POPULARITY
This week, we're huddling with Toby Hadoke in a tent in a cave set somewhere on Mars, wondering what that massive gun is for and trying to decide which terrifying Imperial Majesty to give our fealty to. It's Empress of Mars. Notes and links Lucifer Box is the protagonist of three spy novels by Mark Gatiss set in the early twentieth century, The Vesuvius Club (2004), The Devil in Amber (2006) and Black Butterfly (2008). Empress of Mars first aired on 10 June 2017. Two days earlier, there was a general election, in which Theresa May's Conservative government was returned to power with a slightly reduced majority. May had become prime minister of the UK in July 2016 and had begun the process of leaving the EU by triggering Article 50 in March 2017. The UK formally left the EU on 31 January 2020, just two days before Praxeus aired. One of the clear inspirations for the premise here is H G Wells's novel The First Men in the Moon (1901), in which a penniless writer and his eccentric inventor neighbour travel to the moon and meet its indigenous inhabitants, who are unimpressed with what they hear about our social and political systems on earth. A film adaptation First Men in the Moon (1969) was co-written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featured music by Laurie Johnson, who will be familiar to fans of The Three Handed Game. There was also a television adaptation in 2010, written by Mark Gatiss and starring both him and Rory Kinnear. Other inspirations include Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter novels, starting with A Princess of Mars in 1912, in which a Civil War veteran from Virginia is transported to Mars and becomes involved in various wars and areopolitical struggles. There are eleven books in the series, culminating in John Carter of Mars in 1964. And just one more possible inspiration: She (1887), by H Rider Haggard, about the search for a white sorceress who rules a tribe in a remote part of Africa. Katy Manning played an Ice Warrior queen for Big Finish, in a box set called The Second Doctor Adventures: Beyond the War Games, released in 2020. According to Toby, Anthony Calf, who plays Godsacre here, was also in The Visitation. He played Charles, the son of John Savident's Squire in the opening scenes of Part 1, and it was indeed his first television role. Its first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Last weekend, a new episode of Maximum Power was released, in which Pete and Si interviewed two of the people involved in the creation of the new Blakes 7 Series 1 blu-ray box set — filmmakers Chris Chapman and Chris Thompson. We'll be back to cover Series D next month. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we raised the occasional eyebrow as a shapeshifting red octopus ran amok on the Enterprise in an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series called The Survivor.

He sees the effects of historic and current systemic social injustices and how social enterprises are one way of addressing them.Jim, who will speak at SuperCrowdBaltimore, cites Lawrence Brown from Morgan State University as the expert on the social disparities between white and Black communities in their city. A map showing neighborhoods in the town by racial composition shows an L-shaped area through the heart of the city that is predominantly white. The east and west sides of the city are primarily Black. Brown calls the areas the “White L” and the “Black Butterfly.”“He has done a brilliant job of overlaying any number of social disparities, be they health, be they economic disparities, be they home ownership,” Jim says. “Every single one of them lays almost perfectly directly over those racial demographics.”Brown is working on documenting the history of redlining in Baltimore, which evidence now shows to have been the origin of the practice enforced by the Federal government preventing banks from lending in predominantly Black neighborhoods. A literal red line defined no-lending communities.Baltimore provides a textbook for defining social injustice. “Baltimore, because of that, is also a textbook for how this can be fixed,” Jim says.Jim has identified four reasons why Baltimore is a great place for social entrepreneurs.* Higher than average percentage of people with graduate degrees.* Baltimore has substantial wealth “despite what people may think from the outside.”* The city is the optimal size for effective networking–big enough to have all the resources and small enough to access them.