Meet Cameron Richards, an honest and hard-working New York State licensed massage therapist and owner of Somatic Massage Therapy. Did you know that the Greek word "Somatic" means relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind.Cameron shares his origin story in the field, explaining how a job loss led him to pursue massage therapy despite initial reservations, and details his journey from working for others to building his own successful spa. He emphasizes the importance of providing a professional experience to counter negative stereotypes and highlights how building trust through clear communication, a welcoming environment, and skilled therapists is crucial for client satisfaction and business growth. The discussion also touches on marketing strategies, including email and text message campaigns for special offers and memberships, as well as the spa's work with specific client groups like teachers and pregnant women.Book a Massage Therapy Spa Session with Somatic here >>Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa and how did it start?Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa is a professional massage therapy and spa located in Floral Park, on the border of Queens and Nassau County in New York. The business was founded by Cameron, a New York State licensed massage therapist with 15 years of experience. His journey into massage therapy began unexpectedly after a job loss. Initially hesitant about massage, he was considering acupuncture at a trade school recommended by a friend. An administrator at the school suggested he complete the massage program first, get licensed, and then pursue acupuncture. While the acupuncture plan didn't pan out due to student loans, Cameron discovered a passion for massage and built his business from working out of his home to renting a room in a chiropractor's office, and eventually opening his current ground-floor location with multiple treatment rooms and therapists. What makes Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa different from other spas?Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa focuses on providing a professional and results-oriented experience. They prioritize building trust with clients, especially in an industry that can face negative perceptions. This is achieved through a welcoming and professional environment, well-trained therapists wearing uniforms and name badges, thorough intake processes to understand client needs, and a focus on creating a relaxing ambiance with elements like aromatherapy and soft music. They aim to be more than a "cookie cutter" service, offering personalized treatments and actively working with clients to produce desired results for their pain or stress. How can someone contact Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa or book an appointment?Potential clients within the Floral Park, NY area can contact Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa through their website at somaticmassagepc.com. You can also text the spa at 516-447-4373 or call directly to book an appointment at 516-686-9557. The spa is conveniently located at 113 Jericho Turnpike, Floral Park, NY 11001 and is accessible by bus, the Long Island Railway, and ride-sharing services, with the added benefit of free parking. We can't wait to serve you at Somatic Massage Therapy & Spa!More Resources ⬇️>> Join our club community for exclusive information

RockerMike and Rob Presents: John F. NooneI grew up in a small hamlet on Long Island called Floral Park. I am the youngest of eight siblings and the only one born in Floral Park. My mom was pregnant with me when we moved into our storybook home in 1963. I am now sixty years old and have lived in many places, but to this day, the majority of my dreams take place in my childhood home of Floral Park. About a year ago I had a dream that I was helping my mother retrieve some boxes from the attic. There was an unfinished section of the attic where my dad laid plywood across the rafters and we stored boxes of Christmas decorations, empty suitcases and bric-a-brac.In this dream, my mother asked me to bring her a cardboard box. But as I got close to it, I saw a bird's nest with a strange looking skeleton curled up inside. When I picked up the nest I awoke and immediately wrote down every detail I could remember. I could still see the strange skeleton with my eyes half closed, trying not to forget what it looked like, I quickly drew it with a ballpoint pen.The next day as I re-read my scribbled notes and studied the skeleton drawing I thought, 'what the heck does this mean'?And so I started writing my novel, 'The Plain Field'. In little over a year I have finished the three books of this trilogy. Releasing soon will be my second book, 'The Plain Field / Shadow Twins' and then the finale, "The Plain Field / Eyes and Ash'.Noone's debut novel, “The Plain Field,” is set in his childhood home of Floral Park. The story follows the O'Hare family as they move into a house on Plainfield Avenue, uncovering local folklore and hidden truths intertwined