These two resources document how casual workers at Australia's richest university launched a series of campaigns in 2019 and 2020 which culminated in the back payment of a staggering $45 million in stolen wages. Along the way they recruited hundreds of new members, built a network of delegates, and steadily forced management to concede to a range of demands. Both the oral history and the summarised case study provide insights and lessons for those challenging exploitation and building union power in their own workplaces.

Protest: Message from Deputy Executive Director at Friends of the Earth Japan heard at Melbourne event outside Bourke St Japanese Embassy

A message from the Deputy Executive Director at Friends of the Earth Japan, Ayumi Fukakusa (pictured) was read out to those at a Bourke St, Melbourne protest staged out the front of the Japanese Embassy. The Melbourne protest was organised by that city's Friends of the Earth. Ms Fukakusa's message, delivered at similar protests all around the world said: "Japan is one of the top financier of fossil fuel projects. Japan uses public money to support destructive projects. Back in April, the G7 Ministers' Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment was held in Sapporo. The joint communiqué included a commitment to achieving a decarbonized power sector by 2035, as in the previous year. It also noted that accelerating the transition to “clean energy" is the key to energy security, and that the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels must be accelerated. This statement is an indication of the international community's strong sense of urgency regarding the need to strengthen measures in the face of the accelerating climate crisis. On the other hand, Japan's backward-looking stance was conspicuous among the G7 members, as it opposed the inclusion of a deadline for phase-out of coal-fired power generation and insisted that gas be maintained as a “bridge fuel” in the shift to clean energy. "The promotion of an international “Green Transformation" was clearly stated in the Ministers' Meeting's Joint Communique. It needs to be emphasised that Japan's “Green Transformation”  is full of “misguided climate change measures" that have uncertain carbon reduction effects and are not consistent with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, such as building or extending the operation of nuclear power plants, extending the life of thermal power generation through co-firing of hydrogen, ammonia, and biomass or CCS. Fuel sources and technologies such as hydrogen, ammonia, and CCS, have yet to be proven for practical application and commercialization, and their emission reduction effects and economics are questionable, which will delay real measures from being implemented, and these technologies will not be ready in time for 2035. Although hydrogen and ammonia are mentioned in the joint statement as low-carbon technologies, various conditions are attached to their development and use, including the need to be able to demonstrate emission-reducing effects and consistency with the 1.5°C target. "It is very important for us that you all from Australia to put pressure on the Japanese government and Japanese corporations that are still running fossil fuel projects in Asia and Australia by holding a protest and showing solidarity during the G7 summit. We need to strengthen our international cooperation to make Japan completely withdraw from all of their fossil fuel projects and financial supports. Not only during the G7 summit, let's continue to focus on amplifying the voices of people throughout the world, especially from Asia where many Japanese fossil fuel projects are ongoing despite the severe impacts of climate change in the region, against the Japanese government and Japanese corporations." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-mclean/message

Having DJ'd for the better part of a decade, and holding a 7yr residency at QLD's Elsewhere Bar, his relocation to Melbourne has seen him swiftly excel in a scene that forces artists to sink or swim. Hung Le - Melbourne comedian legend! He was the first Asian comedian to perform in Australian comedy clubs and on TV, back in 1987, and he was very successful. In 1975, as a child, Hung and his family had to flee Vietnam when South Vietnam finally fell to North Vietnam. He is one of the first ‘boat people' and his story is incredible! I read his autobiography The Crappiest Refugee by Hung Le – an amazing story! Well worth reading. We talk about how he first started performing with a classical string quartet, The Como String Quartet, busking in the Bourke St. mall in Melbourne. He was the 3rd violinist, the 5thmember of a quartet, and he became the clown, the funny guy who interacted with the audience, danced with members of the audience, and made everyone laugh. In 1987 they entered Red Faces on Hey Hey It's Saturday Night, an incredibly popular live entertainment show on Channel 9 at the time, and they won! The Como String Quartet toured all over Australia and performed in Edinburgh and England. At their peak, the Como String Quartet performed on the Muppets! At the time, that was considered the highest privilege in show business. Hung went on to try solo stand up comedy in 1992, and has been working as a professional comedian ever since. He has had comedy shows in all of the festivals here in Australia year after year, as well as Edinburgh and Montreal. He has also performed live and on TV in Kenya, the Philippines, and other parts of Asia. His story is funny, sad, shocking, exhilarating, eye-opening, and educational. I feel very lucky to have had Hung tell me his story. I hope you get as much out of this conversation as I did.

