Her award-winning work has screened at CPH:DOX, Sundance, Berlinale Forum Expanded, SXSW, Camden, Hotdocs, Tribeca, BFI London, the Melbourne Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and broadcast widely. She's made works ranging from current affairs to IMAX, animation to VR, and even a residential school musical. In 2021 she received the Documentary Organization of Canada's Vanguard Award and in 2022 she was selected for a Chicken & Egg Award. Her 2024 hybrid feature documentary Wilfred Buck premiered in the DOX:AWARD section at CPH:DOX and was a top five audience pick at Hot Docs and won Best Canadian Film at Calgary Film Festival and the Women Inmate Jury Award at RIDM. Her short Lichen screened at Sundance in 2020 and Indictment: The Crimes of Shelly Chartier is one of the top watched documentaries on CBC, won the 2017 imagineNATIVE Best Doc award and was also co-produced by Lisa. Her Webby-nominated VR Biidaaban: First Light premiered at Tribeca Storyscapes in 2018, exhibited internationally to 25,000+ people, and won a Canadian Screen Award (Canada's Oscar), the second time she's received this honour. Transmissions, a 6000-square-foot immersive multimedia installation and sister project to Biidaaban, premiered in Vancouver in 2019 and was featured on the cover of The Georgia Straight. In 2016, she directed the VR Highway of Tears for CBC Radio's The Current which was nominated for a Canadian Association of Journalists award. In 2015 she was drama director for the 8 x 1 hour APTN/ZDF docudrama series 1491: The Untold Story Of The Americas Before Columbus, based on the bestselling book by Charles C. Mann, which was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award. Sean Wang is one of the most exciting directors in the world right now. His debut feature film Dídi comes out this week in cinemas near you. It was presented at this year's Sundance, where it won the US Dramatic Audience Award and Special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble Cast, and closed Sundance London. It was also acquired by Focus Features. Sean was Oscar Nominated for his short doc, Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó, about his grandmothers and their beautiful friendship. He co-wrote and co-produced with Rafael Yglesias and J.J. Abrams, The Anatomy of Hope, a pilot for HBO. He recently wrote, with Callie Khouri, Trae Crowder, and T Bone Burnett, a pilot for Amazon.He recently wrote and directed Double Down South, an indie feature that will be released in April. Jerrell L. Henderson is a Theatre Director, Puppeteer, and African American Theatre Historian and Archivist. Through the mediums of theatre and/or puppetry and film, Jerrell seeks to disrupt generational curses of self-hate (i.e. racism, homophobia, religious intolerance, etc.). Intellectually curious and emotionally dexterous, Jerrell is at home in a number of wide-ranging genres including, but not limited to, American Realism, Magical Realism, Traditional and Contemporary Musical Theatre, Poetic Black-Queer Narratives, and Live Spectacle Events. Upcoming projects include directing Ragtime at Metropolis Arts Center this Spring. A recipient of a 2023 Henson Foundation Workshop Grant and the 2022 League of Chicago Theatre's Samuel G. He is on the board of Directors Gathering. (DG) is a national organization based in Philadelphia, PA which offers theatre directors consistent community, resources, and elevation. As a theatre historian and archivist, Jerrell contributed to Fifty Key Musicals (Routledge Press). He authored the chapter on Shuffle Along (1921) and co-authored the chapter on The Wiz (1975). He also serves as the creator and curator of black_theatre_vinyl_archive on Instagram. black_theatre_vinyl_archive is an extensive collection of vinyl albums which highlight the contributions of members of the African Diaspora in Theatre/Musical Theatre History.

The deadCenter Film Festival has a history of shining a light on films made in Oklahoma about Oklahoma, and this year is no exception. Last night's closing film was the Sundance Film Festival darling, Fancy Dance, from Oklahoma-born director Erica Tremblay. The film tells the soulful story of Jax, a Native American woman living on the Seneca–Cayuga Nation Reservation, who serves as a stand-in mother for her niece, Rokie, just before Rokie's grandparents separate them. Fancy Dance received a standing ovation from the audience in The First American's Museum Five Moons Theater before taking home the Best Indigenous Feature and Best Narrative Feature awards. Erica Tremblay is the 2023 deadCenter Icon Award winner, one of the highest festival honors. In this deadCenter 2023 interview, we talk with Tremblay about her experience bringing Fancy Dance back to Oklahoma. Feeling the urge to move from acting to personal research in directing his first work, in alto il Sole in basso, which premiered at the Contaminazioni Festival in 2018. His second work, Partschótt, was part of the 2020 Romaeuropa Festival. He's worked as assistant director for Alessandro Businaro for George II (Venice Biennale Teatro 2020) and is currently working as assistant director for Valentino Villa for “Au bord” (Romaeuropa Festival). His work explores accumulation, cataloging & statistics - as a means of expression of human frailty - through live performance and its possible extensions. Starting from autobiography and documentary, he investigates non-linearity, inconsistency, and non-existence of reality. Amanda Connors is a director based in NYC. With degrees in theatre and journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she is a graduate of the National Theater Institute at the O'Neill Theater Center, and teaches at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. She's directed in NYC and around the U.S and assisted at Second Stage, Signature, Guthrie, O'Neill, Cal Shakes, and more. She was in the MTC Directing Fellowship, a recipient of the SDCF Directing Observership, the NAMT Directing Observership, and an alumna of Directors Lab Mediterranean, North, and West. In this episode, Adam speaks with directors Paolo Costantini, Maria Varnakkidou, and Marta Mari. Berlin-based Italian director Paolo Costantini is a graduate of the Silvio d'Amico National Dramatic Academy. He joined the Interkulturelles Theaterzentrum, a Fabulamundi partner, in Berlin, before collaborating with Italian-German company Barletti/Waas. He