Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. Check my socials @jasonmbryant for some knowledge bombs. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. Evergreen's women also picked up a W, beating Grays Harbor 34-8. Shout outs to our latest Mat Talk patrons, Warrior Coach and KBnoswag. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. Gasworks Park in Seattle is a great park for a lot of people. It's also a historic Coast Salish fishing site, and the first stop on this audio tour that immerses us in the stories and languages of the Salish Sea area. What does it mean to live in a place for thousands of thousands of years? Did you know that there are geoduck clams older than Washington State? Indigenous Coast Salish peoples continue to steward this land and preserve its language, despite settler colonialism, industrialization and gentrification. Listen to connect to the Salish Sea area, as a step towards creating healthier human relationships with this changing ecosystem. “As young as I can remember, it has been the beach and the water that my existence has been drawn to.” “Treaties are guaranteed by the Constitution, yet they are broken every day by environmental degradation.” “I think I can feel where water is. I use it to orient myself. Once I feel where is water, I can then figure out where I am.”“It's such a soft feeling.”“You know the history of the Ship Canal, don't you?”“The river and salt water have been important to our people since the beginning of time.” Part story, part sound collage, this piece is scored entirely with the sounds of the waters and animals who live in and around the Salish Sea. We're so excited to be returning to our Foods by State series! These are always some of our favorites and this fourth installment was no exception. River was fighting back laughter when he discovered the main ingredient in Terran's Food by State spin. What do you think? Are you up for a little (or not so little!) Geoduck? A Foods by State Reminder This episode is the fourth in a series called Foods by State. This is based on a list of crazy, unusual, or historic foods that have become associated with the states of our nation. Each state on the wheel comes with an assigned food that must be recreated by the spinner. River was the first to take the wheel and was awarded Wyoming's Chuckwagon Breakfast. Terran spun next to discover that he would be working with his very own state's unusual ingredient – Geoduck. Washington's Geoduck Chowder Ingredients 4 pieces bacon, par-cooked and diced (keep the rendered fat) 1 cup clam juice ½ cup poached leeks – whites and greens 2 tablespoons minced shallots 4 cups + 2 cups cream ½ cup sour cream (optional) 1/2 cup sour cream One geoduck clam, cleaned and diced (see video for instructions) ½ cup potatoes diced and cooked ¼ cup chives, minced Salt and pepper to taste· Directions Preheat your broiler In a large pot, heat the bacon fat and use it to sauté the shallots. Add the bacon and clam juice, cook until it is reduced by half Add in 4 cups of cream, while continually stirring. Continue to cook until reduced by half again. Add in chopped geoduck clam, potatoes, leeks, chives, and 2 cups cream. We also opted to add sour cream. Add salt and pepper, to taste. Continue stirring while bringing the chowder to a boil. Place chowder under the broiler until golden brown. Washington's Geoduck Chowder Ingredients Sausage of your choosing (approximately one pound) 1 pound hashbrowns 6 eggs, scrambled ½ to 1½ cups shredded cheese Directions Lightly oil frying pan and place on medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook until browned Add hashbrowns and cook, stirring consistently, until well browned Lower heat to medium and add scrambled eggs, stirring over heat until eggs are fluffy and cooked through. Add cheese and stir until cheese is melted. Serve and enjoy! Are you going to try one of these recipes? Does your state have an interesting food? Let us know! Geoduck? More like geoyuck! (or geoyum ;) ) This abomination is the subject of many exasperated sighs, intermittent revulsion, and general body horror. Come learn about it, won't you? We answer your questions like: Where the heck is this thing located so we can avoid it? Why on earth are people eating it and even more importantly why is it crunchy?? How is this a clam and how has the rest of Class Bivalvia not kicked it to the curb? What is broadcast spawning? And is this the by product of a geodude and golduck sin? Mukbang if you dare.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
