Join Dr. Paul Meier and Kristin for part 2 of anniversary illnesses. Dr. Paul Meier Notes: NORMAL BRIEF GRIEF. My father died many years ago and I was with him when he died talking to him and it was a wonderful experience even though sad to lose him. I have dealt with it well I believe. One Christmas Day a few years after his death, I was excited to go wake up our young kids to open presents and have an exciting day together, but then I felt suddenly sad for no apparent reason and couldn’t figure out why. I went into a room by myself and prayed for insight and immediately became aware that my parents always came at Christmas mornings to open presents with us. My Mom was still alive and would be there soon, but my Dad wouldn’t and I missed him. I actually encouraged myself to cry and did so for about two minutes and prayed that God would send an angel to give him a hug up in heaven and tell him we love him and miss him today. God would never say no to a request like that. Then I felt great again, having become aware of the reason and dealt with it. Feeling temporary brief dysthymia is not always a bad thing. It was a good thing in that circumstance and it might be for you in our listening family too.REGRESSION = Lots of my clients who I have seen for med checks but brief therapy once every few months for 10-15 years have done great that long, but we all still have a tendency to REGRESS to some extent to seeing life and ourselves and our roles like we saw them in childhood when we visit parents and sibs on the holidays or other events (weddings, etc.) and then are surprised we may feel worse temporarily after the holiday and not even know why. I warn my clients as I see them in Nov and Dec to watch out for that and I explain this to them. That way they catch themselves and avoid it, or sometimes need to avoid obnoxious parents who are always verbally abusive. To feel guilty for staying out of contact or limiting contact with chronically abusive parents is false guilt. We should feel guilty if we subject ourselves and our families to that instead. “Honoring your father and mother” in the Bible doesn’t mean letting them dominate or abuse you. It might mean having no contact with them but pitching in financially with other sibs to help pay for a nursing home when they are old, or it may involve doing nothing but avoiding or assisting them altogether.PTSD SYMPTOMS MAY OCCUR ANNUALLY EVEN WHEN GONE THE REST OF THE TIME. If there is a past traumatic event of any kind or even strong regret that has not been adequately dealt with, each year near that anniversary date any person might experience more anxiety and sadness and not know why. Even nightmares that are difficult to understand, or more sensitivity. A person MIGHT be aware of what it is and feel bad each year or MIGHT NOT even be aware of what it is. For example, people who believe abortion is OK for personal reasons often feel sad annually at the time it occurred, often unconsciously, and may even look around at kids of the age that child would be had he or she been born and have conscious or unconscious regrets or guilt feelings. This is part of what is known psychiatrically as POST-ABORTION SYNDROME.UNRESOLVED GRIEF. Anniversaries of major losses, like death of a child or significant other. Broken relationships. Divorce is often more traumatic than the death of a beloved mate. It is a rude awakening that the mate was not who you thought he or she really was. It is a willful rejection of you rather than an unexpected death.

Mature Marital Communication Guidelines with Dr. Paul Meier

Meier Clinics Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2020 59:25

(GUIDELINES THAT BUILD INTIMACY IN MARRIAGE AND RESULT IN MATURE CONFLICT RESOLUTION) COMMITMENT TO GOD is vital in a marriage. Imagine a triangle with God at the top. As you both grow more spiritually connected with God you also become more emotionally and spiritually connected with each other.AGREE TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER’S FEELINGSTEAMWORK = YOU ARE BOTH ON THE SAME TEAM. Two guards on the same basketball team, while dribbling down the court, would not try to steal the ball from each other because they are on the same team. Couples who argue in unhealthy ways are on opposing teams and need to join the same team. The goal of conflict resolution is not who wins. When a couple resolves an issue, or even agrees to disagree, they both win.CONFLICT RESOLUTION IS THE GOAL OF MATURE “ARGUMENTS”—NOT WHO WINS. When you resolve a conflict, or agree to disagree, YOU BOTH WIN.NEVER ATTACK EACH OTHER. This is another aspect of being on the same team. Calling each other names or attacking each other in any way is not a good way to bring