Big news for mobile: as of today, Firefox for Android users in Europe will find an entirely redesigned interface and a fast and secure mobile browser that was overhauled down to the core. Users in North America will receive the update on August 27. Like their previous release “Firefox Quantum” desktop browser revamp, they are naming this release “Firefox Daylight” as it marks a new beginning for the Android browser. Included with this new mobile experience are lots of innovative features, an improved user experience with new customization options, and some massive changes under the hood. New Firefox features Android users will love Privacy & security This product offers Enhanced Tracking Protection, providing a better web experience. The revamped browsing app comes with our highest privacy protections ever – on by default. ETP keeps numerous ad trackers at bay and out of the users’ business, set to “Standard” mode right out of the box to put their needs first. Stricter protections are available to users who want to customize their privacy settings. Additionally, they took the best parts of Firefox Focus, according to its users, and applied them to Private Mode: Now, Private Mode is easily accessible from the Android home screen and users have the option to create a private browsing shortcut on their Android home screen, which will launch the browsing app automatically in the respective mode and allow users to browse privately on-the-go. Appearance & productivity With regard to appearance, the user interface has been redesigned of their Android browser completely so that it’s now even clearer, easier to handle and to make it one’s own: Users can set the URL bar at the bottom or top of the screen, improving the accessibility of the most important browser element especially for those with smartphones on the larger side. Taking forever to enter a URL is therefore now a thing of the past, and so are chaotic bookmarks: Collections help to stay organized online, making it easy to return to frequent tasks, share across devices, personalize one’s browsing experience, and get more done on mobile. As a working parent, for example, Collections may come in handy when organizing and curating one’s online searches based on type of activity such as kids, work, recipes, and many more. Multitaskers, who want to get more done while watching videos, will also enjoy the new Picture-in-Picture feature. Bright or dark, day or night: Firefox for Android simplifies toggling between Light and Dark Themes, depending on individual preferences, vision needs, or environment. Those who prefer an automatic switch may also set Firefox to follow the Android setting so that the browsing app will switch automatically to dark mode at a certain time of day. Last but not least, we revamped the extensions experience. We know that add-ons play an important role for many Firefox users and we want to make sure to offer them the best possible experience when starting to use our newest Android browsing app. We’re kicking it off with the top 10 add-ons for enhanced privacy and user experience from our Recommended Extensions program. At the same time, we’re continuously working on offering more add-on choices in the future that will seamlessly fit into Firefox for Android. What’s new under the hood The improvements in Firefox for Android don’t just stop here: they even go way beyond the surface as Firefox for Android is now based on GeckoView, Mozilla’s own mobile browser engine. What does that mean for users? It’s faster. The technology we used in the past limited our capability to further improve the browser as well as our options to implement new features. Now, we’re free to decide and our release cycle is flexible. Also, GeckoView makes browsing in Firefox for Android significantly speedier. It’s independent. Unlike Edge, Brave, and Chrome, Firefox for Android is not based on Blink (Google’s mobile engine). Instead, ...

Welcome to our second episode of the Ebu Access Cast. Our hosts Mario Percinic and Jakob Rosin prepared a bunch of news from the assistive tech industry, and at the end of the Podcast, you will be able to hear a short demonstration about Google Home. But first let’s check what news do we have for you this time:   Microsoft launched new version of Windows 10 for all members of their Windows Insiders program, and the version is called Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17692.  Except many new improvements for all users, a few accessibility related topics are covered as well. Ease of Access has a new feature for partially sighted users so that all the content can be bigger; Narrator has a new list of keyboard layout, which you can find here: Besides new keyboard layout Narrator now supports Automatic Dialog Reading: Narrator will now automatically read the contents of a dialog box when brought to the foreground.  The experience is for Narrator to speak the title of the dialog, the focused element within the dialog and the static text, if any, at the top of the dialog. For example, if you try to close a document in Word with unsaved changes, Narrator will speak the title “Microsoft Word,” the focus “Save button” and the static text within the dialog. Narrator Find: You now have the ability to search for text using Narrator’s new Find feature. If the text is found Narrator will move to the found item. Please refer to the accompanying keyboard layout documentation for command mapping. List of Objects: Narrator now has the ability to present a list of links, headings or landmarks present in the application or content. You are also able to filter the results by typing in the list or the text field of the window. Please refer to the accompanying keyboard layout documentation for command mapping. Selection in Scan Mode: Along with being able to select content in Narrator’s scan mode using Shift-selection commands, you can now also select a block of data by first moving to one end of the block and pressing F9, moving to the other end of the block and pressing F10. Once F10 is pressed, the entire contents between the two points will be selected. Stop on Controls in Scan Mode: Scan mode is a feature of Narrator that lets you use just a few keys to move around your screen. Scan mode is already on by default in Edge and you can toggle it on and off by pressing Caps lock + Spacebar. While you’re in scan mode, you can press the Up and Down arrow keys to read different parts of the page. With this update, the press of a Down arrow in Scan Mode will stop on interactive elements, so that they are easier to use. An example of this new behavior is that if you are reading a paragraph with multiple links, Narrator will stop on these links when you press the Down arrow.   