We're just about a week out from Election Day, and I have to say, this is what I live for. These are the kind of stories that really scratch the itch for anybody who loves the game of politics as much as I do. We've got real contests, real dollars behind them, and actual electoral stakes. Yes, I know it's not a presidential year, but this is the sandbox where some serious groundwork gets laid. And for as much as I hate the off-off-year calendar, I love election season more than anything. Here's my breakdown of where I think the chips are going to fall in November.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Starting in California, we've got Prop 50. Gavin Newsom has staked a big chunk of political capital on this one. It's pitched as a pushback on Republican redistricting, with the messaging ultimately landing on “protecting America from Trump.” What started off messy got refined quickly, and with Newsom's team sticking the landing, I see a 10 to 15 point win. McCarthy was supposed to pour in $100 million to fight it, but as of now, the actual spending is suspiciously light. All that adds up to a clear Democratic win.Now onto Virginia: Winsome Earl Sears vs. Abigail Spanberger. I'm heading up to D.C. this weekend, and originally thought I'd be bouncing around Virginia to catch campaign stops. But Sears? She's nowhere to be found. Spanberger, while not the most electrifying candidate, has managed to avoid major blunders post-Jay Jones scandal. The polling tells a consistent story; Spanberger holding a lead that's grown since the scandal broke. I'm calling it Spanberger by eight. Could be tighter, but it's hard to see Sears overcoming the fundamentals working against her.As for Jay Jones, man, what a collapse. DUI, community service for his own super PAC, and leaked texts about shooting a rival politician? That's how you lose an election. Miyares hasn't trailed since that story broke. Nate Silver might be holding out hope, pointing to early voting and ticket-splitting, but my money's on Miyares by one. A close one, but still a loss for Jones. This scandal made a difference, period.New Yorkers better get ready for Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He hasn't been behind at all in public polling, all while Cuomo is clawing for relevance. Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa isn't pulling enough Republican support to matter to anyone but Cuomo. The energy just isn't there for a last-minute surprise. Mamdani by 13.And then there's New Jersey. The Mikie Sherrill vs. Jack Ciattarelli race is the sleeper of the night. Sherrill has led for most of the race, but recent polling has things tightening. Trafalgar and Coefficient both show her up by one. Republicans are feeling bullish, and if this ends within three points, they'll have reason to. That would mean New Jersey, at minimum, becomes a fringe battleground in 2028. Not quite Arizona-level swing, but enough to force Democrats to spend real money defending it. I'm predicting Sherrill wins — but just barely.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:32 - Election Predictions00:23:08 - Update00:24:53 - Trade Deals00:30:58 - Shutdown00:38:10 - Israel00:44:36 - Interview with Austin Padgett01:38:03 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. This week we discuss the dangers of impaired driving. Impaired driving poses significant dangers, leading to thousands of fatalities and injuries each year due to reduced coordination, judgment, and reaction times. Definition and Causes Impaired driving occurs when an individual operates a vehicle while under the influence of substances such as alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, or illicit drugs. These substances can severely impair essential driving skills, including visual function, mental judgment, and motor skills. Statistics Alcohol-Related Fatalities: In the United States, approximately 29 people die daily in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for about 30% of all traffic-related deaths. Drug Impairment: A significant number of drivers involved in serious crashes test positive for drugs. In a study, 51.6% of drivers involved in serious injury and fatal crashes had at least one drug in their system prior to the incident. Effects of Impairment Alcohol: Even a single drink can impair driving abilities, leading to decreased reaction times and poor decision-making. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is typically set at 0.08%, but impairment can begin at lower levels. Drugs: Both legal and illegal drugs can impair driving. For instance, marijuana can affect coordination and judgment, while stimulants like cocaine can lead to aggressive driving behaviors. Medications: Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can cause drowsiness and dizziness, further increasing the risk of accidents. Preventive Measures Education and Awareness: Public campaigns aimed at educating drivers about the dangers of impaired driving are crucial. Understanding the effects of substances on driving can help reduce incidents. Designated Drivers: Encouraging the use of designated drivers, taxis, or rideshare services can significantly reduce the risk of impaired driving. Legal Enforcement: Strict enforcement of DUI laws and sobriety checkpoints can deter impaired driving behaviors. Conclusion Impaired driving is a serious public safety issue that leads to numerous preventable deaths and injuries each year. By understanding the dangers and implementing effective preventive measures, we can work towards reducing the incidence of impaired driving and ensuring safer roads for everyone.
