-- Ein ALL EARS ON YOU Original Podcast.

Why are so many westerners embarrassed by miracle stories and doubt they still happen? That's the question that our guest Dr. J.P. Moreland is asking today. In his new book-"A Simple Guide to Experience Miracles" J.P. who is a distinguished professor of Philosophy at Talbot Seminary states that many Christians think anyone who talks about miracles is goofy and not living in the real world. Admittedly, there is a lot of "miracle abuse" and crazy claims out there that don't hold up, but as followers of Christ, our Savior told us in John 15:7 "If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you?" Too many Christians are living like practical deists who take human reason over divine intervention and that's dangerous. Dr. Moreland and the Doyles share first hand inspirational miracle stories and you will be challenged to pray for God to move in power in your life!

God is speaking to Muslims all over the Middle East and he's doing it through dreams of Jesus! You may have heard the stories. In a vision, Jesus appears in a robe of blazing white. The dreamer is filled with a deep sense of love and is drawn to follow him. Missiologists tell us that between 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 Muslims have become Christians because of a dream. The Spirit is at work drawing people to himself and it's all happening while they are sleeping! In today's podcast, we have two special guests all the way from Texas, USA. Tom and JoAnn Doyle have been reaching out to the people of the Middle East for 20 years. Their ministry inspires the church to share the good news with Jews and Muslims in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Syria and the Palestinian territories of Israel. On the show, you will hear some of the incredible stories coming of the Middle East. Many of them are hard to believe! Tom and JoAnn tell of how a dream of Jesus often marks the beginning of a journey for Muslims to discover more about the man they call Issa. For Muslims, Jesus is an important prophet, but not the Son of God. They also believe the Bible has been corrupted. But when they experience the love of Jesus for themselves, these arguments are instantly dashed and they become motivated to find out more. One woman had been having dreams of Jesus for 30 years and was waiting for someone to tell her what they mean. She finally received answers when she met Tom at a petrol station and prayed a prayer of submission to Jesus. Another woman said “I have never felt so safe with a man in my life as I have in dreams of Jesus. He loved me like a father.” This episode will not only inspire you to worship the God who is constantly reaching out to people, but to become like him in connecting with Muslims in your own neighbourhood. A great way to start the conversation is, “Have you ever had a dream of Jesus?"! Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! About Tom and JoAnn Doyle Tom Doyle fell in love with the Middle East on his first Bible tour of the Holy Land.  In 1995 he became an official tour guide for the state of Israel and developed a passion for ministering to the Israeli people, Arabs and Jews alike. He and his wife, JoAnn, felt a call from God to full-time ministry there in 2001. In 2017, the Doyles launched Uncharted Ministries, which seeks to inspire the church to reach Jews and Muslims in the Middle East and uncharted territories around the world.  They serve in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Syria and Palestinian territories of Israel and often lead groups to the Middle East through their Lands of the Bible tours. Tom is a master storyteller with several books highlighting God's miraculous work among the Muslim people. His best-known books are Dreams and Visions, Killing Christians and Standing in the Fire. About JoAnn: JoAnn Doyle and her husband, Tom, have been married for 38 years and have six children and seven grandchildren. JoAnn was a pastor's wife for 20 years before God called the Doyle's into full-time work in the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa in 2001. What surprised JoAnn most of all is that soon after she began her work in the region, God birthed in her a heart for the women of the Middle East, especially Muslim women. “I was not in the least attracted to them and their needs, but soon God broke my heart for them. I was truly able to see them through our Father's eyes.” This led JoAnn to launch a ministry for Women in the Middle East named Not Forgotten. The team has ministered in Israel, Egypt, Gaza, The West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, Afghanistan, India, Korea, and right here in the United States. The ministry reaches out to all women of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia but, specifically, is called to reach Muslim women with the love of Christ. JoAnn and the Not Forgotten team are highly sought after to train women in North America and around the world to engage Muslim women around them with the love and Good News of Jesus. JoAnn leads expeditions for women overseas and speaks in many churches throughout North America. Her goal is to inspire women to have a heart for Muslim women and to be Jesus to them. In 2017, God called JoAnn and Tom to launch Uncharted Ministries which calls believers to join God's great harvest field among Jews and Muslims. JoAnn is also a regular guest on various national radio programs such as the Moody Radio Network with Chris Fabry, and Charles Dyer. She also co-wrote Breakthrough – The Return of Hope to the Middle East with Tom. Worship and prayer is the heart of JoAnn's life, along with a deep love for her family. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/angel-h-davis/message

