In this bonus episode of Insider Interviews, captured during Advertising Week 2023, I spontaneously interviewed three impressive executives on how each injects the human touch to various aspects of culture in media: Sports, Multicultural and Podcasting content. First, Marissa Solis, SVP of Marketing for the NFL, discusses how the NFL is incorporating AI to generate game highlights, enhance player safety and even to to engage younger audiences, all while still maintaining a human touch on and off the field.  "Through the power of AI technology, we were able to take the game in real time and animate it in Toy Story world, so that somebody could be watching the same exact game, but in 'Andy's room.'... We're very excited about the power of the technology, but we know there's a lot of implications. So we always want to proceed with a bit of caution, again, because we don't want to ever lose sight of the human element and the positive human outcomes that could come from the technology."   Next, Bonin Bough, co-founder and Chief Strategy Office of Group Black, emphasizes the importance of reaching all humans through culture and multicultural media investments."An interesting conversation has been the impact of investing in multicultural and diverse audiences and showing real case studies and real business movement.  ... I think for too much, we talk about the societal impact and we forget that at the end of the day, the only place that you source growth is from untapped and underinvested in opportunities and communities." Finally, Kelli Hurley, VP/Global Head of Partnerships at SXM Media, shares insights on injecting the human touch into podcast advertising by partnering with popular personalities like Conan O'Brien and Crime Junkie.  "We're looking at video, we're looking at social, we're looking at events, and we are finding a lot of success in building campaigns that really start from the influencer, from the host themselves, and we splinter it out from there." With a runtime of 20 minutes, this ad hoc episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of technology and human connection. Special shout out to my brother Gregory "Beef" Jones (@ogbeefjones) for inviting me to the Group Black party during SXSW IA last week. Group Black is a company founded by industry legend Bonin Bough to dramatically transform the face of media ownership and investment. Beef and I had been trying to link all day, when he ended up at this party and told my wife and I to come meet him there. He said "They have free drinks, a DJ and some Afrobeats artist will perform." Neither of us knew who we were about to see. Then Yung D3mz hit the stage, straight outta Ghana. It was so refreshing for me to hear this kind of music being represented at SXSW and by a young up and coming talent who has not jumped on the hype train as of yet. I truly felt as if I was witnessing something special. Possibly his first show in the USA, and for a crowd of highly enthusiastic - mostly women - who were dancing and singing along. It was a really special moment for me as ten years ago when I worked for SXSW I took a couple trips to Johannesburg to meet more people from the African music industry and hopefully see SXSW expand into booking more from the continent. That is all easier said than done but in recent years Africa's presence at the conference has grown for sure. So props to SXSW for that. I approached Yung D3mz and talked to him about his music and told him that I was a fan of Fokn Boiz from Ghana and knew their manager, Panji Anoff, and from there he could tell that I knew a little something about this music thing. I met his manager and his crew and invited them to come over and do a podcast, and they actually showed up and this talk is the result. It was a real pleasure to get this young persons perspective on Afrobeats and just life and culture in general. His music can be streamed anywhere you stream music and you should check him out. We are also joined on this episode with his producer Uche B, a force in his own right. Bonin Bough's first flare of marketing genius came at the age of 12, when the executive who would later set the pace for big brands entering online and social channels, launched a magazine in the NYC Public Schools. In college, the physics major built websites for brands, and one millennium-era internet party later, he joked, the vodka fountain and shrimp boat steered him into a marketing career. Bonin built internet practices at two global PR firms, then became the client and a prodder of global CPG companies, like PepsiCo, Mondelez and Kraft, to be digital innovators. You might recall him from the CNBC show, Cleveland Hustles, with LeBron James. And, as Founder of Lockstep Ventures he tackles systemic issues by helping Black founders create scalable businesses that also support their communities. Ventures, which tackles systemic issues by helping Black founders create scalable businesses that also support their communities. In this episode you'll learn: Pack the pipeline, because the ingrained corporate response is to kill what is new, but they can't kill it all. Babe Ruth called his shots, name your next win, because external pressure will help make it happen. “Marketers are like roaches”, they'll infiltrate what you thought was a safe space. Jump in early, ride the bull, first runners have a better shot at winning. To learn something new, walk the outer trade-show booths on closing day, talk to everyone at the mixer.  Thank you, Bonin, for joining me. Give it a listen, and fast forward your marketing mind in about 20 minutes.Presented by Mekanism

