You don't need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.—Nhat Hanh

Is it time to redefine the meaning of what it means to be Christian? Traditional religious institutions may be apathetic, or even corrupt, as we've seen in the Catholic priest scandals. Yet, it is possible to feel inspired and start new, according to our guest today, internationally acclaimed theologian Matthew Fox. Matthew was a member of the Dominican Order for 34 years, but then expelled for being a feminist theologian, which went against the traditional teachings. He then started his own institutions for Creative Spirituality. Today Matthew talks about how more and more people have strayed away from traditional religion. Many parents have given up on religion, so how do you teach children about morals and spirit? Matthew discusses how we can emphasize the spirituality aspect more through contemplation and action. Younger people are interested in social reform. He talks about the importance of Christian mystics ranging from Hildegard von Bingen to Meister Eckhart to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. To recreate religion, we need to consider mysticism. Modern spiritual leaders such as Thích Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama are teaching about spirit. Matthew suggests considering various wisdom and studying different ranges of religions. He invites us to ask questions such as how we are related to these great beings like Jesus, Mother Mary, Buddha, or Mohammad. He discusses the intense need for connection that was formerly found though religious communities. Raves are a new way to celebrate rituals. The original purpose was to worship, so he developed the “Cosmic Mass” – a dance celebration ritual without drugs. He talks about how creativity is extremely important. We can look at the planets and stars and ask how we are connected. How can we live in awe? Matthew holds a doctorate in the History and Theology of Spirituality from the Institut Catholique de Paris. He founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality. Matthew continues to be an activist for gender justice and eco-justice. He is the author of 37 books and today he talks about his book “The Pope's War.” Info: MatthewFox.org

Hello to you listening in East Cannington, Australia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Time out of mind I volunteered with ESL Program teaching English as a second language. I learned that trying to comprehend English is like wrestling an octopus. It is frustratingly difficult to get your arms around the rules, exceptions to the rules, idioms, colloquialisms, and expressions that have become part and parcel of 200+ years of expressing ourselves in many tongues.  All any of us want is to be seen and heard. Imagine what it feels like to be unable to express yourself clearly in a language that is not your first language, your mother tongue. Imagine the sense of shame about not fitting in, not getting the jokes, not understanding or comprehending what is being said or asked of you. Maybe even feeling stupid. So, what do we do? How do we bridge that gap?  Practical Tip: We might try practicing Right Speech. Not right as in the opposite of wrong but listening deeply and carefully before speaking truthfully, speaking in a nourishing and compassionate way that relieves suffering and brings people back to themselves. Why? Our communication is our continuation. Not too many days ago I reacted to what I perceived was a written insult. My response was rude and unskillful. I had to make amends to my friend. Here's a good reminder that all is not lost: “Even those who have a good heart and don't want to hurt others sometimes allow toxic words to escape from their lips.”Question: What's helps you communicate skillfully? To understand and be understood?  More Resources on Right SpeechThích Nhat Hanh explains that “Right Speech” is a Buddhist term for loving speech, or speech that is nourishing, peaceful, compassionate, and ... Compassion, he proposes, is the key to both deep listening and “right speech,” and “the one goal of compassionate communication is to help others suffer less.”  Right Speech: from “The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching”Listen on YouTube: The Art of CommunicatingYou're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now. Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL.

The hosts and their guests engage in authentic and uncensored deep dives into the abyss of life.On this episode of Wherever It Takes Us, we talk about the life and impact of Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Affectionately called the “Father of Mindfulness”, Nhat Hanh (meaning, One Action) devoted his monastic life to helping people. Poet, author, peace activist, spiritual leader, Thich Nhat Hanh's devotion to awakening consciousness as a means to create peace and joy, as well as, processing grief and suffering, on an individual level and collective global  level is truly inspirational. The Film: Walk With Me“Directed by Marc J Francis & Max Pugh, ‘Walk With Me' is a cinematic and immersive exploration into the world-famous monastery of Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh.   As Benedict Cumberbatch's meditative voice reads extracts from Thich Nhat Hanh's early journals, the daily routine and rituals of monks and nuns on a quest to develop a deep sense of presence, slowly unfolds across the four seasons.  With unprecedented access, this visceral film is an insightful rumination on the pursuit of happiness, and what it means to devote one's life to mindfulness and living in the present moment – a welcome remedy to the stresses of a world in turmoil.”https://walkwithmefilm.com/ Plum Village:https://plumvillage.org/?gclid=CjwKCAjwyaWZBhBGEiwACslQo3yr2D9dkZbYvwFb45NqFFScGHaZxmVywA6EDZNXzoEBjSXpUzAKqBoCDxcQAvD_BwE - filter=.region-na -------------------------- Connect with Kim, David, and Nourished Community:Whereverittakesus.com David Codney-Website: Acidandsalt.comInstagram: @chefcodney Kim Moran-Website: kimmorancoaching.comEquineandhuman.comInstagram: @kimcalifornia Music: Among the Globe by Colorfilm Music