Episode 85: Bathroom Design Essentials – Bathroom Lighting

Your Forever Home

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2021 48:50

Frances welcomes guest James Lambrou from Est Lighting to the podcast for this episode of Your Forever Home. Together they chat about Bathroom Lighting and key considerations to think about to ensure your bathroom not only looks fabulous, but is also functional. They also discuss functional and aesthetic lighting, and how to use both to light up a space - including colour, temperature and side lighting. SHOWNOTES:  Good bathroom lighting shows consideration of  3 elements- functional, mood, and time of day. Bathroom lighting needs to balance shadow and mood for functionality.   You also need to consider bathroom fittings as it forms part of the overall design look and feel as they can add personality to a space.  Natural Lighting   Natural Lighting is the best lighting in a bathroom. It’s a core consideration when designing bathroom spaces.  It’s important to think about window placement, the size of the windows and how your window is going to  provide good lighting.   Artificial Lighting   Wall lighting  You can achieve a relaxed mood in your bathroom by using wall lights. When looking for wall lighting, you need to consider if it gives off an indirect or direct light.   Direct lighting is more practical as it provides a good amount of light on your face which is handy for getting ready in the morning – especially for putting on makeup or shaving!  Other considerations:  Custom joinery lighting-  direct lighting works best on custom joinery pieces with mirrors, incorporating a low glare diffuser such as led channels or a milky lens.  This will give you a beautiful amount of lighting covering the whole area of your face. On a separate light switch, it could double up as mood lighting.   For practical use, place the led lighting vertically, 8-14 mil width.  Placing it below will not give you functionality but will give you more overall ambiance and aesthetic.   Layering of lighting will give you the ability to be able to dial it up or dial it down.     Downlights  Downlights are fine if they are not used as the sole light source in a space. To prevent shadows, avoid putting downlight in front of the basin but rather put it behind you and then add another light source. If it’s not possible, place it slightly in front of you so it lights up the space - and your face!   If you have a shower space that needs a lighting solution, it is best to remove any downlights and just add an IP 67 led strip within the cavity to the corners of the wall. This will give you a good amount of light which will highlight the textures and materials of the shower tiles.   Pros:   Create a great aesthetic   Nowadays they are much smaller and less intrusive  Types of downlights:  Recessed   Beam angle  Types of Lighting Placement  Uplighting -a beautiful way to light bathrooms  Lighting from below- ideal for showers that have textured walls to accentuate the materials and texture.   Frequent go to    Recommended Brand   XAL- an Austrian manufacturer of high-quality LED lighting systems. They have plenty of off-the-shelf surface-mounted strip lights to choose from.   Suggestions:  Recessed LED strip- mimics natural lighting as it provides light across the whole room.   Articolo Lighting – offers beautiful decorative lighting that gives you a good warm blast of light.    Information on IP rating regulations:  IP 44- A product that has a rating of IP44 means that it is protected against solid objects and water splashing from all directions. Thus, IP 44 is suitable for bathroom fittings.   Non IP rated-  should be placed at the far corner of the bathroom, at least two meters away from any running water. It will also depend on the discretion of the installer if they would allow a non IP rated product.   IP 67- You don’t need an IP 67 in a bathroom, but if you are thinking about adding lighting in the shower or around the bath, IP 67 is  the safest option.   IP 55-  downlights must be at least IP 55 because they can withstand direct water  contact.  Make sure:  The electrician signs off  on the installation and fitting   Any fitting must be a minimum of 60 cm away from  any water flow  Cool vs Warm light  For bathroom lighting, the main go  to for warm spectrum lighting is the 2,700 Kelvin Light,   and for cooler lighting, the 4,000 Kelvin Light would be a good option.   Be mindful of choosing thecolour  temperature for bathrooms as it needs to match the colour tone of the space. (I.e Greys=Cool, Beige= Warm)   It is a good idea to have a separate switch for each colour temperature. For instance, you can use 2,700  Kelvin Lights during the night for the warm ambiance and 4,000  Kelvin Lights during the day for practical use.   Key Considerations:  Switching - being able to switch the light from warm temperatures to cool temperatures is an advantage  IP rating  Bathroom space- look at the space from a three-dimensional and holistic viewpoint. Start by looking at the space from the ground then move your way up – including the sides.  The colour tone of the bathroom  Position and placement of your lighting   Functionality  An opportunity to add personality into the space  Light fittings      Important links mentioned in the podcast   EST Lighting   Est Lighting is about balancing practical lighting tools with thoughtfully selected decorative pieces to arrive at a balanced lighting design for any space — solutions that sit comfortably and work in unison with the chosen environment. In this latest podcast, ASCI CEO Ivan Imparato, says we are experiencing a vortex not felt before in our careers. This vortex is not a spiral down, but rather, a spiral up! We're heading up, outside of our safety zones and comfort zones, to the upper echelons of the organisation.  He shares his experience presenting at CEBIT this week on The Future of Work and Industry 4.0 to a mainstream business audience, many of whom are not used to hearing supply chain strategies tabled at one of their Tech events. Now is our chance to take the recognition and prestige we deserve.  