Top Stories for October 28th Publish Date: October 28th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 28th and Happy Birthday to Julia Roberts I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: KIA Mall Of Georgia STORY 1: SPARC, Motel to Home help homeless single-parent families get back into housing Life hit Faith Busano like a freight train. “The day we moved into our last apartment, I lost my job,” she said. Originally from California, Faith, 32, had bounced from Michigan to Georgia, trying to find stability for herself and her two daughters, 3-year-old Love and 13-year-old Harmoni. But things kept falling apart. Family couldn’t help. The apartment didn’t work out. And when the job disappeared, so did their home. They ended up in an extended-stay motel—what was supposed to be a temporary fix. But weeks turned into months, and the motel became a trap. Her toddler’s energy was endless, her teen was struggling with mental health, and Faith herself was barely holding on. She worked customer service, drove for DoorDash, styled hair—anything to scrape by. But the grind was relentless. Then, one day, a flier changed everything. The motel was handing out groceries, and someone slipped her information about SPARC’s Motel to Home program. It felt like a lifeline. SPARC, led by Joy Monroe, helps families like Faith’s escape the cycle of extended-stay living. The program covers deposits, first month’s rent, and helps families transition into stable housing. But it’s not easy—there are requirements, and families have to actively work toward qualifying. Faith did the work. She found an apartment within her budget, got approved, and finally moved in. Monroe, who started SPARC to support single moms like herself, knows the struggle all too well. Faith is still rebuilding—working toward her medical assistant certification, dreaming of opening her own business someday. But for now, she’s just grateful to have a place to call home. STORY 2: E-SPLOST headlines countywide ballot — but faces challenges This fall, Gwinnett voters have plenty to decide, but nothing’s stirring the pot quite like the E-SPLOST referendum. Here’s the deal: Gwinnett County Public Schools and Buford City Schools want to extend the 1% sales tax for another six years, aiming to rake in $1.47 billion—most of it ($1.44 billion) for GCPS. The money would go toward maintaining aging schools (average age: 24 years), fixing roofs, replacing HVAC systems, and even funding a new career and technical education center. Safety upgrades and Chromebooks? Also on the list. Supporters say it’s essential. Opponents? They’re calling out wasteful spending—like a $7 million church purchase with no clear plan. Turnout’s been dismal so far—just 1.7% of voters have shown up. Maybe it’s the confusion of needing multiple ballots in some areas. Or maybe people just aren’t paying attention. Either way, the stakes are high. STORY 3: Gwinnett police chief pushes back in Peachtree Corners debate Nancy McGregor doesn’t see the point. The Peachtree Corners resident has been a supporter of the Gwinnett County Police Department for years, and after attending a community meeting with Police Chief J.D. McClure, she’s even more convinced: the city doesn’t need its own police force. “When you’ve got an elite department like Gwinnett’s—with their training, resources, and expertise—why would we try to replicate that?” McGregor said. The meeting, held at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, was the first time residents heard directly from county police about the city’s proposal to break away and form its own department. McClure didn’t hold back. Crime in Peachtree Corners? Down across the board. Robberies dropped 40% this year, assaults 41%, and commercial burglaries a staggering 66%. But it’s not just about crime stats. McClure laid out what the city would lose: specialized units like SWAT, K9, and Behavioral Health, plus the county’s ability to surge officers during emergencies. Residents like Paul La Motte left the meeting impressed. “I’ve always been against the idea of a city police department, but now? I’m even more confident Gwinnett’s got this.” McGregor agreed. “Hearing their side just confirmed it for me. They’re doing a great job.