Memoirist and filmmaker Curtis Chin on pitching for national press, booking venues through cold emails, and making a high-volume book events strategy financially sustainable. You'll learn:Why Curtis booked readings before his memoir released to drive pre-orders, and what that early push unlocked. How he found venues by researching programs and series online, then sending cold outreach without overcomplicating it. A practical way to define your “audience” so your outreach targets the right communities and institutions. How to write a venue email that creates urgency (a “hook” and a reason to say yes now), without sounding gimmicky. A press pitching approach that starts local, builds credibility, and then moves toward national outlets. What his spreadsheets are (and aren't) for, and a lightweight way to track outreach and payments without building a complicated system. How he initially used a publisher budget, then supplemented it with community funding when the budget wasn't enough. Why momentum compounds (your growing “resume” of events and media makes the next invitations easier), and how to lean into that effect. How he structures his day to keep writing, business logistics, and book marketing moving at the same time. How getting paid for talks changed the economics of touring, and why nonfiction subject expertise can create more paid speaking opportunities. Resources & Links:

Wine isn't often the drink of choice in Chinese restaurants, yet the country's immigrants played a key role in planting Northern California vineyards and building wineries after the Gold Rush. Now, a Chinese American winemaker is bringing a taste of that history — along with her Sonoma and Napa wines — to Chinatown restaurants in the Bay Area and beyond. Have you been to every one of California's 58 counties? Reporter Lisa Morehouse has. For more than ten years, she's travelled around the state, profiling people at the heart of food and agriculture for her series California Foodways. On this week's show, for Lisa's 58th and final story, she takes us to her home county, Santa Clara, to visit a local Chinese restaurant. Over its 55-year history, Chef Chu's has witnessed fast-paced change in Silicon Valley, and has been visited by luminaries in entertainment, politics and business. Both the family behind it, and the community it feeds, can't imagine life without this beloved institution. And it's crunch time for the crews building floats for Pasadena's annual Tournament of Roses Parade. But out of the dozens of massive, ornate, flower-covered floats, only five are built by volunteers from the communities sponsoring them. One of those communities is the foothill town of Sierra Madre, just north of Pasadena. It's been building floats for 108 years, and 2026's theme is special: it celebrates the first responders that helped protect Sierra Madre from the deadly Eaton Fire. Reporter Steven Cuevas gives us a sneak peek as the group races to meet their New Year's Day deadline. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Curtis Chin is a writer, filmmaker, activist, and author of the acclaimed memoir Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. His work reflects on growing up gay and Chinese American in 1980s Detroit while working in his family's landmark restaurant.Chung's Cantonese Cuisine, founded by Curtis's great-grandfather, was a legendary Detroit institution for 65 years. Known for its handmade egg rolls and welcoming atmosphere, the restaurant became a cultural hub and safe haven for people from every walk of life.Curtis has taken his family's story global through more than 300 talks across seven countries. His memoir has received widespread recognition from outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CBS. He continues to tell stories through writing and film, while exploring ways to reconnect with his restaurant roots.Growing up in the dining room taught him about people, service, and the value of making someone's day better. His father taught him to “talk to strangers,” a lesson in curiosity, openness, and seizing opportunities.Chung's exposed him to every side of Detroit — from white-collar professionals and politicians to pimps, drag queens, and movie stars. He values service as much as food, lamenting the loss of human interaction in today's QR code and robot-driven dining experiences. The restaurant sold more than 10 million handmade egg rolls and became a Detroit institution remembered decades after closing.Food anchored his cultural identity and offered a tangible link to his heritage when other ties to China were distant. He believes family restaurants are the “glue” of communities and often serve as civic spaces as important as political offices.Chinese restaurants shaped American dining trends — from takeout and delivery to open kitchens — and remain a vital, unifying presence across the country. QUOTES “I grew up in the restaurant, but I was one of those kids that didn't know how to cook, so I was banished to the dining room. That's where I actually did most of my learning.” (Curtis)“I like to say that even though I don't work in a Chinese restaurant anymore, I'm still that Chinese waiter.” (Curtis)“My dad always gave us that advice — talk to strangers — because he knew the dining room was full of people who had opportunities outside the four walls of that Chinese restaurant.” (Curtis)“For me, going out to eat is really not just about great food, but also about great service.” (Curtis)“I realized, if I'm gonna look up to somebody, it's gonna be my dad and not this Hollywood star.” (Curtis)“Meeting all these people gave me a different perspective, a different way to see the world.” (Curtis)“Detroit in the '80s was really rough. I knew five people murdered by the time I was 18 years old.” (Curtis)“The one connection I did keep to my culture was food — that was the easiest way to hold on to where we came from.” (Curtis)“Chinese restaurants are actually one of the few places where you can go in and see someone from a different race or class and maybe start a conversation.” (Curtis)“Small family restaurants are the glue to a lot of communities.” (Curtis)“Chinese restaurants are going to save America.” (Curtis)
New Orleans has long been known for its Spanish, French, and African influences, so it can be easy to overlook the role the Chinese have played in our culture and cuisine since the mid-1800s. On this week's show, we explore the Chinese in the Crescent City – yesterday and today. First, we hear from the Historic New Orleans Collection's Winston Ho, who fills us in on the captivating history of the Chinese community here. He talks about the earliest restaurants that cropped up during Reconstruction, the Crescent City's short-lived Chinatown, and the substantial Chinese impact on the local seafood industry. Then, we fast forward to the present day to learn about Miss Shirley's Chinese Restaurant on Magazine Street – named best new restaurant in Louisiana by Southern Magazine in 2024. We visit with the restaurant's namesake, the vivacious Miss Shirley Lee, whose Royal China Restaurant in Metairie drew customers from all over the metro area for four decades. We chat with Miss Shirley about why her retirement only lasted a year – and meet her daughter, Carling, who is carrying her parents' traditions into the next generation. A few weeks back, Dennis was invited to moderate a Queer Authors Panel at the first-ever Pride Live Hollywood festival. The panel was so fun, interesting and, in a few instances, downright dishy, that Dennis thought it would make a great podcast. The authors featured are Nancy Beverly (Shelby's Vacation), Curtis Chin, (Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant), Jim Colucci (Golden Girls Forever), Frank DeCaro (Disco: Music, Movies, and Mania Under the Mirror Ball), Alonso Duralde, (Hollywood Pride), Rasheed Newson, (My Government Means to Kill Me), Mark B. Perry (And Introducing Dexter Gaines) and Bruce Vilanch (It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time). In addition to talking about their individual books and what inspired them to write them, the authors share stories about the books that rocked their worlds as readers and talk about what it means to them to finally have their precious babies out in the world.

On this episode we dive deep into the musical history of one of Italy's most fascinating and forward-thinking bands - Krisma (or Chrisma as they were originally known). This husband and wife duo from Milan created music that was light years ahead of its time, with their 1977 album "Chinese Restaurant" laying the groundwork for sounds that wouldn't become mainstream until decades later. We explore how this band went from Italian pop stardom to experimental post-punk pioneers, working with the likes of Hans Zimmer and Vangelis along the way. We chat about their various musical reinventions, that time Maurizio allegedly cut his finger off on stage (or did he?), and how their track "Miami" sounds remarkably like Radiohead's Kid A... except it was released 23 years earlier! From performing with The Beatles to mingling in Andy Warhol's circle, Krisma's story is as fascinating as their music is innovative. So grab a cuppa, settle in, and let us introduce you to your new favourite obscure band. There are only a few ways of getting out of it alive. The one rule - no matter how good it feels - DO NOT let sleep whisk you away. The only options are as follows:1. Cover yourself completely in plastic and only stick your head out to breathe when necessarily.2. Crawl into a cardboard box and try your best to stay awake.3. Take the frozen goods and stick them into your clothing. That is how you stay alive if you are trapped inside of a commercial walk in freezer.