How? Listen to this podcast and download our latest newsletter for ways you can travel up the vortex! Join your supply chain professional community for just $275 per annum here. Upcoming events:   ASCI Pharmaceutical Round Table Series: Track & Trace When: 7.30-9.30am Tuesday 26 November Where: Michael Page: Level 32, Grosvenor Place, 225 George St, Sydney Cost: Free for ASCI Members and their guests | $50 non members RSVP: events@asci.org.au  Track and trace is a key challenge for pharmaceutical supply chains. In this last roundtable for the year, we look at some great track and trace success stories and explore some blockchain early successes that are already appearing in our community. Increasingly, pharmaceutical companies are putting blockchain to the test in order to track and trace the drugs they manufacture and ship. In fact, according to USA's Healthcare Weekly, blockchain is “getting massive attention” in health care, with 40% of industry executives reporting that it is in their top five priorities. We'll table how one company is working to achieve pharmaceutical supply chain precision utilising a blockchain startup solution for tracking and managing of prescription medication through the supply chain while preventing misuse. Other countries are seeing some success. Ugandan government is tracing counterfeit drugs within the country. The blockchain-based platform enables the recording of prescription medication, thus identifying counterfeit drugs and preventing their distribution in the pharmaceutical supply chain. United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Health and Prevention also launched a blockchain system for recording and sharing health care data. Where is Australia making progress on this front? Who should attend? Individuals represent themselves and not their pharmaceutical organisations in this roundtable series. It is a sharing and learning environment which follows the strict guidelines as set out by ACCC. Any ASCI Member who is a supply chain, operations, procurement, or logistics practitioner working in the pharmaceutical industry is welcome to attend. When: 7.30-9.30am Thursday 14 November Where: Michael Page: Level 19, 600 Bourke St, Melbourne Cost: Free for ASCI Members and their guests | $50 for non members RSVP: events@asci.org.au Following on from the series of Sustainable & Ethical Procurement Round tables held around the country for ASCI members in June 2019, this two hour briefing drills down deeply into one of the common challenges which was identified across the supply chain community. Sustainability and ethical trade are increasingly business critical topics for any board room and are now directly impacting consumer buying behaviour. Today consumers are encouraging brands to be more vocal about sharing information and being transparent. Implementing sustainability and ethical trade best practice requires collaboration across the supply chain and implementation of technology. To begin, let's first look at what we can improve. There are an extraordinary amount of packaging inefficiencies that exist throughout the supply chain. And yet, consistency in packaging can result in meeting sustainable and ethical standards and enable cost saving optimisation of pallets, containers and warehouse space. To meet your ethical standards you need to build a trusted supplier and factory network. Ethical Trade allows retailers to record factory audit results and manage the resolution of corrective action plans (CAP's). Companies need a single database to record all the audit information, factory profiles, certification, audit reports, next audit dates, risk rating all in one place, preferably shared with their suppliers and factories. Have we ticked all the boxes? By end of this session, James Hargraves from Adjuno will ensure you have ticked all the boxes to understand how to implement efficient, ethical and sustainable solutions. This is a must-attend event to help you understand how technology can optimise, improve and drive greater compliance with packaging, sustainability and ethical trade throughout the supply chain. In this latest podcast, ASCI CEO Ivan Imparato, says we are experiencing a vortex not felt before in our careers. This vortex is not a spiral down, but rather, a spiral up! We’re heading up, outside of our safety zones and comfort zones, to the upper echelons of the organisation.  He shares his experience presenting at CEBIT this week on The Future of Work and Industry 4.0 to a mainstream business audience, many of whom are not used to hearing supply chain strategies tabled at one of their Tech events. Now is our chance to take the recognition and prestige we deserve.  How? United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Health and Prevention also launched a blockchain system for recording and sharing health care data. I love Philip Seymour Hoffman. One interesting thing he said, which I heard today during fifteen minutes of half-arsedly listening to an interview for some completely non-podcast related research, is "I'm not good at accents, you know, mimicking people." Just an interesting factoid!   Our big topic today is the Armistice Day Centennial and the surrounding nationalistic blood worship of military and war that has risen to accompany it. Darcy's rightfully skeptical of how we took the only opportunity we'll ever have to mark the Centennial and mostly used it to beat a war drum for, appropriately, war and war-related accessories. Our little topic is the US mid-terms. Folks, Kieran is tired, and he's forgotten all the specific facts but that's okay, because the general take-away is that it was mostly a slightly-disappointing victory for the Democrats, who have an opportunity to recognise the electoral value of progressive politics but will likely choose to ignore this in favour of trying to peel off moderate Republicans in the suburbs of Mordor.   Quite a crop of headlines, too - The Luke Foley sexual harrassment scandal has us rightly bummed out, not least of which because of the disgusting way that the story was broken and its resonant effect on the suffering of Foley's victim. Mark Latham has joined One Nation in an attempt to prove that two heads with a collective intelligence of one pretty stupid person are better than one head with only the dull reptilian malevolence of a minor serpent. The Bourke St attack has predictably been hijacked by jingoistic fuckwits for jingoistic, fuckwitted ends. And Scott "Beefy's" Morrison has done it again - made a god damn fool of himself, and it may be the apex of his unbelievably dumb arc.