with their own family's secrets. The narrative delves into themes of mystery and the supernatural, reflecting the enigmatic allure of Floral Park. In addition to his writing, Noone draws inspiration from his dreams and life experiences, often incorporating them into his storytelling. He credits his “healthy Irish ability to exaggerate” as a contributing factor to his creative process. Noone has engaged with his local community through events such as book signings and Q&A sessions, including one held at the Floral Park Knights of Columbus to celebrate the release of “The Plain Field.” For readers interested in exploring Noone's work, “The Plain Field” is available in paperback and eBook formats through various retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target. https://www.instagram.com/johnfnoone?igsh=eXRuNXNwZ3RnNTVihttps://www.facebook.com/share/1Ck9jkrzdT/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://www.amazon.com/stores/John-F.-Noone/author/B0DBRS7QJB?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_16&sr=1-16&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=truehttps://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-plain-field-john-f-noone/1146071023#AmericanIndianDrama#SuburbanThriller#SecretAgents#Paranormal#OrganizedCrime#IrishMafia#HistoricalFiction#supernatural#Suspense#Mystery#FamilyDrama#ContemporaryFiction#Thriller

In this special episode James talks with his friend Tom Payne. Tom is one of the most dedicated, passionate, optimistic and inspiring people you'll ever meet, there just isn't enough room on Earth to fit his big heart. He wears many hats as fitness coach, personal trainer, martial artist, and DJ/rapper. He is a student of learning. He is continuously training - not just for himself, but to work towards earning certifications to ensure he is the best teacher and coach to his students. One of his true passions as health coach and educator is working with the special needs community, especially the autistic community. He has also earned his Level 1 Certified Professional certificate from Autism Fitness to better serve his special needs clients. Unfortunately Toms business location was affected by a tragic fire in Floral Park, NY on Monday, April 17. Just months before the fire, Tom was so proud to show off the recent expansion and upgrades to his gym. Within hours of the devastating fire, all Tom could think about was how disappointed his special needs students would be because they wouldn't have a place to train. And within just a couple of days, another local gym owner has generously lent Tom some space so he can continue training these students. Please join me in supporting Tom by donating and/or helping share this fundraiser so we can help Tom rebuild the House of Payne.

Colleen Marquise, Associate Archivist at the University of Michigan-Flint, Francis Willson-Thompson Library, takes podcast listeners on a virtual tour of the Genesee County (MI) Historical Center archive collection. This historical collection has a fascinating collection of oral histories, documents, papers, etc. The Center has three primary collections: Flint Labor History, Civil Rights, and Community Organizations such as the UAW Local 599. The local archives also contain the most definitive collection of materials on Flint area community development. The construction of I-475 through the heart of Flint was part of the disastrous urban renewal program that wiped out Flint's Floral Park and St. John Street neighborhoods. Memories of those African-American neighborhoods are found in a collection of recorded oral histories about the people, families, and culture. The Center also has a remarkable collection of oral history materials ranging from musical histories of the area, including rapper MC Breed, Ira Dorsey, and others going back to Flint bands in the 1960s. The Genesee Historical Center has recently developed a history collection about the COVID pandemic and protests. Colleen Marquise shares with the podcast listeners stories about prominent Flint area historical figures such as Genora Johnson and Rev Bradford Pengelly, the colorful rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church during the 1920s. This virtual podcast tour of the University of Michigan-Flint, Francis Willson-Thompson Library is fascinating. This episode is Part 1 of a two-part podcast. Dick Wolfe moved with his family from Floral Park to Oakdale in 1940. In these excerpts from a longer oral history interview he gave to the Long Island Home Front project, he describes the bucolic nature of Oakdale during his early years. His family lived on Chicken Street (now Dale Drive) and the surrounding area was dominated by dairy farms.  Dick recalls following the war news on the radio and through film reels, as well as local landmarks like Bronco Charlie's on Main Street and the nearby towering windmill, visible from the Great South Bay. His most vivid memories, though, involve the paratroopers who would fall from the sky on Sundays to take place in war games along Brook Street.