Some of the most famous minds of the 19th century became swept up in the allure of Spiritualism and mediumship. No less among these had been Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who became one of the staunchest defenders of Spiritualism, even authoring a two-volume history of the religion. However, his friend Harry Houdini, while initially open to the possibility of mediumship as an avenue toward making contact with those who had crossed over, soon became convinced that it was a sham. In addition to placing strains on his friendship with Doyle, the experience pushed Houdini toward the pursuit of exposing all mediumship and paranormal claims as nonsense.  However, following Houdini's death on Halloween in 1926, even the world's greatest magician would become the target of attempts with reaching the dead through seances and mediumship. On this special Halloween edition of the program, we explore Houdini and Doyles relationship with the occult, and how even in death they each remained highly influential on the world of the occult. Have you heard of the Little Free Library that some thoughtful people put up out by their sidewalks?    Well, a few weeks ago, I saw a post by Hylton Jolliffe about his Little Free Herbary...   Takes obvious inspiration from the little free library movement and it aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking medicinal remedies fragrances etc.   The idea takes obvious inspiration from the wonderful Little Free Library movement and it aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking, medicinal remedies, fragrances, etc.    Anyway, I loved Hylton's idea; I think it's just as cute as all get out.   Hylton also has a Facebook groupthat you can go to to find out more information. Just search for "Little Free Herbary the next time your in Facebook.        Brevities       #OTD  It was on this day, in 1812, the botanist Karl Theodor Hartweg was born.   He'd started out in Paris, working for the botanical garden there, and then ended up going to the Chiswick garden in London. He was eager to travel and go on expeditions. He was sent to the Americas for the first time in 1836.   He was supposed to be there for a three year project, but you know how plans go astray...   He ended up being there're seven years.   During Hartweg's time, native plants from Mexico, like dahlias and cacti, were all the rage.   Hartweg's particular specialty was orchids. According to Merle Reinkka, the author of A History of the Orchid, Hartweg collected,   "The most variable and comprehensive collection of New World Orchids made by a single individual in the first half of the [19th] century."     During his time in America, Vera Cruz (Mexico) became something of a mecca for Plant Explorers. Hartweg  once commented ,   “All the way from London just to look after weeds.”         #OTD  It's the anniversary of the 1969 death of Edgar Shannon Anderson.    Anderson was an American botanist and his 1949 book Introgressive Hybridizationwas a major step forward in botanical genetics.   While he was at Harvard, Anderson went on to work at the Bussey Institute; a biological arm of the University.   It was there that he met Dorothy Moore, a fellow botanist.  Dorothy was always by his side; going on hikes and collecting plant specimens. They were married in 1923.   Anderson became the director of the Missouri Botanical Garden. After three years of administrative work, he went back to his passions of teaching and research.   In 1952, Anderson published Plants, Man and Life.   In the book, Anderson shared his methods of research and his perspective on life. It is a favorite among botanists. It contains not only scientific knowledge, but also folklore, some of Anderson's insight on early herbalists, and a little bit of philosophy.   There's a charming account of Leonard Fuchs, a German physician and botanist.   When Anderson wrote about him, he said, "He was a big, broad-shouldered Henry VIII sort of man; with handsome clothes and a general air of getting things done."       #OTD  It's the one-year anniversary of the death of the beloved botanist Professor Holenarasipur Yoganarasimham Mohan Ram (H.Y. Mohan Ram).   Mohan Ram Left a tremendous legacy of the faculty and students of the botany department at Delhi University.   He had Published over 240 research research papers get guided 32 PhD students and his research included studies in floral biology, plant physiology, insectivorous plants and the river weed family.   In one of his autobiographies Mohan Ram said,   "I wish I could be like a tree; deep rooted and firmly fixed, bearing a lofty bole and a broad canopy, continuously absorbing, synthesizing and renewing, bearing fragrant flowers and delicious fruits, unmindful of stresses and insults, resilient to changes and perpetually giving and not coveting. To this I must add tenacity, based on the remarkable example of a gingko tree, almost at the epicenter of the 1945 Hiroshima nuclear explosion, that sprouted from the root after its trunk had been completely demolished along with everything around it.”         #OTD    This month, the English gardening expert, Carol Klein, is hosting a brand-new television program called Great British Gardens.   