New Accessibility Features Coming to iPhone, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Watch To check out all the accessibility related news for the upcoming Apple OS releases follow the link above. Jakob gave us a short review about Aira, a new system which helps blind people to navigate around by using a special glasses or a smartphone with the guidance and the assistance from professional agents. NVDA a very popular free screen reader has a new version for this year called 2018.2, and the list of improvements can be found here. New version of JAWS was also launched during May and besides many improvements in the May update the biggest one is the support for Firefox 60, also called Firefox Quantum, which is finally working, again, after all of the blind users had a huge problems with Firefox performance at the end of 2017. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 finally saw the day of its official release.   WCAG 2.1 was initiated with the goal to improve accessibility guidance for three major groups: users with cognitive or learning disabilities, users with low vision, and users with disabilities on mobile devices. To check out all the features listed visit the link on the W3C website. Those of you who had enough patience to stay and listen to us until the end can enjoy in the demonstration from Jakob about google home. As always, you are free to contact us thru multiple channels including our email and Twitter, and we are looking forward to bring you new stuff during the upcoming summer.

Panel: Charles Max Wood Dave Kimura Eric Berry David Richards In this episode, the Ruby Rogues panel discuss Strings and Encodings in Ruby with Aaron Lasseigne. Aaron has been a Ruby developer for over a decade and is the author of Mastering Ruby: Strings and Encodings. Also, Aaron talks about his recent work on a service object Gem called Active Interaction. This is a great episode on learning about Strings and Encodings. In particular, we dive pretty deep on:  Discussion Points (contributed by guests and hosts): •Why is it so important to understand strings? ◦“The internet is powered by multimillion-dollar string manipulation machines. We put strings in a box, and get new strings out. While there’s plenty of mathy things that can happen in the middle, there is no denying the importance of strings in today’s world.” - Schneems ◦They’re the only data structure that lies to you. You can see the exact contents of an array or hash but strings mask what’s happening. That’s why you can get situations when a single character has a length of 2. •What are character sets? ◦A character set defines a group of characters, their order, and it assigns each an identifier (a code point). ▪Unicode is a character set. ◦What are code points? ▪Unique identifiers within the character set. ◦UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32 are implementations of the Unicode character set ▪Each has its own benefits •Normalization forms ◦Different representations of the same character. We can represent “é” as a single character or as an “e” and a combining mark (2 characters). Normalization forms allow us to change between forms. ◦There are 4 forms, NFC, NFD, NFKC, and NFKD and they all do slightly different things. ▪They can be switched between with `String#unicode_normalize`. •Sorting ◦Easy for English only but can be quite difficult with other languages. Sorting “e” and “é” can be tricky. •Security ◦Identical characters, similar characters, and invisible characters can all be used to spoof user names. ▪https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/how-to-avoid-downloading-a-fake-app_us_5a147d40e4b0f401dfa7eafb ▪https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/7ahujw/psa_two_different_developers_under_the_same_name/ •The current state of Unicode support in Ruby. It was improved in 2.4 when methods like `upcase` started working with Unicode characters. •The addition of grapheme support in Ruby 2.5. •Freezing strings with `String#freeze` and with the special comment at the top of a file. ◦Immutable strings may still make it into Ruby 3 as the default. •Character set expressions (a term I made up) for use with methods like `String#count` and `String#delete`. ◦They’re like the inside of a regular expression character set (e.g. `[a-z]`) •Tofu and mojibake ◦Tofu are those white boxes you see when a character doesn’t exist on your computer. ◦Mojibake is when the characters show up but they don’t make sense because you’re using the wrong encoding or they were misencoded somewhere along the way. •Fixing bad characters ◦Strings can be checked with `valid_encoding?`. ◦`String#scrub` lets you replace invalid bytes with a single character which is the replacement character by default (that black diamond with a question mark in it). ◦`String#encode` also does replacement work and will let you swap out characters if you go from something like UTF-8 to ASCII. ▪You can even change out newline types with it. ◦`Encoding::Converter` is an even more powerful way to convert but it’s a tool for when things go seriously wrong. It's been years since I gave a second thought to my web browser. Safari's fine, Microsoft Edge is whatever, I think Opera still exists? None have ever offered much reason to switch away from Chrome, Google's fast, simple web tool. I'm not the only one who feels this way, either: Chrome commands nearly 60 percent of the browser market, and is more than four times as popular as the second-place finisher, Firefox. Chrome won the browser wars.