Purple Bagels? WHAT?!! We had the privilege this week of stopping by one of the premiere bagel shop's in Queens, Tulip Bagels of Floral Park. Owned by a good friend and young business mogul in the making, Anthony Kelly (@anthonykellyy). Not only did he invite us into his world but he also greeted us with our very own Purple Bagels! And to top it all off he honored us with the new fall addition to his menu "The PCXC", which is an everything bagel loaded with veggie cream cheese, vintage grape jelly from the hills of Tuscany, and extra butter (available every Sunday for the duration of the NFL season, starting September 8th). Anthony brought us into his world and let us in on how his dream of owning his own bagel shop, which began 20 years ago at the ripe age of 12, all came into fruition. During our show he joined in on some Purple Cup banter, starting with one of his child heroes, ex-governor Andrew Cuomo (Uncle Andy), and how misunderstood most Italians are when showing what they deem as affection. This week's #BrunchBanter brought with it some interesting insights as to what each of us (now in our 30's) would advise the 20 year olds out there based off our own experience. We talk about Ant's team, The Lakers, bringing in all these old heads and how we feel sports organizations should handle the aging vets on their beloved squads. We delve into PJ Washington's mishap with that IG loose-goose, and much more! Stop by and pay Anthony a visit (you will NOT be disappointed) at; Tulip Bagels: 175 Tulip Avenue, Floral Park NY 11001

George Anthony Devolder Santos announced his candidacy for New York’s 3rd Congressional District which includes most of the North Shore of Long Island, expands from northwestern Suffolk County, across northern Nassau County and into far northeastern Queens. Long Island communities in the district include Manhasset, Huntington, Northport, Commack, Dix Hills, Plainview, Bethpage, Hicksville, Syosset, Glen Cove, Roslyn, Port Washington, and Great Neck. Queens neighborhoods in the district include Little Neck, Whitestone, Glen Oaks, and Floral Park. U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi (D) currently represents the district and has been in office since 2017. The announcement was made via press release on November 12. Devolder Santos who is running as a Republican said in his announcement, “America is under attack. This time the attack is from within. It’s coming from radical leftists who are trying to destroy our most basic traditions and the very foundations of our Constitutional Republic. They are demonizing the free market system and capitalism, working tirelessly to destroy the bill of rights and most of all trying to impose their will and misconception of what makes a free and fair society on all of us. I want to be the candidate who will represent all of the constituents in New York’s Third Congressional District.” Born in Jackson Heights, Queens to immigrant parents, George Anthony Devolder Santos grew up in a tight-knit family. He attended Baruch College and graduated in 2010 with a bachelor's in economics and finance. Devolder Santos’ career is finance. He started out at CitiGroup as an associate, where he quickly advanced to become associate asset manager in the real estate division of the firm. Soon after he was offered a position at a growing Turkish-based Tech hospitality firm MetGlobal, where he led business development efforts growing the U.S. presence of the firm. He is currently at LinkBridge Investors, where he quickly advanced to become one of the youngest vice presidents in the industry. He now leads the Americas region business development team. His passion for helping others started from an early age. His mother founded an institution in Brazil, her native country, to help impoverished families providing non-perishable food monthly for well over 18 years. In the mid 1990’s, his mother and friends instituted a grassroots daily operation to distribute sandwiches around the Northeast Queens area to homeless individuals. Devolder Santos was a part of this effort from a young age. He and his family also engaged in helping children with EB-(Epidermolysis Bullosa) through various nonprofit organizations across the country supporting children worldwide, they have been proud financers of organizations that help these children in remote parts of the world where they are denied basic hygiene to care for their wounds. Devolder Santos founded and ran a nonprofit 501(c)(3) called Friends of Pets United (FOPU) from 2013-18, an animal rescue and TNR (trap neuter and release) organization. The campaign’s key issues are immigration reform, the economy, specifically tax reform and balancing the budget, and veterans’ affairs. Also of vital concern are defending our Constitution, mental health, education, and of course MS13 which generated attention from the public, law enforcement, and policymakers. MS13 preys on our youth and Devolder Santos says he will make it his mission to use whatever resources available to him to fight this serious problem and keep our streets safe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Olga Tokarczuk napisała w mediach społecznościowych: "Radość i wzruszenie odebrały mi mowę. Literackim Noblem zostało dotąd uhonorowanych czworo Polaków - Henryk Sienkiewicz, Władysław Reymont, Czesław Miłosz i Wisława Szymborska. (IAR)