* The city is home to a variety of social problems, giving innovators plenty to work on.Jim is excited to see people succeed and doesn't begrudge anyone accumulating wealth, but does argue that enough can be enough:I have a presentation that I've been using for years now around the basics of how to fix capitalism through social enterprise. There's a slide that I have in that presentation that talks about mega-yachts. I use a line that's intended as a bit of a joke but also very, very serious. Is there anybody on the planet that really needs a 160-foot mega yacht? I mean, I don't know about you, but I could probably learn to get by with 140 feet. You know, those last 20 feet are just kind of excessive. The program Jim directs at UMB is a graduate certificate in social entrepreneurship. It requires a bachelor's degree to start the program but is only 12 credits rather than the 36 typical of master's programs. You can complete the online program in one year. “One of the reasons we did it that way is because a lot of the folks that are doing good work in social change already have various advanced degrees–master's in social work, sometimes an MBA–but they need specific skills around what's unique about social enterprise,” Jim says. Throughout his career, Jim has leveraged and honed a superpower of opportunity discernment. He can distinguish between a good idea and one that will work as a business.Jim and the folks at UMB have partnered with The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation, to host SuperCrowdBaltimore on March 21st at the B&O Rail Museum. The program features a deep roster of both prominent local community builders and crowdfunding experts from across the country. The event allows everyone to learn how to be a social entrepreneur or an investor who supports them. Register now with the discount code SuperCrowd to save 30 percent.AI Episode Summary1. Devin Thorpe introduces his guest, Jim Kucher, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, highlighting Jim's expertise in social impact and entrepreneurship.2. Jim describes the graduate certificate in social entrepreneurship he directs at the university, explaining that it's a 12-credit, one-year, fully online program designed for individuals with advanced degrees who need specific skills unique to social enterprise.3. The graduate certificate covers innovation in social settings, product/service development considering community needs, and marketing strategies for different stakeholders, including constituents, funders, and product/service buyers.4. Jim emphasizes the importance of understanding how to finance social enterprises, teaching students to blend and time various financing strategies to create sustainable ventures.5. Devin and Jim discuss the SuperCrowdBaltimore event, where Jim's program will be formally introduced, and the benefits of social entrepreneurship in addressing issues with capitalism, such as income inequality and when profit is excessive.6. Jim credits a colleague, Lawrence Brown, for research on racial wealth gaps in Baltimore and explains the adverse effects of historical redlining practices on black communities.7. Acknowledging the social and economic disparities in Baltimore, Jim notes that the city presents an ideal environment for social innovation due to its educated population, quiet wealth, manageable size for building networks, and range of social problems to address.8. Jim's superpower is identifying the practicality of good ideas, knowing which ones can realistically work, and understanding when to walk away from unfeasible ones, using his experience with the impact of 9/11 on capital markets as an example.9. He advises aspiring entrepreneurs to do simple arithmetic, like profit and loss statements and balance sheets and cautions that pursuing entrepreneurship based solely on a passion for an art or craft might lead one away from the actual passion itself.10. Jim provides his email (jkucher@umaryland.edu) and directs the audience to the University of Maryland, Baltimore website for more information on the social entrepreneurship program, mentioning the SuperCrowdBaltimore event and other upcoming events for interested individuals. If you'd like more people to support diverse founders and social entrepreneurs, please share. How to Develop Opportunity Discernment As a SuperpowerThe power of opportunity discernment often manifests, Jim says, in what he chooses not to do rather than what to do.One of the best things about performing that analysis is that you don't get pulled into something that can cause you harm. We launched a technology company in the late 90s–I say we, my wife and I. The idea came out of my work in my MBA studies at the University of Baltimore. We licensed the federal technology. Everything was going quite well. We were getting some early investors. And then somebody flew a plane into the side of a building in lower Manhattan. As you may recall, when 9/11 happened, all the capital markets dried up. Happily, we had the good sense to realize that that was a fatal blow to the business. We got out with our skin mostly intact. The sort of mythical entrepreneur is this person that we think of with this incredible drive and this incredible push that can just sort of literally run through brick walls. I've tried to run through brick walls. The brick wall