Apple Clips. Tesla Model 3.

Host : Marv Dorner, BeBizzy Consulting On Episode 59 of the BeBizzy Break Podcast, we talk about the passing of another geriatric internet property, Compuserve, a renewal of the browser wars with Firefox Quantum, and why your technology is good enough. Tech News Compuserve Forums Joins Microsoft Paint and AIM as old tech services being shut down in 2017. Compuserve was the first major online service provider before AOL took over The Forums were the last service of the once-proud ISP to remain functional The service will be terminated on December 15, 2017 and odds are if no one would have said anything, you never would have known.  Firefox QuantumNew browser from Mozilla that promises to be faster, and use less memory. Some extensions may not work, so beware Your current tech is good enough FOMO - Fear of Missing Out There's always a faster, shinier, and more "feature rich" device And while there's something to be gained with tech that works better and faster, your current technology might be already good enough, or could be made so with a few minor tweaks or upgrades. Smartphones There's really no big leaps forward in phone features Sure there's cosmetic upgrades like smaller bezels, larger and brighter screens, somewhat better battery Most smartphone issues can be solved by doing a few easy thingsReplacing the battery, if possible, or carry an external battery or recharging device. Clear up memory by deleting apps, using streaming audio and video services, and uploading photos to free cloud services like Google Photos, them deleting the local files. Run Updates - Make sure you're running the most recent operating system and app updates. Having everything updated makes it easier to troubleshoot and work together. Factory Reset - Things still running slow? Sometimes it's just best to flush the system and start over with a new operating system install. Keep in mind you will lost all of your data on the phone, so back up and connect to cloud services. Computers Talk about no huge leaps forward, computers have remained pretty constant for many years Improvements like the Microsoft Surface, Chromebooks and even iPad Pros are blurring the lines between computers and mobile, but even they "promise" to be able to do what you can already do with a computer, just smaller and lighter. Both "major" operating systems, Windows and iOS have promised no major upgrades anymore, just incremental updates. Hard Drives have become so large it's hard for a vast majority of users to come close to filling it up. You can increase the life of your computer by doing some very easy, cost effective things like :Add RAM - Memory is cheap, and of all the things to replace requires the least amount of technical know-how and time. RAM is easily accessible in desktops by removing the case, and most laptops have a cover to remove to get at the RAM and maybe the HDD. Major products like Crucial have scanners and selectors to make sure you're getting the right memory to upgrade your device. HDD - Have an old or small hard drive? There's a real good chance that your HDD is a spinning disc, and believe it or not, it's WHEN it will fail, not IF. Check out Seagate or Western Digital to find a suitable replacement. You can also migrate less often or large files to an external drive for a small price and they easily connect to your current computer via USB. To the Cloud! - Get your photos and other important files uploaded to a cloud service like Dropbox to ensure ease of access & transfer, and also security in the event of a hardware failure or catastrophic office event. Websites I know, it seems weird that a web development company would tell you that your website is good enough. There ARE times when it's best to update the website like when you need : Responsive Design - Have a site that is old and doesn't work on a smartphone or smaller screen? Might be time to update to a responsive website. CMS like WordPress - Maybe it's time to take over the management of your own website. WordPress allows you to post your own pages, a blog, and more. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Maybe you're site is all set up an running as you need, but you're just not getting found on the internet. By optimizing your SEO and your Local Business Listing you increase the chances of being found by potential customers. Social Media Marketing & Training  - Like SEO, your website might not be the problem, maybe it's just getting the word out. Social Media offers an easy way to engage your fans and followers and market to new clients. Other Items We are constantly hit with marketing messages on stuff you "NEED" to ensure you have the most current technology or your life will be horrible. Vehicle enhancements like rear hatches that open with your foot, lane change chimes, and others are safety features, but really just being a better driver will fix that. 4K and 3D TV's are wonderful, but there is little programming that takes advantage of the technology. VR goggles are fun toys, but again, there's very little cool, productive programming for them. And voice controlled devices like Google Home or Alexa are neat, and have a utility to them, but often you have a device in your hands or pocket that can do the same thing.   I LOVE technology, and our economy relies on constant updating of computers, furniture, cars, homes and just about everything else. But sometimes saving that money for something else is your best bet.