What's in a mascot name? Maybe you're a fan of the Banana Slugs, or you cheer for the Winged Beavers. Perhaps your loyalty lies with the Fighting Artichokes. There are some strange names for sports team out there. But what's even stranger is the origin of the word "mascot" itself. It's from a 19th-century opera! And: the host of a television show about gardening is tired of using the verb "to plant," and is desperate for an alternative. But coming up with one is harder than you might think! Plus, a word for that sinking feeling when your favorite restaurant closes. Also, a word quiz based on the party game Taboo, the history of cataract, a begrudging ode to office jargon, and an old children's song about popping the heads off of flowers. FULL DETAILS Come From Away, a new musical about the 7000 passengers whose planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, after the September 11th attacks, is not only a fine piece of theater. It's also a rich trove of Newfoundland language, including come from away, a noun that means "visitor." Evergreen State College in Washington is certainly in the running for best school mascot, with the Geoduck. But you can't forget the UC Santa Cruz Fighting Banana Slugs, or the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes. The term mascot itself was popularized by a 19th century French comic opera, called La mascotte. The word is also related to the Spanish term for "pet," mascota. The Dictionary of Newfoundland English offers a look at some intriguing vocabulary from that part of the world, such as the expression best kind, meaning "in the best state or condition." If you pronounce roof to rhyme with hoof, you're not alone. Millions of people all over the U.S. say it that way, though the pronunciation with the long o sound is more common. You're not a true resident of Poca, West Virginia, if you're not cheering on the local high school, the Poca Dots. Quiz Guy John Chaneski brought us a puzzle based on one of his favorite party games: Taboo. If he gave you a series of terms that all match up with a certain word—like car, clock, burglar, and siren—what word would you say goes with them? We got a call from Nan Sterman, host of the public television gardening show A Growing Passion, who writes so much about plants that she's looking for some alternatives to the verb to plant. But what to say if you don't want to sound pretentious or stilted? What about variations such as Stick that little guy in the soil, or Bury that gem in a pot? Fair weather to you, and snow to your heels, is one way for Newfoundlanders to wish each other good luck. The Fibber McGee drawer is that essential place where you quickly shove a bunch of junk when you need to clean up fast and don't have the time or care to organize anything. It comes from the old radio comedy, Fibber McGee and Molly, which featured a running gag in which Fibber had a closet crammed with junk that fell cacophonously to the floor whenever he opened it. The high school in Hoopeston, Illinois, calls its teams the Hoopeston Area Cornjerkers, and in Avon, Connecticut, the Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers are a beloved hockey team. In case you're shopping for school districts. A cataract is not only an eye condition, it's also a waterfall. And the two uses of the word are related, in the sense that in the ancient world, a cataracta was one of those iron gates that hung outside a city, such as Pompeii, to protect against invading hoardes. A chemist who spent years working in the pharmaceutical industry sent us an amusing sendup of corporatespeak that begins, "It is what it is, so let's all reach out and circle the wagons…" Although his jargon-laden riff wonderfully satirizes such cliched writing, it's worth noting that many find the phrase circle the wagons objectionable. Biting the bit, akin to champing at the bit, means someone's raring to go, or out of control. Expressions like, I don't not like that, or, You can't not like being out are, are versions of litotes, a rhetorical device used for expressing understatement. In Newfoundland, the word wonderful is often used as an intensifier for both positive and negative things. For example, a Newfoundlander might refer to something as a wonderful loss. There's an old children's ditty that goes, Mama had a baby and its head popped off, which you sing while popping the top off of a dandelion or similar flower. Is there a word for when your favorite restaurant closes? What about goneappetit? What's in a mascot name? Maybe you're a fan of the Banana Slugs, or you cheer for the Winged Beavers. Perhaps your loyalty lies with the Fighting Artichokes. There are some strange names for sports team out there. But what's even stranger is the origin of the word "mascot" itself. It's from a 19th-century opera! And: the host of a television show about gardening is tired of using the verb "to plant," and is desperate for an alternative. But coming up with one is harder than you might think! Plus, a word for that sinking feeling when your favorite restaurant closes. Also, a word quiz based on the party game Taboo, the history of cataract, a begrudging ode to office jargon, and an old children's song about popping the heads off of flowers.FULL DETAILSCome From Away, a new musical about the 7000 passengers whose planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, after the September 11th attacks, is not only a fine piece of theater.