doesn't move. Your head hurts, but the brick wall doesn't move. Maybe you go around the brick wall; maybe you go over the brick wall; maybe you go under the brick wall. But maybe sometimes you say, “That wall is impenetrable. I'm going home.”Jim says we can all improve this skill with “simple arithmetic.” Balance sheets and income statements can be created in spreadsheets, allowing anyone to understand the viability of a company. In real estate, folks ask, “Does it pencil?” That's an excellent question for social enterprises, too.By following Jim's example and advice, you can develop your opportunity discernment. With practice, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJim Kucher (he/him):Associate Professor - Social Innovation, University of Maryland, BaltimoreAbout the University of Maryland, Baltimore: The Graduate School at The University of Maryland, Baltimore offers graduate education and training in biomedical, health, and human service sciences. We had the pleasure of interviewing Nelson Freitas over Zoom video! After teasing us with two sensational singles, the Cape Verdean icon Nelson Freitas has released his long-awaited seventh album Black Butterfly via AWAL.A revelatory new record featuring a star-studded line-up of producers and songwriters, Black Butterfly is a masterful fusion of the signature sounds Nelson has built a legacy on during his multi-decade long career as a sonic boundary pusher, while also pushing forward with an experimental new sound for the star. While the Dutch artist of Cape Verdean heritage is no stranger to the scene, Nelson's new music reintroduces him with an evolution of his previous output. As a legend in the scene, Nelson has amassed a global fanbase over the years for his unique sound fusing Kizomba and Zouk with R&B and hip-hop – all of which are elements of the ‘mainstream' Afrobeats sound audiences of today have become familiar with, which is something Nelson heavily leans into on Black Butterfly. As the follow-up to Nelson's 2021 album Dpos D' Quarentena – home to his Mr Eazi assisted hit “Tellin' Me Something” – Nelson has assembled an impressive team of some of the most prominent producers in the Afrobeats scene for Black Butterfly. With a clear vision in mind for his record to create a ‘new sound', Nelson worked with in-demand hitmakers like Blaisebeatz (BNXN, Davido, Victony, CKay) and Nigerian super-producer Ozedikus (Rema, Oxlade) to deliver a body of work that sonically shows him in his true form.A record several years in the making, Black Butterfly also hears Nelson team up with the Grammy-nominated Afrobeats pioneer Kel-P on standout track “Satisfy You,” as well as the likes of Daecolm Holland (Adekunle Gold) who appears on “Don't Let Me Go” and co-wrote the title track with Nelson alongside Arrow Benjamin (Beyoncé), J.Sol and Mohombi.Elsewhere, the dark and mysterious “Nightcrawler” takes place as another major highlight from Black Butterfly, with Nelson smoothly gliding over the Masterkraft helmed beat and treating us to his signature vocal tones.Black Butterfly is preceded by the single “Hero” (watch), racking up over 3M views with its stunning music video which stars the Angolan-Portuguese international supermodel Sharam Diniz and emphasizes those moments in life when we must let go of even those we hold the closest. “Hero” has seen major airplay via DJ Edu on BBC Radio 1Xtra and was also selected by UK tastemaker VIPER Magazine as one of their ‘Essential' picks. As the title track and second single of Black Butterfly, “Black Butterfly” was originally conceived by Nelson whilst at a writing camp hosted by the legendary producer Teddy Riley (Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson) in Cabo Verde. Relaying a story of a sweet love affair, the swaying Afro rhythms of “Black Butterfly” are elevated by lush strings arranged by Portuguese musician Tiago Machado and has seen radio airplay across the UK including BBC 1Xtra and Wizard Radio, as well as playlisted by Noctis Magazine for their ‘Best of the Week' selects.Meanwhile, the luxurious “Black Butterfly” music video was directed by André Caniços and pictures a suavely styled Nelson against a backdrop of dancers and futuristic architecture amongst epic Cape Verdean greenery – a stunning juxtaposition between the modern and the classic, surely serving as the perfect representation of Nelson's forward-thinking yet timeless sounds.Speaking about his album, Nelson Freitas said the following: “I've been waiting for this album for ten years and it's a project where I truly found myself. It's something I've been working on for a long time and I believe the time has finally come. I looked for the best Afrobeats producers and composers in the world, and only with them did I feel complete enough to take this leap.”During his award-winning and Platinum-selling career, Nelson's energetic and dynamic stage performances have taken him to all