Carol's program has four parts and it explores four of the country's most distinctive gardens. Today's episode features Gravetye Manor at 9 PM. The gardens at Gravetye Manor were created by William Robinson; One of England's most distinguished gardeners.       Unearthed Words   Here are some thoughts on June from Vita Sackville-West:   "It always seemed to me that the herbaceous peony is the very epitome of June.  Larger than any rose, it has something of the cabbage rose's voluminous quality; and when it finally drops from the vase, it sheds its petticoats with a bump on the table, all in an intact heap, much as a rose will suddenly fall, making us look up from our book or conversation, to notice for one moment the death of what had still appeared to be a living beauty."         Today's book recommendation: The Names of Plants by David Gledhill   This book is a fantastic reference for gardeners. The first section botanical history. The second section shares a glossary of generic and specific plant names, along with detailed explanations of Botanical Nomenclature.       Today's Garden Chore   Plant some Doyle's Thornless Blackberry.   'Doyle's Thornless Blackberry' produces 10 to 20 gallons of berries per plant per year. (That's 10 times a normal bush.)       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart     It was on this day 1968, that the Rolling Stones had No.1 single: Jumpin Jack Flash.   Keith Richards said that he & Jagger wrote it after staying at Richards' house.   They were awakened one morning by the gardener.   Jagger asked what the noise?   Richards said, "that's jumpin' Jack."         Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Here's a gardener's bedtime ritual for this time of year: Take sandpaper or a nail file and nick those nasturtium seeds before you soak them overnight; then sow them outside. They grow well in poor soil. The leaves and flowers are edible and are great in salads.   Brevities   #OTD It's the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - born in 1859.   Ten years ago, in 2009, aviolin made from a dying sycamore tree in Conan Doyle's garden was played to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth. The violin was a nod to Conan Doyle's creation, Sherlock Holmes, who played the violin while solving cases. If you search for "Conan Doyle Garden" on twitter, you'll see a fantastic photographic portrait of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle sitting at a table in his garden with his Irish terrier Paddy sitting beside him on a bench. Doyle and his wife, Jean, purchased a quaint, thatched cottage they called Bignell House. Running along the boundary of the garden was a trout stream and it also had a wicket gate leading directly to the forest. There was a miniature golf course and a croquet lawn. Jean added a number of garden gnomes and statuary to the garden. The Doyles were spiritualists. They believed in garden fairies, pixies, and elves. During the First World War, when two girls took created fake photographs of fairies, Doyle fell for the pictures. They inspired him to write The Coming of the Fairies a book making the case for the existence of fairies. The garden influenced Doyle's writing. He wrote about monkshood and other poisonous plants. When he has his character John Watson write a list of Sherlock Holmes limitations; Watson mentions he knew nothing of practical gardening however, he did note that Sherlock was, "Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally." In The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, Sherlock Holmes solves the case thanks to footprints in the garden. In Doyle's Through the Magic Door,he wrote about the value of understanding botany: "A very little botany will enable you to recognize every flower you are likely to meet in your walks abroad, and to give you a tiny thrill of interest when you chance upon one which is beyond your ken. In an interview with Doyle published in The Strand Magazine in march 1919, he shares his understanding of an odd message that had come to him during a séance. It said, "Food comes before etymology." He said, "On the day before that on which I attended this seance, I had told my two little boys, aged nine and seven (these are children of Sir Arthur's second marriage) that they must go to work and kill all the caterpillars and other predatory insects in our garden. They were not inclined to do it, for they are very tender-hearted little fellows, but I explained to them that these insects were just as much a menace to our food supply as the German submarines then were. They understood the necessity then, and started at once. So now you can see the significance of the message that I received : 'Food comes before entomology,' " Aside from his belief in the supernatural, Doyle greatly enjoyed being in his garden. He did most of his writing in the garden. He once remarked, "What a lovely thing a rose is!" And, Doyle once gave a speech heartily supporting the Early Rising Billor Daylight SavingBillwhich was published in the Daily Mailon April 21, 1909, where he stated:  "Of every 100 people in the country ninety-nine would benefit by its passing. The only real objection is that it would set all the sundials wrong. (Laughter.) The need of this age is that people should get more in touch with nature; that they should have a little more fun in their lives; and I think that a measure which sends a man home one hour earlier to his wife and children, gives him a chance to cultivate his garden... would be of great benefit to the country."       #OTD It was on this day in 1978 that the botanist Florence Meier Chase died. Meier studied the relationship between sunlight and algae at the Radiation Biology Laboratory (RBL), a part of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO).  Meier, and her fellow botanists, used rooms in the tower and basement of the Smithsonian Castle for their research. "In the early days, scientists traveled between floors of the tower by climbing up and down a ladder through a trapdoor, often carrying trays of specimens or scientific equipment. In 1929, a very small elevator was installed in the tower to make the trip safer and easier."   In 1937, on Valentine's Day, Meier was giving people a tour around the Smithsonian Castle. She was demonstrating the how she and her group used the ladders and trapdoors to get around. As tour wrapped up, Meier let the group take take elevator down as there wasn't enough room for her.  As the elevator door closed, Meier waved goodbye, stepped backwards, forgot that the trap door was left open, and fell through to the floor below, breaking her back. While she was recovering at Garfield Memorial Hospital, her doctor was Dr. William Wiley Chase, the head of the surgery department. They married in 1939.       Unearthed Words  Today in 1885, Victor Hugo died; the author of the Hunchback of Notre-Dame as well as Les Miserables.  A gardener, Hugo had many wonderful garden-inspired quotes: "Life is the flower for which love is the honey."  "Sorrow is a fruit. God does not make it grow on limbs too weak to bear it." “A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in--what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.” "How did it happen that their lips came together? How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts, that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapes of trees on the quivering summit of the hill? A kiss, and all was said."   Today's book recommendation: Gardentopia by Jan Johnsen If you are looking to refresh your garden, or simply looking for Inspiration, Jan Johnsen’s new book, Gardentopia: Design Basics for Creating Beautiful Outdoor Spaces,is the perfect choice. Jan's a fabulous designer and a popular speaker. She was featured on The Still Growing Gardening Podcast in Episode 588 and Jan is such a delight. She's a pragmatist, highly intuitive, and she's known for her positive and collaborative approach to “co-creating with nature." In her book, solutions are divided into five categories: Garden Design and Artful Accents" , Walls, Patios, Walks and Steps, Theme Gardens, Color in the Garden and Plants and Planting. There's plenty to inspire gardeners - the cover is spectacular, the advice is fantastic - this should be on your wish list and on your go-to gardener gift list for 2019 and beyond.     Today's Garden Chore Incorporate more living mulch - ground covers - into your garden.    Take a second to chat with any experienced gardener, and they will tell you that they value ground covers more with each passing year. Dependable and hardworking, these plants solve many landscape problems.   Vita Sackville West was one of the first people to use the term "living mulch". She said,  "But, I added, in my reply to my correspondent, why restrict your rosebeds to a mere edging? Why not allow plants to encroach all over the beds? It will do the roses no harm; in fact, it will supply a living mulchto keep the ground moist and the roses cool at the root."       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   In researching Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I learned that the Spring before he died, Conan Doyle was bedridden. However, one morning, unattended, he got up and managed to go out to the garden. His family found him lying on the ground with one hand clutching his heart and the other holding a single white snowdrop. He languished until July 7, 1930, when he passed away with his family at his bedside. His last words were to his wife. He whispered, "You are wonderful."  Newspaper accounts shared that, on a beautiful summer day, he was buried in the garden where he had been so much at home - beside his garden hut, which was erected for him as a writing room. Over 200 people attended the funeral. So many wreaths were sent from all over the world that they were spread over the large paddock west of the home; covering an acre of land with blooms. When Conan Doyle's coffin had been placed in the grave, "Lady Doyle kissed a rose and threw it in." Lady Jean Conan Doyle continued to live at Windlesham until her death on 27th June 1940, she was buried next to Sir Arthur.     