resolution. A mature couple will discuss their differences of opinion or their perceived offenses while listening to each other’s opinions and either agree on a compromise, apologize for an offense, or agree to disagree, but all without attacking each other or calling each other names. COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHER means a lifelong choice to be loving to each other, even when not feeling that way at times. The FEELING of love varies even day by day. Two people marry each other because they love each other. It is totally normal, when living with each other a long time, for those feelings to go up and down. In Revelation chapter 2:1-5, God clearly taught three steps for rebuilding waning feelings of love. God complimented the church in Ephesus about a number of very good things they were doing and had only one constructive criticism: they had "lost their first love." The depth of love and enthusiasm that they felt for God when they first became believers had significantly decreased. God taught them that LOVE IS A CHOICE that could be achieved using three simple steps: "REMEMBER therefore from whence thou art fallen, and REPENT, and DO THE FIRST WORKS;" THOSE WILL BE OUR NEXT 3 STEPS FOR REVIVING THE LEVEL OF LOVE IN A MARRIAGE.REMEMBER=A mate can start by remembering the romantic and loving feelings that were present early in the marriage and remember the loving things that were done for each other. As human beings we all take things AND OFTEN EACH OTHER for granted and forget the importance of maintaining those love feelings and behaviors.REPENT means to recognize that the decision the couple each made to love each other deeply at some time in their relationship had now declined in intensity. It would be wise and profitable for each member of that couple to make a "re-decision" to make a determined effort to rebuild the depth of love that had been present earlier in their relationship. DO THE FIRST WORKS means that WHETHER OR NOT A MATE FEELS THAT DEGREE OF LOVE, he/she can choose to do the loving things daily that were done for each other early on in their marriage. The valuable lesson God taught humanity in that passage is that IF A PERSON BEHAVES LOVINGLY TOWARD GOD (AND THIS WOULD APPLY TO A MATE, OF COURSE, AS WELL) THE FEELINGS OF LOVE WILL USUALLY BE REVIVED.NO SHOULDS OR SHOUDN'TS. These are PARENT-TO-CHILD statements and are condescending in marriage. Wives have already had a father. They don't need or want their husbands to be their fathers, but rather their lover and friend and equal. Likewise, husbands don't need or want another mother. Shoulds and shouldn'ts don't work well anyway. As humans, we are usually automatically defensive whether we know our mate is right or wrong, which results in arguments. If A mate is doing (or NOT doing) or saying something that the other mate believes to be wrong, dropping SHOULD and SHOULDN'T messages on each other is VERY UNLIKELY to bring about change."I FEEL" MESSAGES ARE VERY EFFECTIVE TO BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGES. Messages like "I felt really loved just now when you...." "I felt sad today when you...." "I feel angry toward you right now because...." It's really difficult to argue with someone about whether they feel the way they say they do. It would be really narcissistic--or just plain STUPID--to say, "No you don't feel that way." The expressive mate is not even insisting (depending on what it is) that the offending mate change, merely wanting the offending mate to realize how the expressive mate FEELS about the offending mate's action. non-action or choice of words. EXAMPLE = A husband and wife agree to meet somewhere at 6 p.m. after work the wife, for example, shows up 40 minutes late and doesn't answer her phone when he eventually gets worried and tries to call. The wife's boss actually gave her a last-minute task to do that took her 40 minutes. When she finally arrives, it would be condescending and ineffective to say, "You SHOULD always call me when we agree on a time to meet and you know you will be late." He is actually correct, in most cases. But she will naturally defend herself and maybe even get angry at him for getting angry at her when she had a semi-emergency. This results in an argument. But if he says, "I feel angry...or I feel discounted, or even I feel anxious when you meet me 40 minutes late and don't call me first to let me know." If she is caring wife, she will care about how he feels and WANT to change that. "I FEEL" messages don't always work, but they work about four times more often than "YOU SHOULD" messages, plus are respectful, "speaking the truth in love" as encouraged by the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:15.

