We recorded this about a year ago, for the 25th anniversary of the release of THE MATRIX. But since Elon Musk now controls the country, we're republishing an edited-down version because it's important to know how Musk thinks. In this cave, the residents are chained to a wall so they can't see the world outside; the best they can perceive are shadows of the real world, reflected on the wall of the cave by some light outside. Today's guest is Gurdeep Singh Pall ('89, MS Computer and Information Science), Corporate Vice President for Business AI at Microsoft. He is an "intrepreneur," a product strategist, and an enthusiastic technologist. Having spent more than three decades at Microsoft, Gurdeep is now focusing on creating scalable and ethical Autonomous Systems. His tenure at Microsoft began during the advent of the internet, and he played a key role in developing critical technologies such as TCP/IP, VPN, and cloud-based communications that underpin today's digital economy. When he arrived in Eugene in the late 1980s, Gurdeep secured a teaching assistantship to support his graduate studies at the University of Oregon. It's been rumored that he spent long hours in the computer lab, even sleeping there with a sleeping bag to finish his thesis. He joined Microsoft in January 1990. He's being interviewed by Dr. Ramón Alvarado, a Philosophy faculty member at UO and a key contributor to the Presidential Initiative in Data Science, which led to the creation of the UO School of Computer and Data Sciences. His areas of expertise include Data Ethics, AI Ethics, Epistemology of Computer Simulations, and Philosophy of Computation. Dr. Alvarado designed and teaches the first Philosophy course required by another major on campus, demonstrating the importance of philosophical thinking in a rapidly changing technological society. In 2023, he was awarded the Tykeson Teaching Award. For centuries philosophers entertained the question of whether the universe is an illusion.  A modern take on this question is whether the universe is a computer simulation, like the movie The Matrix.  When researching this topic, I was shocked to see how much discussion is out there regarding us being in a computer simulation and how many people see this as a realistic possibility.  The episode will first address the illusion question and then move on to artificial intelligence.  From there we'll dive into the computer simulation possibility, which will be the bulk of the episode.

ORAU and the University of Tennessee have partnered on a research project to develop computer simulations for rural disaster preparedness. In this episode we talk to lead researchers Julie Crumly, Ph.D., ORAU research and evaluation specialist and senior scientist, and Tom Berg, Ph.D., from the University of Tennessee, who has a joint appointment to the College of Nursing and the College of Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering. Worldview is one of the most excitable concepts among Christians today, but what does it really mean to have a Christian worldview? Why is worldview important? How is it related to apologetics? In this installment of Rooted in Revelation, Dr. James Anderson answers these questions and gives us his thoughts on what area of presuppositionalism could use the most development. Dr. James Anderson is an ordained minister in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Dr. Anderson came to RTS from Edinburgh, Scotland, and specializes in philosophical theology, religious epistemology, and Christian apologetics. His doctoral thesis at the University of Edinburgh explored the paradoxical nature of certain Christian doctrines and the implications for the rationality of Christian faith. His research and writing has also focused on the presuppositional apologetics of Cornelius Van Til, particularly his advocacy of the transcendental argument. Dr. Anderson has a long-standing concern to bring the Reformed theological tradition into greater dialogue with contemporary analytic philosophy. Before studying philosophy, Dr. Anderson also earned a PhD in Computer Simulation from the University of Edinburgh. He is a member of the Society of Christian Philosophers, the British Society for the Philosophy of Religion, and the Evangelical Philosophical Society. Prior to joining RTS Charlotte, Dr. Anderson served as an assistant pastor at the historic Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh where he engaged in regular preaching, teaching, and pastoral ministry.