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Rotary joint manufacturer maierAMERICA marks 25 years in Gwinnett Back in 2000, Germany’s Christian Maier GmbH & Co. KG decided to plant roots in the U.S., and they picked Gwinnett County as their home base. Fast forward 25 years, and their subsidiary, maierAMERICA, is still here—thriving, growing, and making waves in the Norcross area. This week, the company celebrated two big milestones: 25 years in Gwinnett and 100 years since its parent company’s founding. The company’s growth has been impressive. Just last year, they tripled their space to 20,500 square feet. Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson marked the occasion with a proclamation, calling maierAMERICA’s success a testament to the county’s role as a hub for international business. German Consul General Melanie Moltmann and other officials echoed the sentiment, celebrating the deep ties between Germany and the U.S. STORY 5: Georgia Supreme Court upholds conviction from fatal DUI in Gwinnett Victor Allen Smith’s conviction is sticking. The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously upheld the 2023 verdict that found Smith, 59, guilty of killing 22-year-old Hugo Natanael Martinez while fleeing a state trooper in Gwinnett County. Smith, who was sentenced to life in prison, had argued that evidence about his 18-year license suspension unfairly swayed the jury. But the court didn’t buy it, ruling the evidence against him was overwhelming. Back in March 2022, Smith was clocked speeding over 80 mph on I-85—then hit 120 mph trying to outrun the trooper. Martinez, standing by his truck on the shoulder, sadly never stood a chance. Smith struck him, sending him over a retaining wall. STORY 6: ART BEAT: Nocross Gallery's 'Shapes' fundraiser features artists in a friendly bidding war The bidding’s still going strong at Norcross Gallery and Studios! Their annual fundraiser, “Norcross Shapes,” runs through Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., and it’s a must-see (and bid) event. This month-long auction, which kicked off Oct. 5, supports everything from artist programs and community outreach to high school exhibitions and ongoing classes. The best part? You can either outbid the competition or pay the “full price” to snag your favorite piece on the spot. The artwork is as diverse as it gets—paintings, pottery, jewelry, even gift baskets. And the stories behind the pieces? Just as colorful. This year’s auction has no size limits, so expect everything from tiny treasures to statement pieces. Swing by the gallery at 116 Carlyle Street in downtown Norcross, open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t miss it! STORY 7: Gladiators Legend: ECHL Hall of Famer Cam Brown Dies at 56 When the Gwinnett Gladiators needed a leader back in 2003, they found one in Cam Brown. Fresh out of retirement, the Canadian left winger joined the brand-new Duluth-based team, bringing grit, heart, and a lifetime of hockey experience. Over three seasons, he became the face of the franchise, leading them to a Kelly Cup Final and scoring the first goal in team history. On Sunday, fans and friends were devastated to learn Brown had passed away at just 56, reportedly in a motorcycle accident. Brown’s No. 44 jersey hangs in the rafters, a permanent reminder of his impact. He’s the only Gladiator in the ECHL Hall of Fame, a league he helped shape with 789 games, 206 goals, and 2,425 penalty minutes. Old school? Absolutely. But that’s what made him special. Brown leaves behind his wife, two children, and a legacy that stretches far beyond the rink. In this hilarious yet jaw-dropping episode of Scary Savannah and Beyond, Brett and Crystal return from their new “secret” studio to deliver the latest chaos in the Tybee Island Police Blotter. From drunken “designated drivers” and golf cart DUIs to mysterious magnetic letter messages, porch pirates, and even a public urination arrest, the island's law enforcement saw it all this month. The duo adds their trademark Southern humor and witty commentary to each bizarre police report — including a fight over selfies, a stolen backpack full of “jewels,” and a man crashing his e-bike into a trash can mid-DUI. Closing out the hour — World Series Game #1 kicks off in Toronto, with fans watching the order of the national anthems as the first pitch approaches.