corners of the globe, such as: the United States (including the Dunkin Donuts Center in Boston and AfroNation in Miami), the United Kingdom, Holland, Switzerland, France, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola and Portugal, where Nelson has sold out prestigious venues like the Coliseu dos Recreios and Campo Pequeno.Exhibiting a legendary artist at creative highs, the Black Butterfly record will surely see Nelson reach new heights in his already illustrious career and penetrate a wider audience through his fresh new sounds and lyrical perspectives. We want to hear from you! There are great masters such as Emerson, Plato and many Asian Masters (Lao Tzu) who are convinced that if mankind lived life according to the principles of nature, then we would be at peace with ourselves and with each other. It's a philosophy not uncommon in the ways of the East but has yet to be fully grasped by the western world. We are hoping this modern way of presenting this ancient theme will resonate with you, irrespective of your cultural or religious background. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chris-walker70/message

It was an ordinary Sunday evening in February, 1939, in London's brightly lit West End. Legendary detective, Robert Fabian, known to all as Fabian of the Yard, was enjoying a quiet duty at Vine Street Police Station. Or so he thought. When a musician stumbled into the station, screaming bloody murder, Fabian became entangled in a shadow-play of sleaze, vice and violence. A beautiful singer known as The Black Butterfly had been found brutally murdered in her flat, lying in a pool of her own blood, her killer still on the loose. The cunning inspector had nothing to go on except for a shred of black foil and the vague mention of a man in a nightclub offering the victim drinks. Fabian knew he had to move fast. Or else, risk the knife man striking again... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
This month we take a look at the torments of the writing process through the lens of Rob Reiner's 1990 adaptation of 1987 King novel Misery. Like last month's Shawshank Redemption it was a favourite of critics and audiences alike, mainly due to the bravura performances of James Caan and Kathy Bates. Joining me to talk about it is screenwriter and film buff Justin Stanley, who has written about the tempestuous process of writing in the 2017 film Black Butterfly, starring Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Justin and I will also be present for the upcoming screening of the grindhouse double bill at Norwich Cinema City on March 21st 2022. Justin has been advocating for Hollywood 90028 since it's restoration, and he has paired it with the sleazy classic Death Game for an unforgettable night. I will be pitching in to help host, and we will have contributions from film historian (and previous guest) Dr Linda Sheppard, writer/director Eli Roth and writer/director Ti West. Tickets are available here, but please act quickly, as there aren't many left.... Apologies to Ally Wilkes for bumping her this month (in favour of Annie Wilkes, strangely), but our conversation will now be out on April 1st. No fooling. Finally, we reached the end of Season 5. The final show, episode 52 went out live at 19h00 on 29 Dec 2022 on rebel Rock Radio. At the risk of boring you all I just have to say that once again it all happened under really trying circumstances. I hope you all appreciate the lengths I have to go through to get this show out. The Wi-Fi has been non-existent all day, I can't even upload the MCR Rock Review. We have more load shedding in an hour's time and I can't get onto the Rebel Rock Site so I am flying blind. That said this show is a wrap-up of all the albums we checked out this year. Well, not all the albums because we checked out 65 new releases this year. Out of 157 albums added this year 65 were 2022 releases. I did my best to play you as much as possible from these 65. We kicked off with Halestorm and the title track of their release Back From The Dead. From there we had Motor Sister and a track called 'Can't Get Enough'. From there we listened to ‘Take What You Want' off Diamond Star Halos, the latest offering from Def Leppard. We went to Germany and took a listen to Rammstein and to Sinner. Desolation Angels out of the UK (with South African bassist Clive Pearson who used to be in a SA Metal band called Lynx back in the ‘80s) gave us a track called 'Walking On Water' off Burning Black. We also heard from Tony Martin ex Black Sabbath and Joe Lynn Turner ex Rainbow. Both these guys both put out strong albums in the form of Thorns and Belly of the Beast respectively. Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed both made the cut and sounded awesome. It was time for a bit of Metal from Soulfly and a track called 'Ancestors'. We also heard 'Black Butterfly' from Candlemass. After checking out some late ‘80's early ‘90s style rock from the Dead Daisies, Skid Row, and Aussie youngsters Dead City Ruins we hit the blues with our very own Dan Patlansky whose Shelter of Bones was given the No 2 spot by Blues Rock Magazine. The South African scene was also represented by L.A. Cobra, The Devil's Party Band, Infanteria, and Diverted Disorder. Finally, we got to the top of the list and played out with Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, and Megadeth, and the best album of 2022 according to me went to Arch Enemy with Deceivers. We had a few minutes left so we checked out with scenes from forthcoming attraction in 2023 in the form of Blink 182 and the single they dropped months ago called ‘Edging'. I hope to see you all for 2023 and Season 6 of The Story of Rock and Roll. PS. Notable mentions we just didn't get to Keator, Slipknot, Soilwork, Ghost, and Machine Head, what a year for music. Artists featured: Halestorm, Herman Frank, Motor Sister, Def Leppard, Sinner, Rammstein, Joe Lynn Turner, Nickelback, Desolation Angels, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Eddie Vedder, Billy Idol, Alter Bridge, Tony Martin, Candlemass, Soulfly, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Dead City Ruins, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Cobra, Scorpions, Kid Rock, Hell Fire, Infanteria, Sakis Tolis, The Devil's Party Band, Diverted Disorder, Queensrÿche, Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, Megadeth, Arch Enemy The Story of Rock and Roll. Your path in life is your decision. Choosing the one that is optimized for you takes courage. Placing your own mental health first will result in loss (relationships, friendships). That's why it takes courage to do so. Self care and healing can be a lonely path. Link to scene from Arrival referenced in the recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7TzXoutzHo
The Jersey Guys Podcast is back with episode # 29 and this time we are joined by special guest Jerome Mazza (Angelica, Pinnacle Point, Steve Walsh and solo work).Jerome Mazza is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. At the age of 8, Jerome taught himself how to play the guitar and sing after being influenced by guitarist and singer/songwriter, Mark Farner of the band Grand Funk Railroad. Playing guitar and singing through his teenage years, he joined his first band at age 19 and toured the east coast in various pop and rock bands. Jerome started to write songs at the age of 25 and was very influenced by the rock band, Kansas, whose music combined classical music with progressive rock. While honing his songwriting and his singing, he became a session vocalist including singing commercials in Los Angeles for major corporations such as Coors Beer, Pizza Hut, HBO and several publishing firms. In 1990 Jerome became the lead singer for the second album from the Christian metal band, Angelica, entitled “Walking In Faith”. The album ended up being the best-selling Angelica record. Still today, it's known as one of the best metal albums in Christian music. In 2015, Jerome recorded a self-titled solo album in a classic adult contemporary style that could be compared to everything from Josh Groban to Michael Bolton. In 2016, Jerome became the lead singer and one of the founding members (along with guitarist/songwriter/producer Torben Enevoldsen) of the band, Pinnacle Point. In 2017, Jerome contributed lead vocals to multiple tracks on Steve Walsh's (Kansas) fourth solo album entitled “Black Butterfly” which was released in November of that year. Jerome sings lead vocals on three songs (“Winds Of War”, “Now Until Forever”, “Mercy On Me”) and duets with Walsh on the single “Born In Fire”.In late 2018 Jerome released his new solo album “Outlaw Son” and it is a classic AOR album of the finest order, drawing comparisons to Journey and other great AOR acts. After listening to the podcast you can stay up date with the latest on Jerome Mazza at www.jeromemazza.com.

When Don Walker's wife passed away, he was left the single dad of a 4 week old daughter. His journal became his therapy, and ultimately the source for his first book, "Notes from a Black Child's Father." Writing remains an outlet for him. Other titles include: "Consumed by One Another," "Just Us," "The Locust," "Hearing Voices," "Get Up God's Child, Don't Beg," "White Flight, Black Butterfly," "Why Can't You Mind Your Own Business," and "What Are You Looking For?" In the midst of world situations and racial issues, Don learned to "sweep around your back door before the front door." Yes, racism is real. Jim Crow was real, but stop focusing on the outside. Be the best we can be - spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally. Look for the opportunities that come your way and remember, our children are always watching us. It's important to look around and see who is following you. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/susan-sherayko/support