It's a uniquely difficult subject to cover, and one that has a unique interpretation within the city, whether you witnessed it first-hand or have come to understand it by living in the city and walking the same streets. I won't be playing excerpts from eyewitness video of people's final moments. I won't be reinterpreting the attack as a patriotic celebration. I will ask that you look around you and treat your fellow New Yorkers with kindness and compassion to honor those we lost, who were also regular, everyday New Yorkers, walking these same streets. Kindness is stronger than hate. — 18 years ago: The September 11th attacks destroy three buildings in the World Trade Center complex, killing 2,606 people in and around the buildings and 147 aboard the two planes ☮️. Also 18 years ago, just one week after the September 11th attacks, A benefit concert and telethon is simulcast across 35 major television channels and raises over $200 million for the September 11th Fund — 'America: A Tribute to Heroes' featured musical performances from New York, London, and Los Angeles, and a variety of celebrities both hosting the event and answering calls. The money raised went toward cash assistance, counseling, and other services for individuals and businesses impacted by the September 11th attacks, and the Fund would distribute $528 million by 2004. Although 'Tribute to Heroes' was the first fundraiser held, by October 2001, the 'Concert for New York City' would be held at Madison Square Garden with another all-star line-up and raise $35 million for first responders, and on October 21st 'United We Stand: What More Can I Give' concert was headlined by Michael Jackson from Washington D.C. that unfortunately was haunted by technical problems and scheduling issues with performers. Recently I mentioned that 4 years ago, the MTA was facing a string of assaults on workers, and this week the same news appears again. The Transit Workers Union Local 100 reports that assaults on bus and subway workers are up 39% year-over-year, with 85 workers suffering various attacks in the first eight months of 2019. While the MTA and the state have been increasing the law enforcement presence in the subways, transit union president Tony Utano accused the MTA of concealing the increasing assault numbers and not making the statistics public. Earlier this year, the union had also called for greater police enforcement in the subway due to incidents where MTA workers were spit upon. This news of an increase in assaults comes as the transit union is in contract negotiations with the MTA, and workers have been without a contract since May 2019. The MTA is simultaneously trying to address increases in the homeless population within the subway system and a push from Governor Cuomo and MTA head Andy Byford to prosecute fare evasion. This week brought the final sentencing of the student who stabbed two classmates at a Bronx school in 2017. Abel Cedeno was 18 years old at the time and stabbed two younger students with a spring-loaded knife he had purchased from Amazon. One victim survived by was in a coma for several days and of the victims was killed, making the attack the first killing inside a city school in over 20 years. This week, Cedeno received a 14 year prison sentence for manslaughter, 8 years for assault, and 90 days for criminal possession of a weapon, all of which will be served simultaneously. Although the attack was initially explained as an on-going bullying incident, the court documents described the incident that precipitated the attack as a typical school interaction, where one of the victims threw something that hit Cedeno, then claimed that he didn't intend to hit him, but Cedeno challenged the victim to a fight and drew a knife. Further complicating the theory of on-going bullying was testimony given during the trial that the two victims had not had much prior interaction with Cedeno. In an interview with ABC7, Cedeno claimed that he took the knife to school because he felt threatened and that when the attack occurred, he 'just snapped'. In a stunning detail, Cedeno's mother had contacted the school two and a half years before the attack to tell them that he had been taking a knife to school, but administrators failed to take proper action to log the event, instead simply searching his belongings one time and not notifying the school's principal of the mother's concerns. Another terror attack also took place in the city 99 years ago on September 16, 1920 — A horse-drawn wagon bomb explodes outside 23 Wall Street, killing 38 and injuring hundreds — It was an unorthodox way of delivering a bomb, and no one knew the danger that was carried on a horse-drawn wagon as it was pulled along busy Wall Street. In the wagon was 100 pounds of dynamite surrounded by 500 pounds of sash weights, which are heavy cast-iron weights used to counter-balance windows that slide open. The dynamite exploded at noon and sent the heavy shrapnel flying into the lunchtime crowd outside the financial buildings along Wall Street. The attack is still unsolved, but historians believe it was carried out by an Italian anarchist group. The sheer cruelty of the bombing, which seemed to have no intended target and killed a random assortment of innocent people who were nearby, made it difficult to even theorize what the intent of the bombers had been. The federal Bureau of Investigation did find flyers with vague threats stuffed in nearby mailboxes, but they did not directly reference the bombing. It became the worst single loss of life in the city since the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire from nine years earlier in 1911. Today, you can still see damage from the blast at 23 Wall Street, where part of the stone wall has been preserved showing the chips in the stone from the projectiles in the explosion. Just around the corner from the 23 Wall Street bombing, 8 years ago on September 17, 2011 — The Occupy Wall Street movement gathers in the Financial District, eventually