MIGRANT WOES CONTINUE THROUGHOUT EUROPE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: The war continues as before. Following Israeli strikes in Lebanon a few days ago, more significant airstrikes were reported in southern Lebanon overnight. Yesterday evening the Israeli Knesset voted to annex the West Bank, a move which has drawn slight criticism from the United States due to the war continuing to widen after the ceasefire was broken last week. SECSTATE Marco Rubio condemned this vote and VP Vance stated that Israel will not be allowed to annex the West Bank.Italy: A man was arrested on Tuesday after attempting to kidnap a child from a stroller near the train station in Bologna. Local authorities state that the man, who is an illegal immigrant from Gambia, approached a family on the sidewalk and attempted to grab their newborn child from their stroller. After local citizens fought back against him, he fled the scene before being arrested later in an adjacent park. The suspect has not been identified due to allegedly being a juvenile, but locals did state that he was an asylum seeker living at the local migrant housing complex near the attack site.-HomeFront-California: The driver of a semi truck who caused a fatal pileup on I-10 yesterday has been arrested. Jashanpreet Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, was arrested on multiple counts after the crash, including DUI. 3x people were killed during the crash, and 4x others wounded.Analyst Comment: Singh was illegally in the United States after walking over the southern border in 2022. After being initially detained, he was released into society by Customs and Border Patrol due to the catch-and-release open-border policy at the time.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In Ireland, the situation remains as tense as expected. One of the major issues with discerning the truth regarding events on the ground is the now-infamous Online Safety Act, which has been adopted by the European Union as the Digital Services Act (DSA) This is more or less the EU copying Starmer's homework and bringing the Online Safety Act to most of Europe. The DSA and the local regulations put into effect by the Irish government (most notably the chairman of the media commission Jeremy Godfrey) have resulted in a lot of the footage of protest activity being banned from being seen from Irish IP addresses. Users on X for example, have noted that their content is banned from view in Ireland, even content that is benign in nature but related to protest activity. This means that either the Irish government and/or the European Commission itself has ordered X to remove certain content by flagging it as "adult content" and thus subject to the Digital Services Act.In other words, exactly what everyone thought would happen, has happened. And not only happened once, but has been industrialized. Content which makes government agencies look bad, or otherwise highlights the crimes of violent migrants gets flagged as "adult content" and therefore is subject to censorship via the Online Safety Act and requires a photo ID (or a digital ID) to see. Right now, there are probably a lot of people in Ireland that have no understanding of the scale of protests and demonstrations (or even what the issue is all about) due to this censorship. This has been made worse by other larger issues that have actually made it into the mainstream press.Yesterday, the family of Josef Puska was sentenced for their various roles in the murder of Ashling Murphy. These sentences have inflamed tensions once more due to the nature of the crime itself, and the systemic coverup of the incident. While walking on a hiking path back in 20

Send us a textMany times, Fairfax criminal defense lawyer Jon Katz has quoted this great passage from the Kung Fu television pilot with David Carradine (1972): “Perceive the way of nature and no force of man can harm you. Do not meet a wave head on: avoid it. You do not have to stop force: it is easier to redirect it. Learn more ways to preserve rather than destroy. Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim. Maim rather than kill. For all life is precious nor can any be replaced.” This is an ideal way to master courtroom battle and to handle any conflict. When I learned that Kung Fu's creators Ed Spielman and Howard Friedlander are still alive, I started looking for them to invite them onto my Beat the Prosecution podcast. Hitting deadends in finding their email addresses, I revisited Kung Fu chronicler Herbie J Pilato, who blew me away in accepting my interview invitation within hours. The Kung Fu stand-alone pilot (Kung Fu: The Way of the Tiger, the Sign of the Dragon) blew away the nearly-nine year old me in multiple ways through multiple layers. Here I was