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Churchview, number 34 on the Main Street of Chapelizod, is a detached three-story Georgian building that lies sandwiched between two lanes leading to St. Laurence’s Church. The building is commonly known as the House by the Church Yard and has long been associated with the name of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, the Irish writer of supernatural, Gothic and mystery fiction. The village and its history made a strong impression on Le Fanu’s imagination, and the characters and stories he grew up with re-appear in several of his works. In these, Le Fanu likes to look back at the heyday of the village in the middle of the 18th century, when a bustling social life revolved around the officers of the Royal Irish Horse Artillery. Le Fanu spent his childhood in Chapelizod, while his father worked as chaplain in the Hibernian Military School. The Hibernian Military School was built to educate the children of the 400 soldiers of the Royal Irish Horse Artillery, garrisoned in the area.Built around 1740, the sadly dilapidated building of Churchview is one of the earliest surviving structures in the village. It is believed by many to be the house which gives its name to Le Fanu’s 1868 novel ‘The House by the Churchyard’, a work in which Le Fanu combined a lively portrayal of life in Chapelizod in the 1760s with a macabre tale of deceit, murder and retribution. The story opens with the annual festivities held on nearby Palmerstown Green, where we are introduced to some of the residents of Chapelizod. These include General Chattesworth and his eligible daughter Gertrude, the local rector Doctor Walsingham and his ill-fated daughter Lilias, and some of the more colourful officers of the regiment, including Lieutenant Puddock and Gunner ‘Fireworks’ O’Flaherty. Courtships, rivalries and duels - all treated with a strong element of farce - provide much of the plot in the first half of the novel, until the arrival in the village of a mysterious stranger by the name of Mr Mervyn sets in train a sequence of sinister events, culminating in the attempted murder of Doctor Sturk in the Phoenix Park by an unknown assailant. Sturk’s body is carried back to his house (perhaps the very building that stands on Main Street today), where he lies in a coma until the key to the mystery is at last revealed when he is briefly brought to his senses by being trepanned, the desperate operation carried out by a whiskey-soaked Dublin doctor known as ‘Black Dillon’, who arrives by coach at dead of night.Although less well known than Bram Stoker or Edgar Allan Poe, Sheridan Le Fanu has always been regarded as a key figure in the development of Gothic and mystery fiction. His vampire novel ‘Carmilla’ influenced Stoker’s creation of ‘Dracula’, and many writers of ghost stories have paid tribute to his subtle ability to make the flesh creep. The English writer E.F. Benson said of him: “No one else has so sure a touch in mixing the mysterious atmosphere in which horror darkly breeds.”Le Fanu’s novel ‘The House by the Churchyard’ was also admired by James Joyce, who – like Le Fanu – knew Chapelizod in his youth and who wove elements of Le Fanu’s story into his own ‘Finnegan’s Wake’.During the second half of the 18th century, the appearance of Dublin city transformed as buildings like the Customs House, Trinity College, and the Four Courts were constructed. Other building works were undertaken to improve the streetscapes of the inner city, and magnificent Georgian mansions were constructed for the city’s elite. However, following the Act of Union in 1801 – through which the Irish parliament in Dublin was removed and united with British parliament in London – there was a marked reduction in the property prices in the city. Many of the old Georgian houses were converted into tenements, each containing multiple large families renting individual rooms in the building. These inner-city tenements became notorious for their squalor, and the neighbourhoods surrounding them gained a reputation as slums. It was in this context that Churchview was converted into tenement style housing. Little is known of the history of the house during this period of its existence, apart from that a David Cant is recorded as living there in 1914, when the rated value of the premises was £13.Like many tenement buildings in Dublin during the 20th century, the building accommodated a staggering number of people. The Irwins and their eight children lived on the first floor, the Farrells, with four children, lived on the second floor, and the Doyles with two children lived on the top floor. A bachelor Mr Flaherty had the basement all to himself. There are also reports of a local boxing club situated in the basement at some stage during the buildings life. The Irwin’s were the biggest and last family to have lived in the house. Frances Martin Irwin herself, the mother of the family, was raised in Chapelizod and was one of the lucky children who attended the Hibernian Military School, where Sheridan Le Fanu’s father was Chaplin years before her time.Although it was not as squalid as some of the tenements of the inner city, it was certainly overcrowded, and at a young age Angela and Mary Irwin had to move out of their childhood home into Martin’s Row. The rest of the children followed suit – Monica and Tony Irwin moving to the nearby Mulberry Cottages – as did the building’s other tenants, until Frances was the only person left behind. Of Frances’ eight children, half remained close by in Chapelizod, and she lived in Churchview until her death in 1968. She is buried in the Hibernian Military School in the Phoenix Park. The descendants of the Irwin family still live in both the Mulberry Cottages and in Martin’s row, continuing their link with Chapelizod. In the years following her death the building remained unoccupied, and today the house by the churchyard stands apparently forgotten, in a state of dangerous neglect – waiting for a skilful and sensitive hand to resurrect it from its death-like slumber.Further Reading:Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1851) Ghost Stories of Chapelizod.