I picked up the book only because it seemed like a "mindfulness for dummies" type book. But what I found inside the pages was beyond belief, and quiet literally changed my life. Thich Nhat Hanh was one of those special beings – a genius at not only mastering the teachings of the ancients for himself but mastering the art conveying these teachings to beginners. The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a heartbroken letter to their mutual friend Raphael Gould. He said: “I did not sleep last night. . . . They killed Martin Luther King. They killed us. I am afraid the root of violence is so deep in the heart and mind and manner of this society. They killed him. They killed my hope. I do not know what to say. . . . He made so great an impression in me. This morning I have the impression that I cannot bear the loss.”    Only a few years earlier, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr. as part of his effort to raise awareness and bring peace in Vietnam. There was an unexpected outcome of Nhat Hanh's letter to King: The two men met in 1966 and 1967 and became not only allies in the peace movement, but friends. This friendship between two prophetic figures from different religions and cultures, from countries at war with one another, reached a great depth in a short period of time. Dr. King nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He wrote: “Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity.”   The two men bonded over a vision of the Beloved Community: a vision described recently by Congressman John Lewis as “a nation and world society at peace with itself.” It was a concept each knew of because of their membership within the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international peace organization, and that Martin Luther King Jr. had been popularizing through his work for some time. Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrus shows, took the lineage of the Beloved Community from King and carried it on after his death.    Each year the cathedral chooses a theme for inspiration and reflection, and in 2021 our theme is healing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/parayrespira/message

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/parayrespira/message

Why is it so hard for us to stop and rest? We've somehow all been conditioned, not just the over-achievers and type As – all of us – to think that rest is an ugly word. When social norms continue to reward us only for achieving and obtaining, it becomes hard to value doing nothing. When we normalize running full calendars and scheduled lives, it become hard to tell ourselves and others that we've got nothing planned. When we proudly proclaim that we're busy, overbooked or stretched for time, all we're doing is proving that we've succumbed to a life of restlessness. The word rest has become associated with laziness, guilt, unworthiness and weakness. However, The funny thing is: REST is the opposite of all that – REST is a SUPERPOWER. In fact, rest is so integral to living a life of happiness and fullness that Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has written an entire book on the topic called “How to Relax” – a book I will continue to source as we talk about rest in connection with modern life. According to Nhat Hanh, without learning how to rest and “just be” we can't tap into our internal sources of peace and love. He writes in his book: “The world needs joyous and loving people who are capable of just being.” In other words, learning to rest is learning to just be, which then helps people live with more joy and peace and of course the world needs so many more people who can do this”. Over the next several weeks, until August 30th, I will be dedicating every episode on this podcast to this what I call the Art of Rest. We've heard about the Art of War, the Art of Photography, and the Art of Seduction - so many "Arts of". But rest is an art form too. Something we can train ourselves to get better at, to hone, to mold, to improve upon and shape into something magnificent for our well-being. My hope is that while we are taking a deep dive into the topic of rest in these next episodes, you yourself will be better positioned to both intellectualize why rest is so needed while also being able to experience rest personally on a deeply soulful, even spiritual level in your own life.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottl

The practice of non-violence Buddha explains in the chapter of the Dhammapada called “Violence” refers to abandoning both the killing of living beings and the violence of our speech. Sometimes we harm other people most with our speech. Unlike a physical wound, hurtful words may cut a person throughout their whole life. Our words our very powerful. As people create their self (a mere perception), unkind words can shape their identity.  Non-violence means to not harm or retaliate. We can learn to not retaliate towards those who irritate or harm us by developing compassion for them. These are the steps of the practice: Step one. Know that forgiveness of another person is necessary for our own mental peace and sanity. When we forgive others it helps us most of all.  Step two. Try to separate the person from their uncontrolled minds like anger, jealousy, attachment and so forth. These uncontrolled minds are the real enemies of ourselves and others. They destroy our happiness and cause us to harm others.  Step three. We contemplate the ways that the person who harms us is suffering or is causing their own future suffering. We try to generate real compassion for them.  Step 4. We make a determination that through the week, whenever we start to think negatively about that person, we will instead move our mind to consider the ways that they suffer. We will try, through mindfulness, to replace our thoughts of anger with thoughts of compassion.   In June 1965, after another self-immolation by a Buddhist monk in Vietnam, spiritual teacher Thich Nhat Hanh felt compelled to write an open letter to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King had just received the Nobel Peace Prize the year before for his leadership in the struggle for racial equality. In that letter, Nhat Hanh attempted to explain the spiritual intent of the immolations. He also urged Dr. King to speak out for America’s withdrawal towards peace in Vietnam. Through this gesture, Dr. King and Thich Nhat Hanh began a conversation, which transformed them both. Their engagement and eventual deep mutual friendship. In the letter, he writes:   “I believe with all my heart that the monks who burned themselves did not aim at the death of the oppressors but only at a change in their policy. Their enemies are not man. They are intolerance, fanaticism, dictatorship, cupidity, hatred, and discrimination which lie within the heart of man. I also believe with all my being that the struggle for equality and freedom you lead in Birmingham, Alabama… is not aimed at the whites but only at intolerance, hatred, and discrimination. These are real enemies of man — not man himself.”   Through this gesture, Dr. King and Thich Nhat Hanh began a conversation, which transformed them both. Their engagement and eventual deep mutual friendship. All tremble at violence; All fear death.  Seeing others as being like yourself,  Do not kill or cause others to kill. (129)*    All tremble at violence;  Life is dear for all.  Seeing others as being like yourself,  Do not kill or cause others to kill. (130)*    If, desiring happiness,  You use violence  To harm living beings who desire happiness,  You won’t find happiness after death. (131)   If, desiring happiness,  You do not use violence To harm living beings who desire happiness,  You will find happiness after death. (132)    Don’t speak harshly to anyone;  What you say will be said back to you.  Hostile speech is painful,  And you will meet with retaliation. (133)   References   Buddha. Un ouvrage, How to Love (ed. Connections Between Gut, Earth & Brain Improve Treatment OptionsYou carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you. Mother Earth is not just your environment.~ Nhat Hanh Zach Bush MD, Charlottesville, VA., is one of the few triple board-certified physicians in the country - with expertise in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Hospice/Palliative care. The breakthrough science that Dr. Bush and his colleagues have delivered through Restore offers profound new insights into human health and longevity. In 2012 he discovered a family of carbon-based redox molecules made by bacteria. He and his team subsequently demonstrated that this cellular communication network functions to compensate for glyphosate, and many other dietary, chemical, and pharmaceutical toxins that disrupt our body's natural defense systems. This exciting discovery provided demonstrable results surprisingly quickly in my office with a very refractory adolescent Autism Spectrum Disordered client, so I called him up to ask him for this interview. This discovery also resulted in a revolutionary class of dietary supplements, including their product, http://corepsych.com/restore (Restore.) Dr. Bush points to his kids as the driving force behind his passion for change. His drive for comprehensive biomedical reform for our collective futures is evident in this evocative episode. His education efforts provide a grassroots foundation from which we can launch change in our legislative decisions, ultimately up-shifting consumer behavior to bring about a radical change in the mega industries of big farming, big pharma, and Western Medicine at large. Listen up to Dr. Bush's global vision for comprehensive, data-driven change. He's quick, smart, entertaining and right on. Personal Note This CBJ/175 Episode should be, even though I can't tell you what to do, mandatory listening. Fasten your seatbelts, Dr. Bush lives both on this earth and in the stratosphere.