learning both the concept and way to pursue a path other than brute force, whether through studying, verbal combat, sports or physical fighting. That is not to say that I was a quick learner, but that the path was now visible and open to me. By now, it all comes together. The wu wei of acting in harmony with the universe's natural flow. The path of zero, with no chasing while fully engaging with the opponent. The cleaning with self identity through Ho'oponopono. Finding internal peace no matter what is happening around me and beyond. Kung Fu's initial creator Ed Spielman did not spearhead this story from an armchair, but instead studied Mandarin at Brooklyn College, and conducted research for instance in New York's Chinatown while also being influenced by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, Herbie says" "The show's writers gathered information from Confucius, Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, Zen Buddhism, and the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, all of which share a similar theme: Gentleness, peace and compassion are of the utmost importance if one is to have a spiritually-sound and happy existence." Herbie sent me his great recent extensive Retro Fan Magazine article "Kung Fu and the Eternal Spring of 'Grasshopper'- A Look Back at TV's Classic Eastern Western."This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. Become a Relative & send some loveAn artist, one small-room origin story, and a hard-earned belief that relationships outlast numbers. We open with NonPareil open mic at Jirani, where song choice taught us the stakes of a room and live bands pushed him beyond backing tracks. From church keys and family jam sessions to SoundCloud Fridays and DMV road-test feedback, we map the indie grind that turns taste into craft and stage nerves into presence. The mood shifts when a DUI derails the plan, and two weeks in county produce unexpected clarity. Writing in a cramped routine birthed the Rehab album—introspective, honest, and fueled by the promise to never let pain go to waste. We get practical about drinking smarter, setting boundaries at parties, and building systems that keep autopilot from running your life. Then fatherhood arrives, and everything sharpens. A four-year-old son becomes the reason to finish a 15-track project called Situationships, a raw look at how people can become vices and how purpose breaks the loop.We geek out on mixtape culture, missing originals, and why curation still shapes taste—Wiz's Cabin Fever, Gucci deep cuts, and the frustration of reordered tracklists. AI sneaks into the studio as a fast demo ally, not a soul replacement. We talk Suno experiments, the “feel” only live players bring, and why multiple takes and real direction matter. If you're an artist or a fan who cares about songwriting, production, and the craft behind a great performance, this one's for you. On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants to share their journey with others.Growing up in a small Arizona town, Alex Carey “had good grades and a ton of friends,” but by her mid-teens the party culture and a move to the Phoenix Valley accelerated risky choices that culminated in an adolescent placement at a residential treatment program—an experience she describes as shame-based and traumatizing, leaving her more wounded than helped. After returning home, Alex spiraled: a DUI at 17, mounting alcohol use, surgeries that introduced her to opioids, and several “summer vacation” trips to adult treatment that didn't stick because she was still performing rather than telling the truth. Everything changed in 2017—after a relapse, an overdose, and waking up from life support—when Alex walked into treatment committed to radical honesty about her pain and needs. That honesty became the turning point: she embraced recovery, rebuilt from nothing, and later sought deeper healing through intensive trauma work, including EMDR. Today, approaching eight years sober at the time of recording, Alex is a married mom to a two-year-old, a photographer at heart, and a treatment professional connecting people to trauma-informed care at Pinnacle Peak Recovery. In this conversation, she contrasts coercive adolescent models with adult treatment that respects autonomy, shares grounded advice for parents and inspires hope in young adults who fear treatment will always look like it did when they were kids. Alex's story is a testament to what becomes possible when recovery is honest, individualized, and trauma-informed.NOTE: The podcasts in this series can include sensitive subjects such as suicide, self-harm, substance abuse, hospitalizations, psychotic episodes, and other traumatic experiences which include parts of the treatment journey. If you've ever wondered whether just