Negative relationships require participation from all sides but we can choose how much of our emotional capital is used to defuse people and the drama they create, including our own dramatics! How many of you have felt triggered reading and hearing about the Harvey Weinstein allegations? Many of our listeners have. We have. We support the #metoo movement spearheaded by actress Alyssa Milano and have a very powerful discussion with host Kristin Sunanta Walker, Melanie Vann, and Melissa Richards about sexual misconduct and abuse. We've learned that while the abuser and society may wish to paint those who come forward as people who:Can't seem to "move on" or "let things go"Are vitriolicAre unfairAre "crazy"Are only womenThis is simply not the case. Uncomfortable topics need to be discussed. Every victim and then survivor of sexual harassment has their own journey to recovery. As you evolve, your voice and understanding of what you experienced changes. It does not disappear. Being quiet supports the abuser not the abused. It also supports those who enable and act as accomplices to the abusers. This is not gender specific. The days of "men are just men" are over. For Good.Thank you for joining us on this poignant and deeply personal show.www.mentalhealthnewsradio.com

In Search of True Repentance

Join host Melanie Vann with guest Karen Watson-Jarvis. The discussion is based on an article written by Karen about how often we substitute the valuable things in this life for worthless things? We choose the words “I’m sorry,” but they have little meaning and do not represent the life transforming change that allowing God to change our hearts with true repentance represent. Does God just smile and wonder if we want to continue to trade ease and self-sufficiency for the real power of what He can do if we choose a sorrow that leads to life. Unfortunately, many of us choose a sorrow that leads to death, thinking it will somehow remove our shame, help us feel good, and give us what we deserve. On that false road we choose to justify our actions, rationalize our sin, blame others, dwell in the deep pit of self-pity, and make all sorts of excuses why we are stuck and can’t move forward and how it isn’t our fault anyway. Relationships decompensate, the innocent are condemned, marriages end, and Satan smiles as we journey on in the sorrow that leads to death. The good news is that God knows the difference and paves a path that has a clear outcome—a path that leads to life. Let’s explore His way.Karen Watson-Jarvis, MA, LCPC is a psychotherapist and has been with Meier Clinics since 1990. She is also a Certified EMDR specialist and trained in Brainspotting. She wrote the book "Christ's Touch Changes Us." She has been a keynote speaker for weekend retreats and have spoken on TV and radio. Using Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation to Help with Anxiety, with Melanie Vann - Ep. 117

My guest today, Melanie Vann, shares her insight as a clinician, on the debilitating effects of anxiety that she experienced in her life and also saw in her son as he grew up. In addition, we also discuss the benefits of being fully present, learning emotional regulation, and equine therapy to help with taking control of anxiety so it no longer controls you.Melanie is the program director for Mental Health News Radio, and also a clinician and podcaster, as well as the founder and CEO of Your Wise Therapist. She has been in the mental health field for over 15 years and obtained her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Regent University and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Old Dominion University. Her passion to help others embrace their hardships and heal has taken her to multiple realms of the mental health industry. Her expertise is multi-dimensional as she has counseled those suffering from eating disorders, brain injury, borderline personality disorder, depression and anxiety, self-mutilation, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, narcissistic abuse, and unresolved grief.During our chat on this episode of the podcast, we're talking more in-depth about understanding and coping with anxiety, and recognizing how it affects us in daily life:Melanie shares how from the time she was a young girl, she resigned herself to the idea that she was a worrier. She had no idea what anxiety was or how it was manifesting itself. She didn't understand why other kids seemed so calm and comfortable. As a child, nobody explains to you what's going on so you are left to try and figure it out for yourself, and again the cycle of perpetuating anxiety starts at a young age and we don't even realize it.One of the primary skills she used, not even realizing it, was to escape to her own mind where she felt safe and free from these anxious feelings.Learning to see the signs in your children and talking to them about what they struggle with so you can get them to help early on.We discuss how when you are unable to live in the moment and be fully present (mindfulness), it's difficult to find joy and contentment in life and consequently, anxiety can thrive. How managing anxiety is exhausting and since it can start when we're young, it carries over into adulthood.Using logic and rational thinking to combat anxiety. Expose the anxious feelings for what they are, rather than what they are trying to make you believe is true.Using writing and other coping skills to help get the feelings out of our head. How retraining our brain, to change the default reaction to specific situations that cause anxiety to spike, is a key to taking back your life.Equine therapy and the benefits of being around horses to help with anxiety.Melanie and I share some stories of our experiences with horses and how much they help you to be fully present because they themselves are always present and they will reflect back to you what you present to them. The resiliency and ability to come back to a calm state after being triggered is something that horses have down pat, and we can learn this as well. All this and so much during my insightful and inspiring chat with Melanie Vann. Join host, Melanie Vann, on Converge Autism Radio as she and seasoned guest, Stephanie Holmes, MA, BCCC, discuss how to move past autism awareness and into acceptance. There is still stigma surrounding autism and the behaviors that are associated with it. With the help of many amazing advocates like Dr. Temple Grandin and others, we have come far on the path of autism awareness but true acceptance comes when we can look past the diagnosis and see there is a child or adult behind it. Melanie and Stephanie discuss how we can start to accept those with autism and help them grow into productive, happy, and adjusted members of society. Stephanie C. Holmes graduated from Campbell University summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1994. Her highest held degree is a Master’s degree in Counseling obtained through Liberty University in May of 2000. Stephanie held her NC LPC from March 2002-June 2008. Another interesting show with Dr. Paul Meier, Melanie Vann, and Kristin Walker on how to deal with toxic people (energy vampires, narcissists, etc.). We ask the questions: Are we behaving toxically? Is this a difficult time in our own lives and adding stress to the people we love? The answer can definitely be yes for everyone. For most people, however, they are loved through these times because their friends and family realize this is short term. The person is experiencing pain and has a history of going to therapy, working on their issues, and evolving into a more peaceful version of themselves. With some this is a life long pattern with a refusal to take responsibility for their toxic behavior. It's everyone else's fault. It's their depression or other ailments. They are allergic to being at fault and accepting wrong doing. In this case, it is necessary to step away from the relationship especially if it has become abusive. Sometimes letting them go by holding up hard boundaries is the healthiest thing you can do for your own self-care. www.meierclinics.comwww.mhnrnetworks.com

After such experience, the organism often fails to learn or accept "escape" or "avoidance" in new situations where such behavior would likely be effective. In other words, the organism learned that it is helpless in situations where there is a presence of aversive stimuli, has accepted that it has lost control, and thus gives up trying. Such an organism is said to have acquired learned helplessness. Learned helplessness theory is the view that clinical depression and related mental illnesses may result from such real or perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.www.meierclinics.com

Seeing the best in others when we aren't well boundaried can lead us down roads where we end up in trauma. Many toxic people count on us wearing those glasses and keeping them foggy. We cover a lot of ground on this show with our original trio of Melanie Vann, Melissa Richards, and Kristin Walker. The message is simple though - wear those glasses proudly, just remember to keep the lenses clear. www.mentalhealthnewsradio.com