settling in a camp at Zuccotti Park — The Occupy Wall Street movement gathers in the Financial District, eventually settling in a camp at Zuccotti Park After planning to camp in either Chase Manhattan Plaza or Bowling Green Plaza, the group lucked out and selected Zuccotti Park, which is designated as a privately-owned public space. The park's status put the protest in kind of a limbo between rules the city could enforce, with police being able to monitor the camp from the sidewalk surrounding it, but otherwise needing to be invited onto the property by Brookfield, the property's owner. The protest camp would last two months until the early morning hours of November 15, when the group was evicted from Zuccotti Park by the city after courts ruled that the protesters did not have a First Amendment right to camp in the park. 168 years ago on September 18, 1851 — The first edition of the New-York Daily Times is published. Six years later, the paper would shorten its name to the New York Times — The paper published six days a week with morning and evening editions and charged one penny for the day's news. A larger, weekly version was printed to be distributed outside the city. Times Square would not be renamed after the paper for another 53 years, so the first offices were downtown at 113 Nassau Street near City Hall Park, then 138 Nassau Street, then 41 Park Row. By 1904, the paper would move to the Times Tower in what was then known as Longacre Square before it was renamed Times Square in honor of the paper. After establishing the Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop from atop their building, the paper would again outgrow the location, expanding and moving some offices westward until completely relocating to their current building on Eighth Avenue. For a bit of local news, that first edition of the New-York Daily Times contained a front page story on the ongoing construction of the fountain in Washington Square Park, which would be completed one year later in 1852. In another attack against the city that gets forgotten in the shadow of 9/11: 18 years ago on September 18, 2001 — One week after the September 11th attacks, letters containing anthrax poison are mailed to four NYC-area newsrooms — The letters appeared to have been mailed from Princeton, NJ and a public mailbox near the Princeton University campus was found to be contaminated with anthrax spores. Letters mailed to Democratic Senators in October 2001 contained a similar threatening note referencing the September 11th attacks. In all, 17 people were sickened and five were killed due to anthrax exposure. Victims included assistants who opened or handled the letters, postal workers who sorted the letters, and a woman from the Bronx whose exposure could never be determined. Although the letters were written to appear as if they were from Muslim extremists, an FBI investigation identified the perpetrator as an American microbiologist, vaccinologist, and senior biodefense researcher at a government facility in Maryland. Bruce Edwards Ivins, a 62-year-old white male, became the focus of the investigation seven years after the incidents, after which he started to show signs of strain and was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital where he went on to suggestively discuss the anthrax letters during therapy sessions. Ivins died by suicide on July 29, 2008 after learning that he had been identified, and the FBI formally closed the case in 2010, identifying Ivins as the sole perpetrator of the letters and detailing how he falsified evidence and attempted to frame co-workers at the governmental research lab to throw investigators off the case. It was back in July when we discussed mosquitoes first testing positive for West Nile virus within the city, and this week, the first human West Nile infections were documented within the city, with one confirmed infection in Brooklyn, two in Queens, and one in Staten Island, although mosquitoes testing positive for the disease have been found in every borough. Now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. Wear clothing that covers your skin, use a mosquito repellent containing the chemical repellents DEET or Picaridin, or use a natural repellent containing oil of lemon eucalyptus. Be sure to seal around your window air conditioners so that mosquitoes won't have an easy entrance into your home, and use window screens if you'll be leaving windows open. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and research which vaccinations you'll need to avoid diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 to report standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. The city may have escaped the effects of the most recent Hurricane Dorian, but 81 years ago on September 21, 1938 — A Category 3 hurricane made landfall on Long Island, becoming one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded to hit New England — A Category 3 hurricane makes landfall on Long Island, becoming one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded to hit New England It became known as the 1938 New England Hurricane and heavily impacted Long Island, although winds were only 60 to 70mph in NYC, with eastern Long Island taking the worst damage. An estimated 682 people were killed, with damages equivalent to $4.7 billion. Brake Fluid Tester - calibrated for DOT 4 brake fluids We also mention our Harley Milwaukee-Eight Oil Change and Routine Maintenance Video. The owner's manual now says to test the brake fluid with a tester. Get the video and save money by not having to take your Harley to a dealership to have a simple oil change and service done.  