carrying a large sum of cash could land you in legal hot water—or what steps you can take if it happens to you—this episode is a must-listen.Host Steve Palmer is joined by Troy Hendrickson, a law student, to tackle the not-so-theoretical question: What really happens if the police take your cash during a routine traffic stop?Steve and Troy unravel the complexities behind asset forfeiture, sharing real-life cases where drivers have had tens of thousands of dollars seized by law enforcement—sometimes with little explanation or due process. Together, discuss the legal procedures that should protect your property rights, what “due process” really means in these situations, and how a legal team actually fights to recover seized money. They also dig into the difference between criminal charges and civil asset forfeiture, dispel myths about what cash in your car “proves,” and highlight the burdens of proof on both sides. Plus, they candidly share the frustrations and realities of navigating police departments, public records, and the sometimes slow-moving wheels of justice.Moments00:00 "Due Process and Contraband Notices"03:57 Criminal Indictment and Asset Forfeiture07:01 "Seeking Legal Help"09:48 "Money Laundering Charges Negotiation"13:58 Drug Mule Traffic Stop Explained17:13 Money Possession Isn't Criminal22:54 Roadside Bribe in Costa RicaHere are 3 key takeaways you should know:Due Process Should Prevail (But Doesn't Always): The system is supposed to require official notice and a chance to fight for your seized property. But real-world cases often leave people in limbo, unable to get a straight answer or their assets back without taking legal action.Just Having Cash Is Not a Crime: Simply possessing large sums of money—even if it sets off police suspicions—is not illegal. The government needs something more than "it looks fishy" or "a dog sniffed it" to justify permanent seizure.Challenging Seizure Is Complicated and Costly: To recover seized money, you often have to initiate a civil lawsuit, shouldering the burden to prove it's your property and that the government is holding it. This process can be lengthy, expensive, and stacked against innocent owners.Submit your questions to www.lawyertalkpodcast.com.Recorded at Channel 511.Stephen E. RUNDOWN Was this the single greatest weekend in Seattle sports history? Mitch and Hotshot relive Friday night's 15-inning epic at T-Mobile Park as the Mariners advanced to the ALCS — Hotshot shares his in-stadium perspective, spilled beer and all, describing the crowd as “ear-splitting, like 1995 all over again.” Mitch calls Bryce Miller's Game 1 masterpiece in Toronto “legendary” and compares it to the Mariners' own must-win over Detroit. Then comes the forgotten hero of the weekend: Washington QB Damon Williams Jr., whose 538-yard, four-touchdown night went largely unseen while fans watched baseball on their phones. Add in the Seahawks' 20–12 win over Jacksonville (seven sacks despite missing key defenders), a Kraken overtime winner, and even Humpy the Salmon's long-awaited race victory — and Mitch declares it “the most joy-filled Seattle weekend in decades.” Mitch welcomes Joe Doyle (Over Slot) and Brady Farkas (Refuse to Lose Podcast) after Seattle's gritty 3–1 win to open the ALCS in Toronto — a game nobody expected them to take. The trio break down Bryce Miller's six-inning gem on three days' rest, the early escape that steadied him, and how his righty-righty splitter and held-velocity heater set the tone. They praise the bullpen trio of Spire, Brash, and Muñoz, the clutch base-running by Randy Arozarena, and Cal Raleigh's homer that flipped the energy of the entire series. Mitch is joined by Brady Henderson (ESPN.com) and Jacson Bevens (Cigar Thoughts) after the Seahawks' 20-12 road win over Jacksonville — a cross-country statement built on a revived pass rush and Sam Darnold's continued efficiency. The trio break down Byron Murphy's monster day (2 sacks, 7 pressures), a seven-sack team effort that could've reached double digits, and the coaching adjustments Mike McDonald made one week after the Tampa Bay meltdown. They highlight Darnold's nearly flawless 295-yard, 2-TD outing and debate whether he's already a top-tier QB in the NFC. CBS analyst Rick Neuheisel joins Mitch after witnessing Indiana's stunning 30–20 win over Oregon in Eugene — the Hoosiers' first-ever road win over a top-five team. Rick praises head coach Kurt Signetti for his “keep-it-inside” defensive discipline and authenticity, calling him “hotter than Texas chili” as Penn State's likely next target after James Franklin's firing. They discuss the money storm brewing in the Big Ten's upcoming $2.4 billion media deal, why booster influence now drives coaching turnover, and how NIL has reshaped the sport's economy.