PREVENTION OF CORONAVIRUS: Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing THE CDC SAID THAT THE US SHOULD PREPARE FOR A LIKELY EPIDEMIC AND LIMIT AIR TRAVEL AND LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE. HAVE BUSINESS MEETINGS BY SKYPE RATHER THAN FLYING TO A CENTRALIZED LOCATION. COLLEGES MAY DIVIDE THEIR STUDENTS INTO SMALLER CLASSES, OR, IF IT BECOMES SEVERE ENOUGH, QUIT USING CLASSES ALTOGETHER AND HAVE CLASSES ONLINE. SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS: Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans.SARS is Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus and spread around the world in 2003. It caused flu-like symptoms. SARS has a death rate of 15% overall, but people 65 and over have a much higher death rate. MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) has a death rate of 35%.MERS: Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or MERS‐CoV) that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012, but is most prevalent in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and South Korea. Typical MERS symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Pneumonia is common, but not always present. Gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea have also been reported. Some people test positive for MERS without ever having any symptoms but can still pass it along.ATLANTA- Two hundred travelers coming through Atlanta's airport recently showed potential symptoms connected to the new virus that is spreading around the globe and were designated for home quarantine.CORONAVIRUS CAN LIVE ON SURFACES FOR UP TO 9 DAYS, SCIENTISTS SAY. ON 2.25.20, THE CDC REPORTED THAT THE CORONAVIRUS IS PROBABLY GOING TO BECOME AN EPIDEMIC IN THE UNITED STATES AND IS ALREADY SPREADING TO MANY STATES.SCIENTISTS ESTIMATE THAT, IN A WORST-CASE SCENARIO, UP TO 70% OF THE WORLD POPULATION COULD BECOME INFECTED WITH CORONAVIRUS. THERE ARE 8.6 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, SO THAT WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 6 BILLION INFECTED. IF THE DEATH RATE TURNS OUT TO BE 5%, FOR EXAMPLE, THEN 300 MILLION PEOPLE WOULD DIE.CORONAVIRUS, designated COVID-19, SPREADS MORE EASILY THAT OTHER CORONAVIRUS ILLNESSES LIKE SARS OR MERS. it has not yet proven to be as deadly as its related coronavirus strands, but we don’t really know what the death rate will end up being after we get more extensive and accurate reporting. China claims only a 2.3% death rate, but there are many reasons why Chinese politicians would report a lower death rate than what is factual. Iran reports a death rate of 20%. Some time in 2020, we will have a much better idea of the actual death rate and how it compares to SARS (15% death rate) and MERS (35% death rate). LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS WHILE WE ARE BUSY MAKING OTHER PLANS. IN ITALY RIGHT NOW, WITH A NUMBER OF DEATHS ALREADY FROM CORONAVIRUS, THERE IS MUCH PANIC AND MANY GROCERY STORES ARE EMPTY AS PEOPLE PURCHASE FOOD TO STORE IF THEY HAVE TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES. IT WOULD BE WISE TO PLAN AHEAD AND MAKE PREPARATIONS IF PROPORTION TO THE ACTUAL THREAT AT THE TIME, BUT WITHOUT PANIC. WHATEVER HAPPENS IN REGARD TO THIS WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC, LIFE WILL CONTINUE TO GO ON AND SCIENTISTS WILL CONQUER THIS DISEASE LIKE THEY HAVE MOST OTHER ONES—WE HOPE—EVEN THOUGH SCIENTISTS HAVE NOT YET FOUND A CURE FOR THE COMMON COLD, ANOTHER MILDER CORONAVIRUS. UPDATE AS OF 3.12.20: YESTERDAY, ON THE ADVISE OF THE USA CORONAVIRUS TEAM OF THE CDC, WHO, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIV MED SCHOOL INFECTION SPECIALISTS AND RESEARCHERS, AND OTHER SCIENTISTS, THE ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED A 30 DAY TRAVEL BAN ON EUROPE OTHER THAN THE UK (SINCE THE UK ENFORCED QUICK TRAVEL BANS WHEN THE VIRUS WAS DISCOVERED, AS DID THE USA, SO THE INCIDENCE IN THOSE TWO COUNTRIES IS RELATIVELY LOW, WHILE EUROPE DID NOT DO TRAVEL BANS TO AND FROM CHINA AND OTHER DANGEROUS PLACES AND HAVE WIDESPREAD CORONAVIRUS. THE WHO ANNOUNCED THAT IT IS OFFICIALLY A PANDEMIC, WHICH JUST MEANS IT IS PRESENT IN MANY COUNTRIES AND THE NUMBER CONTINUES TO INCREASE. AS OF TODAY, THE AVERAGE DEATH AGE IN THE USA OF THOSE RELATIVELY FEW WHO HAVE DIED IS 80 YEARS OLD AND NOBODY UNDER 30 HAS DIED OF IT. PEOPLE 65 AND OLDER ARE MORE VULNERABLE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL CONDITIONS, SO RETIREMENT HOMES ARE ESPECIALLY BEING OBSERVED. MANY OF THE INFECTION CONTROL DOCS RECOMMEND THAT THE ELDERLY AVOID CROWDED PLACES OF 250 PEOPLE OR MORE, AVOID TRAVEL ON AIRLINES OR ESPECIALLY CRUISES, AND NOT ATTEND LARGE EVENTS LIKE SPORTING EVENTS. THE NBA SUSPENDED GAMES FOR NOW. THE NCAA FINAL FOUR WILL BE PLAYED ON TV WITH NO SALES THE TO PUBLIC. JUST THE COACHES AND SOME OF THEIR CLOSE RELATIVES OR ASSOCIATES CAN ATTEND. POLITICAL RALLIES HAVE BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED. MORE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE ELDERLY, WILL ATTEND CHURCH OR OTHER ACTIVITIES ONLINE RATHER THAN IN CROWDS. THE DEATH RATE FROM CORONAVIRUS IN THE USA IS NOT YET DETERMINED BUT IS LIKELY TO END UP AROUND THE 2% RANGE BUT ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY IN THE ELDERLY. THE DEATH RATE FROM THE COMMON FLU IS 0.1% BUT THE FLU CAN KILL ANY AGE GROUP AND THERE CAN BE 40,000 A YEAR WHO DIE PER YEAR OF THE FLU IN THE USA AND WE JUST EXPECT IT AND ACCEPT IT. THE FLU IS SPREAD TO AN AVERAGE OF 1.5 PEOPLE PER FLU VICTIM BUT THE CORONAVIRUS IS MORE TRANSMITTABLE AND CAN EVEN STAY ALIVE ON HARD SURFACES LIKE GLASS OR METAL FOR ABOUT A WEEK—POSSIBLY 9 DAYS MAX. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO WASH OUR HANDS SEVERAL TIMES A DAY WITH SOAP FOR TWENTY SECONDS OR LONGER. DON’T COUGH WITHOUT COVERING YOUR MOUTH AND STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE COUGHING. THE SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS IN THE YOUNG ARE USUALLY MUCH LESS THAN THE COMMON FLU. WITH CORONAVIRUS, THERE IS RARELY ANY NAUSEA, VOMITING OR MUSCLE ACHES LIKE THERE ARE WITH THE FLU—USUALLY JUST COUGHING AND A FEVER, AND SOMETIMES SOME SHORTNESS OF BREATH. SEVERE CASES PROGRESS TO PNEUMONIA AND POTENTIAL DEATH IN THOSE OVER 30 AND ESPECIALLY 65 OR OLDER. GREAT EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE IN THE USA TO ISOLATE AND QUARANTINE PEOPLE FOR TWO WEEKS WHO ARE POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS, MANY OF WHOM DO NOT EVEN HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS. THE NUMBER OF CASES AND DEATHS WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY INCREASE FOR THE COMING MONTH OR TWO, BUT IT IS LIKELY TO CEASE WHEN THE WARM WEATHER COMES OUT, LIKE THE FLU SEASON DOES EACH YEAR. HOPEFULLY A VACCINE WILL BE DEVELOPED BEFORE IT POTENTIALLY RETURNS IN THE FALL. SARS AND MERS ARE MUCH MORE SEVERE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMICS THAT OCCURRED IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS AND EACH CAME AND WENT AND NO LONGER OCCUR OTHER THAT POSSIBLE RARE INCIDENTS. THEY PROBABLY ALL STARTED IN BATS FIRST, THEN OTHER BITTEN ANIMALS, THEN HUMANS. SOME RECOMMEND NO LONGER SHAKING HANDS OR THE EUROPEAN TRADITION OF KISSING ON THE CHEEK WHEN GREETING FRIENDS, AT LEAST FOR THE TIME BEING UNTIL THIS CRISIS IS PAST. IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO PANIC AND TO GET CURRENT INFORMATION IN PERSPECTIVE.