"You really have to understand the times we live in and…the things that you push against are the things that make you who you are." Martin Bough is a photographer, a teacher, and a Jazz musician. He has been photographing since 1962 but that is not where this story begins. Martin is 92 years old and he was already an accomplished saxophone player and a highly skilled printing press operator before he took up the camera. Martin is a storyteller and you will not hear me very much in this episode because he has a unique way of talking about his life and how he had to live with and overcome the obstacles of neglect, racism, and exploitation for most of his life. It is a story filled with pain and anger and you will hear some of that life-long pain when Martin speaks. We also talk about Martin's connection to Fundamental Photographs, the science stock photo agency I worked at for 15 years with Kip Peticolas and Richard Megna. Martin's sons, Quavin Evans and Bonin Bough, are currently cataloging his work and you can see the start of that effort on Instagram, linked below. Special thanks go to Bonin Ventures and Executive Assistant, Vanessa Ekin for helping me with the logistics of this recording with Martin Bough. Visit our website to find links to listen to it on iTunes, Stitcher and Google Play or listen to it on SoundCloud below. A little bit about Bonin Bough... Bonin is a man of many titles, he's the Host of LeBron James' TV Show on CNBC, Cleveland Hustle, Author of Txt Me: Your Phone Has Changed Your Life. Let’s Talk about It and -- in partnership with Michael Loeb (Co-Founder of Priceline.com) -- has become a leading seed-stage investor in Messaging startups. Prior to all of this, Bonin was the Chief Media & eCommerce Officer (a Title and role he created for himself) at Mondelez where he led global media buying for the $25 Billion + organization. For someone with so many responsibilities, he's surprisingly accessible. You can text him any time at 646-759-1837. Give it a shot. It might just take a little while for him to reply. On Career Management Bonin optimized each step of his career for Title and Span of Control. The money simply followed. Title was incredibly important as it gave Bonin additional weight and influence in the organization. A senior title became a stepping stone to even bigger opportunities at new companies. For example, because he was a Senior Director at Pepsi, he was recruited as a VP by Kraft and was given control of the organizations entire media buying organization. Later, Bonin leveraged this VP title into a C-Suite title he created himself at Mondelez, creating his own seat at the table as the Chief Media & eCommerce Officer at Mondelez. With a senior title came a larger span of control, which was particularly important for two reasons: The CEO has the largest span of control of an organization. If you aspire for that title one day, having a large span of control will give you the required experienced in building a team and trusting others to eventually one day meet the requirements of being a great CEO. When you have a large span of control, you inherently have the ability to make a much larger impact on an organization because of the breadth of resources you have access to. The larger your impact, the more likely you are to be noticed by senior leadership and promoted up the ranks as a result of your great work. Bonin took this a step further by focusing primarily on the "innovation" side of the business as often put him in a position to deliver breakout successes. Like great Rockstars, "you have to produce hits". Bonin had lots of them. On Great Leadership Bonin's mission as a leader was to be a platform for the success of those on his team. In his eyes, success as a leader was for the people on your team to become better than you. He particularly called out key members of his team such as Cynthia Chen (now Managing Director at General Mills China), Laura Henderson (now SVP of Marketing at BuzzFeed) and Farrah Bezner (now Head of New Business Ventures at Mondelez) who have all progressed to making a major impact in their respective organizations.

This was a heated conversation at SXSW between me and my main man, Bonin Bough, C-level exec and host of CNBC’s Cleveland Hustles with LeBron James. At this talk we discuss brands texting consumers, email newsletters, the importance of time, virtual currency, and personalization when it comes to branding. This one gets heated because we butt heads quite a bit but I’m a big believer in that everything needs to be debated and that’s why this one’s a winner.

And how do brands retool their advertising roster and business to ensure that they are continually chasing maximum reach and ROI on their spend?B.Bonin Bough, Head of Global Media at Mondelez (33rd-largest media buyer in the world), sits down for a fireside chat with Ashley J.