Understand, that bleeding your Harley brakes and flushing the system is basically the same process. When just bleeding your brakes to get rid of air, you just add fluid to the master cylinder until you get the air out. You are mixing the new fluid with the old.  When you are actually flushing and replacing your brake fluid, you suck the master cylinder dry and then put new fluid in and bleed the brake system until all the old fluid is evacuated, thus having all new fluid in the brake system.  This brake fluid issue is not specific to Harley as all motorcycles use much of the same brake fluid. Harley was just getting ahead of the game and recommending changing it out every two years to avoid any problems. You should do this on your motorcycle regardless of what make.  Check out awesome motorcycle tutorial videos here! Brake fluid is cheap, so if you do this brake flush yourself in your own shop or garage, you'll only spend $6-$10 on the brake fluid. Also, know that brake fluid captures moisture, so don't keep your bottle of brake fluid after you open it on the shelf for future use. Once you open it and use what you need, get rid of the rest. Buy a new bottle the next time.  Here is a good article from Harley-Davidson about the voluntary recall and the need to replace your brake fluid every two years. Don't mind the part where they say to have a certified technician perform the flush.  Harley-Davidson article on changing your brake fluid This is just an overview of the information in this podcast episode. Eggs traditionally symbolize spring and rebirth. There’s a reason for that: As the days get longer, hens tend to produce more eggs. Annemarie Gero, a farmer with Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park, said that each hen can produce as much as one egg a day during peak season. Gero cares for nearly 250 hens at the historic farm, which has been around since 1697. The seven different breeds she oversees includes Rhode Island Reds, which are the farm’s most productive egg layers, and Araucanas, which lay blue-green hued eggs. The colorful eggs are a novelty, but Gero said the color doesn’t affect the taste of the egg at all. “What changes the taste is more what they’re eating,” she explained. “So the chickens that get first to the greens or get first to... the healthy stuff, you’ll have the most nutritious eggs from them.” Gero also notes that while the hens eat garden scraps, as well as munch on grasses and bugs, the hens are not fed strong-tasting greens, like garlic or onion grass, because that can affect the taste of the egg. Since the hens do scavenge, though, it’s wise to test the area where they roam for lead, which can be a particular problem for backyard hens in New York City. “You don’t want the chance of that transferring to your eggs,” said Gero. Certain breeds are tamer and more suited for backyards “because they’re not as frisky,” she said. ”One thing is to look for a less adventurous bird. For example, we have blue Andalusians on the farm, which are the first ones to jump the fence. They’re real mischievous.” Buff Orpingtons are her favorite because they are calm and happy to just walk around. (Photo: Annemarie Gero/Sarah Meyer) Just as each breed has a different personality, Gero added, chickens also vary from individual to individual. “They talk all the time,” she said. “If you go into a chicken coop, you’re hearing probably about 20 conversations going on.... I don’t know how to speak chicken that well, but some people, I think, they say they do.”  As for the eggs themselves, fresh eggs don’t need to be refrigerated because they possess a protective membrane. “Once you wash the egg and remove a type of membrane that’s around it, you do want to refrigerate it,” Gero explained. “Hopefully, the eggs you get in the store are washed.” That’s because the “some of the stuff on the eggs, you wouldn’t want to buy,” she added. The eggs sold by the museum at the farmers market are washed. Washed eggs will stay good in the refrigerator for as long as two months. “Oftentimes, the ones you buy in the grocery store are already a few weeks old,” Gero noted. “One test is to drop them into a glass of water and, if it floats, the egg is bad.” Gero shared an egg recipe for one of her favorite comfort foods: her grandmother’s rakott krumpli, which is a Hungarian casserole of eggs and potatoes. Rakott Krumpli (Hungarian Layered Potatoes & Eggs)By Margaret Magyar Meisels Serves: 4 1kg (2.2 lb.) potatoes, boiled unpeeled 6 hard-boiled eggs; sliced 8 tablespoons butter (100g, 3 oz.) 2 cups sour cream 1 teaspoon salt Butter a casserole dish using half of the butter (approximately 4 tablespoons). Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly to medium. Peel and slice the hard-boiled eggs. Put a layer of sliced potatoes in the dish and sprinkle a little salt over it. Add a layer of sliced eggs, followed by a layer of sour cream. Then cover the sour cream with another layer of sliced potatoes, followed by a layer of eggs and a layer of sour cream. Continue alternating layers of potatoes, eggs and sour cream until you run out of potatoes and eggs. Pour whatever sour cream is left over the last layer of eggs and then spread the remaining butter over the top. Put the dish in a moderate 180°C (350°F) oven and bake until golden brown (approximately 1 hour). Poster's Notes: Butter can definitely be substituted with margarine. The sour cream can also be replaced by leben (Israeli buttermilk with 3% fat) and/or eshel (Israeli buttermilk, unsour, with 4% fat). The original non-kosher Hungarian dish also has sausages. Those of you in the U.S. who have access to (and can digest) pareve smoked "meats" can try adding them.
