving Tuesday; we had to postpone it due to my injury.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Kishshana: My superpower is the ability to see you. So, one of my strengths is individualization.Kishshana Palmer, founder and CEO of ManageMint, a consulting practice that supports social enterprises, nonprofits and governmental entities, especially schools, joined me to discuss her work. She shared insights across a range of topics, but I particularly valued her thoughts about a vexing problem I see occasionally in the impact sector. Changemakers–including me, if I'm being honest–sometimes excuse poor activities in one area as justified by the pursuit of the mission. For example, it isn't that uncommon for climate change-focused folks to get caught failing to adequately consider the impact of their work on disadvantaged communities. Solar panels are commonly sold to affluent folks who can afford it. It makes perfect sense on the one hand but excludes or ignores less wealthy folks' desire to go green, too.Kishshana says, “When you design for marginalized groups, you almost always design for everyone.” By working to help those who might have the most difficulty being a part of what you're doing, you ensure that everyone can. You expand your audience. She likes to apply the principle across the board, from volunteers, employees and board members to the folks you serve and others who may be impacted directly or indirectly by your work.Kishshana has built her success in part by leveraging her superpower–her ability to see individuals.AI Episode Summary* Kishshana Palmer is a leader in the world of nonprofit social enterprise and the CEO, founder, and leader of ManageMint.* ManageMint is a people-focused, equity-centered change management consulting firm that helps organizations run better, achieve their goals, and take care of their employees.* Kishshana emphasizes the importance of celebrating Giving Tuesday by supporting and investing in local nonprofit organizations.* She believes in the power of seeing and understanding individuals, which is her superpower.* Kishshana coaches organizations to cope with the inherent stress of working on big problems by helping them focus on their purpose and long-term plans.* She encourages organizations to include equity and inclusion in their mission and to design for marginalized groups, as this often benefits everyone.* Kishshana shares a specific example of using her superpower to turn around a challenging organization by getting to know the team and their needs, redesigning job descriptions, and promoting from within.* She advises people to focus on their own wellness and understanding their own strengths and weaknesses before trying to see and understand others.* To learn more about Kishshana's work, visit managemint.co or connect with her on social media at @KishshanaPalmer.* Kishshana's work makes a difference by helping nonprofits and social enterprises be more effective in their work, ultimately benefiting the people they serve. How to Develop Seeing Individuals As a SuperpowerKishshana shared the story of working with a troubled impact organization. Folks hadn't had raises in years, turnover was increasing, and disengagement was rising. She came into the organization with an eye toward getting to know each person and helping to find or define a role that would suit them, allowing them all to feel greater self-actualization in the work. That story illustrates the power of seeing individuals. The organization benefited from having everyone individually fill a role that matched their skills, passions and abilities. To learn to see others, Kishshana says a key is to see yourself more completely and objectively, recommending that you form a personal board of advisors. You need to learn to see how your own behavior contributes to challenges in team dynamics. As you begin to look at others, it is essential to look past the surface and focus on motivations, like dreams and passions, that underlie people's actions. Kishshana says that when you adapt your approach to individuals, you can be more effective.By following Kishshana's example and advice, you can see individuals more effectively. With time and practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileKishshana Palmer (she/her):Founder and CEO of ManageMint; CFRE, Board Advisor for Bloomerang, Bloomerang About Bloomerang: Indianapolis-based Bloomerang is the complete donor relationship management solution that helps thousands of small and medium-sized nonprofits deliver a better giving experience and create stable, thriving organizations. What we are loving this week: Sarah is loving June in DC because it is the gayest month, and she went to a burlesque show on a date and hosted a patio party. Sarah wonders about Blanche's dating life. Carrie says it's possible that Blanche went out every night. Carrie is exhausted from sitting on the patio two nights in a row in the TX heat. Carrie thinks about how when she's high people don't laugh at her jokes. Sarah establishes her 3 favorite things to do while high: walk around