is a trusted Assistant Director to Antonio Latella whose current production of Hamlet won the Ubu Award for best show of the year. In 2021, Paolo won the Venice Biennale Teatro's Under 30 Directors competition with the project "Uno Sguardo Estraneo", still touring across Italy today. He was recently selected for a project “Il Fondo” led by the Santarcangelo Festival, supporting non-conventional artistic research. Maria Varnakkidou is a Cypriot theatre director who studied at Brunel University and completed her master's degree in Theatre Directing at Royal Holloway University in the UK. She has worked in the theatre and film world for the past ten years across various projects. Her interests include devised, immersive, and community theatre, creating work for social change and critical thinking. She was a creative director of the Buffer Fringe Festival 2020-21, and this year she is one of the artistic curators. He writes for theater, musical theater, cinema, & television. Winner of Carlo Annoni international award for LGBTQ dramaturgy (2020) National Association of Italian theatre Critics Award (2020) He is a Watermill Center fellow having worked with Robert Wilson and has collaborated extensively with Luca RonconiOlive Pascha is a Liverpool-based Director who works across theatre and film. With a background in animation, live action and visual effects, Andrew Thomas Huang’s work bridges the gap between video art and film, expanding beyond into alternative modes of storytelling. His film and video work has exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; MoMA PS1; The Barbican Centre, London; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Having developed a strong reputation for his collaborative practice, Huang has worked extensively with Icelandic artist Bjork, among others including FKA Twigs, Thom Yorke and British director Joe Wright. Huang served as creative director for Bjork’s VR exhibition Bjork Digital, creating multiple immersive experiences within the pioneering traveling installation. ALEX WILLIAMS FILMMAKER Alex Williams is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist, working in documentary and narrative film, theatre, and still photography. His most recent film, The Pass System, is an investigative documentary into an illegal segregationist practice of the Canadian government that has played widely in festivals and communities across Canada, and was broadcast on CBC and APTN. Alex teaches video design at the National Theatre School of Canada, is a member of Canadian Actor’s Equity Association, the Documentary Organization of Canada. He is President of the artist-run centre Charles Street Video, and sits on the boards of Indigenous Theatre Company Article 11, and the Toronto Media Arts Centre (TMAC).
Tina Mabry an American film writer and director from Tupelo, Mississippi. Following the release of her first feature film Mississippi Damned (2009), she was named one of '25 New Faces of Indie Film' by Filmmaker Magazine and among the 'Top Forty Under 40' by Advocate Magazine. Mabry was named a James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists. A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Tina Mabry graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with an MFA in Film Production in 2005. While participating in Film Independent’s (FIND) Project: Involve, Tina finished developing and writing her short film, BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN, which she went on to direct. The film screened at more than fifty film festivals worldwide and won multiple Jury and Audience Awards as well as an award for Best Director. BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN aired on Showtime Networks, BET J (now Centric), and was voted the #1 film on the season finale of LOGO’s The Click List 2: Best in Short Film. Shortly after graduating from USC, Tina co-wrote the feature screenplay ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE, which was directed by Jamie Babbit (BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER). The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (2007) and won Best Feature Narrative at the South by Southwest Film & Music Festival (2007). In 2008, Tina participated in the FIND’s Directors Lab with her feature film, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED; the film was later awarded the Kodak Film Grant. While playing on the festival circuit, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED garnered an impressive thirteen awards from participation in fifteen film festivals including awards for Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the Chicago International Film Festival (2009). The film premiered on Showtime Networks in February 2011. Tina was named among the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in Filmmaker Magazine in July of 2009 and was recognized by Out Magazine as one of the most inspirational and outstanding people of 2009. She was featured in the Advocate magazine as part of their “Top Forty Under 40” issue, which features the top 40 individuals who are raising the bar in their respective fields. With over 300 nominated artists and only 50 selected artists, Tina was named the James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists, a national grant-making, and artist advocacy organization, in December of 2010. Tina’s latest feature, COUNTY LINE, was accepted into FIND’s 2010 Screenwriters Lab. In April 2011, the script participated in Tribeca All Access where it won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award. COUNTY LINE also took part in FIND’s Fast Track, a film financing market, which was held during the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011. Concluding in June 2012, Tina participated in the Fox Writers Intensive, which is a highly selective writer’s initiative designed to introduce experienced writers with unique voices, backgrounds, life and professional experiences that reflect the diverse perspectives of FOX’s television and feature film audiences. Independent Television Service produced Tina’s latest short film, CROSSOVER, as part of their FUTURESTATES program; a series of independent mini-features showing visions of what life in America will be like in decades to come. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2012) and screened at the Urbanworld Film Festival (2013) and the Pan African Film Festival (2013).
