This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're throwing shade. What do you do when you're in the White House and forced to do a media availability with a crazy person? Make faces at the camera, of course. We'll talk about Carney's new place as everyone's favourite anti-Trump figure, some complicated feelings post-election in Alberta, and then we'll talk to the man who now formally represented Guelph in the House of Commons. This Thursday, May 8, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Separation Anxiety. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced on Monday that if enough people in the province agree, the rest of Canada won't have Alberta to kick around anymore! Smith says that if enough people sign a petition, she will hold a referendum on separation. There's quite a vocal constituency in the Wildrose Province who want to put Confederation in the past, but are there enough of them to make a formal go of it? And do they even understand the logistics of leaving Canada? Pundit? Just Leave It. Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to the White House this week was considered a success because he managed not to get yelled at by Donald Trump. Carney's Trump handling abilities scored him points from many American pundits who have all hailed the PM as the leader of the resistance they've all been waiting for, but what about us Canadians? Why isn't anyone talking about the issues we want fixed? Do Canadians even matter when it comes to our own politics anymore? So Longfield. For the last 10 years, Guelph has been represented in Parliament by Lloyd Longfield. The former President of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce was elected along with the rest of Justin Trudeau's first class in 2015, and unlike many of his colleagues, Longfield happily went about the regular, everyday work of doing Member of Parliament stuff and avoided cabinet ambitions and political power plays. In his last professional appearance on Open Sources, Longfield will tell us how he did it, and what comes next. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
The Liberals are still flying high in the polls - and everytime Donald Trump opens his mouth the same old Cabinet seems to get another bump in the polls. But what do Canadians really know about Mark Carney? Is this the reverse to the situation we faced with Trudeau - it's not that Canadians love Mark Carney - it's that they dislike Pierre Poilievre? Do Canadians want a technocrat as Prime Minister, rather than a Parliamentarian? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

As we've observed changes in how the generosity of Canadians is being expressed over the last few years, it begs the question if the relevance of the charitable sector is starting to get lost a little. Do Canadians really understand the essentialness of what we do and what our impact is…and what society would look like without us. And so, similar to the way organizations build a “case for support” for themselves, there has been an awakening of late for the need to “advocate”, educate and build a case for our sector as a whole. In this episode, we speak to three sector leaders about this issue. We hear from Sandy Richardson , CEO and Lori Elder, Board Director, about how the Victoria Foundation's recently released report, Civil Society Impact, has built a compelling case for the sector in Victoria. And we hear from Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Imagine Canada, who shares the pan-Canadian perspective of the need for and impact of the sector across the country…including a part of the story we don't often talk about – our economic impact.

The Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Democratic Reform Maryam Monsef have pledged that Election 42 will be the last using the "First Past The Post" system. What their plan is has yet to be revealed to the Canadian public. But the discussion is very lively about what a new electoral system should look like for Canada outside the House. Over 90 countries, including 85% of OECD members, use some form of Proportional Representation. The old rhetoric of "every vote counts" is simply not true in a FPTP electoral system. Since World War I, Canada has had 17 "majority governments" based on seat count. Only four of those had an actual majority of the popular vote. Canadians have in reality been electing minority governments most of the time, based on vote totals. The Liberal government has publicly decried "We will make every vote count". Do Canadians really think their votes translated into an accurate seat count? On October 19, it took 37,728 votes to elect one Liberal MP. It took 602,755 votes to elect one Green MP. Nearly 17.6 million votes were cast, yet the overwhelming Liberal majority was delivered with just 4.6 million of them. Kelly Carmichael, Executive Director of Fair Vote Canada, joins us to examine what is and what needs to be for Election 43. Proportional Representation delivers equal and effective votes, better environmental performance, better gender equality and better policy development and implementation, based on historical data. This Week in Costa Rica - Expats Living, Working, and Traveling in Costa Rica
This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Arun (Ernie) Nagratha, CPA, CA, CPA of Trowbridge Professional Chartered Accountants and Tax Advisors to discuss Canadian taxes for expats and those living abroad. Some of our questions and topics include: I understand Canadians can be seen as non-residents. What is a non-resident for tax purposes, how does this effect my citizenship or legal status in Canada? What criteria does one need to met to become a non-resident? What if there is a tax treaty between Canada and the country I go to? How does that impact me? What type of tax return is filed if you intend to become a non-resident? Do Canadians need to pay tax on foreign earned income abroad if one does not become a non-resident? How are Canadians taxed on their assets such as investments in Canada while living abroad? Can Canadians continue to use their Canadian bank accounts after expatriating? What if I live abroad and want to own property in Canada, can I? What if I rent it out what implications does it have? I want to bring my savings back to Canada from abroad, will Canada tax me? Dan Stevens from the Costa Rican times joins me this week to talk about the FATCA delay, Miss Costa Rica 2014, the Chikungunya Virus, a conclusion to the Cuban in limbo in SJO airport, and the possibility that the new presidential jet may have been used by a drug cartel.