museum, sleep, and fuck. Carrie recommends doing these all at the same time. Sarah says she's not about that prison life. Sarah is feeling connected and affirmed; it's liberating to not have to deal with her inner conflict anymore. Carrie talked about how she didn't feel like herself when she dressed in a way that was more authentic to her. Sarah supports the small embodiment of self. Carries loves her press-on nails and is into it. Carrie loves a cheap and pretty nail. Sarah realizes, in this moment as she writes the show notes that she put the picture on the previous week's episode. Sarah loves Carrie's nail-ventures. Carrie likes the combo of pretty nails, eyelash and with masculine clothing aesthetic. Sarah doesn't know her color names. Sarah remembers watching kids fight on the playground and getting her period. Carrie got her period a little later and now does not get a period because of her IUD. What We Love About Each Other: Carrie and Sarah have BFF crop tops. Sarah describes the crop top: nude color with white pasties. Carrie's phone thinks it's explicit content. Carrie says the new sign off is Blorp FF. Sarah loves the vibes and the weather of the day on pride. Sarah loves that Carrie is fucking things up just by her sheer presence in spaces. Carrie's therapist labels the “performance” of being in non-inclusive spaces as shuttling. We love each other! Blorp FF! Erica, Katie, Zoe and Melissa are responsible for all of our future decisions. In this episode we take a look at the pilot for The Golden Palace ( 1992) Less than two months after Dorothy's departure,Blanche, Rose, and Sophia sell their Miami house and purchase The Golden Palace, a hotel in the city. The women meet hotel manager Roland, his foster child Oliver, and hotel chef Chuy Castillos. The women learn that the previous owners had fired much of the staff to make the hotel appear profitable, and the hotel has no money to hire new employees. Furthermore, the ladies have only one week to make the hotel's bank note payment, which is dependent on satisfying a group of travel agents booked for the hotel. Sophia and Rose are upset at Blanche for getting them into the situation, but Blanche convinces them that they can operate the hotel and make the business a success. Chuy wants to continue serving Mexican food at the hotel, while Sophia wants to start serving Italian food instead. Chuy quits in frustration, but later asks for his job back, and he and Sophia agree to work together. The women manage to get through the week after hosting the travel agents, making enough money to keep the hotel for another month and hire more staff. Betty White as Rose Nylund, a jack-of-all-trades in the hotel. This series has Rose being of a notably stronger will than her previous incarnation (as Dorothy Zbornak noted in her guest appearance, "When did she become the strong one?"). Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, the main operator of the hotel. Her character traits, particularly her promiscuity and vanity, are significantly toned down in this series, although she retains her Southern charm and generally chipper demeanor. Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo, the hotel's 87-year-old co-chef. In this series, her character is beginning to show signs of senile dementia, and is somewhat kinder and gentler than in the original series. Don Cheadle as Roland Wilson, the hotel's manager and a straight man to the rest of the cast. He is one of only two staff members retained from the previous ownership. Cheech Marin as Chuy Castillos, the other co-chef, and the other staff member held on from the previous ownership. He nearly quits after quarreling with Sophia over Italian vs. Mexican food, but comes back and remains with the staff for the rest of the series run Billy L. Sullivan as Oliver Webb, Roland's foster child (episodes 1–6, 11, 14), a streetwise, arrogant preteen. Oliver appeared in eight episodes before being written out of the series, the character's birth mother (Joely Fisher) retaking custody of him in episode 14. Listen, rate and share. The widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. (1 Timothy 5:6) Pleasure in Death I can't help but think of Blanche Devereaux from The Golden Girls when I read this verse. Blanche was about as feisty a woman in her late-sixties as she probably was in her twenties and thirties. Her entire life revolved around the next man that would sweep her off her feet. Not the way a Christian widow should act. Paul is not saying that every widow should throw herself on her husband's funeral pyre after the funeral. There is still life left for them to live. Life should not revolve around the pursuit of pleasure. Your god is NOT your belly (Philippians 3:19). Life doesn't consist of getting from one pleasure to another. Life revolves around higher pursuits. The widow who lives for pleasure has little room for God. After all, what good will pleasures do if she has no one to share them with? The God-pleasing pleasures of this life are to praise the God who created us and share our joy with everyone around us. Amen.
